LEPHALALE - Laboratory reports from two independent water tests, taken at different spots along the Zandsloot streambed over a period of two weeks, confirms contamination of the water through effluent running from the Zongesien sewage plant in Marapong.

This follows on-going fish deaths reported by landowners who live along this perennial stream just outside Lephalale. The Zandsloot runs through various farms for about 7km into the Mogol River, an agricultural lifeline in the area.

Water samples taken by Northern News on 5 September and tested by NHLS (National Health Laboratory Services) in Johannesburg reports an “innumerable” Agar Plate Count in both samples. This count should be less than 100 cfu/ml. The Total Coliform Count is more than 2419 per 100ml in both samples and the E.coli Type 1 count which should be zero cfu/100ml, is 96 per 100ml in one sample and 2419 per 100ml in the other.

The second set of water samples were taken a week later and tested by Clean Stream Scientific Services in Pretoria. Their report indicates that the Total ammonium, the orthophosphate, total coliforms, COD and E.coli, all exceed the Department of Water Affairs’ (DWA) target water quality guideline. This report concludes that the water quality is poor.

The DWA collected its own water samples on 16 September, but at the time of going to print, these results were not available yet. Northern News' first report on this matter was two weeks ago prior to the water test results.

Lephalale municipal manager, Bob Naidoo and April Shiko, acting manager for infrastructure services met with Northern News last week. Naidoo confirmed that the sewage systems in Lephalale are under great pressure and that Medupi’s sewage is also offloaded at Zongesien. He produced a written report from the Municipality’s Environmental Health department, which advocated the opinion that the high chemical composition of the Medupi sewage was probably the cause of fish deaths. Naidoo confirmed that no scientific tests has been done to support this opinion. “The municipality is ultimately responsible for the sewage infrastructure, but let me explain to you that we are working according to a plan,” said Naidoo. He added that the short-term plan was to channel the sewage into the Zandsloot. The medium-term plan is a R13 million sludge plant which is being built in

such a way that it will eventually form part of a bigger and better sewage plant, like the one proposed by ResGen.

Northern News approached ResGen to ask about its proposed R160-million sewage plant. MD, Paul Jury, responded as follows: “Resgen South Africa (Pty) Ltd acting on behalf of Ledjadja Coal (Pty) Ltd, submitted a proposal to develop and construct a sewage treatment plant in the town of Lephalale in October 2010, in response to a tender advertised by the Lephalale Local Municipality in The City Press on 19 September 2010. The company was awarded the tender on 30 March 2011. The project has not commenced and Ledjadja cannot begin working on the site until the signed contract from the Lephalale Municipality is received. One of the first actions on receipt of the signed contract will be to clear the polluted area.”

In exchange for treated water for its Boikarabelo Mine, ResGen is planning to finance, build, licence, run and maintain an activated sewage treatment plant and sludge disposal facility. It will carry the costs of electricity used for pumping the water from the plant. ResGen will pay a nominal rate for lease of the land on which the pump station facilities are situated as well as the operating and maintenance costs. It expects to be operating in the area for at least 30 years and wish to have a positive impact on uplifting the local community. The sewage plant will provide a much needed service to the area and remove the risk of contaminated water.

In the meantime fish, plant and animal life are under threat from the putrid water.

Naidoo said that some of the faulty electricity at Zongesien had been repaired during the week so that the inflowing pump at least, is now working. Shiko added that they were also planning to add chlorine to the effluent.

“When it comes to infrastructure, we are ten years behind,” concluded Naidoo. He said that despite what the public thinks, the Municipality did not and still does not have the necessary funds to cover the costs of infrastructure required because of the rapid growth in the area.

ANC votes to sack MMMOKOPANE - In-fighting in the Mogalakwena ANC corps came to a head during a council meeting last Friday when councillors brought a surprise motion to end municipal manager, William Kekana’s contract, and replace him with the controversial head of corporate support services, M.H. Thobejane.

Thobejane earlier this year made headlines when newly-elected ANC councillors voted for his reinstatement after he was suspended in November last year. Thobejane’s suspension followed guilty verdicts by a disciplinary committee on 26 different charges ranging from fraud and theft to dishonesty and misbehaviour. Criminal charges have been brought against Thobejane and he was recently arrested and appeared in court on some of these charges.

The ANC councillors ignored these allegations and four refusals by the Labour Court to have Thobejane’s initial suspension overturned and reinstated him in his position, now they are rooting for him to be the new municipal manager.

Die burgerregtegroep, AfriForum, wat die saak aanhandig gemaak het is verheug oor die uitspraak. “Dit stuur ‘n duidelike boodskap aan die ANC Jeugliga se Julius Malema - dat hy nie verhewe bo die reg is nie en dat hy nie kan maak soos hy wil

“Gesprekke oor die kwessie van erfenis moet aangemoedig word sodat Suid-Afrikaners ’n gemeenskaplike erfenis kan vind.

“’n Land sonder geskiedenis of erfenis is soos ’n boom sonder wortels,” het Mantashe gesê.

In reaksie hierop het Kriel in ‘n verklaring gesê dat dit onwys is dat die ANC wil voortgaan om te veg vir die reg om Afrikaners te verontmenslik deur hulle honde te noem en geweld teen hulle te kan aanhits, ten spyte van ‘n goed deurdagte hofuitspraak wat die gevare en onwettigheid hiervan duidelik uiteensit. “Terwyl die jeugliga steeds probeer aanvoer dat Malema se opruiende uitsprake nie letterlik bedoel word nie, word mense tans steeds letterlik vermoor,” het Kriel gesê. At the meeting opposition parties insisted on a secret vote and while that did show far more support for Kekana to remain in his position, it was still not enough. In the end 34 councillors voted for Kekana’s contract to be suspended and only 19 against it. Thirteen of those who voted to keep Kekana had to be ANC councillors as there are only six opposition councillors in the Mogalakwena municipality. The DA put forward a motion that dossiers containing all evidence and allegations against both Kekana and Thobejane be handed to the special investigative unit, the Hawks, and the Public Protector for investigation. The executive committee was instructed to do this and also to report the sudden change in municipal leadership to Waterberg MEC for local government and housing, Soviet Lekganyane.

LEPHALALE - Detailed designs for a 40MW power station at Steenbokpan in the Lephalale region are being finalised and its funding has been included in the planned Boikarabelo mine’s capital estimate, energy company Resource Generation (ResGen) announced this week.

It is estimated that the power station alone will cost $100 million, which makes the capital expenditure for construction of stage one of the mine an estimated $750 million. According to ResGen’s MD Paul Jury, this estimate is higher than originally thought due to inclusion of the power station and increased construction costs, particularly for the coal handling and washing facilities.

The company is considering the possibility of segregating debt funding for the power station from the project facility for the mine. Project funding is conditional on a rail haulage contract with Transnet Freight Rail (TFR). To date, TFR’s task team negotiating with Resource Generation has declined to commit to a contract and the company

Ons het agtergekom dat veral boere bekommerd is dat hulle na die sensusopname vervolg sal word oor ongedokumenteerde buitelanders wat op hulle grond woon. Dit is egter nie waaroor die sensus-opname gaan nie, dit is wel vir ons belangrik om

has elevated the matter to Transnet’s group chief executive who in the past has indicated his support for the Boikarabelo project and for a rail haulage contract.

“The reluctance of TFR’s task team to commit to a rail haulage contract will delay the mine’s initial production until the first half of 2014, assuming an acceptable contract is agreed by the end of 2011 and funding is obtained. We are confident of achieving a contract with TFR eventually and believe the delay is related to process and timing, rather than inability to provide haulage,” Jury said.

Meanwhile, progress has been made in obtaining the two remaining major license

approvals. The first, under the National Environment Management Act (NEMA), will enable construction of the mine and the rail link to begin and, as soon as this is received, pre-construction works will commence on site. The second is the Integrated Water Use License from the Department of Water Affairs, enabling the use of water from the bore field on the company’s properties, which will provide sufficient water for stage 1 of the mine’s operations. Both license approvals are expected

during the final quarter of 2011.

ResGen vs MedupiThe proposed new power plant will be substantially smaller than the Medupi power station project. When completed, Medupi will have six boilers each powering an 800MW turbine, producing 4 800MW of power. This will be the largest dry-cooled coal power station in the world. Medupi will be supplied by coal from Exxaro’s Grootegeluk coal mine, which will supply 14.6Mt coal per year for 40 years. The first 800 MW unit is expected to be commissioned in early 2012, with the next units following at nine-month intervals.

management of Exxaro at Manketti Lodge. According to Derksen, Exxaro raised issues about the capacity, quality, pricing and service pertaining to local businesses.

“These issues can be worked on and rectified with more communication and the birth of a healthy working relationship. Future projects will be communicated to the Forum so that enough time and planning can be devoted to involve local business,” Derksen told Northern News this week.

On Friday evening the Lephalale Builders Forum held a function at Molalatau. Representatives from Eskom, Exxaro, GMEP and the local municipality had the opportunity to meet local business owners. According to Derksen the event was a great success and the forum is already planning their next function.

LEPHALALE - Businesses in Lephalale had several opportunities last week to network with mega-industry role players. Last Wednesday, the Eskom Suppliers Forum gave local businesses the opportunity to engage with the power utility. The youth desk of the municipality raised several issues, one of them the lack of tenders for youth-owned companies.

According to Wayne Derksen, chairman of the Lephalale Builder’s Forum, almost all the questions boiled down to the fact the local industry feel left out of the development in the Lephalale region. Questions were raised about why locals weren’t getting jobs.

At the event, Eskom once again committed itself to involve local businesses and local labour as part of their expansion project.

What is the glory of God? Why was it so important for Moses to see God’s glory before he led the Israelites into the desert when he asked “Now show me your glory”(Exodus 33:18).

The truth is, Moses wanted to know who this God is that was leading him on this journey, more than that he wanted to know that God would be with him.

In answer to Moses’ request God showed him His goodness, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you.”

Wat dinge dan meer verdag maak is dat dieselfde raadslede ‘n bestuurder wil aanstel wat vroër geskors is nadat hy op etlike aanklagte van korrupsie, diefstal en oneerlikheid skuldig bevind en geskors is. ‘n Man wat reeds twee maal die laaste maand in die hof verskyn het nadat hy in hegtenis geneem is hieroor.

So presies hoe belangrik ‘n munisipale bestuurder met ‘n ‘skoon’ rekord vir hierdie groep raadslede is weet nugter. Een ding is seker, as hierdie spul raadslede nie vinnig uit Waterberg, Provinsie of Nasionale kringe in die bek geruk word nie, gaan Mokopane en sy mense die groot verloorders wees. Met hul spandabelrigheid die afgelope paar maande, het hierdie groepie raadslede reeds gewys hul prioriteite lê nie by hul kiesers nie. - Jasper Raats, Redakteur

Moses saw part of God’s glory in the realisation that God is good and that he bestows mercy on us, but the full extent of His glory would only be seen in Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah.

Just before Jesus was arrested he prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that you Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

"Now this is eternal life: that they many know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father glorify me in your presence with

the glory I had with you before the world began" (John 17:1-5).

What Moses could not see (because he literally would have died), we now carry in our hearts. The knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ...

Christ embodies God’s glory where He now sits at the right hand of God and where He reigns over all authority powers and lords. At the same time, He lives in us through His Spirit and His glory is reflected when we become more like Him... compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

God’s glory is manifested today by His children loving one another as Christ loves them.

LEPHALALE – A visit to the Grootegeluk mine is exiting at the best of times, even more so if your tour guide is the GM of the Grootegeluk, Medupi expansion project, Joe Meyer. Northern News journalist, Valerie Cilliers, had the opportunity to view expansions at the mine and found some surprising facts about the mines expansion project commitment to the environment.

“You are doing a great job and your work area looks very neat, well done, keep it up,” Meyer tells a guard who lifts the beam for us to enter a restricted zone. His Land cruiser navigates the terrain with ease and it is clear that he knows this open pit mine like the palm of his hand.

Joe Meyer has been in the mining industry since 1979. As a Civil engineer, Project manager and former General Manager at Grootegeluk , his knowledge of the industry is evident, but it is his passion for the environment that might surprise most.

As General Manager, Meyer is tasked with leading the Grootegeluk Medupi Expansion Project and is working towards coal delivery to Eskom’s Medupi power station by May 2012. At completion the mine will deliver 14.6 million tons of coal a year to the power Station now under construction.

As we inspect the construction area of semi-mobile tippers and crushers in the pit, Meyer points out that the new conveyors that will transport coal to the bunkers and plant will dramatically lower the cost per ton for mining operations. “What you are seeing here and what people don’t realise is that this mine is one of SA’s biggest success stories. There was a lot of skepticism when the mine was opened 30 years ago. We took up the challenge and today this is one of the most cost effective operating mines in the world,” Meyer says with pride.

It is when we enter the mine property adjacent to the mine that I discover a world that I never knew existed. I know of very few mines that are concerned with feeding Kudus or the conservation of Tamboti trees. Meyer explains that there are more than 3800 wild animals on this eco managed area. These include Sable antelope, cheetahs, giraffes, zebra and a whole range of exclusive buck species.

“Grootegeluk is situated on six farms of which only a certain portion is used to mine and house plant facilities. The rest is used as an eco managed area and total 16 000ha. Our aim is to balance mega industry with a healthy eco-system. We are excited that a recent study has shown that there is no significant impact on the environment due to any mining activity at Grootegeluk. The study entails frequent measurements pertaining to different environmental criteria on 10 km to 100 km radius around the mine. This is done to establish a proper base case to measure the mines performance as well as its impact. Results have shown that we don’t have a significant impact on our environment compared to the base case model, “Meyer explains.

When we pass a beautiful kudu along the way, Meyer stops the vehicle. “It is all about respecting nature and doing our bit to reduce the mine’s impact on it. When the coal has been mined and we shut down this mine we want to see this site restored to have a sustainable use for the future generations. Not only will we backfill the mine quite soon to natural ground level, but we also will start to replant 200 trees when the construction site is complete. We removed a lot of trees to do the construction. The first trees will be planted during September this year.”

With a piece of coal as a memento of a day at the mine in my bag and having seen nature conservation at work, I leave with a better understanding of how mining in South Africa aims to effectively adapt its practices to minimise its impact on the environment and to continue a legacy of sustainability between mega industry and the environment.

LEPHALALE – Ten spyte van "logistieke rompslomp” deur die Departement van Onderwys, sê die nuut-aangestelde hoof van Lephalale Hoërskool, Jasper Louw, is hy baie opgewonde oor die uitdaging wat aan hom gestel is.

Volgens die Departement van Onderwys sal 'n ene M.P Maboga as hoof waarneem vir die skool wat nou reeds registrasies aanvaar vir Graad 1 -7 leerders vir Januarie 2012.

On Thursday night, Matimba Power station hosted an awards ceremony at the Mogol Club. Employees and management attended with acting power station manager, Gersh Bonga, welcoming guests and addressing the agenda of the night. He spoke proudly of Matimba and mentioned that the power station received an environmental trophy for best-performing-power-station for the past four years.

“We train our employees well so that they are able to keep up with the quality of work we have been delivering thus far. Eskom has a plan; we aim to be among the top five power utilities in the world. We have also been recognised as one of the lowest-cost producers for the past three years,” added Bonga.

Bongi Ndodana, an employee at Matimba gave praise to other employees, "You are the pillars, you are the brave warriors. You soldier on with an unsurpassed sustained will. You grow bigger than the Elephant,” said Ndodana.

Awards presented in the first category were group awards, presented by Wikus J.Van Rensburg (engineering manager). The awards were for excellence, innovation and sustainability. This was followed by customer satisfaction, integrity and occupational health and safety awards, presented by Rhulani Mathebula (maintenance manager). Gugu Gcaba (HR manager) presented the I-Volunteer, Sinobuntu, Zero-harm, Resilience awards.

Elvis Blue, 2010 Idols winner from Cape Town, entertained guests and left some guests emotional after his performance. He created an excellent build-up to the Special Awards which were presented by Vusi Mboweni.

The Makhado Rope Skipping Club that caters for young people around the Makhado Municipality needs help to be able to participate in the national championships in Cape Town next month.

The group won the provincial competition in Polokwane last Saturday.

LEPHALALE - At the recent Limpopo Athletics meeting held at Neos School Thabazimbi, Kings College Lephalale excelled with a total of 43 gold, 27 silver and 20 bronze medals were won, and that from a school with a total learner count of 35 primary school learners.

Ten learners will now compete for the Limpopo Christian Schools Sports Association at the South African Christian Schools Sports Athletics meeting held at Kings Park in Durban on 25 and 26 September. As a reward for their hard work, they will spend a week of fun at the coast before the meeting.

Op 10 September het die Mogol Hokkie Toerspanne weer saam geoefen. Agt en twintig van die 32 spelers was teenwoordig tydens die vier-ure oefening by TUT (Tswane University of Technology) in Pretoria. Spelers wat nie die oefening kon bywoon nie, was besig met rekord eksamen. Die Hokkie Toergroep van 40 mense vertrek op 1 Oktober na Nederland.

The English Public Speaking Inter High Competition was held 17 September at Ellisras High. Never before has there been an English Inter High in this region. Four schools took part: High Schools Piet Potgieter, Ben Viljoen, Warmbad and Ellisras (EHS). EHS’s Nandri de Beer came first in he junior section and Estefan Pieterse finished in second place. These learners won the junior team section as well. EHS’s Franciska de Beer won the senior section. Nazmeera Badronin of Piet Potgieter came second and Tshepiso Somo also of Piet Potgieter came third. EHS came first with a total of 1 031, Ben Viljoen was second with a total of 975 and Piet Potgieter came third with a total of 973. Warmbad achieved a total of 866.
