We solemnly swear that we are up to some good.

Each issue is a learning experience for us in what we find out about our cities and our people. This month we focused on goodness and one thing is abundantly clear to us: the people of Sharqiya are a selfless bunch, overflowing with kindness and a desire to help others around them. We gathered a list of enterprises with a deep-rooted sense of social responsibility

and we spoke to two artists who write and create with a mission in mind. Also, be sure to check out our interview with the Council of CSR, a group of inspirational women with the desire to see Sharqiya on top.

We also wanted to do our own bit of social responsibility by taking care of our dear readers. And so, the next few pages include numerous ways you can fulfill your responsibility towards yourself. De-stress and learn all about aromatherapy, treat yourself to our favorite soul foods and experience the joy of fitness with Nia. But above all, be inspired to create something that you love and inspire others around you.

The evolution of Sharqiya lies in the hands of the people who choose every day to see its potential for greatness and take action. What we do to contribute with our passions and skills will determine the future of our community. So Sharqawis, make your actions count for something worthwhile. You are the unwritten pages of this magazine.

What is money personality?Your money personality is the set of characteristics and traits that govern your behavior toward money and finances.

Why is your money personality important?Understanding your money personality will help shape your approach to spending, saving and investing.

How can you learn about your money personality? The easiest way is to take a test that is widely available in various lengths and levels of detail online. The test will indicate the type of money personality type that you fall under in reasonable accuracy.

According to investopedia.com, there are four key money personality types:Big Spenders They are comfortable spending money, don’t fear debt and often take big risks when investing.Savers: Conservative people who do not care about latest trends, are often debt-free, and do not take big risks in investing.

Shoppers This type finds great pleasure in spending money, even if they do not need the purchased items. They shop to entertain and maybe even never use what they buy.

YOUR MONEY P E R S O N A L I T Y PA RT

O N E

FINANCIAL PLANNING W I T H R E E M A S A A D

Debtors They do not spend much time thinking about money, and generally spend more than they earn. They also often go into debt and don’t consider investing much.Investors They are cautiously aware of their money and try to put it to work. Their logic is: invest to cover your expenses and maybe make some extra money. Their actions are generally driven by careful decision-making. In general, people tend to fall under one of these personalities or simply are a hybrid of two. So, what word of advice do the experts have for each type? We’ll take a look at that next month.

When and why did you decide to go into children's photography? My love for photography had been there for more than 10 years, but I found myself in love with children’s

photography right after my son was born and his sweet smile was the bright star of every image I took. I kept getting deeper and deeper into this art form until I finally started Karmoosha Photography in 2013.

What do you love most about your office? It’s cozy, full of light and a constant reminder of my achievements.

What is one feature you are most proud of in your office? My desk, where I spend days and nights editing, printing and working away from the camera. I created a happy little office with lots of quotes and inspiring words to help me stay positive.

What advice would you give to our readers about being an entrepreneur and a photographer? Invest in courses and learning tools, but most importantly you must dare to experiment. The hardest thing is learning how to trust and believe in yourself and your work.

As a photographer, learn the art of business and marketing because while snapping a photo may happen naturally, selling that photo is something you need to learn.

Finally, seeking professional help is never a sign of failure like most people think; it’s actually a sign of strength and a healthier business.

What is the best part about your work? Hands down it’s having these joyful, tiny people as my clients. What are the benefits of working from home?I get to be close to my family and I never have to be separated from my child who needs me most at this young age. I don’t miss out on special moments, emergencies or even everyday routines.

And the challenges?Trying to balance family and work at home is a major challenge. I have to make a strong effort to close my computer after a certain hour and leave the office to be with my family. It’s so hard to clear my mind off work and focus on my life because my office is a constant reminder of work.

Page 20: DS Issue 4

DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 201618

What do you do?I design and create luxury handmade traveling organizers that ease the packing and unpacking process for both men and women.

What are the benefits of working from home?It reduces the stress of ever being late to work; you're always there on time! Plus, super easy access to your office any time of the day.

And the challenges?Till now, I haven't faced any challenges. It's the best decision I've ever made and I hope it stays that way.

What do you love most about your office? I love everything about it; I've handpicked every single piece in it, from furniture to pens. This office is a reflection of who I am.

What is one feature you are most proud of in your office? It's hard to pick one thing, but the fact that everything in my

office has come from hard work makes me very proud.

What advice would you give to our readers about being an entrepreneur?Set up clear goals, work hard and believe in yourself!

We learn all about EPCSR from its secretary general, Luluah Awad Al Shammari.By Mona Sabr

Protectingthe Eastern Province

The Eastern Province Council of Social Responsibility (EPCSR) stems from the vision of Prince Saud Bin Nayef and the initiative of Princess Abeer Bint Faisal. The objective was to form a council that was compatible with the vision of King Salman Bin Abdulaziz and his eagerness to build an integrated society and fulfill their needs.

THE WHO’S WHO OF THE EPCSR:Honorary Chairman: Saud Bin Nayef Bin Abdulaziz Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees: Abeer Bint Faisal Bin TurkiSecretary General: Luluah Awad Al ShammariThe Board of Trustees: A selected group of socially responsible women from the Eastern Province (EP).

The EPCSR itself aspires to be the pioneer of integration and cooperation in the social responsibility sector and works towards the following five goals:

1. Reinforce the efficiency of institutional performance

at the council.

2. Promote knowledge and cultural awareness about social responsibility in the government

and private sectors.

3. Establish strategic partnerships between the council and similar

entities locally.

4. Propose initiatives related to social responsibility programs

that meet the needs of the community, with focus on

environmental, economic and educational programs.

5. Encourage the community's participation in developing social

responsibility programs.

Page 24: DS Issue 4

DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 201622

“Sharqiya has a lead in social responsibility practices,” says Al Shammari. “It has a rich history and pleasant reputation for being on this approach at the level of individuals, institutions and companies. The EPCSR is an addition to the abundance of social responsibility practices in this region.”

Some initiatives the council has participated in include the Tarwiyat Al Haram Al Makki, which aimed to reduce the consumption of plastic bottles and replace them with environmentally friendly

bottles. Another example is the Food Security initiative, one of the biggest national initiatives to provide a strategic stockpile of water in the Kingdom. The council will also be a part of the Nogoush Al Sharqiya initiative, which aims to promote cultural heritage and the Basta initiative, which has several objectives, including raising the standard of living of poor families, decreasing visual defacement of streets and public places and partnering with the private sector to prevent irregular labor practices.

Web: epcsr.org EPCSRsa

Al Shammari encourages everyone, especially

businesses,to get involved in social responsibility in

a variety of ways:

• Embrace the council’s initiatives and include them within

businesses’ social responsibility programs and plans.

• Engender a culture of prevention and proactivity when it comes

to the environment, rather than corrective and reactive behavior.

• Promote environmental awareness.

We at Destination believe that taking care of our city and its people is our prime responsibility.

So we rounded up a number of ideas that Destination’s staff consider to be imperative in making our community a healthier, happier and sustainable place because, really, sustainability is the new cool.

1. CLEAN UP litter at parks and the Corniche with a group of friends.

2. RECYCLE WASTE by disposing them off to recycling bins or reusing the items to create new products for our homes.

3. ALWAYS TURN THE LIGHTS, AC AND TV OFF when not in use to conserve energy.

4. KEEP THE WORKPLACE CLEAN at all times by putting everything in place and throwing away trash.

10. SPREAD KINDNESS. As cheesy as this one sounds, it's the simplest and most important one.

These are just a few ideas that we spoke about at our office, there’s a lot more out there that we can do. It’s just about commitment.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E S

5. PAINTING SPEED BUMPS a different color as indication for cars to avoid accidents.

6. HOLD A GARAGE SALE of excessive things we have been hoarding for a while, and donating the proceeds to charity.

7. GO TO A RANDOM DISTRICT and teach its people a certain skill like origami or painting; something they can cherish.

8. KEEP WATER, SNACKS AND CAT FOOD IN OUR CARS for those occasions when you meet a thirsty human or cat.

9. ORGANIZE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS for the less fortunate in order for them to acquire skills that can make them financially independent.

Park Hyatt’s hospitality reaches the community.Based on the above pillars, Park Hyatt has been involved in a variety of community activities for the last couple of years such as:• Reduction of environmental impact through the cleaning of public areas around the hotel. • Celebration of Earth Hour. • Clothes and food donations to under-privileged individuals around town.

Hyatt Thrive

Being involved in such movements has motivated Park Hyatt and its staff to do more.

This year, with April being the month of Hyatt Thrive, Park Hyatt plans on continuing its efforts to help in the making of a socially responsible community by participating in the above campaigns again and adding other initiatives. These include: internal recycling policies that reduce waste sent to landfills and the conservation of natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.

In addition to that, Park Hyatt plans to integrate visits to houses of elderly people to spend some time with them, and learn from their experiences, all the while catering to their needs and happiness. The hotel also aims to take it a step further with donations this year by providing blankets, duvets and food to those in need, depending on their individual requirements.

It’s all about what you can do for others and the environment.

DOUBLE THE HAPPINESS WITH LGA CSR Initiative for Newlyweds. Staying true to their motto “Life’s Good,” LG has launched an initiative called “Wedding Festival” that aims to help newly married couples with some of their expenses by providing free home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. to those who are not able to fully cover these costs.

Being the basic needs of a running household, these home appliances are a major chunk of the expenses a family needs to take on during weddings. LG intends to alleviate this burden.

“We thought about creating a gesture for the community, but we believed in executing it in an untraditional way with an idea that really helps people in our community in a very productive and direct approach,” points out Salman Al Sabban, the Corporate Marketing Manager of LG Saudi Arabia.

Relatives of the newlyweds or the bride and groom themselves can sign up on the LG microsite, filling in details such as location of the “Milkah” and other details for LG’s team to survey and decide. CO

Nahdi launched major campaigns under the health and wellness umbrella:

CHALLENGE DIABETES A free health program offered at Nahdi Pharmacy to inform about diabetes.

The program consists of a number of sessions for people above 18 with type one or type two diabetes. Each session is dedicated to a certain topic like understanding of medicine, lab tests, talking to doctors and keeping track of blood glucose levels.

Due to the the success of this program, the Ministry of Health has decided to expand it to 50 Diabetes Resource Centers around KSA in 2016.

WAZEN A wellness program designed to raise awareness about obesity and endorse ways in fighting it successfully.

It includes a weight loss competition around the Kingdom, where individuals hoping to counter obesity, participate and involve themselves in exercise and healthy eating. The key is to “gradually change their lifestyle.”

During last year’s competition, Nahdi put weighing machines at their branches, and uploaded many videos and information on their social media pages to help the participants stay up-to-date and track their progress. Celebrities also got involved, promoting this great cause.

In the end, prizes were distributed to those who lost the most weight. A total of 3,748.7 kilograms were lost across 189,000 participants in the entire country.

As is apparent from these initiatives, Nahdi is a strong advocate and believer of practical and creative approaches, where the society can be fully involved and motivated.

“We aim to be the thought leader in health and wellbeing of society because we have a responsibility and we love the community,” adds Sarah Turkistani, Senior Manager of the Health and Community Service Program at Nahdi.

Nahdi has clearly become a leader in its role to eliminate the pharmaceutical stereotype of just being a retail outlet, by communicating the concept of health and wellness in an unconventional and meaningful way, ultimately attracting the youth, and shaping a brighter, healthier future.

La Ba2s (No problem/it’s okay)Zaina Zedan grew up in Sharqiya, studied in Boston and currently lives in Jeddah with her family. She is inspired by her own children as well as by others around her who are affected on a daily basis by the alarming rates of bullying in public and private schools. So, she came up with “La Ba2s,” a children’s book that conveys an important message in a simple way. The book is written in short and simple sentences to appeal to Zedan’s target audience – children above the age of three. Concerned about her own children losing their language, she wrote the book in Arabic to help them and others connect to their mother tongue. “La Ba2s” is a discussion-based book that illustrates multiple situations. Each page introduces a new scenario and encourages children to accept that “it’s okay to be different.”

Zaina Zedan La Ba2s (No problem/it’s okay)

I was truly inspired by my own kids and I lived the issues I wrote about firsthand. •So, Jeddah or Sharqiya? (We had to ask!)Oh, I personally choose to live in Jeddah because it is livelier but I would never abandon Khobar. I have been very influenced by it and implement a lot of my Sharqawi habits in my own home.

The book is available at

Yamoo Boutique, Ghosabi Village, Khobar and Bubbles Boutique,

King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Rd., Khobar

Some pages show characters saying that it’s okay to wear braces, use a wheelchair, stutter, make mistakes, lose and still be happy for others and many other important values. Zedan encourages the acceptance of difficult situations including physical disabilities and divorce. Her book readings, which are more of a social service in line with her education background in Special Education and Human Development, are accompanied by a mini-workshop that includes discussions, interactive activities and photo booths with customized props. The discussions aim to help children learn how to deal with bullying by telling an adult and even understanding the psyche of a bully. Workshops are also held for moms where specialists discuss bullying and

how to detect its warning signs. The book was launched last September as part of a “No Bullying” campaign at Enchanted Garden in Jeddah, where Zedan is a partner. They had also teamed up with the rising social media puppet, Afroot, to produce a four-minute video to raise awareness. Zedan is proud that the book is a 100 percent Saudi project, with illustrations by the talented Sarah Taibah (sarahtaibah.com) and crochet dolls made by Ahad Yamani (Instagram: ahad_crochet).

A Spoonful of Home Rania Moualla sees herself as a mother, wife and entrepreneur. She started as a full-time volunteer at the Dhahran Ahliyya Schools where she organized various fundraisers. She also founded the Friends of Cancer Patients Foundation, which is now known as SANAD. She is an active member of the Joud Foundation and the Saudi Cancer Society with whom she organized her first fashion show. Her fashion line, Ya Balady, started 10 years ago and she continues to donate fashionable turbans to cancer patients in hospitals in Saudi Arabia and the United States. Moualla also worked with the Down Syndrome School where she organized four fundraising fashion shows. Her cookbook, “A Spoonful of Home,” is a project close to her heart. She remembers finding one of the books her father had written, reading the dedication to his family and knowing she too had to leave something for her own family to be proud of and pass on from generation to generation. Her core intention, however, has always been to help children and so she worked with the Joud Foundation to organize two book-signing events where all proceeds went to the foundation.

The White Rose of Event PlanningAn eventful interview with a trio of passionate planners.By Anousha Vakani

When and how did you get started with Rose Blanche and event design?Rose Blanche was created by the three of us: Reem Alabdulhadi, Abdulaziz Alhashani and Rinan Farhat. The catalyzing event for us was Alabdulhadi and Alhashani’s wedding.

Between our planning of the wedding itself and Farhat’s planning of the surprise bridal shower, we all uncovered a deep passion for event design, planning and hosting.

Is there a story behind the name "Rose Blanche?" Something about French culture, language and eloquence brings music to our ears. Rose Blanche means White Rose, which represents purity, true love and is also commonly known to be the typical wedding flower.

How does Rose Blanche work to bring together the perfect event? Our local culture is centered on strong social connections and family bonding, so Rose Blanche is strategically built around that. We do not just simply design for our clients, but rather try to understand

satisfaction. We are well aware of the weight of such events on our client’s life and we value that. We go beyond our efforts to make ends meet and hear that sigh of satisfaction from clients. What kind of events do you arrange? Who should contact Rose Blanche?Rose Blanche designs an array of events such as bridals, engagement parties, baby showers, receptions, graduations, birthdays and corporate events, as well as simple dinner arrangements. We have an itching urge to impress any guests coming over and we like to serve that urge.

the depth and interests of their dreams and imagination to inspire our mood boards and events details. We are all about customization and ensuring that our events are a reflection of our client’s desires and personality. We crave the challenge of transforming any event into a gala experience and bringing it together within a time crunch. We take care of invitation cards, event furniture, dining tables, flower arrangements, lighting and favors. We challenge our creative minds and open our hearts to reach the ultimate level of perfection. What are some of the important elements of the perfect Rose Blanche event? We love to work with a client’s most intimate venue, their home, and bring everything our resources have to offer to create a memorable and cherished event. Rose Blanche’s core work is flowers and the art of arranging them. Flowers have a certain way of transforming regular places into a more whimsical and natural space. They are nature’s jewels and we like to not only accessorize our designs with flowers, but make them the focal point of any event. Above all else, we frame our work to meet the client’s

When people think about salads, they immediately think of lettuce and I am a firm believer that lettuce is nothing but a filler so avoid it whenever you can and try new veggies. This salad from Social Network Café combines some beautiful flavors in a super tasty, vegetarian-friendly salad.

The taste of the beetroot and the crunchiness of the cashews mixed with the freshness of the pomegranate and the sourness of their special dressing takes the dish to another level. Any salad like this is sure to beat the main course!

Was it worth the hype?

When they first opened, Signature Shakes had a queue that went right up to the parking lot. The novelty wore off of course, but do people still love it? Yes! Their Signature Juice, a blend of a number of fresh fruits topped with fresh cream is a best seller still and a post dinner craving of many.

It’s a Tuesday evening in the city of Khobar. The weather is perfect out on the balcony of Aioli, one of the city’s newest hotspots. Overlooking the Arabian Gulf, Aioli is the epitome of fine dining experience, enjoying the perfect combo of a scenic exterior view and a classy interior space. Opposite me sits Sarah Al Otaibi, the woman not only responsible for where we’re sitting today, but the owner of quite a few local favorites.

Al Otaibi’s journey started with the region’s very first specialized cupcake store. The first branch of A Cup of Cake opened in 2008 in Khobar, barely 4x6 meters in size. That little store soon gained rapid popularity and became the place to go to for cupcakes.

Why cupcakes? “It all started with an article,” she said. “It talked about this old dessert that had been reinvented and reintroduced and was becoming quite the hit again. Yes, cupcakes!” Armed with a couple of recipes she had always loved, Al Otaibi began baking cupcakes from home. Through a lot of perseverance, hard work and a determined spirit to succeed, she ended up with seven branches of A Cup of Cake scattered throughout the region.

The next step for Al Otaibi was opening Pastel in 2010, an elegant cafe that serves delectable cakes (the red velvet is hands down the best in town), coffee and tea.

With Pastel, Al Otaibi’s approach evolved where

the aim was to create the ultimate cafe experience, with charming decor inclusive of a cake boutique. She wanted to introduce a wide-range of celebration cakes in all kinds of flavors. Soon enough, Pastel became the go-to destination for cakes. New Pastel cake outlets will soon open in Doha and Dammam.

Unsatisfied with just serving sweets, her next project was opening Ain Cafe in 2012, with a menu of light meals, salads, sandwiches, along with a variety of desserts and coffee. What gave Ain its edge were Arab/Turkish interiors both modern and mystical. Its coziness and wholesome menu made it an instant success.

Many believe that opening a restaurant or a cafe is as simple as putting on an apron and heading into the kitchen, but every successful restaurateur knows this couldn’t be further from the truth. Al Otaibi quickly learned that behind every profitable eatery is a restaurant owner with a solid business strategy. What she lacked initially in business acumen she made up for in her thirst to learn and to get better equipped for success.

The process of starting a business was much

harder when I first started, she said.

Now, it has improved, amazingly even.

Finally we arrive back to Al Otaibi’s latest addition: Aioli. Exuding sophistication in its interiors and menu, every visit

is a meal for the senses. Its location, with its great view, only adds to the restaurant’s gravitational pull. Al Otaibi is not merely a woman with great taste and culinary mastery; she is a successful businesswoman who never stopped learning throughout her journey.

“My advice to anyone who decides to venture out and start their own business: Keep educating yourself,” she said. “Keep learning! Even when you’ve succeeded, never stop learning. That’s how you empower yourself, leading you towards greater success.”

Operating from her very own centralized bakery, Al Otaibi is the model serial entrepreneur, equipped with passion, dedication and foresight; clearly perfecting the recipe for success.

We get the lowdown on Nia and why you should be dancing it.By Anaa Mansouri

So, Manal, what is Nia?Nia is all about joy in movement. There are 52 base moves and everything we do is combinations and variations of those moves. Nia draws its essence from healing arts such as yoga, dance arts such as Jazz and martial arts such as Tai Chi and Taekwondo, melding the three into one flowing experience. Nia encourages you to be fully aware of your own body and how it moves; how your body feels is all you need to pay attention to. That’s why we

practice Nia barefoot, allowing us to feel all the sensations from the 7,000 nerve endings that we have in our feet. Who is Nia for?Nia works for everybody because it works with every body; since the focus is on your own body, you can adapt Nia to any condition you might have. In a regular gym the principle is, “no pain, no gain,” right? Nia flips that on its head and says “no joy, no gain.” There must be joy in movement.

Nia honors the mind-body-spirit connection. Often when people struggle to do Nia it’s because it’s an emotional struggle first and not a physical one. How did you find Nia? What is your Nia story?I came to Nia by chance as an alternative to the gym. I ended up going at least twice a week for two years before deciding to go for the training, started teaching in Houston in 2011 and then in South Korea. Now I teach classes in Sharqiya, as well as

Jeddah and Dubai when I get the chance. My journey is ongoing as I am a brown belt teacher now and planning to go for black belt training in the summer. Tell me about your best Nia moment. As a student, I remember having a really hard morning with my child one day. I dropped him off to school that morning and went to Nia class already feeling exhausted. One of the songs we danced to had

an African tribal beat and I just poured my heart into the beat, the moment and the movement. I mean, I let it all out and I felt so much better afterwards! The Nia instructor commented after class that she couldn’t take her eyes off of me. Has Nia changed your life?As a workout, Nia has allowed me to embrace all of what my body can and can’t do, letting go of what I used to think of as its imperfections.

As a practice and lifestyle, I’m better able to connect with the sensation of ease when my body tenses up under stress. Sensing my feet and connecting to my breath helps me go through situations that usually would’ve caused stress.

But I would say the biggest gift I received from Nia is being more of who I am, being comfortable in my own skin and connecting to my own unique spirit.

Don’t Stress Out

An herbal tea a day keeps this silent killer away.By Dr. Rehan Al Taji

"Stress is not a state of mind... it's measurable and dangerous, and humans can't seem to find their off-switch." These words of warning come from renowned author and award-winning neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky in the documentary “Stress: Portrait of a Killer.”

69DESTINATIONKSA.COM

For many of us, our imbalanced lifestyle, inadequate rest, unhealthy eating habits and zero proper physical activity has placed us in the sights of many silent killers that are ready to trigger at any moment. It is imperative that we identify problems very early on and take measures to prevent them from getting worse. It is all the more important to be proactive and not let these issues occur at all.

Let’s talk about one of the most dangerous of these silent killers:

STRESS

Being able to recognize common stress symptoms can give you a jump on managing them. You may think illness is to be blamed for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or even decreased productivity at work, when really stress could be behind it all. Stress can cause many negative behaviors, including a change in eating habits, anger outbursts, smoking and social withdrawal. Left unchecked, stress contributes to many health problems, from high blood pressure and heart disease to obesity and diabetes.

In order to combat stress, what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body. While they don’t take the place of strong social support, herbs are a wonderful, natural way to help the body and mind to cope with stress. Whether your stress shows up as muscle tension, scattered thoughts, upset digestion or a racing heartbeat, there are traditional herbal remedies to soothe these reactions. Some of the following herbal teas taken after dinner can manage your stress and bring dramatic change in your life.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

This humble, apple-scented flower is traditionally taken

as a tea after dinner because it’s a nervine that supports digestion. Chamomile has

been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory—reducing “inflamed” thoughts as well as

inflammation in the body.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

This is called “the gladdening herb” for its ability to uplift and calm at the same time,

both as a tea and through its lovely scent. Traditionally, it’s

been used to decrease anxiety and ease sadness.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

This makes the sun shine a little brighter as an effective tool

for lifting depression. It’s been found useful in mild to moderate depression and traditionally was

used to relieve anxiety and lift sadness.

SPIRITUALITYH E A LT H Y L I V I N G

Streaming through the clouds overhead, beams of silver light splash like a silver ocean, accentuating the moon overhead, not only spellbinds its viewers, but also marks the advent of the sanctimonious month of Rajab.

The month of Rajab is one of the sacred months of which

Allah says:“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” [At Tawbah 9:36]

THE HOLY MONTH OF RAJABUnderstanding it and knowing why it’s special.

By Bint Ayesha

The Sacred Months

Rajab, Dhu’l-Qa’dah, Dhu’l-Hijjah and Muharram. In

these months, sins are more forbidden and bear greater

consequences. Also, the sanctity of these months is such, that we are rewarded more than other times for

fulfilling good deeds.

Page 73: DS Issue 4

71DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Innovations committed by those who exaggerate the holiness of this month are as follows: Celebrating Prophet’s Night Journey on the 27th (Isra’ and Mi’raaj). Performing Salaat Al Raghaaib. Observing Voluntary Fast specifically in this month. Visiting Graves. Singling this month for frequently performing Umrah.

The aforementioned acts are innovations; as they haven’t been properly authenticated. Without a doubt fasting and Umrah are good deeds, but bid‘ah begins when we single out a specific date, time or month for a deed, as in this case Rajab is singled out for carrying out specific deeds. If a person performs Umrah during Rajab without believing that there is any special virtue in that, then there is nothing

wrong with that. Similarly, one who offers voluntary fasts, simply out of his usual habit without singling this month or time of year is permissible.

Hence, we should take measure to gain proper knowledge and protect ourselves from falling into bid‘ah for verily Ayesha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that is not a part of it, will have it rejected.” (Related by both Imam Al Bukhari & Imam Muslim)

So, dear friends, let’s prepare ourselves for this month, let’s purify our intentions, abstain from transgression, desist from committing bid’ah, spread the message and enrich our and others’ knowledge with regards to this month.

WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR RIZQ

H E A LT H Y L I V I N GSPIRITUALITY

1. Continuous Istighfaar

Allah says, “Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving, He will send rain to you in abundance, increase you in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.” (71:10-12)

Rizq: Provision is the blessings of this world and of the Hereafter.

One should work, and take up the means to attain his rizq. As always, there are tips from the Qur’an and Sunnah to aid us in this endeavour.

2. Having Taqwa

Allah says, “Whosoever fears Allah, keeps his duty to Him, He will make for him to get out from every difficulty and will provide for him from (sources) he could never imagine.” (65:2-3)

Allah will open doors, which you never knew even existed.

6

Increasing your blessings, in this life and the next.

Page 75: DS Issue 4

73DESTINATIONKSA.COM

6. Du‘aa’ (Supplication)

The Prophet (PBUH) used to say, when he said the salaam at the end of Fajr prayer: “Allaahumma inni as’ aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘ilman naafi’an, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan (O Allah, I ask you for good provision, beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds).” (Saheeh Ibn Maajah)

5. Giving Charity

Allah says, “Whatsoever you spend of anything for Allah, he will replace it. He is the best of those who grant sustenance.” (34:39) Spend charity for Allah and be blessed in what remains and your rewards in the Hereafter will be multiplied.

3. Raise in the Ranks

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “If you were to rely on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out early in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.” (Tirmithi)

Web: aateam.org

theislamicteam

Let’s get started following these tips and

watch as the provision rains from Allah above.

Allah is Al Razzaq, The Provider, who gives to

whom He wills. Our blessings are a test and as such, we must appreciate and thank Allah whether

we have little or a lot. I ask Allah to bless you, and to open your doors for you.

4. Ties of Kinship

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “He who desires that he be granted more rizq and his life be prolonged should maintain good ties with his kinship.” (Bukhari and

Muslim) This brings the double benefit of increased sustenance as well as longer life.

Jubail raises the bar in mosque design and construction.

The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) approach mosque building with a great deal of attention to detail. They take care to maintain consistent architectural standards that meld modern design and creativity with the traditional cornerstones and designs of Islamic civilization’s rich heritage.

SACRED BEAUTY

By Sultan Al Sughair

As many as 22 large mosques have been established in Jubail Industrial City, in addition to 48 smaller ones, all of which accommodate more than 54,000 worshippers. There is already ongoing construction to build five new large ones (capable of hosting 3,000 - 4,500 people), 15 smaller mosques (capable of hosting about 300 - 650), as well as a special project for the Ghazi Algosaibi Mosque to be built in the new city center. Being constructed by SABIC, this mosque will

be a distinct architectural landmark for the city.

In a nice touch of power conservation, the large mosques have simplified and separated small sections with their own air conditioning and lighting systems in order accommodate daily prayers, which usually only attract smaller regular groups of 300 - 600 worshippers.

The Royal Commission has issued a detailed guide to building mosques to ensure

In terms of architectural design, the standards have taken into account the integration of the mosque’s design and its function to reflect the identity of the city, while the facades are distinguished by rich architectural elements inspired by Islamic architecture from throughout the ages.

It has developed mosques’ planning and engineering standards in accordance with the general plan of the city and has been holding workshops to spread awareness and understanding of these standards.

More than just basic guidelines, the new standards provide solutions for modern internal and external lighting systems, separate air

Dining with a Clear ConscienceEating and making a difference at the same time.By Tuba Saricimen

Villa Mamas Eating great food and contributing to society at the same time may seem far-fetched, but Villa Mamas is making that happen. With their numerous social responsibility initiatives in place, Villa Mamas leaves their guests with a clear conscience and a satisfied belly! Some of the incredible projects that they’ve initiated are:

• Donating leftover food to an animal shelter.• Using leftover coffee as a fertilizer in their garden.• Selling used oil to mechanics for use in their garages.• Repurposing clean placemats as notepads for the servers.• Repurposing ketchup bottles to store spices.• Using shredded paper as bedding for gift baskets.

• Donating jams to charities.

They’re currently planning to purchase a machine that composts waste products and then use that compost as fertilizer for their farm.

Villa Mamas offers an innovative twist to traditional food that leaves the taste buds content and happy. Their tahchin, a Persian rice cake delight, comes with pilaf rice, saffron-infused berries and juicy chicken.

Meanwhile, their Royal Tagine is a slow-cooked baby chicken stuffed with aromatic rice and a mixture of cranberries, cherries, mixed raisins and nuts. It truly adds the “royal” element to this classic Moroccan dish. Location: Near Saar Cineplex, Rd. No. 3374, Al Markh, Bahrain Tel: +973-17305031Email: [email protected] Web: villamamas.com

Building a Better WorldAn interview with community caretaker and peace-builder, Suhail AlgosaibiTuba Saricimen

Algosaibi is an entrepreneur, a reconciliation activist, a father, a husband and a son, but most of all, he is a man with a mission: “To make the world a better place by helping people unleash their potential. Ultimately, every human being wants to be happy, if you come down to it.”

His role as an activist started with Bahrain’s crisis in 2011. The crisis created a social

and sectarian divide, so with the generous endorsement of the Crown Prince, Algosaibi founded the Bahrain Foundation for Reconciliation and Civil Discourse (BFRCD) in 2012.

The main purpose of BFRCD is to bring people together and bridge that sectarian gap: “What we try and do is that instead of people talking about each other, we try to get them to talk to each other.”

The BFRCD has organized nearly 60 events, workshops, public lectures, community wvisits and dialog dinners.

“I learned a lot about dialog and conflict resolution in the last three years,” says Algosaibi. “It has become a big part of my life.” Expressing that this is long-term process, he hopes that the fruits of BFRCD’s efforts will be reaped by generations to come.

Algosaibi’s biggest inspiration for everything he does is his late father, Ghazi Algosaibi. “I can’t imagine any role model for someone to have that would be better than my father. When I witnessed his steadfastness, his determination and his hard work, it had a huge impact on me.”

Algosaibi would always strive to be worthy of that name he carries, “The shadow cast is huge and the burden on my shoulders is heavy, but it always drives me forward.”

Proud father of three – Salma 14, Laith 12 and Tamim 7 – he says that he and his wife’s greatest achievement is their children. “We have wonderful kids, by God’s grace,” says Algosaibi. “They’re confident, happy and capable of overcoming challenges.” He attributes showering them with unconditional love while still being disciplined with them as the two main factors in

building their characters. “As a father, if my children grow up to be well-educated adults, capable of overcoming life’s challenges; this will have been my greatest achievement.” Apart from his role as a reconciliation activist, Algosaibi has been giving back to society through his

businesses. The DreamBody Center’s Healthier and Happier initiative reinvests a portion of proceeds from new members back into society. So far, the money collected has built a playground for the Batelco Childcare Home.

Our BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) for our Healthier and Happier

Initiative is to positively influence the lives of 23 million people. It’s lofty,

but if you’re going to dream big, you should

really dream big!

Being Socially ResponsibleGiving back to the community in countless ways.By Tuba Saricimen

Feed the Need Feed the Need is an initiative that was launched by Michelle Bailey with one aim in mind, to feed those who are in need. The idea came to her when she saw a photograph of a refrigerator placed outside a house in Riyadh to feed the hungry.

In just two years, her website and 10,000-strong Facebook group has led to 20 refrigerators being placed in key locations around Bahrain. The refrigerators offer free food to those in need thanks to generous volunteers that regularly donate items such as long-life milk, eggs, cooking oil and bags of rice.

Arab Youth Climate Movement With the effect of climate change as a major issue worldwide and an urgent one regionally, the Arab Youth Climate Movement (AYCM) was established in 2012 in the MENA region followed by the establishment of its Bahrain chapter.

The main purpose of the AYCM is to raise awareness on climate change and to educate people on what they could do in order to lead sustainable lives, thereby making the world a better and cleaner place.

Since their establishment, the AYCM has conducted awareness lectures, launched a citizen science program that encourages people to make observations of different species within their ecosystem and directed Bahrain Fort’s management to account for climate change in order to better preserve the fort.
