Spanking and Corporal Punishment SOWK 300 Computer Applications in the Social Sciences Spring 2011 LaShauna M.Crayton TTH-02 Introduction Corporal Punishment is the intentional infliction of pain on the body for the purposes of punishment. Corporal punishment includes spanking, slapping, punching, hitting with objects, pinching, and forcing to stand for long periods of times. I created a survey to assess the beliefs of students on the campus of Tuskegee University about corporal punishment. This project required me to gather 100 responds from the students on campus. Hypothesis I expect that it would be more f emales than male that will participate in my survey. There will be more of the freshman's respondents that will disagree about spanking their children. My opinion is that if an individuals received corporal punishment, as a child will not spank their children. The gender is also a big factor whether or not a person will inflict corporal punishment on their children. This a multivariate chart that shows the responds from both male and female on the same issue (Should parents be allow to use corporal punishment). The females under 21 feel that parents should be able to discipline their child while the responses of the male response are very low. The male that are between the ages of 21-24 feel that it should be allowed while it¶s the opposite here with the females. There was also a high percentage in the females¶ respondents both, under 21 and between the ages of 21-24 that believes parents shouldn¶t be allowed to discipline their children with corporal punishment. Multivariate Graph 1 1. Tuskegee University Students¶ Survey 2011 of Views about Spanking and Corporal Punishment References This image shows the age of the respondents and how they feel about children being spank as a means of discipline. The maturity level of the respondents has an impact on the answers; the respondents 21 and under feel that it¶s not okay to spank your child, while the older respondents (21-24) feels that it¶s okay to spank your child. It¶s because the younger respondents mind frame is different, I feel that most of the respondents still feel that are the age where they could get punish by their parents and they feel that it¶s not right. On the other hand, the respondents may feel that way later in life. When you are punish by your parents, it helps you further in life. Bivariate Graph 1 Figure_1a. Classification of the respondents. Figure_1b Should parents be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline their children This survey actually helps me learn about other people family lifestyles and what they believe in. Although each survey is confidentiality and each respondent are unknown, I have a better understanding of how individuals are raised. I also learned that some people weren¶t punishing physically also stayed out of trouble with the police. I predicted that the people who wasn¶t punish would more than likely have trouble with the police. There were also a higher percentage of respondents that were under 21 agreed to spanking should be allowed .
