Prasoon Joshi.Excerpts:Lets talk about your childhood?I was born and brought up inChandni Chowk, Delhi, a micro-cosm of India with everythingfrom chaat to McDonalds to tem-ples to masjids to the Red Fort. Asyou enter, you have the GauriShankar temple on your left, diag-onally opposite is the MethodistChurch next to which isMcDonalds, little ahead is thegurudwara, opposite to which isHaldiram. Moving ahead is

Fatehpuri Mosque and you turnaround and you see the Red Fort.The Hindus and Muslims are sep-arated by clear mohallas and youhave to pass one mohalla to go tothe other. So whenever there wastalk of any communal unrest, wewould just shut the phatak of ourmohalla to feel safe. I grew upwatching the ramleela and play-ing cricket at Jama Masjid.Delhi-6captured a part of this. My dadused to love movies, so much sothat he once left everything tocome to Mumbai to join movies.He was a part of the hotel indus-try and worked with HotelClaridges all his life, and grew upthrough the ranks to become thegeneral manager.We stayed at thehotel in the staff quarters. Thosedays movies of Raj Kapoor andGuru Dutt used to celebrate silver

jubilees and 100 days at the hoteland I would sometimes, sneak into see the stars. My dad made

friends with Om Prakash, theactor,who would come home latefor dinner and do sher shairi withmy dad. That was my touch andbrush with movies. I studied atAir Force Bal Bharti School,where I became a keen sports-man. I swam a lot and dabbled incricket. There was an MIG planeat the foyer and I always dreamt ofbecoming a fighter pilot. Thatbecame an inspiration forRang De Basanti.
