What is Partial Discharge?Inside all insulation systems exist imperfections known as “voids”.
There can be a number of causes, but in the end these voids actas the catalyst for the creation of partial discharge (PD).
PD is the localized movement of charge that damages surrounding
insulation. Over time this cumulative damage can lead to a failure.

The Doble Approach to Partial Discharge for
Rotating Machines
Phase 1: TESTING
When partial discharge occurs in rotating machines the bars or
coils become loose, resin binders deteriorate, stress relief systems
fail or end windings become cracked or contaminated.
The onset and progress of deterioration can be evaluated via trend
analysis. Periodic on-line testing is performed with Doble’s or other
pre-installed sensors.
Testing solutions are a low-cost introduction to PD testing and can
be used to test multiple machines.
Phase 2: MONITORING
Monitoring is used to assess the condition of insulation over
time to watch the progress of deterioration and plan preventative
action.
Maintenance can be scheduled more accurately to avoid costly
interruptions caused by in-service failures.
Monitoring can be done with Doble’s sensors or other pre-existing
sensors. This offers the highest level of defense for your mostcritical assets.

Monitoring Rotating Machines for Partial Dischargewith the PD-Guard
Doble offers the FailSafe and LF Coupler: the PDDC-17 and PDDC-24
for 17.5kV and 24kV applications.
Both couplers provide the deep sensing ability of a low frequency
capacitor and are designed for three phase and neutral rotating
machines.
The Doble FailSafe LF Coupler (PDDC-24), has the additional feature
of a fused element. Given the higher voltage applications possible
with this coupler, this added feature allows PD monitoring equipment
to be attached to buswork with greater safety and reliability.

Partial Discharge AssessmentDoble can visit your site to download data from pre-installed monitors or
make spot measurements using our instrumentation. A data assessment
can be provided on an annual basis.
