High Multiplicity Scheduling of One Product

High Multiplicity Scheduling of One Product

Vincent J.C.Kreuzen

Although there has been exten-sive research in the area of schedulingproblems, the high multiplicity set-ting of the problem is still largelyunexplored. In the high multiplicitysetting, the input of the problem iscompactly encoded, i.e. instead of alist of n identical products of type ito be scheduled as an input, we aregiven only four inputs: the numberof products to be produced, the pro-duction rate per day, pi, the demandper day, di, and the holding costs perunit per day, hi. Many problems thatare easy in the normal scheduling set-ting become hard when lifted to theirhigh multiplicity counterparts.

In this note, we have a single ma-chine which can produce one type ofproduct. Each day, only one type ofproduct can be produced. Overnight,the machine can be adjusted to pro-duce another type of product the fol-lowing day. Furthermore, productionis done in batches, i.e. we either pro-duce p items during a day, or none atall. The goal is to minimize the to-tal average costs subject to the con-dition that all demands are satisfiedand no backlogs are allowed. I show

that by considering the high multi-plicity setting, even trivial cases ofthe corresponding “normal” counter-parts become non-trivial in terms ofsize and complexity. This note is ageneralization of results in (Gabay etal. 2014).

Scheduling a single product

It is easy to see that di/pi is the frac-tion of time a product i needs to bescheduled on the machine, and thus,in the general version of the problem,there exists a feasible schedule if andonly if ∑

i∈J

dipi

≤ 1 .

Henceforth, we assume that theproblem is feasible. Given that weonly have a single product to be pro-duced, i = 1.

In most scheduling problems,scheduling a single product on a sin-gle machine is trivial. However, con-sidering a high multiplicity encodingtakes away some of the triviality ofthis seemingly simple problem.

Observe that if we could produceany quantity per day, we would sim-

ply produce at demand rate and meetdemand exactly. However, since weare required to produce in batches,unless p = d, we will have to keepsome produce in stock.

In order to minimize the averageholding costs, intuitively, we wouldlike to produce only when we needto. It turns out that this is indeedthe optimal scheduling strategy. Letqt denote the stock level at the end ofday t, and let πt be a binary denot-ing whether the product is producedduring day t. We will prove the fol-lowing theorem.

Theorem 1. In an optimal schedule,πt = 1 if and only if qt−1 < d1.

We first characterize the mini-mum cycle length, after which we cal-culate the costs of an optimal sched-ule. The proof shows that for an op-timal schedule, the inventory levels

for the time units in the schedule arethe multiples of gcd(p1, d1) ≤ p1.

Lemma 1. The minimum cyclelength for is

l∗ =p1

gcd(p1, d1).

Proof. Denote G = gcd(p1, d1). As-sume without loss of generality thatq0 < p1. Since the cycle must be fea-sible, we have that d1 ≤ p1.

Producing p1 provides stock forp1/d1 time units, with a leftoverstock of p1 mod d1. Let the stock attime t be qt = qt−1 + πt − d1. Theschedule is cyclic when qt = q01 fort > 0. For a minimum cycle length,we want to minimize over t such thatqt = q0+

∑tu=1 π

u−d1t = q0. Rewrit-ing gives

t =t∑

u=1

πu p1d1

.

2

Page 22: PerVectum 2015/2016 - issue 3

PerVectum

22

Clearly, t is minimized when∑tu=1 π

u = d1/G, and thus t =p1/G = l∗ .

Using this lemma we can com-pute the costs of an optimal sched-ule.

Lemma 2. The shortest optimalcyclic schedule has average costs

c̄ =h12

(p1 − gcd(p1, d1)) .

Proof. Denote G = gcd(p1, d1). As-sume without loss of generality thatthe initial stock q01 = 0. Given anoptimal cyclic schedule with lengthl∗, qt1 must have unique values fort = 0, . . . , l∗ − 1. Suppose l∗ > p1/G.Then each qt is a multiple of G. Sincel∗ > p1/G and each qt has a uniquevalue, there exists at least one t suchthat qt ≥ p1, and thus this schedulecannot be optimal. Thus the lengthof the shortest optimal schedule isl∗ = p1/G.

Since the total demand duringthe cycle is d1l

∗, and each time unitof production produces p1, we knowthat we produce during a total ofd1l

∗/p1 = d1/G time units. Since qt

has a unique value for each t < l∗,and q0 = 0, the stock values are allmultiples of G. Hence, the values ofqt are the multiples of G smaller thanp1. Since p1 = l∗G, the total stock forthe cycle equals

∑l∗−1j=0 jG.

Thus the total costs of S∗ are:

h1

l∗−1∑j=0

jG = h11

2Gl∗(l∗ − 1)

=h1p12

(p1G

− 1

).

Thus, an optimal schedule haslength l∗ and total costs l∗c̄. In-terestingly, the length of the cycleis linear in p1/gcd(p1, d1), which isnot a part of the input. The op-timal schedule has pseudopolynomiallength, which can be exponential inthe size of the input of the problem,as can be seen in Figure 1. Thus,simply outputting a feasible scheduleis already a hard task, even when weonly need to schedule a single type ofproduct.
