DIPLOMA THESIS PROJECTS’ EXHIBITION 2010-2011 School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Faculty of Architecture, Istanbul Technical University

This diploma thesis projects’ exhibition is the first to bejointly organised by the School of Architecture of theAristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Faculty ofArchitecture of the Istanbul Technical University.

The fruit of an ongoing collaboration between these twomajor schools that have trained successive generations ofyoung architects in both counties, the exhibition presents atotal of 100 projects, 50 from each school, submitted duringthe academic year 2010-2011. The intention is to portray and highlight in a comparativeway the multifaceted aspects related to the teaching andresearch of architectural design in the broad sense of theterm, which encompass all established fields andapproaches included in the study of architecture. The 100 projects exhibited here have been selected among theentire number of diploma projects submitted in both schools in

the recent academic year, by a joint committee of Greek andTurk colleagues from both Schools.

The selection process was based on a composite series ofcriteria such as the representation of all thematic fieldsincluded in the curricula of each school, ranging fromindustrial object, architectural design, urban design andplanning, landscape architecture, restoration of historicbuildings and sites, etc.; the quality of the project in terms ofits completion level and its adequate graphic design; theoriginality of the approach; the relevance as to currentissues of sustainability and ecological concern; and itsawareness on present-day social problems in the city.

The exhibition is expected to contribute to a valuableunderstanding of the teaching and research as curried out inboth Schools, and provide a solid ground for drawing fertile andrelevant conclusions concerning the architectural education inparticular and the architectural practice in general.
