As these Shabbat candles give light to all who behold them, so may we, by our lives, give light to all who behold us.

As their brightness reminds us of the generations of Israel who have kindled light, so may we, in our own day, be among those who kindle light.

– Miskhan T’filah

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves — Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some; it is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Let us sing out to God, the Maker of all, Sure and strong Let all of creation from mountain to sea Hear our song For all of the wonder and all of God’s light We rejoice So now let us listen with all of our hearts To hear God’s voice

A thought has blown the market place away. There is a song in the wind

And joy in the trees. The Sabbath arrives in the world,

Scattering a song in the silence of the night; Eternity utters a day. Where are the words

That could compete with such might?

♫ Or Zarua ♫ (Dan Nichols)

We must keep our hopes alive. We must raise our voices high. We must hold each other tight. We must stand up in the night.

And be a light…

We must spread our love around. We must feel this spiritual sound. We must work ‘til peace has come.

We must love and live as one. And be a light…

According to an ancient legend, the light created at the very beginning of creation was not the same as the light emitted by the sun, the moon and the stars. The light of the first day was a sort that would have enabled a person to see the world at a glance from one end to the other. Since people were unworthy to enjoy the blessing of such light, God concealed it; but in the world to come it will appear to the pious in all its pristine glory. Something of that light rests upon saints and people of righteous deeds on the seventh day, and that light is called “the additional soul” [n’shamah y’teirah].

How wonderful, O God, are the works of Your hands! The heavens declare Your glory, the arch of sky displays Your handiwork.

The heavens declare the glory of God. The roaring breakers of the sea tell of Your awesome might; the beasts of the field and the birds of the air bespeak Your wondrous will.

The earth reveals God’s eternal presence. In Your goodness You have made us able to hear the music of the world. The raging of the winds, the whisperings of trees in the wood, and the precious voices of loved ones reveal to us that You are in our midst.

A divine voice sings through all creation.

When God revealed the Torah, no bird chirped,

no fowl beat its wings, no ox bellowed,

the angels did not sing, the sea did not stir,

no creature uttered a sound. The world was silent and still

and the Divine Voice spoke: “I am Adonai your God.”

– Midrash Exodus Rabbah

My thoughts roam. A mountain. I must seek out a mountain And stand on its peak, The clouds swirling below me, Spread out over the magnificence of Your creation. But I have still not reached You.

You are close. I can feel you in the blue of the sky, In the path of the river below me, That threads its way marked by stands of eucalypt. But I have not succeeded. Your presence eludes me.

I leap Expecting to fall through the clouds, To tumble out of control.

But I do not fall. There I find You. In the gentle wind, The soft touch of Your voice whispers to me. It is so small, so gentle That I can scarcely hear it. But I do not just hear it, I feel it. What a challenge, to feel Your voice.

Now I float gently down, The wind carrying me in a cradle of song. Adonai, p’tach libi, open my heart, And let me hear Your voice, as it whispers to my soul.

Peace is not the absence of conflict. Peace is dealing with conflict While honoring justice. Peace is not the absence of anger. Peace is expressing anger While honoring compassion. Peace is not the absence of desire. Peace is allowing for desire without The fantasy that fulfillment brings happiness. Peace is not the absence of fear. Peace is knowing how to move through fear. Peace is not the absence of self. Peace is knowing that the self is absent. May I cultivate the skills to live in peace:

To live with honor, To live with justice. To live with compassion, To live with desire, To live with fear, To live with self, To live with emptiness.

An hour before the first Shabbat, Adam and Eve were to be expelled from the Garden of Eden for eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. But Shabbat, about to enter the world for the first time, interceded.

Will You welcome me by bringing death into the world?” she cried to God. And so the Holy One of Blessing relented and allowed Adam and Eve to enjoy the world’s first Shabbat in the Garden of Eden. To thank Shabbat for her understanding and compassion, Adam and Eve wanted to sing her a song, but Shabbat demurred.

“No,” she said, “let us instead sing a song of thanks to God.” And so Shabbat composed this song, “It is good to praise Adonai.”

Six days shall you be a workaholic; On the seventh day, shall you join the serene company of human beings.

Six days shall you take orders from your boss; On the seventh day, shall you be master of your own life.

Six days shall you toil in the market; On the seventh day, shall you detach from money matters.

Six days shall you create, drive, invent, push; On the seventh day, shall you reflect.

Six days shall you be the perfect success; On the seventh day, shall you remember that not everything is in your power.

Six days shall you be a miserable failure; On the seventh day, shall you be on top of the world.

Six days shall you enjoy the blessings of work; On the seventh day, shall you understand that being is as important as doing.

– Blu Greenberg

God acts within every moment and creates the world with each breath.

God speaks from the center of the universe in the silence beyond all thought.

Mightier than the crash of a thunderstorm mightier than the roar of the sea,

is God’s voice silently speaking in the depths of the listening heart.

– Stephen Mitchell

It is not you alone who pray, or we, or those others; all things pray, and all things pour forth their souls. The heavens pray, the earth prays, every creature and every living thing. In all life, there is longing. Creation is itself but a longing, a kind of prayer to the Almighty. What are the clouds, the rising and the setting of the sun, the soft radiance of the moon and the gentleness of the night? What are the flashes of the human mind and the storms of the human heart? They are all prayers-- the outpouring of boundless longing for God.

I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is holy in my life. God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no service. But I need them.

Through prayer, I can sense my inner strength, my inner purpose, my inner joy, my capacity to love.

As I reach upward in prayer, I sense these qualities in my Creator. To love God is to love each other, to work to make our lives better. To love God is to love the world God created and to work to perfect it. To love God is to love dreams of peace and joy that illumine all of us and to bring that vision to life.

Praise Adonai to whom praise is due.

ד. ע ם ו ך לעול רוך יי המבר ב Baruch Adonai ham’vorach l’olam vaed. Praised be Adonai to whom praise is due, now and forever.

We pray to God as individuals, yet at times something even more powerful can happen when we pray in a congregation. We all know that that can be difficult—the leader goes to fast/too slowly; this group uses too much/too little Hebrew; the melodies are unfamiliar/too familiar; no one here seems serious/everyone is too serious.

While there will be time for private prayer tonight, the Bar’chu is a reminder that we have all come here—though for many different reasons—to seek some value in a praying community, with the understand that each of us is giving up something in the hope of receiving something—a sense of participating in the Jewish people; a sense of standing amid the people whose traditions give us words and gestures to ease the way to knowing God; sometimes just a larger chorus, a more varied set of inflections that can cast new light on the words we individually offer, that can amplify our individual voices into a mighty swell.

My heart is such a busy place Ever a bustle with the comings And goings of emotions. How can I love God with all my heart?

My soul darts about in a frantic pursuit Of every dream that promises to fill it up. How can I love God with all my soul?

Many days I need all my strength Just to manage the portion You put before me. How can I love God with all my strength? And how do I teach these words to my children When I still stumble over the syllables?

And how, God, do I talk of You along the way Without boasting a feigned intimacy With You whom I hardly know?

God, when I reach out my hand I almost Touch You. Help me to get out of my own way.

Adonai, let my soul soar above my room let her dance on walls to songs of violins leap rooftops to pages of poetry praise and orange, a horse, a mountain,

a breeze let her transcend all limits of my small life.

And you will teach them diligently unto your children. And you will speak of them when you’re sitting in your house, When you’re walking by the way and when you’re lying down,

And when you’re rising up, and when you’re rising up.

And you will bind them for a sign upon your hand, And they will be for frontlets between your eyes.

And you will write them on the doorposts of your house And upon your gates, and upon your gates.

That you may remember and do all of my commandments And be holy unto your God, unto your God, unto your God.

Amidst members of a generation from long ago Together with generations yet to be born

I stood at the shore of the sea and beheld Your might.

I could not be Moses, stretching forth his hand. I could not be Nachshon,

to praise Your name and sing of Your greatness.

These words are true: You make our lives difficult. You chase us with Your commands. You force us to choose between life and death, between slavery and freedom. We must learn to listen, or succumb to anguish and despair, to the death of the spirit. But You do not abandon us. you give us the courage to enter our struggles, to wrestle with the Pharaohs in our hearts, and the Pharaohs in the world, and to slowly free ourselves from bondage.

The meaning of Shabbat is to celebrate time rather than space. Six days a week we live under the tyranny of things of space; On Shabbat we try to become attuned to holiness in time. It is a day on which we are called upon to share in what is eternal in time, To turn from the results of creation to the mystery of creation, From the world of creation to the creation of the world.

Adonai, s’fatai tiftach u’fi yagid t’hilatecha.

Adonai, open my lips that my mouth may declare Your glory.

They say we're supposed to be in a palace. So we bow and take certain steps as the prescribed supplication drops from our lips. But what do we really know of castles and kings? My kitchen faucet constantly leaks and the kids' faces usually need cleaning. If a door opened to a real palace, I'd probably forget and carry in a load of groceries. No, the door we stand in front of when the Amidah begins is silence.

And when we open it and step through, we arrive in our hearts. Mine's not a fancy place, no jewels, no throne, certainly not fit for a king. But in that small chamber, for just a few moments on Sabbath, God and I can roll up our sleeves, put some schnapps out on the table, sit down together, and finally talk. That's palace enough for me.

We reach for You, our God from our quiet place. May we stand still, for a brief moment, and listen to the rain— Stand still, for a brief moment, and watch the play of sunlight and shadow on the leaves. For a brief moment—listen to the world.

Let us stop the wheels of every day to be aware of Shabbat. Find the stillness of the sanctuary which the soul cherished. Renew the Covenant of an ancient people.

We need a quiet space to test the balance of our days, the weight of our own deed against the heaviness of the world’s demands. The balance is precarious—steady us with faith:

Quiet places and stillness— where we will hear our own best impulses speak. Quiet places and stillness— from which we will reach out to each other.

We will find strength in silence and with this strength we will turn again to Your service.

And then all that has divided us will merge. And then compassion will be wedded to power And then softness will come to a world that is harsh and unkind. And then both men and women will be gentle. And then both women and men will be strong. And then no person will be subject to another’s will. And then all will be rich and free and varied. And then the greed of some will give way to the needs of many. And then all will share equally in the earth’s abundance. And then all will care for the sick and the weak and the old. And then all will nourish the young. And then all will cherish life’s creatures. And then all will live in harmony with each other and the earth. And then everywhere will be called Eden once again.

When I die give what’s left of me away To children and old men that wait to die.

And if you need to cry, Cry for your brother walking the street beside you.

And when you need me, put your arms around anyone And give them what you need to give to me.

I want to leave you something, Something better than words or sounds.

Look for me in the people I’ve known or loved, And if you cannot give me away,

At least let me live on your eyes and not on your mind.

You can love me most By letting hands touch hands,

By letting bodies touch bodies, And by letting go of children that need to be free.

Love doesn’t die, people do. So, when all that’s left of me is love,

Give me away.

-Merritt Malloy

There are stars up above, So far away you only see their light

Long, long after the star itself has gone. And so it is with the people that we loved— Their memories keep shining ever brightly

Though their time with us is done. But the stars that light up the darkest night,

These are the lights that guide us. As we live our days, these are the ways we remember.

-Hannah Senesh

Our thoughts turn to those who have departed this earth: our own loved ones, those whom our friends and neighbors have lost, the martyrs of our people whose graves are unmarked, and those of every race and nation whose lives have been a blessing to humanity. As we remember them, we meditate on the meaning of love and loss, of life and death.
