GeneralDescriptionThe 11.2 K-factor, Series ELO-231,Standard Response, Standard Cover-

age, Upright and Pendent Sprinklers(Ref. Figure 1) are automatic sprin-klers of the fusible solder type. Theyare standard response - spray sprin-klers that produce a hemisphericalwater distribution pattern below thedeflector.

The 11.2 K-factor, ELO-231 Sprinklerswere subjected to full scale, high-piledstorage, fire tests to qualify their use inlieu of 5.6 or 8.0 K-factor standardspray sprinklers for the protection ofhigh-piled storage.

Higher flow rates can be achieved atmuch lower pressures with the 11.2

K-factor, ELO-231 Sprinklers mak-ing their use highly advantageous inhigh density applications, such as theprotection of high-piled storage.

Wax or lead coatings can be used toextend the life of the copper alloy com-ponents used in Series ELO-231sprin-klers beyond that which would other-wise be obtained when exposed tocorrosive atmospheres. Although waxand lead coated sprinklers havepassed the standard corrosion tests ofthe applicable approval agencies, thetesting is not representative of all pos-

sible corrosive atmospheres. Conse-quently, it is recommended that theend user be consulted with respect tothe suitability of these corrosion resis-tant coatings for any given corrosiveenvironment. The effects of ambienttemperature, concentration of chemi-

cals, and gas/chemical veloci ty,should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of thechemical to which the sprinklers will beexposed.

An upright intermediate level versionof the Series ELO-231 Sprinklers forin-rack applications can be obtainedby utilizing the Series ELO-231 Up-right Sprinkler with the WSG-2 Guard& Shield, and a pendent intermediatelevel version of the Series ELO-231Sprinklers can be obtained by utiliz-ing the Series ELO-231 PendentSprinkler with the WS-2 Shield. If thereis a possibility of the pendent interme-diate level version being exposed tomechanical damage, a G-2 Guard canbe added.

WARNINGSThe 11.2 K-factor, Series ELO-231Upright and Pendent Sprinklers de-scribed herein must be installed andmaintained in compliance with thisdocument, as well as with the applica-ble standards of the National Fire Pro-tection Association, in addition to thestandards of any other authorities hav-ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so mayimpair the performance of these de-vices.

The owner is responsible for maintain-ing their fire protection system and de-vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or manufac-turer should be contacted with anyquestions.

Installation of Series ELO-231 Pen-dent Sprinklers in recessed escutch-eons will void all sprinkler warranties,as well as possibly void the sprinklersApprovals and/or Listings.

OperationA fusible alloy is sealed into a bronzeactuating rod (center strut) by a stain-less steel ball. When the alloy melts atits rated temperature, the ball is forcedupward into the center strut, releasingthe two ejectors and operating thesprinkler.

InstallationThe Series ELO-231 Sprinklers mustbe installed in accordance with the fol-lowing instructions:

NOTESA leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 10to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maxi-mum of 30 ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque

is to be used to install sprinklers with3/4 NPT connections. A leak tight 1/2inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob-tained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs.(9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maximum of 21 ft.lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque may be usedto install sprinklers with 1/2 NPT con-nections. Higher levels of torque maydistort the sprinkler inlet and causeleakage or impairment of the sprinkler.

Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi-cient adjustment in the escutcheonplate by under- or over-tightening thesprinkler. Readjust the position of thesprinkler fitting to suit.

The Series ELO-231 Upright andPendent Sprinklers must be installedin accordance with the following in-structions.

Step 1. Pendent sprinklers are to beinstalled in the pendent position, andupright sprinklers are to be installed inthe upright position.

Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type

3 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2),except that an 8 or 10 inch adjustableCrescent wrench is to be used for waxcoated sprinklers. With reference toFigure 1, the W-Type 3 SprinklerWrench or the adjustable Crescentwrench, as applicable is to be appliedto the wrench flats.

When installing wax coated sprinklerswith the adjustable Crescent wrench, additional care needs to be exercisedto prevent damage to the wax coatingon the sprinkler wrench flats or framearms and, consequently, exposure ofbare metal to the corrosive environ-ment. The jaws of the wrench shouldbe opened sufficiently wide to passover the wrench flats without damag-ing the wax coating. Before wrenchtightening the sprinkler, the jaws of thewrench are to be adjusted to just con-tact the sprinkler wrench flats. Afterwrench tightening thesprinkler, loosen

the wrench jaws before removing thewrench.

After installation, the sprinkler wrenchflats and frame arms must be in-spected and the wax coat ing re-touched (repaired) whenever the coat-ing has been damaged and bare metal

is exposed. The wax coating on thewrench flats can be retouched by gen-tly applying a heated 1/8 inch diametersteel rod to the areas of wax that havebeen damaged, to smooth it back overareas where bare metal is exposed.

NOTESOnly retouching of the wax coating ap-plied to the wrench flats and framearms is permitted, and the retouchingis to be performed only at the time ofthe initial sprinkler installation.

The steel rod should be heated only tothe point at which it can begin to meltthe wax, and appropriate precautions

need to be taken, when handling theheated rod, in order to prevent theinstaller from being burned.

If attempts to retouch the wax coatingwith complete coverage are unsuc-cessful, additional wax can be orderedin the form of a wax stick (the end ofwhich is color coded). Only the correctcolor coded wax is to be used, andretouching of wrench flats and framearms is only permitted at the time ofinitial sprinkler installation. With thesteel rod heated as previously de-scribed, touch the rod to the area re-quiring additional wax with the rod an-

gled downward, and then touch thewax stick to the rod approximatelyone-half inch away from the area re-quiring retouching. The wax will meltand run down onto the sprinkler.

Care andMaintenanceSeries ELO-231 Sprinklers must bemaintained and serviced in accord-ance with the following instructions:

NOTESBefore closing a fire protection systemcontrol valve for maintenance work onthe fire protection system that it con-trols, permission to shut down the af-fected fire protection system must beobtained from the proper authoritiesand all personnel who may be affectedby this action must be notified.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

Automatic sprinklers must never be bepainted, plated, coated or otherwise

altered after leaving the factory. Modi-fied or over-heated sprinklers must bereplaced.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-placed.

Frequent visual inspections are rec-ommended to be initially performed forcorrosion resistant sprinklers, after theinstallation has been completed, toverify the long term potential integrityof the sprinkler coatings. Thereafter,

annual inspect ions per NFPA 25should suffice; however, instead of in-specting from the floor level, a randomsampling of close-up visual inspec-tions should be made, so as to betterdetermine the exact sprinkler condi-tion and the long term integrity of thecorrosion resistant coating, as it maybe affected by the corrosive conditionspresent.

The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. The in-stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relativeto any questions.

It is recommended that automaticsprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualifiedInspection Service in accordance withlocal requirements and/or nationalcode.
