A service is any kind of work [(that) someone does to satisfy our needs or wants]. 서비스란 [누군가 우리의 필요나 욕구를 만족시켜 주기 위해 하는] 모든 종류의 일입니다. The ice cream is an example of goods. 아이스크림은 상품의 한 예입니다.

Goods are things [that satisfy our needs or wants]. 상품은 [우리의 필요나 욕구를 충족시켜주는] 것(물건/사물)들이지요. Look at the pictures below. 아래 그림들을 보세요. Which ones show goods and which ones show services? 어느 것이 상품을 나타내고 어느 것이 서비스를 나타낼까요?

I asked Kate for my favorite kind of ice cream: cookies and cream. 저는 Kate에게 제가 제일 좋아하는 아이스크림인 쿠키앤크림을 요청했어요. “I’m sorry, David, we’re all out of it,” she said. “미안해, David, 그건 다 떨어졌어,” 하고 그녀가 말했습니다. So I chose chocolate ice cream. 그래서 전 초콜릿 아이스크림을 골랐죠.

There was a scarcity of cones at Tom’s. Tom의 가게에는 콘이 부족했습니다. Scarcity means that resources are not enough [to satisfy our needs or wants]. 부족이란 자원이 우리의 필요나 욕구를 충족시킬 수 있을 만큼 충분하지 않다는 뜻입니다. Therefore, we must make choices. 따라서 우리는 선택을 해야 합니다.

Look at the pictures. 그림을 보세요. Which picture shows a scarcity? 어느 그림이 부족을 보여주나요? I finished my ice cream and then I said goodbye to Kate. 저는 아이스크림을 다 먹고 Kate에게 작별 인사를 했습니다.

In the street I met Brian and his sister, Anne. 거리에서 저는 Brian과 그의 누나 Anne을 만났습니다. I asked, “What’s up?” 저는 “무슨 일이니?”하고 물었습니다. Brian answered, “We are going to Sports Plaza.” Brian이 “우리는 스포츠 쇼핑센터에 가는 중이야.”하고 대답했습니다.

“My sister wants to buy either in-line skates or a bike. “누나는 인라인 스케이트나 자전거를 사고 싶어 해. And I want to buy either a basketball or a baseball cap.” 그리고 나는 농구공이나 야구 모자를 사고 싶어.”

I said, “Why don’t you buy both?” 제가 말했어요. “둘 다 사지 그러니?” Brian answered, “We don’t have enough money.” Brian이 대답했습니다. “우리는 돈이 충분하지 않거든.”

I went to Sports Plaza with Brian and Anne. 저는 Brian과 Anne과 함께 스포츠 쇼핑센터에 갔어요. Brian had $50 [to spend at the store]. Brian은 [가게에서 쓸] 돈이 50달러 있었습니다. The baseball cap cost $30 and the basketball cost $60. 야구모자는 30달러였고 농구공은 60달러였어요.

So he had to buy the baseball cap. 그래서 그는 야구모자를 사야 했어요. Anne had enough money for either the in-line skates or the bike. Anne은 인라인 스케이트나 자전거 중 하나를 사기에 충분한 돈이 있었어요. She had to decide whether she would buy the in-line skates or the bike. 그녀는 인라인 스케이트를 살 지 자전거를 살 지 결정해야 했습니다.

Finally, she chose the bike because she wanted to ride it with her friends after school. 마침내 그녀는 자전거를 택했습니다. 방과후에 친구들과 함께 자전거를 타고 싶었기 때문이지요.

Opportunity cost occurs when we choose one good, service, or action over another. 기회비용은 우리가 하나의 상품이나, 서비스, 활동을 다른 것 대신에 선택할 때 발생합니다. The next-best choice [we give up] is the opportunity cost. [우리가 포기하는] 차선의 선택이 기회비용이지요.

The in-line skates are Anne’s opportunity cost of choosing the bike, and the basketball is Brian’s opportunity cost of choosing the baseball cap. 인라인 스케이트는 자전거를 선택한 것에 대한 Anne의 기회 비용이고, 농구공은 야구모자를 선택한 것에 대한 Brian의 기회 비용입니다.
