WORK EXPERIENCE

Matalan Aberdeen – Customer Service Assistant 2014-2015

Part-time Customer Service Assistant/Head Cashier and General Sales Assistant (16-24 hours per week). Dealt with any problems or complaints customers had including returns and exchanges, answered the telephone, made tannoy announcements and was responsible for ensuring each till operator had enough money in their respective tillpoints. This position allowed me to increase my communication skills, my leadership skills and also my teamwork skills, while indicating my ability to deal with large amounts of responsibility.

St Andrew’s Links Trust – Food and Beverage Assistant 2011 - 2013

Full time employment (32-40 hours a week) for St Andrews Links Trust as a waiter and barman in a busy golf clubhouse during the peak summer season. This involved meeting and greeting customers before taking food and drinks orders and ensuring that their time spent in the clubhouse was of the highest standard. I gained invaluable experience in dealing with the public and resolving customers’ problems and also greatly improved my communication skills. As part of my employment I also operated the Refreshment Van on the Old Course unsupervised for long hours twice a week. This led to great problem solving experience and demonstrated my ability to work under pressure whilst alone.

SKILLS AND RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Field Experience- 1 day fieldtrip to Portsoy (2011) as an introduction to field sketching and general fieldwork. - 1 day fieldtrip to Stonehaven (2012). Completed multiple sedimentary logs, general fieldwork, igneous intrusion mapping etc.

- 7 day fieldtrip to Isle of Skye (2013). Completed a week of detailed mapping in an area of granite and calcareous limestone. Created cross sections of the area to help understand the underlying geology. Sketched various areas of interest including Kilt Rock (columnar jointing) and an area of igneous flows over a black shale. Calculated crustal extension over an area of small and large dykes. Discussed the formation of petroleum in reservoirs and source rocks.

- 11 day fieldtrip to Inchnadamph/Durness/Scourie (28th April to 9th May 2014) investigating structural geology, specifically with the Moine succession. Large scale and small scale imbrication as well as standard thrust faulting described and various cross sections of the area were created to allow a more accurate understanding of the geological processes that occurred.

- 35 day field expedition (June-July 2014) in the Camas Malag area of the Isle of Skye. This expedition was undertaken independently as part of my Honours year Mapping Project. An area of approximately 15 square kilometres was mapped geologically, with large numbers of sketches, cross sections and measurements made. There were roughly 11 different lithologies with a variety of faults

and intrusions occurring throughout the area. Specific interest was placed on the growth and size of mineral phenocrysts in a large Granitic intrusion in comparison to the distance they occurred from the margin with a Dolostone. Completed notebooks and field maps were handed in to my University in early September and were followed by a 5000 word report on my expedition and a digital map of my area created with Inkscape software.

- 4 day fieldtrip to Thurso and surrounding areas (October 2014). Investigated in detail the aspects of the Devonian Orcadian Basin including source rocks, reservoir rocks, structure, burial history and hydrocarbon migration. Used biomarker data from various samples (including the Lybster and Beatrice-A oil fields) in order to produce a report regarding the thermal maturity of the rocks in this sequence. A large group project was also completed in relation to this fieldtrip, along with a Space-Time diagram along the Great Glen Fault.

CommunicationMy past employment as a waiter/barman has allowed me to gain much experience in communicating with both the public and my colleagues. This is a great transferable skill and is a key skill for working as part of any team. Also by working as a Customer Service Assistant I have had a further chance for interaction with a large variety of people and good communication is by far the most important skill to have in this position.

Problem SolvingAn important attribute which is essential for completing tasks to the highest standard is problem solving. The high level of work throughout the BSc Petroleum Geology course has allowed me to build my problem solving skills considerably. Through challenging hypothetical situations I have been taught to think both inside and outside of the box when approaching a problem and this is an ability that would be very useful in the Hydrocarbon industry.

TeamworkAs part of my University degree I am constantly working as part of a team on various mapping projects, presentations and practical laboratory workshops. Within these teams I have undertaken various roles including group leader and coordinator. These situations will help prepare me for life after University where being a valuable member of a team is key to completing tasks. My previous experience in the Food and Beverage, and Retail industries has also allowed me to work as part of a team and again given me valuable experience.

ITHaving compiled various spreadsheets and reports on the computer as part of my degree my IT skills have developed greatly. Also using software such as ArcGIS and Inkscape has allowed me to further develop these skills and helped me become a competent computer user, which is key when working with data and information regarding petroleum and hydrocarbons. I am also familiar with key geological software such as Petrel and Move, having used these in my final year of studies.

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

My main interests outside of University include sports (golf and football), going to the gym and reading. Throughout my time at University I have also held various part-time jobs in order to fund my expenses (fieldtrips etc.) As a golfer I have represented at both junior and senior levels for Angus County and I was selected for the Scottish Golf Academy for 3 years and my current handicap is 4.6. I also enjoy socialising and listening to music.
