Vol. 4 No 14 May 1986Dear Chris t ian Friends ,I am writing this in late April in Pennsylvania. Yesterday I cleared an inch ofsnow off my car before I l e f t the house, but I m su re sp rin g is comingJanuary and February were f i l led with lots of speaking in Florida churches andonce a t Florida Christ ian College. Lwas also ahle_-to^9et bacLJLo my book pro-jec t for our Ghana Christian College l ibrary. More new books were ordered andmore Library of Congress cards ordered. Several persons a t Florida ChristianCollege are helping us with our book orders. Now in Pennsylvania, a friend inthe church is helping to complete many of the LC cards. In March, my out-of-Florida t r ip began and took me to Tennessee, Virginia, Ohio,Maryland and Pennsylvania for speaking on the college and related work in GhanaI t was a blessing to be able to vis i t fr iends, relat ives former co-workers, andfamilies of present co-workers along the way These visi t s took me i nto add it iona lstates. Praying the Lord would use me to challenge young people, I visited andspoke at Milligan College and Eastern Christian College, too. I stopped byCincinnat i Bible Seminary to check some of the arrangements for Chr is tian Adjei ss ta y th er e and also talked to Darris Sweet. Darris is in his sophomore year at S and has been approved by our stateside non-profit group and by the G boardin Ghana to come to Ghana in 1987 (January) for a one year internship under thesupervision of Jeff Hostetter. Pray for Darris and encourage him in any way youc n

I arrived in Pennsylvania the day before Christian Adjei was to arrive in New YorkMy s is ter took a day off from teaching and drove with me to Kennedy Airport to pickhim up. That was my f i rs t experience with New York driving and i t wasn t too bad.I t was so good to see Christian after a year and a half He is thin and weary anddeserves this short res t before summer school begins. On the way home from NewYork we drove through some snow flurries , but fortunately none lay.Christian brought all kinds of let ters and news with him Between the very heavywork load on all th e co lleg e tea chers plus a deteriorating postal situation, ourcommunication has been spotty at best for the las t six months or more He told meof the fine f i rs t year class that l ikes to bring i l lustrat ions from physics andeconomics in to the classroom discuss ions of conver ts won in t h r ee new locat ionsbut no one yet raised up to provide ongoing leadership.. . of a large well-attendedChristmas convention accompanied by renewed requests fo r mate rial help from themission and unfavorable comparison with another Christian church missionary whodoes pay a preacher in Ghana... of a recent graduate who is doing very well witha new church and classes he hopes will turn into a college extension.. . of th ePublic Relation Officer s going on extended leave bu t the work of challengingchurches in Ghana to support the college being undertaken by the Senior Prefectand an administrative ass is tant of many church victories, headaches and heartaches. Pray especially for the churches during Christian s absence from GhanaHe wil l be here un t i l a f te r Christmas t h i s yearChristian and I drove to Richmond Virginia on April 14th for some discussions withJeff and Sherrie Hostetter, Dick Hostetter and Carl Bridges. We also said farewellto Jef f and Sherrie , who l e f t on the 16th for the i r second term in Ghana Pray for

2The f ac ua lt y s en t me a two year tex t book order that to ta ls over 4,000.00 l i s tprices. Again, Florida Christian College is doing the ordering for us and thatw i l l save us a otThe money for a new double cab pickup for my use is being transferred by my forwarding agent. I t may take three to five months for the order to be f i l led inGhana. I hope we real ly do get the red one we have ordered.A very exciting piece of news from Ghana is the opportunity to buy a mult i -uni t ,one-story house near the col lege. We have seen the need for many months, butthere was nothing available in a heavily populated neighborhood. Now the Lordhas p rovided one . WE NEED A 10,000.00 OWN P YMENT S SOON S POSSIBLE. I hesita te to ask for more money when many churches have helped th is year for my necess ary r et urn expenses, but we do need this building for dormitory space and livingqua rte rs fo r s taf f and facul ty. Any help that .you can give will help us reachthis goal. Perhaps some of you who get this newsletter bu t who have not helpedfor a while individually or through your church could do so now. I f you decideto send a special gif t mark i t NEW HOUSE I t is no t a new building, but new tous. We do not have the money now so th is is a step in fai thOur greatest need for used clothing is men s shirts , medium and small, especiallylong-sleeved. You may send them to First Christian Church 2565 E. Kaley AvenueOrlando, Florida 32806 by June 1s tEnoch Nyador will graduate from Emmanuel School of Religion June 1s t His wifeLydia had thei r f i rs t child, a baby gi r l on March 3rd in Leningrad. Enoch andLydia a re find ing their separation far more diff icult than they dreamed. If Enochcan obtain a scholarship to study in Russia, he will join his wife and child forthree years until Lydia finishes he r medical training. Pray for this youngChristian couple as they face cri t ical decisions, and pray for us in the college. If Enoch does not join the faculty in September, we shall be very shorthanded.Ron and Doris Rife are making progress on the i r plans to serve in Ghana from mid-June to mid-August. David Kalb has delayed his t r ip t i l l September. He expectsto do intensive teaching for a month.Christian Adjei has preached twice in supporting churches and has flown to Ohiothis weekend to represent the college in a Faith Promise ral ly He has also borrowed two commentaries on Revelation so he can begin preparatio n for h is f i r s tsummer school class We both had our eyes checked for new bi-focals l a s t week.I am s t i l l finalizing orders and working on other paperwork, including an applic at io n fo r a new v isa to Ghana. Chr i s t i an and I wil l l eave fo r Cinc inna t i onMay 8th or 9th. After several more speaking dates, I will attend Enoch s graduation on June 1st and be back in Orlando by June 5th. Vol. 5 No. 1Dear Chris t ian Friends ,I t is with pleasure that I write to you once again from Ghana af ter an absence of twoyears. I arrived here with Pa t Metz on July 9 after a long but uneventful fl ight . were met by the Couches, Rifes, Fultons, and Hostetters and about a dozen Ghanaianfriends from the local church. Three of the men had gotten permission to come intothe luggage area, so getting through customs with heavy suitcases was much easier thanu sua l

Our f i rs t two weeks were spent trying to help Pat see as much of Ghana and of our workhere as possible. After serving as forwarding agent for Ghana Christian College forseven years, she was getting a firsthand look. visited the last regular chapelservice of th e college and thri l led to th e sound of 44 strong, young voices s ingingGhanaian praises to the Lord. Joseph Nsiah preached a fine sermon. That very afternoon Sherrie Hostetter took us grocery shopping downtown. had noteven bothered to shop downtown for severa l yea rs before I le f t because there wasnothing there. Even though I had been told about i t the reali ty of seeing numerousstores , shops and kiosks full of goods of all kinds was amazing. The prices are nottoo bad i f you convert them into dollar values, bu t in this economy, where the minimum wage per day is th e equivalent of one dollar, they are high. A small box of soappowder is 2.00 and an egg is about .15 t much better than the .50 t of several yearsago). Spare parts and gasoline are also more plentiful. That has increased the density of traff ic so that trips to town are necessarily slow and arduous as you usuallyhave to search for parking places and watch out for unusual driving habitsOur f i r s t Sunday we worshipped with Abeka Christ ian Church. HowChristians here again, seeing how they have grown and changed, and seeing new faces.I also noticed there are a number of ol d fac6s missing, but as time goes by, we willlearn what has happened to them and maybe help to revive some. The worship servicesare held in the half-completed chapel. I t is very spacious, but lacks many finishing touches. There are no outside doors. A roof damaged in a windstorm has notbeen repaired. The side extensions have only the roughest of concrete floors. Thereis one fan above the pulpit to save the leaders from some misery in the heat (i t snot hot yet). are grateful for a roof, even a damaged one, over our heads, but welong for the day when funds will permi t us to make i t a l i t t le more convenient anda t t r a c t i v eJe f f and Sher ri e Hoste tt er had been in Accra for a vacation, so Pat and I rode withthem back to Sunyani. got to see their home, the garage converted into an office/church resource center, and meet some of the ir friends. took a government busback to Accra. For the six hour tr ip we sat on jump seats that fold across the aisle.Since we were right at the front, we had to shift our bags, fold up our seats, andfind a place to stand every time someone else wanted on or off .The Board of the college sponsored a reception for Pat and me. There were some shortspeeches and refreshments. The Board has also started having farewell parties forthose leaving. With us coming, and then Pat, Couches, Fultons and Rifes all leavingwithin a month, i t has been a very social time. also attended the student-sponsoredend-of-school party, complete with r ice and goat stew.

Everythingwas done in good order, but i t was unusual to have several people slapping othersin order to k i l l some very large, annoying f l ies One o f th e le ad ers was slappedr i g h t on the s e a t o f his pants. The church fe d us af ter th e service and Pat hadher f i r s t t ry a t eating with her hand.Pat a ls o got to collect s h e l l s from th e beach, vi s i t two o f th e o l d e s t cas t le for tson th e coast, tour th e h y dr o -e l ec tr ic p l an t a t th e kosombo dam, and drive through agame park where the main attraction is baboons. She also participated in some prayerand planning meetings. She returned home July 23 with a lo t of memories we pray willmake her volunteer service more meaningful. The weeks since Pat s departure have been full of meetings of a ll kinds to plan fo reveryone s departure (Couches, Rifes, and l a st l y Fultons), for the coming school yearand also for the future of th e c ol le ge . s I wrote earl i er, th e c ol le ge is burstinga t th e seams of its physical faci l i t i es and financial support. Since th e piece ofproperty with housing fac i l i t ies already on i t is so w e ll -s ui te d t o our most immediateneeds and was offered a t such a reasonable price according to our lawyer), we havegone ahead on faith and made a down payment and floated a loan in Ghana to pay fo rth e r e st . We thank and prais e th e Lord that th e Blcomsburg, P Church of Christ isgoing to raise 5000.00 to help with this l an d p urc ha se . This will enable us to makepayments on the loan for about six months. We will have 18 more payments aft er thatand will need lots of help from God s people. The payments are 800. monthly and themost we can squeeze out of ou r present bare-bones budget is 200. monthly. WILL YOUHELP?

The college Board in Ghana is a ls o t ry ing to help. A transport business is being setup an d w i l l purchase Rick F ulto n s tr uc k. One-third o f th e inc ome from th e bus i ne s swill be used for expenses, o ne -t hi rd w il l be laid aside fo r replacement capital, ando ne -t hi rd w il l be given to the college for i t s work. I t will be several more monthsbefore th i s is in fu ll swing. The public r el at io n s o ff ic e continues i ts mission o fchallenging local Christians and churches to support the college, although its ac tivity is reduced until David Couch s return in January. In a discussion of facilities and budgets, we never lose sight of the purpose behindl t_a lJLr :^a iv i t ia tn CJirist. iait-men_and-WQmeii-of g o o d . snunH R ih lo p du ration and leadership training. We ar e expecting a student body of over 50 this monthanother new record. Eight of them wil> be housed in th e former library. That roomis needed as a classroom, but until th e new property is free of its present tenants,i t will have to serve as a dormitory.Even with th e new property, we will s t i l l be short of office space, dormitory spacefor women large enough classrooms, and eventually library space. All Bible collegesin Ghana are growing rapidly. To maintain our position as one of the leading collegesand to continue to make our unique contribution to restoration ideals of unity basedon Scripture, we are at a critical point of decision: either to continue to scrapeby and add to our facilities in bits and pieces, or to commit ourselves to a largervision of an overall plan for the development of t he co lle ge and its facilities.David Couch has such an architectural plan for twenty years of development in hispossession. I f you are interested in being a part of a college that will eventuallyaccommodate 200 students from all over West Africa and other parts of Africa as well,pl e a s e c o n ta c t David.

Enoch Nyador was unable to fu lf i l l his dream of being with his wife 1n Russia whileshe finishes he r medical training. e and Lydia and the baby all came to Ghana fromRussia about the middle of July. At the end of August, Lydia re tu rned to Leningradto resume her studies. Their baby daughter remains in Ghana under the care of Lydia'ssis te r Enoch is liv ing in college housing and will be a fulltime teacher this yearwith us. Pray for this family during the i r years of separation.Mrs. Akua Eghagha both teaches and works in the l ibrary. She l ives off campus withher husband and daughter and comes to the college each day. She graduated from a y e a r a g oJoseph Nsiah is a fulltime teacher, college treasurer, and now Acting Principal inth e absence of Christian Adjei. He is working very hard on administ ra tive collegematters, including the sett ing up of the transport business and the r eg is tr at ion o fthe new property. He also directs the work of the adminis tra t ive ass is tan t Hiscollege-owned house is right in front of mine. Joseph is also a member of the collegeBoard

Then there is Dorothy Eunson She will teach fulltime, supervi se the use of twot rucks, administer the purchase and sale of commodities to fa cu lty and s t a f f once amonth, serve as Repai r/Maintenance Superintendent in the absence of David Couch , lookafter the Couches' house and i ts temporary use by others, and maintain the books andcorrespondence relating to the U. S. side of the mission. She is also pro temSecretary to the College Board in David' s absence .Have you noticed the fai lure to mention church-related work? Every teacher is extremely active in every phase of Christian work. I have ta ken over Deb's English-speakingS. S. class for l i t t l e children. Even though we have no Americans at th e present, i tis s t i l l needed for two Ghanaian children who speak only English. Three others speakEng li sh v ery wel1.The res t of the Sunday School is under the able supervis ion of a Christian EducationCommittee established by David Couch early th is year. I am the co ll ege r ep resen tat ive on i t again during David's absence. I t*is a real delight to participate in,since i t s members are capable and genuinely concerned with I ts task. They had muchalready planned for me to do . I am to s ta r t a twelve Bible Survey- course on Thur^tJaynights and teach a two week training se ss ion for song leaders. I asked them to postpone a class for those who give Communion meditations t i l l David returns Since Iam already a member of the general church committee and of the vis i ta t ion group, isi t any wonder that I am looking forward to January so that I can give back to DebCouch th e role of unofficial advisor to the Women s Fellowship?Oh, I almost forgot . With my newly acquired degree in Library Science, I am going towork on cataloging books and supervising Mrs. Eghagha and student l ibrar ians in mysp are tim eOne big help I have is that until Couches come back, I have Mensah Ganyo, our househelper, every day. e is getting some special jobs done that are usually neglectedand is preparing the outs id e tr im and some inside walls for painting when my shipme nt c o m e s

Another new aspect of the work here is ano ther extension of the college in a towncalled Koforidua. One of the 1985 graduates has established a congregation thereand has reached an agreement with the college for establishing night classes in thename of the col lege. He ant i c ipa tes 20 students th is f i r s t term. From us, he getsl im i ted f inanci al help for two years, a typewriter and le t terhead, a few books fora l ibrary and lots of free advice. Patrick Mensah, the preacher /teacher , is in tel l igen t ded ica ted and unafraid o f hard work.

The truck I specially ordered was to arrive this month. However the company gaveus the chance to have one that was in the port in August. There was a lot of government red tape to go through, but we were granted duty exemption. Pra ise the LordThe actual release of the truck has not yet taken place because of more red tape andlicensing, etc., but we are getting closer My only regret is that i t will be silverinstead of red, (ha). If we had waited until the red one arrived to begin the paperwork, i t would be October or later before we took possession. This way i t will allbe done before the paperwork on my shipment has to star t .I am happy to be back in the work in Ghana even though i t involves some sad times, too. The five year old boy of one of our church families was accidentally electrocuted while working in a chicken house in the family compound. Children are notgiven the full wake-keeping and funerals that adults are, but our Christians werewonderful in spending time with the family, helping and comforting and sharingtheir grief. Benches were placed in the bare dirt compound under a tree. Peoplecame and went. The second evening I took a group in the truck. Others were alreadythere from the church, and we sa t and talked softly in the moonlight. We also sanghymns and choruses part of th e time. The only funeral was a brief committal serviceat the cemetery. It is often difficult for a family to get a body out of the morguebecause even there opportunities for extortion exist. Some of the Chris tians waitedat t he co ll eg e for four or five hours and then had to return home to care for families. The elders and a good number of others did go to the cemetery, though.Just ten days ago, the wife of our administrative assistant gave birth to prematuretwins at the midwife s, but th ey d ied. His wife l ives in their home town becausewe don t have a place for them to live as a family t i l l we have possession of thenew property. The babies were long since buried by the time Mr. Dadzie got therel a s t weekend.Perhaps you were waiting to hear from me in Ghana before writing. Now you are hearingplease wri te. Continue to remember al l of us in prayer, including the Couches in theStates, and Christian Adjei at Cincinnati Bible Seminary. Pray for David Kalb steaching visit in November. Pray about payments on the loan for the new property andhelp us if you can. Please pray for our hea lth and our spiritual strength and confidence in the Lord, so that worry cannot creep in and be a burden. I remember manymany o F you and your special needs before the Lord. Thank you for your ministry tome during my furlough. God bless you al l .
