’nMan (45) verskyn vandag in die Bell-ville-landdroshof op drie aanklagtesvan poging tot moord.

Die man, glo van Elsiesrivier, het Maan-dagmiddag by die Pick n Pay in Boston, Bell-ville ingestap en na bewering drie mense –’n handelaar, klant en bakker met ’n skêraangeval.Al drie is herhaaldelik gesteek, het die po-

lisie gesê.Kapt. Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder van die

Bellville-polisie wat die betrokke dag self opdie toneel was, het beskryf hoe erg getrau-matiseer die werkers by die winkel is.“Die man het net ná 15:00 by die winkel

aangekom en eers met die handelaar wat be-

sig was om die rakke te vul begin gesels,waarna hy die man aangeval het.”Volgens Nimb kan daar duidelik op beeld-

materiaal gesien word hoe die aanvaller dieman herhaaldelik steek.

Rustig“Daarna het hy doodrustig verder gestap,

verby mense tot by die bakkery waar ’n lidvan die publiek gestaan het. Hy het haar ookbegin steek,” het Nimb vertel.Die man het daarna na die agterkant van

die bakkery beweeg waar hy glo een van diebakkers wat besig was om te werk, bygekomhet.Die vrou is die ergste beseer, het Nimb ge-

sê.“Almal is bekommerd oor haar toestand.”Die vrou is in haar rug en nek raakge-

steek.Volgens Nimb het die aanvaller daarna

weer na die voorkant van die winkel beweegwaar hy die reeds beseerde vroulike klantweer aangeval het.Die persoon is glo tien keer gesteek, het

Nimb gesê. Die slagoffer is in die arm enmaaggesteek. “Oralwaarhykonhethyhaargesteek,” het Nimb gesê.“Die sekerheidspersoneel het hom gekeer

en hom probeer kalmeer.“Die man het homself oorgegee. Die wagte

het die skêr by hom geneem, waarna hullehom geboei het.“Die polisie is ontbied en die persoon is in

hegtenis geneem,” het Nimb verder verdui-delik.Dis nog onduidelik wat die motief vir die

aanval is.

“Dis beslis nie roof nie,” het Nimb byge-voeg.Tamra Veley, woordvoerder van die ket-

tingwinkel, het Dinsdag gesê berading is virdie werkers gereël.

Regter Dennis Davis het op 24 Desemberbeslis dat die besluit van Anton Bredell,Wes-Kaapse minister van plaaslike rege-ring, omgewingsake en ontwikkelingsbe-planning, in November 2011 om die ontwik-keling goed te keur, die korrekte besluitwas.

AansoekDié aansoek het gekomnadat die Durban-

ville-gemeenskapsforum Bredell se besluitin die Wes-Kaapse hooggeregshof betwishet.

Luidens hofstukke was daar drie hoofas-pekte wat die gemeenskapsforum betwis.Dit is dat die besluit na bewering nie in oor-eenstemming met beplanningsbeleid is nie,omdat die ontwikkeling buite die die stede-like grens val; die grond na bewering ’n hoë

landboupotensiaal het; en sekere vleigebie-de na bewering nie beskerm word nie.

VolgensDie Burger het regter Davis in syuitspraak beslis dat Bredell alle faktore oordie hoë landboupotensiaal, vleigebiede endie verskuiwing vandie stadsgrens in ag ge-neem het toe hy sy besluit geneem het. Hyhet ook die korrekte prosedures gevolg omtot die besluit te kom.

BeslissingDavis het verder gesê omdat die aansoek

’n hersieningsaansoek was, gaan hy nie dieminister se beslissing met sy eie vervangnie. Indien dit ’n appèlaansoek was, sou hyBredell se besluit vervang het indien hy ge-dink het dit moet verander, het Die Burgerberig.

Danny St. Dare, uitvoerende komiteelidvan die Durbanville-gemeenskapsforum,het gesê die forum “is teleurgesteld in diebesluit van die hof”.

Daarwordnougewagopdie geskreweuit-spraak en dit sal eers bestudeer word om fi-naal te besluit of daar gronde is vir ’n appèl,het hy gesê.

Buiten dié moontlike appèl, is daar ooknog ’n aansoek in die hooggeregshof han-gende dat die Stad Kaapstad se besluit inApril verlede jaar om die stedelike grens

aan te pas om dié grond tot ’n stedelike ont-wikkelingsgebied te hersoneer, hersienword. Dié besluit gee die ontwikkelaar diereg om die grond te laat onderverdeel enontwikkel.

St. Dare het gesê daar word nou gewag op’n hooggeregshofdatum vir dié aansoek.

Die aansoek is aanvanklik saammet eers-genoemde aansoek ingedien op versoek datdie twee sake saamgevoeg word.

Regter Davies het egter op 2 Desembermet die eerste aanhoor van die saak dié aan-soek teen die Stad Kaapstad van die rol ge-skrap nadat die samevoeging van die sakedeur die respondent teengestaan is.

KwessieNóg ’n hangende kwessie is die bedrog-

klagte wat die Durbanville-erfenisvereni-ging in November 2012 by die polisie aan-hangig gemaak teen die ontwikkelaar.

Daar word beweer dat daar met die ver-slag oor die landboupotensiaal van diegrond gepeuter is. Die saak word glo steedsondersoek.

George Sieraha, voorsitter van die Dur-banville-gemeenskapforum, het gesê hygaannie in hierdie stadiumkommentaar le-wer oor die regter se uitspraak nie, omdat“die saak in hierdie stadium te sensitief is”.

Die nuwe jaar het by Rust-en-Vrede in Wel-lingtonweg, Durbanville met ’n slag begintoe ’n reusetak van die ou, historiese eike-boom in die tuin Sondag afgebreek het.

Die tak – kompleetmet ’n byenes in ’n hol-te in die tak – het met só ’n geweldige slagvoor die ou ingang na die gebou geval, datdit die alarmstelsel van die gebou aktiveerhet.

Toe TygerBurger gisteroggend daar kom,was die ou ingang na die gebou behoorlikverdwerg onder die sytakke en blare.

Volgens Hamlin Jansen van Vuuren, ku-rator van Rust-en-Vrede, het die seker-heidsfirma haar omstreeks 17:00 gebel oordie voorval.

Twee groot plantpotte is stukkend en ’ndeel van die gebou se geut is beskadig.

Volgens Jansen van Vuuren het hulle ge-mengde gevoelens oor die verlies van dietak, aangesien ’n swerm bye kort-kort inholte in die boomtak kom nes maak.

Hulle wag juis nou op die Stad Kaapstadomdie byenes te komverwyder, voordat dietak opgesaag en die stompe verwyder kanword. Volgens Janse van Vuuren het dieStad onderneem om dit voor einde vandees-week te doen.

’n Byenes is skaars drie, vier maande ge-lede ook uit die holte verwyder en moes ditkort-kort gedoen word, sê sy.

Volgens haar is dié boom en ander bomein die tuin nie verlede jaar gesnoei nie. Hul-le het die Stad in Junie gekontak om dieboom te kom snoei, maar dis nooit gedoennie.

Die Stad kon nie betyds vir kommentaarbereik word nie.

As of 1 February, the City of Cape Townwillbe implementing a new load shedding sche-dule when load shedding is declared by Es-kom.

The current load shedding schedule usingthe days of the week was first implementedin 2008 and has been regularly updated sin-ce. It was designed specifically for occasio-nal load shedding during peak demand ti-mes.

“Since the latter weeks of last year, Es-kom’s national control centre declared loadshedding on a regular basis and over wee-kends. This has led to a situation where so-me residents repeatedly experienced sche-duled power outages at the most inconve-nient times and days of the week,” said theCity’s mayco member for utility services,Ernest Sonnenberg.

“In order to address this matter, the Cityhas set up anew load shedding schedule thatprovides a more frequent rotation and is tobe implemented in accordancewith the daysof the month instead,” says Sonnenberg..

With thisnewschedule, theCitywill ensu-re residents experience scheduled power ou-tages at a different time and week day thanbefore, rotating the inconvenience of poweroutages across all supply areas.

“An insert with the new load sheddingschedule and an area map of the differentsupply areas across the city will be distribu-ted with local newspapers during the lastweek of January. Residents are advised tokeep these and to refer to the schedule andthe map so they can take the necessary pre-cautions whenever load shedding is requi-red by Eskom,” says Sonnenberg.

The City has also developed a mobile ver-sion of the load shedding page which resi-dents can access by selecting the new tab onthe City’s mobile homepage.

While families across theworld gathe-red together to celebrate Christmas,one plucky dove decided to find his

own family.Pietie, as he is now known, has made a

new home for himself with the Lepnik/Lam-brechts family in Stellenberg.“My grandmother was eating peaches in

the braai room and he just came in and hada piece and stayed,” explains nine-year-oldBjörn Lepnik.“There have been other birds here before,

but they usually just stay a while and thenleave again,” his mom, Adele, adds.Matriarch Barbara Lambrechts recalls

seeing Pietie while she was hanging up thewashing and when she went back inside toknit, he simply joined her.“But once he saw Björn and Adele he just

stayed with them,” she says.Pietie seems to be a normal laughing dove,

but is very tame, and lovesbeingaroundpeo-ple. He especially enjoys sitting on people’sshoulders or heads.“He must be used to people,” Adele says,

because he even allows people to touch him,but he’s got no tag on his leg, like homingpigeons usually have. His origin still re-mains a mystery.Pietie flew into the family’s lives around

23 December last year, and has been thereever since. Adele initially tried to encouragehim to sleep in a bird cage, but he seemsmo-re comfortable spending his nights on top ofthe extractor fan above the stove in her kit-chen.During the day he often perches himself

on Adele’s laptop and “helps” her type, orwatches series with her, but only after he’sdone his morning gallivanting.Another reason she believes he must be

used to human contact is the fact that he lis-tens when you speak to him and even playswithBjörn.He comes insidewhen the family

ask him to and sits wherever they indicatehe should.When Pietie first came to stay with them,

he only made cooing sounds, but lately, he’sadded dove-like sounds to his vocal repertoi-re,whichmakesAdele thinkhe’s still young.Adele has made sure that Bjorn under-

week that these checks are crucial beforethe start of the new school year. Schoolsreopen on Wednesday 21 January.The City of Cape Town mayoral com-

mittee member for health, Benedicta vanMinnen, said these checks include gene-ral check-ups but also vaccinations whe-re applicable.

ImmunisationAccording to the national childhood

immunisation schedule children are gi-ven the tetanus and reduced strength ofdiphtheria vaccine, also known as the TDvaccine, at the age of six, followed by ano-ther round at the age of 12 years.“I want to urge parents to ensure their

children receive these vaccinations,which are administered via an injectionin their upper arm. Prevention is always

better than cure.“Also, our clinics offer these immuni-

sations free of charge. We still have a fewdays left before the academic year starts,so now is as good a time as any to get thevaccinations done for children who needto get these shots,” Van Minnen said.

well placed to provide advice on good nu-trition, which is a key focus on the direc-torate’s awareness and education pro-gramme.“It makes sense to preventmore people

Firework displays on New Year’s Eveare a common sight enjoyed by many.However, despite being a spectacular

sight, the illegal discharge of fireworks innon-designated areas has had a negative ef-fect on some pets and their owners.

One pet owner from Marinda Park inKuils River said she fears for the safety ofher dog after it ran off on New Year’s Evedue to fireworks near the family’s house.

“We came home from church after mid-night and discovered our dog had runaway,” said Yvette Smith.

Smith said the family’s dog Mo, a minia-ture pinscher adopted from the Animal An-ti-Cruelty League, has a limp and is easilytraumatised.

Lost petsAnimal welfare organisations have been

inundated with lost petsWanika Davids, spokesperson for the

Cape of Good Hope SPCA, said the organisa-tion collected about 20 runaway animals onNew Year’s Eve as a result of fireworks.

“Two of them were involved in motor ve-hicle accidents,” said Davids.

“Kraaifontein was the worst this year interms of illegal fireworks, judging by thecomplaints we have received,” she said.

Mpho Hlalele, Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague assistant general manager, saidthey had also their hands full. A total of 16lost dogs were handed in at their Bellvilleand Epping branches over New Year’s Eve.

“The majority were from Kuils River andKraaifontein and a few from Brackenfelland Goodwood.

“We cannot say whether they are all a di-

rect result of fireworks, but they were allhanded in on either the 1st or the 2nd of Jan-uary,” said Hlalele.

Strain on resources“That number may not sound terribly

high, but as you can imagine we have somany animals already in our care. It stillputs a strain on our already limited resour-ces,” Hlalele said.

She said most of the dogs do not have mi-crochips which could have helped the orga-nisation find the owners.

The City of Cape Town identified eightdesignated areas for fireworks. Despitethis, several complaints of fireworks in resi-dential areas were logged at the City’s 107call centre.

Richard Bosman, executive director forsafety and security at the City, said law en-forcement received 10 complaints relatingto the illegal discharge of fireworks on NewYear’s Eve.

People also complained to TygerBurgerabout fireworks discharged in Bellville andBrackenfell.

Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City’sfire and rescue services, said firefighters re-sponded to 14 vegetation fires between mid-night on New Year’s Eve and 01:00. Theyhave attributed the fires to the illegal dis-charge of fireworks as they do not usuallyrespond to so many vegetation fires duringthe night.

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword.The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though.We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts,locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

The introduction of the newgreen lidded wheelie bins forrecycled waste in the Bellvillearea was an excellent innovati-on. This has given all the localresidents a chance to getinvolved in a useful project.Unfortunately, there alwaysseems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Thisis soon followed by a stream ofstrangers who inspect the binsfor useful material. Theirpreference seems to be bottlesand similar saleable objects. Ihave no problem with thesegentlemen collecting thismaterial and disposing of itsomewhere for remuneration.After all we are all endeavou-ring to eke out a living. What Ido feel strongly about is whenthey sit in the park to sort theirsaleable material and leave alltheir discarded mess behind forlocal residents to clean up. Mybiggest concern, however, isthat if this practice escalatesand there is little left in therecycle bins, it would no longerbe profitable for the recyclecompany to continue this verynecessary service.

The homeless problem inBellville is now becomingchronic and if this matter is notseriously attended to we willsoon be having more peopleliving on the streets than in thehouses.

Hoewel die meeste lande dié terreur-daad ten sterkste veroordeel het, hetvryheid van spraak weer op nuut onderdie vergrootglas gekom. Baie kommenta-tors meen dat die satiriese koerantCharlie Hebdo alle grense van vryheidvan spraak oortree het deur sy draakste-kery met Islam en ander godsdienste.

Wat dié kommentators nie in ag neemnie, is dat vryheid van spraak in dieFranse tradisie geen grense ken nie – ’nland met ’n eeue oue geskiedenis vanskerp en soms kwetsende satire.

Hoewel dié soort satire in weinig anderlande in die wêreld geduld word – selfsnie eers in die VSA en Brittanje nie –hou die beginsel daarvan tog vir onsalmal in Suid-Afrika ’n les in.

Verdraagsaamheid teenoor mense watnie dieselfde mening as jy huldig nie, isheel moontlik die grootste hiervan. Asiemand nie aan jou kerk behoort, joupolitieke sienswyse deel nie, nie vir diedieselfde rugbyspan as jy skree nie,beteken dit nie dat daardie persoonverkeerd is en sosiaal gekastreer moetword nie. Elkeen is geregtig op symening en moet toegelaat word om dituit te spreek. Wanneer jy mense daardiereg wil ontneem, maak jy jouself skuldigaan fundamentalisme. Dit is wanneeremosie alle rasionele denke vernietig.

En ongelukkig ook ’n tendens is wathopeloos te veel in ons land kop uitsteek.

Jannie Moolman is ’n wandelende ensi-klopedie as dit kom by dinge wat homna aan die hart lê. Soos sy moedertaal,

geskiedenis, digters – van hier en van ver,lewend en dood – en skrywers. Skrywerswat gedigte met behulp van musiek inge-kleur het en nuwe lewe in soms vergete ge-digte geblaas het.

Dis ook die titel van sy nuwe produksie,Digters en Skrywers, wat op 22 en 25 Janua-rie by Die Boer opgevoer word.

Dat Jannie passievol is oor dié projek, isverseker. In een asem noem hy die namevan ’n hele rits digters en komponiste eneindig danmet ’n aanhaling vanHenry Pur-cell, ’n Britse komponis wat in die 17de eeugeleef het: “Soos digkuns die harmonie vanwoorde is, so ismusiekdié vannote.Musieken digkuns is susterskunste wat hand-aan-hand wandel. Apart kan hulle bloei, maarsaam is hulle soos die karaktereienskappevan humor en skoonheid in een.”

Hoewel meeste mense bekend is met diename van komponiste soos Schubert enSchumann, is dit minder bekend dat hulwerke van digters soos Heine, Von Goetheen Seidel getoonset het, sê Jannie.

“Wat my fassineer is dat komponiste enliedjieskrywers oor dekades aanklank ge-vind het by een gedig,” vertel Jannie. Hy ge-bruik Boerneef as ’n voorbeeld wie se Afri-kaanse gedig soos “Voshaarnooi” getoonsetis en later een van die gewildste Afrikaanseliedjies geword het.

Jo Niemand het Toon van den Heever se“In die Hoëveld” sy eie gemaak en ChrisChameleon se vertolking van Ingrid Jonkerse “Bitterbessie-dagbreek” is volksbesit.

“Ek wou eendag by Jak de Priester weetwat hom so inspireer om gedigte te toonset.Hy het dit so mooi beskryf en gesê ‘dit voelof Antjie Krog woorde uit sy mond gesteel

het, of sy net voor hom gelewe het’,” vertelJannie.

Hy praat met bewondering van die FAK-sangbundel, wat in 1937 vir die eerste keerverskyn het. The Spur Cape Summer Trail Series getsgoing at Tygerberg Nature Reserve tonight(Wednesday).

The series is one of the most popularevents on the South African trail runningcalendar, with each race in the countrywideseries usually selling out. This year seemsto be no different.

About 800 runners are expected to take ontonight’s challenging course, starting atsunset.

In order to cater for the growing numberof runners, the Spur Trail Series™ will forthe first time implement batching. In boththe long and the short course, four batcheswill set off two minutes apart in order to al-leviate congestion on route and make theexperience more enjoyable to both the frontrunners as well as the back-enders.

Bernard Rukadza will again be the manto beat as he returns to defend his summerlong course championship title. Some of his

strongest competition will come from long-time short course top performers RaydonBalie and Riaan Wildskut, as well as triath-lon veteran Lieuwe Boonstra.

In the ladies field, Marié Wessels will lineup as the favourite but this is always a wideopen race and it remains to be seen who willgive her a run for her money.

The second race in the series, which alsostarts at sunset, will take place at the Con-stantia Greenbelt on Wednesday 28 Janua-ry, with the third race taking place at Leba-non Forest in the Elgin Valley on Sunday1 February.

The annual Jointeze Dan Luyt 15 km roadrace organized by the Bellville AthleticClub takes place on Wednesday 21 January.

It is the Peninsula’s oldest road race, thefirst one having taken place in 1951. Entry

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’s En-richment Centre in Durbanville is due to ta-ke place on 12 February at the Bellville GolfClub.

The centre is set to open this month andthe organisation is in desperate need of dona-tions.

The idea for the centre came about whenthe parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spas-tic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairmentas well as epilepsy, struggled to find a schoolor daycare centre that would be able to ac-commodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, a full-ti-me caregiver took care of him. After reali-sing there is a need for such a school in thenorthern suburbs, Pierre’s parents decidedto open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church inDurbanville has made five Sunday schoolclass rooms available to for the centre.

The twoweremomentarily suspended inthe air.Underneath them the inflatable pow-

er boat roared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is always

a close call,” states the pilot nonchalantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised.It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul.Pilot Stefan Lindeque, and co-pilot Tony

Ingram hoped the 131km stretch from Gans-baai to Strand would be calm and unevent-ful, but they also knew that power boatingbeyond the waves was never really “calmand uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thus not surprised when the

waters became choppier than a lumberjackon steroids.For 10kmnearCapeHangklip their endur-

ance was tested to the limits – this after theycompleted 188km on day one, 86km on daytwo, 161km on day three and 111km on dayfour.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. The pounding water was extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says TableView’s Lindeque.At that stage of the race they knew they

stood a chance of not only winning theirclass, but also trumping the faster modifiedpowerboat class – something that no-one

has ever achieved before.But if one of them was thrown overboard

then the bid for this remarkable achieve-ment would have to wait till next year.After amoment that seemed to last an eter-

nity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan al-

Home stretchTheir backs were aching, their arms were

numb, but they were not going to throw inthe towel.He adds that day three of the Trans Aghul-

shimmied into mash, but their determina-tion and adrenalin ensured the final pushproceeded without a hitch.Suddenly it was all over.They reached the shore andwere crowned

the overall winners with a time of ninehours and 51 minutes.“Wewere in a different class, and themod-

ified class, which is faster than ours, alwayswin the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any of

their previous ones, of which there aremany.The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Champion on three occasions and has never

looked back in regret for choosing the sportin 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, surf-

ing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race in-side the surf line and was drawn to it. I’mjust basically looking for any excuse to getinto the ocean.”

Hours in the gym to strengthen his coremuscles, arms and back has paid off manytimes, and it is clear that Stefan is a longwayfrom hanging up his power boating boots.The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackermann, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.
