The TattooTurn off the taps.

The Military Tattoo originatedin 17th century Holland when

British drummers were sent outto round up soldiers from local

taverns. To get them out,Innkeepers would order doe

den tap toe or turn off the taps.

What is a Tattoo?Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in sev-enteenth-century Holland. In those days, when British troops served in the lowlands,it was the custom for a drummer to marchthrough the streets beating his drum towarn the troops that it was time to leavethe taverns and return to their billets forthe night.

The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of thedrum, would order "doe den tap toe" or"turn off the taps", the local last call equivalent of "time, gentlemen, please".

In English, "taptoe" became "tattoo" andover the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and, inan early exercise in public relations, the bandperformed concerts for the local population.

What started as a practical daily routine inarmy life is today the military tattoo, ashow featuring the lively rhythm of marchingbands, elegant dancers, stirring cadence ofthe pipes and drums and breathtakingmilitary displays.

Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan

Sunday, August 9th2009 - 10am

St. Andrew’sPresbyterian Church 325 St. George St. W,

Fergus

The Kirkin' O' the Tartan tradition is an oldHighland one. After the defeat of the Scotsby the English in 1746, the wearing of thetartan and the keeping of any Highland waysor culture was forbidden in hopes this wouldforever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However, as the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well, they clung totheir ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin' was an importantpart of this in that one Sunday a year, thepopulace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan and, at a certainmoment set aside in the service, the tartanwas touched while the minister pronounceda blessing on all tartans and the Scots oncemore pledged their loyalty and respect fortheir old traditions.

Join the Clans, Stuart Cameron and TomLeadbeater for The Fergus Scottish Festival &Highland Games version of the Kirkin’. Theservice will be led by David Whitecross who’ssermon is entitled John Knox, Scotland. Please stay after the service and enjoy a strupak in the church hall.

Pipers & Pipe BandSociety of OntarioChampion Supreme

Highland Games

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade”levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5, withGrade 1 including the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers.

The Festival runs competitions for individual pipers and drummers, as well as whole pipe bands. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipersjudge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means.Bands who choose to compete must meet certain requirements. Bands in similar grades are required to performtunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (a set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher thegrade, the more difficult the requirements are. Also, the difficulty level of playing is raised for higher grades. For example, a Grade 5 band would only have to submit one medley of marches (around 3 tunes). A band in Grade 2may have to perform a medley of tunes of different styles and time signatures (around 6-8 tunes). The length oftime allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-5 minutes to 7-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands(Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes (which judges draw at the starting line todetermine which they will perform). This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players, and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are twopiping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per therules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded.

Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section (corps),use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect withinthe entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen, and overall band sound. Afterthe Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from eachjudge, containing comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.
