The  7-‐Year  Success  CycleJune,  2011—  June,  2015

Page 2: SAVN Success Cycle

The  SAVN  7-‐Year  Success  Cycle  The   SAVN  dream  was   launched  midway   2011.   I   had   read   somewhere   that  overnight   successes   typically   take   about   seven   years.   This   was   later  conBirmed   in  a  Forbes  article,   “Why  Overnight  Start-‐up  Success   Is  A  Myth,”  written  by  George  Bradt.  Following  are  quotes  from  the  article,  accompanied  by  my  annotations:

Forbes:  The  best-‐kept  secret  in  the  start-‐up  world  is  that  there  is  no  such  thing  as  an  overnight  success.  Success  typically  takes  six  to  seven  years  –  if  you  survive  the  ?irst  three.  Noland:  And  therein  lies  the  challenge!

Forbes:   Year   I   is   about   the   dream…   the   keys   are   curiosity   and   risk-‐taking.    Noland:  It  was  here,  during  one  of  those  curious,  creative  moments,  that   the   Spirit   inspired   name   came   into   being:   SAVN.tv,   an   acronym   for  Salvation   Army   Vision   Network,   and   also   a   condensation   of   the   word,  “SALVATION,”—our   RAISON   D'ÊTRE.   And   the   risk-‐taking   part   created   a  whole  lot  of  institutional  discomfort  (see  Forbes  parentheses  below).

[As  an  aside,  Kurnit   laid  out  the  difference  between  starting  a  business  inside  a  corporation  and  outside  one.  The  advantage  of  starting  inside  is  you  don’t  have  to  worry  about  payroll.  But,  almost  by  de?inition,  you’re  going  to  have  people  that  are  less  open  to  risk-‐taking  and  extra  friction  with  the  corporate  people  around  you.  If  you  start  inside,  isolate  yourself  as  well  as  possible   so   you  don’t  get   caught  up   in   the   corporate   culture  and   endless   meetings.]   Noland:   Freedom   from   bureaucratic   constraints  critical  to  midpoint  successes  and  achievements..

Page 3: SAVN Success Cycle

Forbes:  Year  II  is  scary.  By  then  you  have  “built  it.”  Now  you’ve  got  to  get  the   customers.  Noland:   It  was   trial   and   error   to  begin  with   (scary   stuff),  the   product   evolving,   changing   dramatically   in   look   and   function.   Social  media  is  beginning  to  take  on  a  life  of  its  own  during  this  period,  becoming  the  cyberspace  street-‐corner  gateway   to  our  customers.  Change   is  a  scary  thing!

At   this   juncture,   we   were   inspired   to   create   a   “Social   Media   Chaplain”  position.   After   some   experimentation,   we   began   to   think   that   ordained  ofBicers  would  be  a  perfect  Bit  for  this  component.  Now  it  really  starts  to  get  scary!

Forbes:  Year  III  is  the  break  point.  Either  your  business  is  working  or  it  isn’t.  If  it  is,  keep  going.  Keep  evolving.  Remember,  you’re  still  a  start-‐up,  still  working   towards   that   “overnight   success”   several   years  down   the  road.  Noland:   With   a   lot   of   intervention,   innovation   and   hard   work,   we  were  able  to  begin  widening  our  social  media  circles.

Now   into  Year   IV   (having   survived   the   Birst   III),   SAVN  has  made  excellent  progress  with  high  professional  quality  content  being  produced,  innovative  delivery   systems   developed   and   the   customer   base   beginning   to   expand  exponentially.

Following   is  a   selected  sampling  of  accomplishments  midway   through   the  SAVN  7-‐Year  Success  Cycle:

Review:  What  a  fantastic  production  by  SAVN.tv!  The  picture  and  sound  quality  are  superb.   The   music   tugs   at   the   heartstrings.   The   Dilm   was   very   emotional   and  moving…  there  should  be  a  warning  label  to  have  tissues  nearby.

THE MOVIE"Powerful,  gripping,  riveting  and  challenging.    Exposes  a  global  problem  in  ways  you  wish  you  never  had  to  be  confronted  with  it.    This  is  a  must  see  for  everyone"-‐-‐Josh  McDowell,  Christian  Apologist,  Evangelist  and  Author

The   bottom   line   is   that   Hard   Corps   is   a   new   standard.     It   will   set   the   pace   for   other  Christian  Dilmmakers  worldwide  will  aspire  to.    As  a  Christian  media  producer  myself,  this  Dilm  has  challenged  me   to   think  about  what  other  dark  areas  of  our  culture  need   to  be  exposed   through  a   Dilm   like   this.     I’m  not   content  anymore   to  accept  what  mainstream  media,  major  cable  networks,  or  feature  Dilms  say  about  issues  like  this.    I  think  it’s  time  Christians  began  inDluencing  the  story  in  our  culture.  And  Hard  Corps  is  a  powerful  start  —  Phil  Cooke,  Cooke  Pictures

“This  is  the  best  ?ilm  I've  ever  watched  on  this  subject.    It's  graphic  and  explicit  and  the  most  powerful  tool  I've  seen  to  help  men  see  that  the  problem  is  so  much  more  than  just  looking   at   dirty   pictures.     What   an   amazing   job   of   showing   the   connection   with  pornography,  prostitution,  and  sex  trafDicking.    Women  are  victimized  every  day  in  every  town  and  I  hope  and  pray  this  Dilm  will  make  a  difference.    If  you've  ever  wondered  if  you  are   doing   something  wrong   in   looking   at   pornography   you   need   to   watch   this   Dilm.—Steve  Arterburn,  New  Life  Ministries/Women  of  Faith

Hard  Corps  starts  as  a  fun,  quirky  journey  and  ends  at  the  bottom  of  a  deep  dark  secret  well  of  pain  and  slavery.  What  is  painted  in  our  culture  as  fun  and  harmless  through  the  sex   industry   turns   out   to  be   the   very   tool   of   enslavement   itself.   Thanks  Guy  Noland   for  taking  us  on  the  journey  and  showing  us  the  truth!  Now,  to  spread  the  news!  -‐-‐Danielle  Strickland  (Major)  Edmonton  Crossroads,

"HARD  CORPS   is  a  documentary   that  valiantly   tries   to  expose   the  seamy  side  of   the  sex   industry   and   present   efforts   to   rescue   women,   children   and   men   trapped   in  pornography,   prostitution   and   sex   trafDicking.   HARD   CORPS   builds   a   good   case   for   the  seamy,   tawdry,   sad,  evil  nature  of   the  sex   industry,  which  depends  on  abuse,   trafDicking,  brutality,  and  drugs.”-‐-‐Ted  Baehr,  Movieguide

Now  more  than  ever,  we  are  called  to  stand  for  what  is  right  and  abolish  what  is  wrong.  I  Dirmly   believe  we   need   to   understand   the   paths   of   traf?icking   and   I   Dirmly   believe  pornography   is   an   entry   point.   "Hard   Corps"   explores   the  world   of   porn   and   discovers  how  pervasive  this  problem  is-‐-‐Christine  Caine,  Founder  of  the  A21  Campaign

Page 8: SAVN Success Cycle

Hard  Corps  is  a  diversely  informative  documentary  that  sheds  much  needed  light  on  the  connections  between  pornography  and  the  sex  industry.  This  Dilm  not  only  gives  relevant  information  into  the  harsh  reality  of  the  sex  industry,  but  it  also  provides  a  call  to  action  that  everyone  can  connect  with  on  some  level.  Hard  Corps  will  change  the  way  you  view  sex   trafDicking   and   how   it   is   clearly   not   a   victimless   crime—Annie   Lobert,   Founder   of  “Hookers  for  Jesus”,  author  of  “Fallen”
