HEALING AND SALVATION The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salvation are necessary.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Christian liturgy has always contained an opportunity to make a choice for sharing. From the beginning, Christians pooled their resources, especially for the care of widows and orphans, at the weekly Eucharist. Over the years, the collec-tion became detached from the liturgy and baskets or plates would be passed through the community while the Mass was going on at the altar, or contributions would be collected at the doors. In Milan’s Ambrosian Rite, these gifts have al-ways been brought to the altar by lay people in procession. In German countries, the ancient custom was for the entire assembly to process with their gifts—first the men, then the women, then the priests and deacons—to offer their gifts at the altar. The old ceremony of canonization included a curious vestige of this procession: people would present the pope with two loaves of bread, two barrels of wine and water, five candles, and three cages containing pigeons or turtledoves!

Un avance de las actividades evangelizadoras para el Adviento y preparación a la Navidad:

Antes de avanzar hacia el Adviento quisiera compartir con ustedes una acción evangelizadora y catequética que nuestros Jóvenes están preparando desde hace más de un mes para el día de Halloween. Pensando como aprovechar ese día para no que se convierta en una celebración sólo folclórica, cultural y mercantil, ya el año pasado se llevó a cabo una nueva manera de situarnos en dicho día: ¿Porqué no aprovechar para comunicar un contenido de nuestra fe, para invitar a jóvenes y adultos ese día para presentarles, en el lenguaje conocido de ese día la realidad de la fiesta cris-tiana celebrada el 1 de noviembre y 2 de noviembre? Con la fiesta de todos los santos celebramos todos un día dedicado a reflexionar sobre nuestra llamada común a la santidad y orar por los difuntos. Pero la santidad no es una tarea fácil, hay que lidiar una lucha espiritual que lleve al vencimiento del pecado y la muerte, Don de Dios y tarea nuestra de respuesta. Por ello presentaremos las tentaciones que se nos presentan en el camino, los pecados capitales. Vencer la tentación desde el seguimiento de Jesús es la única tarea útil capaz de sacarnos del mundo de muerte, miedo, horror y condenación. Una meditación clásica de nuestra tradición católica expresada en el lenguaje del horror y la muerte. Ven a experimentar con nosotros e invita a personas que quizás nunca vienen a la Iglesia. Esa noche se llevarán un mensaje de salvación.

Estamos preparando la Novena a la Virgen de Guadalupe, así como la celebración de las posadas navideñas. Este año las posadas no se harán en la Iglesia, sino que iremos recorriendo los varios barrios de nuestra parroquia. En esta acción también intentamos salir de nuestra Iglesia para ir al encuentro de aquellos que no vienen a ella. Si tienen una casa para ofrecer posada en esos días no dejes de comunicarlo, y sobre todo de invitar a tus vecinos a participar. Informaremos sobre el itinerario de cada día. Presta atención al boletín. Gracias y bendiciones para todos.

An advance of the evangelizing activities for Advent and preparation for Christmas: Before moving on to Advent I would like to share with you an evangelizing and catechetical action that our Youth are preparing for more than a month for Halloween. Thinking how to take advantage of that day so that it does not become a celebration only folk, cultural and commercial, and last year a new way of placing ourselves on that day was carried out: Why not take advantage to communicate a content of our faith, to invite young people and adults that day to present to you, in the familiar language of that day the reality of the Christian holiday celebrated on November 1 and November 2? With the feast of all saints we all celebrate a day dedicated to reflect on our common call to holiness and pray for the dead. But holiness is not an easy task, we must deal with a spiritual struggle that leads to the conquest of sin and death, the Gift of God and our task of response. That is why we will present the temptations that are present-ed to us along the way, capital sins. Overcoming temptation from following Jesus is the only useful task capable of get-ting us out of the world of death, fear, horror and condemnation. A classical meditation of our Catholic tradition ex-pressed in the language of horror and death. Come and experiment with us and invite people who may never come to the Church. That night they will carry a message of salvation. We are preparing the Novena to the Virgin of Guadalupe, as well as the celebration of Christmas inns. This year the inns will not be made in the Church, but we will go through the various neighborhoods of our parish. In this action we also try to leave our Church to meet those who do not come to it. If you have a house to offer an inn on those days, do not forget to communicate it, and above all to invite your neighbors to participate. We will inform about the itinerary of each day. SANACIÓN Y SALVACIÓN Las lecturas de hoy hablan de sanación y salvación. En el segundo libro de los Reyes, Naamán, un comandante del ejército del rey de Siria, se enferma de lepra. Él va con un extranjero, un profeta de Israel cuando nadie más puede curar su enfermedad. Para su sorpresa, después de un simple baño en el río, él sanó. En el Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús sana a diez leprosos y los envía con el sacerdote. Solo uno, un samaritano, regresa a agradecerle a Jesús por haberlo sanado y él solo escucha las palabras: “tu fe te ha salvado”. El Salmo y Timoteo nos recuerda que la salvación involucra la justi-cia, la bondad y la fidelidad y nos vincula para siempre con Jesús. En un mundo roto como el nuestro, ambas sanaciones y salvacion son necesarias.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Muy popular entre los latinos es la monjita francesa santa Teresita, con sus rosas y crucifijo en mano. No cabe duda que ella fue una gran mujer, pero no podemos olvidar otra monja carmelita, la Teresota, o sea santa Teresa de Jesús (de Ávila). En 1970, esta hispana fue la primera mujer nombrada Doctora de la Iglesia gracias a sus profundos escritos. Teresa vivió en el siglo XVI, una época de mucha reforma. Después de haber pasado varios años como religiosa, se dio cuenta que su vida personal necesitaba conversión. Así fue que se puso a orar y practicar el recogimiento del alma. Ella confiesa que pasarían casi 15 años antes de que estas prácticas dieran fruto. Ella no se dejó vencer durante esos quince años y si-guió insistiendo en la oración hasta que Dios le concedió visiones y visitas celestiales. Su mística llena de gozos celestia-les nunca la separó de la tierra. Ella no se escondía en la oración, mas bien salía de la oración para luchar en el mundo. Ella inspiró la reforma carmelitana y sigue inspirándonos hoy con sus escritos.

La Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, junto con otras cinco diócesis de California, está participando en un programa independiente para ofrecer acceso a com-pensación y a servicios de consejería a las personas que fueron víctimas de abuso por parte de sacer-dotes diocesanos cuando eran menores. Aquellos que fueron dañados hace muchos años y se les im-pidió entablar juicios debido al estatuto civil de lim-itaciones serán elegibles para levantar cargos bajo el Programa de Compensación Independiente para las Víctimas-Sobrevivientes de Abuso Sexual de Menores por Sacerdotes. La participación de la Ar-quidiócesis en el programa es parte de un com-promiso de largo plazo para apoyar y compensar a las víctimas de abuso, para la protección de niños y de las personas vulnerables, y para la prevención de abuso y conducta indebida en parroquias, escuelas y ministerios católicos. The Archdiocese is participating in an Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of Sex-ual Abuse of Minors by Priests The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, along with five other dioceses in California, is participating in an independent program to offer persons who were vic-tims of abuse as minors by diocesan priests, access to compensation as well as access to counseling ser-vices if they chose. Those harmed many years ago and barred from filing lawsuits because of civil stat-utes of limitations will be eligible to make claims under the Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Priests. The Archdiocese’s participation in the pro-gram is part of a long-standing commitment to sup-porting and compensating victims of abuse, the pro-tection of children and the vulnerable, and the pre-vention of abuse and misconduct in Catholic parish-es, schools and ministries. Nationally recognized me-diators and private compensation program adminis-trators, Kenneth R. Feinberg and Camille S. Biros will administer the program. Funding for the pro-gram in our Archdiocese will come from self-insured reserves, monies set aside for this purpose.
