Biological Synthesis of Structural Proteins and Applications Kai Liu, Jing-jing Li, Jun Ma, Bai-mei Liu, Chao Ma

In this review, we summarized recent progress in the design and biosynthesis of artificial proteins based on spidroins and non-spider sequences.

The structures, compositions, mechanical modulation, and applications of protein-based fibers and adhesives were discussed. The

achievements in structural proteins driven by synthetic biology certainly will accelerate translational applications of the protein-based

mechanomaterials. Finally, perspectives and challenges of protein-based biomaterials were provided.

By confining the polymerization in nano-sized reactors, Prof. Hu and coworkers from East China University of Science and Technology

demonstrated a novel strategy to control molecular weights with a narrow polydispersity.

Semi-aromatic Polyamides Containing Siloxane Unit toward High Performance Jia-wei Long, Xiao-hui Shi, Bo-wen Liu, Peng Lu, Li Chen, Yu-zhong Wang

A novel kind of silicon-containing semi-aromatic polyamides were designed and prepared through the aromatic nucleophilic substitution

polycondensation. The introduction of siloxane units into polyamides not only significantly reduced the water absorption, but also greatly improved

the flame retardancy and maintained the excellent mechanical properties.

We review the background and progress on the linear rheology of 3-dimensional giant molecules. They represent soft-cluster, a new kind of 3D

polymers. The critical diameter can be associated with glassy dynamics, thus we claim the existence of cooperative glass.

Direct Polymerization of Lysine and Furfural via Ugi Reaction Yue Tao, Jin-long Chen, Shi-xue Wang, You-hua Tao

Lysine and furfural are naturally available renewable resources, but their simple and

general polymerization still remains a key challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that

natural lysine and furfural monomers can be polymerized via Ugi reaction in a step-

growth fashion under mild conditions.

Preparation of High-melt-strength, High-impact-strength Polypropylene by α-Alkenylmethyldichlorosilane-mediated Heterophasic Copolymerization of Propylene Zhi-jian Zhang, Li Wang, Feng-hua Zu, Liu-ting Hong, Ya-wei Qin, Jin-yong Dong

An α-alkenylmethyldichlorosilane was used to mediate heterophasic copolymerization of propylene, which synthesized PP impact copolymers

with long chain-branched structure and phase-separated morphology. The strategy provides a solution to simultaneously improve the melt strength

and impact resistance of PP, two notorious drawbacks undercutting PP as an important thermoplastic polymer.

Revealing the Relationship between the Biocompatibility and the Bound Water of Poly(ethylene glycol) by Single-molecule Force Spectroscopy Jun Xu, Nan-pu Cao, Yao-xin Xiao, Zhong-long Luo, Yu Bao, Shu-xun Cui

The marked deviation between the F-E curves of PEG obtained in PBS and

nonane can be assigned to the bound water rearrangement of PEG in aqueous

solution. This additional energy cost (Ew) is ~1.59 kBT/unit (3.93 kJ/mol), which

is closed to those of biomacromolecules. It may be an important factor for the

excellent biocompatibility of PEG.

Highly Sensitive Two-dimensional Photonic Crystal Hydrogel Cu2+ Sensor Chen-hui Liu, Gen-qi Liu, Chen-rui Ren, Hong-kai Shi, Ke Xue, Yun-lei Cao, Huan-huan Li, Jian-xun Liu

The PVA-SH 2DPCH prepared by our group can respond to Cu2+ with high sensitivity. It shows the adsorption equilibrium in Cu2+ solution with

different concentrations. It can be seen that the structural color of PVA-SH 2DPCH changes from orange red to blue green and then to blue, with

the increase of Cu2+ concentration.

Synthesis of“Si―H”Containing Polyethylene and Its Functionalization Xiu-chong Lin, Yin-ran Wang, Lei Jiang, Fang Guo

The copolymerization of ethylene and 10-dimethylsilyl-1-decene (Decene-SiH) by (C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(CH2SiMe3)2(THF) has been successfully

achieved to afford ethylene/Decene-SiH copolymers with controllable compositions, high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight

distribution. By efficiently transforming the “Si―H” groups of the resulting copolymers into other polar groups, versatile functionalized

polyethylene with hydrophilic properties were obtained.
