A crotchety and fierce old lady who

shouts and screams mean things at Scout

and Jem

A morphine addict, and she died after

freeing herself from her addiction.

Atticus considers her one of the bravest

people he knows and he wanted Jem tosee that about her. Jem has in turn

changed his attitude towards her.

Source Evidence Atticus explained to Jem that Mrs. Dubose

had been a morphine addict. Her fits were

withdrawals, and although she only had a

few months to live, she suffered through

the fits because she wanted to break her

addiction before she died, and she had.

This shows that Mrs Dubose is acourageous woman as she attempted to

overcome her morphine addiction even

though she might die a painful death.

been staying a little bit longer every day.

The alarm clock was set for a few minutes

later each day, and usually when it rang,

Mrs. Dubose was in the middle of one of

her fits, but she hadn't had a fit yet that day

and it had been almost two hours.

This shows that Mrs Dubose is patient

and determined to wear off her

morphine addiction.

From this quote, it can be seen that Mrs

Dubose is a racist and looks down on

negroes and blacks. She insulted Jem so

badly that he erupted like a volcano andbreaks off all of Mrs Dubose favourite

blossoms.

Atticus thinks that she is courageous

because she overcame her morphineaddiction and faces the fits with a

courageous attitude.

From this quote, it can be seen that Mrs Dubose is an

extremely strict lady. When she saw Scout

misbehaving, she tried to scold Scout. However, it

can also be noted that she is very rude to people

around her.

Through this short quote of eight words, it shows

that Mrs Dubose was finally worn off her morphine

addiction and is prepared for death. She did not send

the children off in a hostile manner, and it shows that

she has perhaps seen the children in a different light.

This quote shows that Mrs Dubose practises social

prejudice. She remarked that Scout was in overalls,

which was meant for boys. In those days, girls was

supposed to be delicate and wear dressed instead of

acting like scout, whom mixed with Jem and Dill.

Even though Mrs Dubose is losing control over her

body, she tries her best to regain control of her

actions and draw her saliva in as an attempt to

portray a calm and delicate lady image.

Mrs Dubose is old, and experienced alot over the

years. This can be seen by the signs on her hands and

nails, whereby they have aged and roughened.

IN A NUT SHELLDubose was once known as the dragon of the

neighborhood. However, she proves everyone

wrong. She proves that she was not a grumpy

old woman. Instead, she showed everyonethat she was a courageous woman when she

fought her morphine addiction. She kept to

her promise even if it meant death for her.

Atticus on seeing that, commended it as true

Courage.

To conclude, from one who was described as

plain nightmare, she fought her morphine

addiction so hard that people see her as a

courageous woman.
