Developed over the course of two three thousand years the yurt provided an ideal dwelling place for the nomads of the steppes from eastern Asia to Europe. Although rarely used as housing in Turkmenistan today, the yurt is still very popular in other countries such as Mongolia, where a large number of the population still abide in these extraordinary houses.

The yurt is a round structure with a domed roof and was suitable for almost any landscape. It was prefabricated and had individual parts that were easily made and repaired. A yurt could be quickly assembled and disassembled ready for transportation via camels and horses, which was ideal for the summer months when shepherds would

take the sheep into the foothills to graze. The yurt was seismically safe owing to flexibility of the construction and could also accommodate changes in climate and temperature.

In hot weather the felt walls would be raised by as much as 50cm which allowed cool air to enter the Yurt. Cane or reed screens were also added in hot weather instead of felt which allowed air flow through the dwelling whilst still offering protection from the heat and dust. In summer, the hole at the top of the yurt would also be left open to encourage air flow. Another benefit of leaving the top hole open is that it allowed light to enter into the yurt. This provided a patch of light on the interior walls, which

would move around the yurt during the course of the day and acted as a kind of sun dial to tell the time for prayers and meals. In cold weather the main external felts would be lowered to stop any warm air escaping from beneath the edges and the hearth would be lit for warmth and cooking, which is an outdoor activity during the summer months.

Yurts are divided into three main groups: - main yurts, intended for receiving guests, were larger and more richly decorated. Yurts that served as housing were generally smaller, although a yurt might have housed as many as 15 family members. The smaller yurts were ideal for transporting on a horse

when temporary shelter was required, for example when shepherds were out tending to their sheep. These small yurts would have also been used for storage and would have sat alongside the main dwelling.

Yurts were known as ak - meaning white yurt, or gara - meaning black yurt. When new felt was added to a yurt it was white in colour, however the felt darkened over time under the influence of smoke, fumes and natural elements.

There are two main designs of yurt the

Turkic and the Mongolian. The main difference between the two types is the roof poles that they used. The Turkic yurts utilised bent roof struts, which would have been shaped under steam and which gave the yurt its iconic domed shape. Mongolian yurts, however, used straight poles giving the roof a slight slope. The domed roof allows for more space in the interior of the yurt and these Turkic yurts were used by the Turkmen, Kyrgyz, Kazakh and Karakalpak people. The Mongolian yurts were popular among the nomadic people of Mongolia, Buryatia and Tibet.

Constructing a yurtA yurt would be assembled in several stages. Once an ideal location had been chosen for

the yurt, all of the bags and belongings of the family would be placed on the ground in what would become the interior of the yurt. When placing the yurt factors such as the direction of prevailing winds was taken into consideration. The door frame would have been the first thing that would have been placed on the southerly edge of the yurt. The individual panels of lattice, made out of local varieties of willow, were then tied in place with camel or sheeps wool cord. The felt mats were then placed around the walls of the yurt in a particular order first the southwest and then the southeast and so on. The best pieces of felt were used to cover the walls and roof on the north side of the yurt to protect it from the wind and so that rain water would not

The characteristic dome roof of the yurt was created with bent wooden poles that were set along the top edge of the lattice panels and held in place at the centre of the roof by a wheel made of wood. This also allowed for an opening at the top of the yurt which allowed for smoke to escape the interior and also provided ventilation during hot summer months. During the winter this hole would have been covered over with a thick felt mat which could easily be folded back as required.

The outside of the yurt was decorated with a woven band called an oyyup which also served to hold the felt covering in place. The oyyup was between 10 and 15 metres long and between 20 and 40 centremetres deep, and although they were not richly decorated, they gave a pleasing aesthetic to the yurt. The band also reflected the circle an intrinsic shape of life.

Some bands, especially those used to decorate a wedding yurt, were richly decorated and often incorporated silk as well as wool. Special carpet motifs were woven into the design and bright colours were used. Bands were also sometimes used to decorate the interior of the yurt.

The DoorwayThe doorway to the yurt was covered by a carpet called an ensi, which protected the interior of the yurt from dust, heat, cold, wind and rain. It also served as an amulet protecting against evil and is one of the most complex designs of the Turkmen carpets. The rich decoration would face the interior of the yurt and served to represent the inner search of man for kindness and perfection.

The density of the ensi is always very high with up to 500 knots per square metre! The central rectangular field is divided into four sections, representing the four corners of the world. The upper and lower sections are also divided by a diametrical line which symbolises the celestial sphere and earth. The majority of the patterns and symbols woven into the ensi were connected with notions of fertility, including symbols for the tree of life and a sunflower. The edges were often decorated with the pattern of vine leaves and some designs served to promote spring rains and rich harvests. The upper section of the ensi would

include the depiction of a mihrab, an arched Islamic prayer niche found in mosques.

There are a number of rites and religious beliefs that are associated with the yurt. The threshold was considered sacred and people were not allowed to sit or stand on it. The Turkmen forefathers believed it was My threshold - my sanctuary, and a horseshoe was often nailed to the threshold as a talisman.

When entering the yurt people were supposed to utter words of welcome, regardless of whether there were people in it or not. It was also an ancient custom to worship the hearth at the centre of the yurt and a bride entering her husbands yurt welcomed the hearth first.

The men would have lived in the west section and women in the east section. The hearth would have sat in the centre of the floor. The area at the rear of the tent, opposite the door, is known as the tor and is the place of honour within the Yurt. The head of the family might have sat here, as well as honoured guests.

as well as placed on the floor. A number of carpets bags would have also hung from the walls, each with a particular purpose. Larger bags served as wardrobes for clothing, there were bags for cooking and household utensils and some were used for storing instruments and tools for craft work. There were also small bags specifically for money and jewellery, to name just a few.

There are more than 100 types of carpeted articles and each had a particular shape and design and was invariably finished with colourful fringing. The chemche torba was used for keeping spoons. The duz torba was used for storing salt, an at-torba was used whilst foraging and a chopan tobra was used by shepherds.

Although infrequently used as homes in

Turkmenistan today, Yurts can still be seen during weddings and national celebrations. It is also common for families to have yurts erected in the courtyard or garden of their house and people still enjoy the comforts of this traditional house. There are fantastic displays of yurts and the various carpeted articles associated with them, in the National Museum of the Turkmen Carpet in Ashgabat. The State Museum in Ashgabat also has a wealth of information and artefacts about life in and around the yurt.

In the 21st century, the hydrocarbon industry (by which we generally mean oil and gas) is a global business. The industrialised nations rely heavily on both oil and gas to drive their economies, and hence those countries which have such resources are very well placed to take advantage of this need. Turkmenistan has long been renowned as a country which is blessed with a wealth of both oil and gas, but particularly gas. During Soviet times, numerous gas fields were discovered and developed in Turkmenistan, and exports to Russia were a major feature of this industry. wSince independence, Turkmen geologists and engineers have continued this great tradition, and have discovered and

developed yet further gas reserves.However, in the mid2000s, a further

major gas discovery was made in eastern Turkmenistan, which dwarfs all of these earlier fields. This new field, initially named South Yolotan, is unlike all of its predecessors. Most of the fields currently on production in Turkmenistan have Cretaceous and younger age sandstone reservoirs at depths up to 3500 metres. The Galkanysh Field is different. The reservoir is older (Jurassic) and is predominantly limestone. The Galkanysh Field reservoir occurs at depths in excess of 3500 metres, and beneath a thick salt horizon. This has allowed the formation and preservation of the field. The greater depth

and the presence of the overlying salt provide significant challenges that have been met by the geologists of Turkmenistan. This makes South Yolotan analogous to some of the other giant oil and gas fields discovered within the past two decades to the north in Kazakhstan (e.g. the Kashagan, Tengiz and Karachaganak fields). However, while these Kazakh fields are often referred to as Giant fields, South Yolotan can fairly justify the title Super Giant.

Even on first discovery, South Yolotan was clearly a giant among the gas fields of the world. However, as it was gradually appraised and as further data became available, it became clear that this was indeed a Super Giant, on a par with the very largest in the world. By 2008, it could be demonstrated that the field contained GasinPlace in the range of 4-14 Trillion Cubic Metres (TCM) or 140-490 Trillion Cubic Feet (TCF). However, it was also clear, even at that early stage, that further appraisal work would inevitably demonstrate that these initial estimates would turn out to be conservative.

True to expectations, by 2011, additional seismic and drilling work had demonstrated that the South Yolotan field extended over a much greater area than initially seen, and also that its reservoir thickness was greater than first thought. Updated evaluations demonstrated that the GasinPlace volumes were now clearly in the much higher range of 13-21 TCM. This now placed the field as the second largest yet discovered in the world, behind only the supergiant South Pars/North Dome field which lies offshore in the Middle East, between Qatar and Iran. In addition, this further exploration and appraisal work also suggests that yet more of these deeper subsalt fields, of the same type (and possibly even the same size) may well exist in Turkmenistan, just waiting to be identified.

In recognition of the importance of this magnificent field and of its significance to the future prosperity of the Turkmen state, the field was re-named Galkynysh (Revival), according to resolution of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Since that time, considerable

further work has been undertaken, not just to develop the field itself but also to develop the various export pipeline routes on which its commercial development will be based. A number of simultaneous export routes are envisaged, including the existing pipelines north to Russia, a new pipeline which has already been built eastward to China (and which is likely to be further expanded),

plus potential further pipelines south through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India, and also westward to Europe. Such export projects are each of similar worldclass scale, and offer Turkmenistan access to major export markets over very many years to come.

In addition to the prosperity which the export of this gas is likely to generate, the Galkynysh field also offers Turkmenistan the opportunity to develop its own domestic petrochemical industry, using the gas as a raw feedstock for the synthesis of a wide range of further products. Such an additional industry provides yet further employment opportunities for a growing generation of Turkmen technical experts.

The commercial development of the super

giant Galkynysh field will not be an easy or a rapid exercise. Giant fields require giant world-class infrastructure and technology. The experts from Turkmengeology and Turkmengas State Concerns have already contracted companies from around the world to assist both in the analysis of the field, and in the provision of construction, equipment and expertise for its development. This work will be undertaken in a series of phases, and will require many years to complete. In doing so, it will provide both employment and prosperity for the Turkmen nation, and for many decades to come.

This stateoftheart facility is larger than many towns and is a forerunner of other similar constructions which are yet to come. The Balkan Region is situated in west Turkmenistan and is the location for some of the most incredible landscapes in the country. From volcanoes to mountain ranges, the geology of this area has been of special interest to scientists and tourists, and with Turkmenbashy Airport and the Avaza National Tourist Zone on the doorstep, it is a great place for tourists to get out and explore the breath-taking landscape.

The nature of Turkmenistan is peculiar and incredibly beautiful with flora such as forests of wild fruit and nut trees, juniper forests on mountain slopes, pistachio savanna light forests, saxaul forests; and diverse fauna such as Central Asian leopards, Argali mountain sheep, Kulans (wild ass) and goitered gazelles. You can see dazzling landscapes from picturesque mountain ranges to lifeless desert sands, from green oases to subtropical zones

with rare animals and plants.The incredibly severe nature of

Turkmenistan, which had been considered lifeless, will bring a lot of wonderful discoveries. There are deserted uplands, highlands and sand plains of the coastland; which are rich in delightful monuments of nature. Remnants of pre-historical animals such as elephants and camels have been found in this area of oil derricks and mud volcanoes.

You might discover a site of ancient human settlements and Neolithic tools or walk along dried up river beds and the remains of fresh lakes. Here, historic monuments are testimony to the turbulent antique epoch and restless middle ages of the country; and landscape monuments remind of natural cataclysms, which have taken place over tens of millions of years. Today, we will share with you information about several of the wonderful natural phenomena of this little explored, and thus mysterious, area.

Landscapes of an amazing uplandThe Krasnovodsk Upland is located in the west of Turkmenistan between the legendary Garabogaz Bay and the Krasnovodsk Bay. It is a rather deserted and severe place but has an amazing landscape where flat elevations alternate with wide degradations of the surface. The surface of the Krasnovodsk Upland is cut with endless fissures, which are dozens of metres deep, stretching from the north-west to the south-east. As with the Usturt Upland, the Krasnovodsk Upland is made of sedimentary rocks: layers of limestone, chalky clay, sandstones, and clay. Here, one may come across residual mountains low-level rock with a relative height up to 40 metres, as well as elevations which do not exceed the height of 300 metres. Each elevation has its own name Ersary-baba, Akgir, Tekedjik, Koimatdag, Tuarkyr, Chyolker, and Kaplankyr. The upland ends in an abrupt bench of rock called Kyuryaninkyure and because of the frequent elevations and fissures, this place is called the Zauzboyskiy folded area.

The landscape of the eastern uplands impresses with its amazing canyons of chalky rocks of varying shapes and colours. You can see the rare phenomenon near Gazlyata, where it is as if the elevated rock has been colourfully painted red, white and grey. The Akgyr slopes and other remnants of a whole system of calcareous rocks, deposited at the bottom of the sea in the late Cretaceous period, seem unreal formations of a lunar origin.

The virgin and unusual landscape of the Zauzboyskiy area, a rich natural habitat with inexhaustible archaeological and historical potential, continues to astonish tourists and scientists alike with its discoveries.

Natural monuments of the Mesozoic eraHuge stone spheres of a bizarre form, sometimes accumulated in two or three layers are scattered over ridges of barrows about 20 kilometres from the village of Gokdere in the Garagum desert. Here gigantic spheroids formed the whole range of three kilometres

long with the desert spreading out behind it. It is a fantastic, quite unearthly landscape that almost looks like dinosaur eggs from prehistoric times. But in reality they are a concentration of gigantic mineral formations concretions, on a burrow formation. These concretions were created by nature many millions of years ago.

As palaeontologist Aman Nigarov explained, concretions (from Latin concretio concretion, concentration); septarian nodules of a round shape in sedimentary rocks were formed by nature by way of drawing together minerals around vegetable and tree debris.

Such concretions often contain well preserved fossil forms. The centres of septarian concretions could be flakes of minerals, rock fragments, shells, teeth and bones of fishes and vegetable debris. Spherical forms prevail among the various shapes of concretions. As their bodies are permeated with siliceous substances, (rock containing
