Weaning viewers awayfrom ancient CRTs

Sanyo vice presidentSatoru Hotta, one ofSanyo’s goals thisyear is to aggressivelypromote LCD TVamong current CRTowners who arethinking of upgradingtheir viewing experi-ence.

“If the product isright and the price isright, we can capturethe market,” Hottasaid.

Sanyo estimatesthat there is muchroom for growth inthe Asia-Pacific elec-

tronics market, withsales of flat paneltelevisions projectedto grow by as muchas 41 percent by2012.

Yoshinori Naka-tani, chief regional of-ficer of Sanyo Elec-tric, estimates thatwith its range of LCDTVs hitting the Asia-Pacific market, Sanyoexpects LCD televi-sions—including its24-inch Vizon LCD—to account for half ofits television sales inroughly two years.

Movie theater 3D image qualityIT ’S the 3D moviesthat are bringing in thebucks nowadays. Intelevision, that mightas well be the case.

And as 3D makesits transitions to tele-vision, Panasonic leadsthe pack in introduc-ing a Full HD 3D plas-ma TV in the local andinternational market. One of the world’s tophome products manu-factures, Panasonicchose the Frame Se-quential technology.

By choosing FrameSequential technology,Panasonic faces thetechnological chal-lenges of developing aTV and advanced 3DEyewear to make 3DTV viewing possible.

Reflecting its un-compromising stancetowards image quality, the company set up aspecial encoding (im-age compression) andauthoring laboratory inHollywood. Here, along time was spent co-operating with moviestudios to gain a deep-er understanding of themedium of movies andhow filmmakers think.

Encountering theframe-by-frame cre-ativity of filmmakers ina place as exciting as amovie theater, Pana-sonic strongly believedthat if this kind of ex-perience couldn’t bereproduced unspoiledthere would never be a3D system ideal for thehome. Thus, this atti-tude gave birth to arange of PanasonicFULL HD 3D products.

The idea behind

FULL HD 3D is to takeoriginal 3D images(fi lmed for the leftand right eyes), per-form full HD qualityencoding and author-ing, and record thedata on a Blu-ray Disc, the new standard inhome entertainmentvideo format. The disccan then be played ona compatible Blu-rayD i s c P l a y e r a n dviewed on a compati-ble HDTV.

SINGAPORE—Cathode Ray Tube(CRT) televisions have been aroundfor decades and, despite the march oftechnology over the years, they stillaccount for almost nine of 10 televi-sions throughout Asia Pacific.

And the main rea-son why the slimmerand more energy effi-cient televisions withhigh definition liquidcrystal displays (LCD)have not been able tomake a significantdent in the develop-ing region’s growingtelevision market isthe steep price.

Most LCD televi-sions are about twicemore expensive thanthe CRT televisions ofthe same size, puttingthem out of reach ofmost households.

Japan’s SanyoElectric Co. Ltd. ofthe Panasonic group, however, believes thatit has found the bestway to wean con-

sumers away fromCRTs and onto LCDswith its basic, entry-level 24-inch VizonLCD TV.

Sanyo’s Vizon hasthe basic features thatLCDs have, such asdynamic contrast forblacker blacks andbetter color contrasts, docks for easy con-nection to a personalcomputer and equaliz-er and bass expanderfor a gratifying gam-ing experience.

But the biggestdraw is its suggestedretail price ofP15,995, which putsit at the same level asa CRT TV of aboutthe same size.

Vic Sotto, Pia Guaniocall it quits?

In my recent interview withBossing, he said his relation-ship with Pia was not “triplang,” and that they both giveeach other room to grow.

Someone privy to theex(?)-couple’s romance insiststhat Pia has “tamed” Vic.

“Nung naging sila na ni Pia,’di na masyado galante siBossing. Nako-control ni Piaang pagbigay ni Vic ng perakung kani-kanino na lumalapit

sa kanya for help.”For all it’s worth, I hope

they can save their friendship,if and when love has gone.

Guessing gameThe root cause of the

James Yap-Kris Aquino’ssplit-up remains to be a guess-ing game.

Some assume that one ofthe reasons is James’ sister, who had a tiff with Kris.

Others insinuatethat trouble startedwhen they sold theirValle Verde home in orderto contribute to PresidentNoy’s campaign fund, whichJames wasn’t too happyabout.

There are also those whopresume that it must be be-cause of James’ “extra-curricu-lar” activities.

Kris has always said that ina relationship, it’s not one ma-jor fight that ruins everythingbut an accumulation of littleirritants that suddenly ex-plodes.

A LTHOUGH Pia Guanio has denied it, rumorscontinue to circulate that she and Vic Sottohave split up. Has it something to do with in-

ternal/external factors, like their age difference?

Pinoy wows judges, audiencein ‘America’s Got Talent’PINOY cyberspace is once againabuzz with news of anotheremerging Filipino talent whowowed judges a few days agoat the talent search show Ameri-ca’s Got Talent.

Twenty-year-old Luigi Senoearned accolades from all threejudges and a standing ovationfrom the live audience with hiscover of Sunday Morning whichhe performed during the finalauditions on June 30.

Sharon Osbourne told Luigi,“You have a really cool, relaxedstyle.”

Howie Mandel called him a“great entertainer” and added,“if you have an album out rightnow I would be listening to youin my car.”

And from Piers Morgan:“You’ve got this charm aboutyou which I think is definitelygoing a long way.”

In a short interview beforehis performance, Luigi said hewas from the Philippines butmoved to the United States with

his family nine years ago. Onhis website, Luigi says he isoriginally from Cebu.

The singer, who plays acous-tic guitar, is a music major inSan Bernardino College Valleyin California.

“What I really wish rightnow is to be able to visit my rel-atives in the Philippines (espe-cially my grandma who is 87

years old), whom we have notseen since we got here 9 yearsago.” he says in his website. Buthe probably wrote that beforehe realized that he now has ashot at becoming the winner inthe latest season of America’sGot Talent.

From day one, they alreadyseemed to be mismatched,James being a simple, quietprobinsiyano who made it bigin Manila, and Kris being anold rich and feisty elite.

They have totally differentsensibilities, but love is sup-posed to bridge all that. Toobad, love isn’t always enough.

As Tita Cristy Fermin putsit, “Nung kinasal si James kayKris, parang ang isda pinatiramo sa lupa.”

Kris has been through helland back in the name of love. Now her heart is in limbo. How many more of Kristeta’stelevised crying moments be-fore her heart gets to Para-dise?

Peace with PatrickJennylyn Mercado has un-

loaded excess emotional bag-gage by finally making peacewith Patrick Garcia, father ofher 2-year-old son, Alex Jazz.

“Patrick’s sister Cheska in-vited AJ and me to the birth-day party of her baby, Kendra, and that’s where Pat saw AJfor the first time,” Jen said.“There was no drama or awk-wardness. Everything camenaturally because the timingwas right and the woundshave healed.”

What was Patrick’s reaction

when he saw their child? “Heteased me and said, ‘SorryJen, kamukha ko,’” she re-counted.

So that should end all crazyspeculations that AJ is notPatrick’s son.

“I’m happy that kamukha niAJ ang dad niya,” she said.“Good genes naman.”

How does Dennis Trillofeel about her “reunion” withPatrick? “He was the one whoencouraged me to fix matters, for the sake of AJ,” Jen ex-plained. “Being a single parenthimself, he can relate to mymotherhood issues. I’m re-lieved that OK na kami ni Pat.Nabunutan kami lahat ngtinik.”

Jen and Dens take their ro-mance to a different level inthe period film, “Rosario,”which will be narrated by noless than Tito Dolphy. It willentail faithful recreations ofPhilippine houses in the 1920sand 1930s, as well as majorstreets like Binondo and Escol-ta during the pre-war era.

Jen portrays Rosario, a so-phisticated woman ahead ofher time who lives accordingto her heart’s desires. Dennisplays Alberto, a sensual, rogueplayboy who lives life in thefast lane. The young loverswill get a feel of what it is liketo love in the time of tragedy.
