ABSTRACT

The ever-increasing energy consumption and climate change are important issues globally.

The building sector is responsible for approximately 40% of the total energy consumption both

in national and European level. Energy conservation is the key for reducing the emissions of

greenhouse gases (especially CO2) and further improving the quality of life.

Based on the EU Directive 2002/91/EC concerning the improvement of energy efficiency in

buildings, Greek parliament passed law N. 3661/2008 (FEK A 89) concerning energy efficiency

in buildings. Then the law known as KENAK (Regulations for Energy Efficiency in Buildings)

was approved, who introduces the concept of integrated energy planning in the study of

buildings in order to improve their energy efficiency, energy saving and environmental impact.

In this thesis, after a detailed presentation of Regulation for Energy Efficiency in Buildings

(KENAK), an attempt is made to apply the methodology for calculating the energy efficiency of

buildings in a public building and more specifically . The goal is to

evaluate the features of energy consumption and then to study and present proposals for

possible interventions in order to improve the energy planning and reduce energy consumption.

The study was carried out with the help of software -KENAK, a proficient software tool for

studying the energy consumption in buildings, which is also presented in detail in the thesis.
