Flagging and inadequate matric resultshave been blamed on the government,racial inequality and a lack of resour-

ces, but a handful of schools continue to defythese challenges.Sinenjongo Secondary School principal,

Khulselwa Napote says the reason so manyschools fail to achieve targets is because ofa lack of determination.The school in Joe Slovo Park has become

a sterling example for under-resourcedschools in the province.Seven years ago the school’s pass rate was

27%but over the last four years the pass ratehas not dropped below 85%.The school achieved just under 90% in the

2014 exams with top learner NomakhakhayiMandiphiwe earning five distinctions.Of the 137 learners who wrote the last ex-

ams, 122 passed.“We are very proud of this sustained high

level of performance,” says Jessica Shelver,spokesperson for provincialminister of edu-cation Debbie Schäfer.

CommitmentWithout decent infrastructure and resour-

ces the school has gone on to show that some-thing less tangible is needed to perform.Napote tries to put her finger on their con-

sistent success: “The teachers, parents andlearners are all committed. If you motivateyour learners by inviting previous learnersto speak to them and be their role-models,then it goes a longway to convince themtheyshould be doingwell for their owngood. Thisworks better than getting professional totalk to them who they don’t know from any-where,” she says.The former pupils talk to the learners dur-

ing Spring School andWinter School, whichare held during the holidays.Suffice to say the learners are so commit-

ted to doing well they go to school duringtheir holidays.As for the parents, Napote says by analys-

ing the results with the parents, whetherthey themselves are educated or not, bearsfruit.“The fact that we explain to the parents

what it is that makes their child fail gives

them a feeling of being valued by the school.The teachers, parents and children all worktogether to achieve great results.”The department reckons Napote herself

plays an invaluable role.

Strong leadership“The principal has shown she is a strong

leader,” says Shelver.Napote tookover at a timewhen the school

was doing terribly on the academic front.She remedied this with a good work ethic

and superb micro management.“The school management team, and ac-

ceptance of the interventions offered by the

department are further reasons for theschool’s success,” continues Shelver.“By ensuring that the right people are ap-

pointed in vacant positions, the school gov-erning body also plays a pivotal role.”Anewposition of deputy principalwill ap-

parently be filled in the middle of the year,so Napote is convinced this will translate inan even greater academic success.Both Napote and Shelver emphasise the

importance of a blossoming relationship be-tween the school and the Rabie PropertyGroup (RPG),who provide human resourcesand capital investments.“Seven years ago when RPG adopted Sin-

enjongoas themajorbeneficiaryof its corpo-rate social investment programme, therewere only 34 matriculants against 180learners in the younger grades. Rabie spon-sors, among other things, the salaries of fiveadditional maths and science teachers aswell as a number of programmes at theschool aimed at increasing proficiencies inEnglish, maths and science,” says RPG’sMaggie Rowley.It becomes clear that corporate invest-

ment and departmental support alonewouldnot deliver good results. The key contribut-ing factors are good leadership, commit-ment and the support of the community.

Guinness World Record holder, MavericksBig Wave Invitational champion and inspi-rational speaker Chris Bertish, recently fai-led to break the 24 hour stand-up paddlebo-ard world record.

Rough seas made the challenge unsafe forBertish andmade tracking and following theathlete unsafe for his safety crew.

Last week Tuesday he attempted to paddle170kms in 24 hours.

This initiative, geared to raise awarenessand funds for the plight of children bornwith cleft lips and palates, began 6 Januaryat 18:00 and Bertish was picked up by the sa-fety boat just before 01:00 in the early mor-ning hours.

“It was the most menacing and confusedsea state I have ever experienced in my fiveyears of open ocean paddling and it becametoo unsafe to continue,” Bertish said.

“You can have all the planning, preparati-on and logistics perfectly worked out, but

theweather is the only uncontrollable factorwhich, unfortunately, became extremelyharsh at sea on the night. I would nonethe-less like to expressmy gratitude toCipla andIsland Tribe for their support and to myamazing team for the backup on this extre-me adventure. I hope we raised some greatawareness andmoney for the CiplaMiles forSmiles initiative and I hope we have drawnattention to the challenges these young peo-ple face on a daily basis which are far moresevere than the challenge I faced.”

Everything was ready for the Gordonsto move into their newly-purchasedParklands home.

All their possessions were loaded onto atrailer, their minds were set on how theywant their house to look and they finalisedthe termination of their previous lease.

Everything was ready, up until the mo-ment they tried to collect the keys from theestate agent who sold them the house.

It turns out the previous tenant nevermo-ved out.

According to the Sotheby’s Realty estateagentHelene Ludwig, incidents such as thisare becoming more common.

“The laws must be changed! It can’t go onlike this! Presently you cannot evict someo-ne if they don’t have another place they cango to,” elaborates Ludwig.

Stubborn tenantAccording toher theprevious tenant, Pas-

tor Ugochukwu Oparacho, had a signedagreement in which he acknowledged thathe and his family were going to vacate the

premise by 31 October.But Oparacho never left.That’s when the “nightmare” started for

the Gordons, who were stuck with no ac-commodation and all their possessions ona trailer.

Legal challengeTheywere supposed tomove into the hou-

se they bought on 1 November.Despite paying themonthly bond they ha-

ve still not moved into their house.More than two months later and Opara-

cho and his family are still living there.According to RyanGordon, Oparacho has

received an eviction order and must vacatethe premises by themiddle of February, butthe latter will not leave it at that.

Oparacho has sought the legal advice ofattorney Paul Sharoux, who has told Tyger-Burger that this matter is far from closed.

Another local newspaper ran an articlewhile the matter was still in court and Sha-roux says this is a case of contempt of court.

“My instruction is to proceed to pull thewhole application for eviction and subse-quently we might bring in charges of defa-mation of character. My client has no com-

ment at this stage, but he will challengewhatever happens from a legal point ofview,” says Sharoux.

Gordon hopes the matter will be resolvedas soon as possible, after anxiously witnes-sing it dragging on much longer than hewould ever have thought.

“There is anend in sight... I just try to lookat the positives. At the moment the ordersays theymust vacate the premises on 13Fe-bruary, and if they are still there then thesheriff will remove them on the 15th. Wecan’t afford to continue renting and payingour bills, so we will be in the day they moveout,” he says.

SpeechlessThe system has left him speechless.“I can understand the law protecting ille-

gal eviction. It protects the innocent. Butthis is not the case,” he adds.

Ludwig says Oparacho has signed a leaseagreement for a year which was supposedto be terminated on 31 October.

“They are illegal squatters ... The pastorhas been offered a selection of homes as al-ternative accommodation, but he refusedpoint blank,” she said.

Pastor locks family out

The Circle of Friends’ annual Santa for Se-niorsChristmasTeaPartywasheld atHuisZonnekus and Huis Ysterplaat in Decem-ber.

The organisers have extended a “verybig, sincere thank you to all who played apart, no matter how small, in making theday happen”.

They collected 616 gifts and the reci-pients were overjoyed.

Some people even donated cash to thegroup, which was used to buy extra giftsand food for the party.

Thanks to volunteers who helped andthose who donated gifts. Many in the twohomes, as well as others who live in Com-municare subsidized housing complexes,were treated to something special.

The 30-year-old man who was arrestedin connection with a series of murders,in which the bodies were discovered

near Century City station, was a local secu-rity guard.

The suspect is currently facing murderand a rape charges at the Goodwood Magis-trate’s Court, but police are investigatingfurther allegations.

He might be connected to six bodieswhich have been uncovered in an open fieldnext to the station.

On Monday magistrate Sean Lea postpo-ned the case to 19 January.

He was arrested at his home in Gugulethuon Wednesday evening after a breakt-hrough was made in the search for the Cen-tury City murderer with the last body,found on 19 December, Afrikaans daily DieBurger reported on Friday.

The man was arrested by a task team con-nected to the police’s Operation Combat andhas been linked to the bodies that have beenfound on an open piece of ground next to theCentury City station since February last ye-ar.

It was reported that the “drugged” sus-pect refused to let the police in when theyknocked on his door.

Apparently two items belonging to thevictims were found in his room.

The man has since also been linked to themurder of an unidentified woman who wasfound on the Goodwood side if the stationin September 2013.

A reliable source told Die Burger onThursday that the last body, like the others,was naked with her hands tied behind theback and buried in a shallow grave. The bo-dy was not very badly decomposed and the-re were marks, which looked like bruises,on her head. All the bodies were of black wo-men.

Besides the bruises, it also looked as if apiece of the woman’s face was “missing”. “Ican’t say if was possibly because of rats inthe bush that ate it or if the murderer cutit off,” the source says.

It was previously reported that the policewere investigating the possibility that themurders were committed by the same per-

son or people, as well as the possibility thatthe Century City murderer had killed el-sewhere in the province.

Sources close to the investigation revea-led that the suspect gave himself away afterhe used one of his victim’s phones.

One of the victims was identified as No-themba Ndondo from Khayelitsha.

The 20-year-old was found dumped on De-cember 19, four days after she left for workand did not return home.

The Khayelitsha resident reportedly wor-ked as a cleaner at Ratanga Junction.

Cape Town mayor Patrica de Lille earlierissued a R50 000 reward for information lea-ding to the murderer’s arrest.

A woman is fraudulently collecting moneyfor the Boyes Helping Hands non-profit or-ganisation (NPO).

According to the Milnerton NPO’s foun-der, Deborah Boyes, her organisation hasnever gone from door-to-door to raise funds.

“This woman has been described to be inher early fifties, with dark hair of mediumlength, well spoken and apparently extre-mely convincing,” says Boyes.

The suspect apparently goes from door-to-door in the Bothasig area asking for funds.

“She collected a large amount of moneyaccording to the woman who informed me.She had a list and people were donatingR100 notes. I do not have any people fund-raising for me,” continues Boyes.

The NPO is “struggling terribly” to raisefunds to buy land to build a home for abusedwomen and children, so news of someoneusing their name in vain is upsetting forBoyes.

“Don’t get robbed by a fraudster using

Boyes Helping Hands name! There is an ur-gent need for a safe home for victims of vio-lence and it’s terribly upsetting that some-body is fraudulently making money thatshould be going to a cause that’s strugglingto make a safe home for those who reallyneed it,” she said.

Dogs help uplift homeless man

In aworld wheremost people are so accus-tomed to seeing homeless people that theybarely notice them, two members of the

community decided to help a man who wasdown and out.While walking her dogs, Parklands resi-

dent Reese Harley noticed a homeless mansleeping in the park. That’s not unusual. Butin an area where people often distrust thehomeless so much they don’t even make eyecontact, Reese began talking to him. His na-me isMichael Ntehelang and they graduallygot to know each other during her eveningwalks.Reese provided a few things to make his

life more comfortable, and then she saw anopportunity to change his life completely.Reese runs a charity organisation called

Pawfriends, helping township dogs and cats.She gets them sterilised to prevent unwan-ted litters and helps obtain veterinary carewhen needed. Sometime she works with theFallen Angels animal rescue organisation.

Work opportunityFallen Angels is a haven for forgotten and

neglected animals near Melkbosstrand.They were started in February 2014, whenGaylBasson soldherhouse inFlamingoVleito buy a piece of land.Gayl and Shireen Williams are working

very hard, with limited resources, to createa much-needed shelter for animals in need.Table View and surrounding areas is a vast,sprawling urban area which includes thepoor communities of Dunoon and Joe Slovo,yet there is no SPCA or animal welfare shel-ter in the area. All the organisations wor-king in the area rely on a foster system tohouse animals in need.Fallen Angels still has no electricity and

very little infrastructure. They needed helpwith building enclosures and kennels, as

well as general care of their animals. Reesesaw a person who was down on his luck andneeded a job and a home, so she spoke to Shi-reen and suggested that Michael might besuited to help them.

Learning new skillsShireen didn’t hesitate. She trusted Ree-

se’s judgement and immediately went to

fetch Michael and his few belongings.After three years on the streets, a bad fa-

mily situation and a drug history, Michael(22) is now living and working at Fallen An-gels. He has been there for two months andis very happy. He loves working with thedogs and helping with the cleaning and gar-dening. He is learning new skills every dayand is very happy to have a place to stay.

Along with checking your child’s uniform,stationery and lunchbox are prepared for thestart of school next week, parents have alsobeen urged to check their children’s health.

The City of Cape Town warned last weekthat these checks are crucial before the startof the new school year. Schools reopen onWednesday 21 January.

The City’s Benedicta van Minnen, mayoralcommittee member for health, said thesechecks include general check-ups but alsovaccinations where applicable.

According to the national childhood immu-nisation schedule children are given the teta-nus and reduced strength of diphtheria vac-cine, also known as the TD vaccine at the ageof six, followed by another round at the ageof 12 years.

“I want to urge parents to ensure that their

children receive these vaccinations, which isadministered via an injection in their upperarm. Prevention is always better than cure.

“Also, our clinics offer these immunisati-ons free of charge. We still have a few daysleft before the academic year starts, so nowis as good a time as any to get the vaccinati-ons done for children who need to get theseshots,” Van Minnen said.

She said the city’s health staff are also wellplaced to provide advice on good nutrition,which is a key focus on the directorate’s awa-reness and education programme.

“It makes sense to prevent more peoplefrom getting sick which is why we place suchheavy emphasis on responsible behaviour,but also good nutrition.

“Our staff can help parents with advice onfinding a balance for their child’s lunchboxthat will positively aid their growth and de-velopment, but also keep them healthy,” VanMinnen added.

According to a statement by the City ofCape Town, the presence of great whitesharks in the in-shore areas increases thistime of year.The Fish Hoek shark exclusion net is be-

ing deployed and retrieved daily and SharkSpotters are monitoring identified beachesto ensure the safety of all visitors to the seashore, council has stated.Since September last year, there have

been 57 shark sightings at beaches moni-tored by the Shark Spotters.There have been 36 sightings at Muizen-

bergCorner, sevenatFishHoek, five atMon-wabisi, three at St James, two at Kogel Bay,two at Glencairn, one sighting at The Hoekin Noordhoek and one at Clovelly.With the presence of great white sharks

close inshore at beaches expected to in-crease over the summer season, the City ofCape Town is ensuring that the necessaryprecautionary measures are being put intoeffect.Shark Spotters are monitoring identified

beaches and the Fish Hoek shark exclu-sion net is being deployed and retrieved dai-ly.

Effective barrierThe Fish Hoek exclusion net has proven

to be an effective shark safety measure bycreating a physical barrier preventing anysharks from entering the bathing area.Trials conducted during 2013 and 2014 in-

dicated that the risk to marine life remainsvery low and that there are high levels ofpublic support for the exclusion net becom-ing a permanent feature of FishHoekBeach.Until March, the Fish Hoek exclusion net

will operate daily, depending on the weath-er.Weekends, public holidays and school hol-

idays will be prioritised.The exclusion net will not be deployed if

weather conditions (wind and swell) aredeemed to be unsuitable; this will be as-sessed on adaily basis. Ifweather conditionsdeteriorate over the course of a daywhen thenet is already deployed, the net may be re-moved as a precautionary measure.Additionally, if there is a high presence of

whales or other marine mammals in the ar-ea the net will not be deployed.–The net will also not be deployed when

trek-netting is taking place in the area.

If a whale moves into the area while thenet is deployed, the Shark Spotters herd theanimal away from the net and out of the ar-ea, using the exclusion net boat.This is in accordance with the approved

whale disentanglement strategy and resi-dents should not be concerned if this occurs.

Operating hoursOn days the exclusion net is deployed, the

operating hours will be from 09:00 to 17:00,and may occasionally be extended to allowfor lifesaving training or events.

The Shark Spotters will keep beach usersinformed via Twitter (@SharkSpotters) andFacebook as to whether the net is deployed.Surfers arewarned to be vigilant in the ar-

eas between Sunrise Beach and MacassarBeach during the spring and summermonths, as research has shown that sharkpresence in these waters is extremely com-mon at this time of year.Surfers should also be aware that sight-

ings of great white sharks at Noordhoekbeach are common on the days following anorth-west wind.

The 2014/15 festive season will godown as one of the safest on recordfor the City’s beaches.

The number of drowning incidentsdropped significantly when comparedwith the previous festive season.Three drowning incidents were re-

corded on beaches between September2014 and January 2015, compared to 18drowning incidents over the sameperiodin 2013/14.With tens of thousands of people at the

city beaches over the festive season, thisis an extraordinary feat, says City ofCape Town sport, recreation and ameni-ties department director Gert Bam.“We are pleased the combined efforts

of all role players have yielded such posi-tive results. The department’s extensivesummer safety campaign helped to edu-cate the public on basic safety tips to ob-serve when on the beach. In addition,lawenforcement officershavebeenhigh-ly visible and have confiscated a sub-stantial amount of alcohol, which helpedto reduce the number of incidents associ-ated with intoxication,” he says.The decrease in the number of drown-

ing incidents also speaks to the qualityof the lifeguard service provided by Life-saving Western Province and their asso-ciated lifesaving clubs – particularlyover the weekends around Christmasand New Year’s Day when a number ofpeoplewere assisted by the lifeguards on

duty, Bam says.“Despite the drastic drop, every

drowning incident is one too many andeach incident is documented and re-viewed to ensure that further precau-tions are taken to prevent such incidentsfrom happening in the future,” he says.“Thepublic are reminded to swimonly

in designated swimming areas indicatedby flags.“We ask that all people respect the in-

structions of both lifeguards and LawEnforcement officers and also report anyirresponsible behaviour in the water,such as people swimming off the rocks,so that they can keep people safe.”Beachgoers should keep the following

safety tips in mind:• Always swim between the red and

yellow flags. These indicate safe, super-vised swimming areas. An area outsideof these flags could have dangerous ripcurrents and tides.• Only swim in areas where other peo-

ple are present. Swim in groups and ad-vise friends or familywhen you go swim-ming.• If you find yourself in trouble, raise

your arm and wave to attract the life-guard’s attention. Try not to panic, asthis will make you tired.• If you see someone in trouble in the

sea, alert the lifeguards or find trainedhelp. Do not put your own life in dangeras well.

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword.The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though.We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts,locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Hoewel die meeste lande dié terreur-daad ten sterkste veroordeel het, hetvryheid van spraak weer op nuut onderdie vergrootglas gekom. Baie kommenta-tors meen dat die satiriese koerantCharlie Hebdo alle grense van vryheidvan spraak oortree het deur sy draakste-kery met Islam en ander godsdienste.

Wat dié kommentators nie in ag neemnie, is dat vryheid van spraak in dieFranse tradisie geen grense ken nie – ’nland met ’n eeue oue geskiedenis vanskerp en soms kwetsende satire.

Hoewel dié soort satire in weinig anderlande in die wêreld geduld word – selfsnie eers in die VSA en Brittanje nie –hou die beginsel daarvan tog vir onsalmal in Suid-Afrika ’n les in.

Verdraagsaamheid teenoor mense watnie dieselfde mening as jy huldig nie, isheel moontlik die grootste hiervan. Asiemand nie aan jou kerk behoort, joupolitieke sienswyse deel nie, nie vir diedieselfde rugbyspan as jy skree nie,beteken dit nie dat daardie persoonverkeerd is en sosiaal gekastreer moetword nie. The Community Interven-tion Centre (CIC), the localtrauma support non-gov-

ernmental organisation, startsits next training course for CICtrauma workers at the begin-ning of February.Applications to take part in

this course close on Wednesday21 January.The first part of the course,

which will run for six weeks inFebruary and March, entailspersonal growth. The secondcourse is trauma training (trau-ma procedures and protocols).This will run for 12 weeks, fromApril until June. The venue forboth courses will be at the Mil-nerton police station.

On­site interventionThe theoretical training is fol-

lowed by practical on-site trau-ma intervention training.Requirements include that

onemust preferably be from theBlaauwberg area, be 23 years orolder, have no criminal recordand have one’s own transport,CIC is a non-profit organisa-

tion which provides a free 24

hour on-site trauma interven-tion and support service to theBlaauwberg community andsurrounding areas.CIC provides services which

include on-site trauma inter-ventionandcrisismanagement,follow-up support, a temporarysafe house facility for abusedwomen and children, disastermanagement and staff support.

VolunteersAll trauma workers are vol-

unteers from the communitywho give their services free ofcharge. Volunteers undergo in-tensive training and assess-ments. Their training is for a pe-riod of one year in which theyare taught trauma proceduresand protocols in both the policeand hospital set-ups. After this,CIC provides specialist trainingon amonthly basis so that skillsand knowledge remain freshand updated.

Spur Cape Summer Trail Series kicks off atTygerberg Nature Reserve tonight (Wednes-day).

The series is one of the most popularevents on the South African trail running ca-lendar, with each race in the countrywideseries usually selling out. This year seemsto be no different.

About 800 runners are expected to take ontonight’s challenging course, starting atsunset.

In order to cater for the growing numberof runners, the Spur Trail Series will for thefirst time implement batching. In both thelong and the short course, four batches willset off two minutes apart in order to alleviatecongestion on route and make the experien-ce more enjoyable to both the front runnersas well as the back-enders.

Bernard Rukadza will again be the man tobeat as he returns to defend his summer longcourse championship title. Some of his

strongest competition will come from long-time short course top performers RaydonBalie and Riaan Wildskut, as well as triath-lon veteran Lieuwe Boonstra.

In the ladies field, Marié Wessels will belining up as favourite but this is always awide open race and it remains to be seen whowill give her a run for her money.

The second race in the series, which alsostarts at sunset, will take place at the Con-stantia Greenbelt on Wednesday 28 January,with the third race taking place at LebanonForest in the Elgin Valley on Sunday 1 Fe-bruary.

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’sEnrichment Centre in Durbanville is due totake place on 12 February at the BellvilleGolf Club.

The centre is set to open this month andthe organisation is in desperate need of do-nations.

The idea for the centre came about whenthe parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spas-tic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairmentas well as epilepsy, struggled to find a schoolor daycare centre that would be able to ac-commodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, his pa-

rents had to employ a full-time caregiver totake care of him.

After realising there is a need for such aschool in the northern suburbs, Pierre’s pa-rents decided to open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church inDurbanville has made five Sunday schoolclass rooms available in which the centrecan operate.

The twoweremomentarily suspended inthe air.Underneath them the inflatable pow-

er boat roared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is always

a close call,” states the pilot nonchalantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised.It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul.Pilot Stefan Lindeque, and co-pilot Tony

Ingram hoped the 131km stretch from Gans-baai to Strand would be calm and unevent-ful, but they also knew that power boatingbeyond the waves was never really “calmand uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thus not surprised when the

waters became choppier than a lumberjackon steroids.For 10kmnearCapeHangklip their endur-

ance was tested to the limits – this after theycompleted 188km on day one, 86km on daytwo, 161km on day three and 111km on dayfour.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. The pounding water was extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says TableView’s Lindeque.At that stage of the race they knew they

stood a chance of not only winning theirclass, but also trumping the faster modifiedpowerboat class – something that no-one

has ever achieved before.But if one of them was thrown overboard

then the bid for this remarkable achieve-ment would have to wait till next year.After amoment that seemed to last an eter-

nity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan al-

so returned to the inflatable Nulandis.That was close...

Home stretchTheir backs were aching, their arms were

numb, but they were not going to throw inthe towel.He adds that day three of the Trans Aghul-

ified class, which is faster than ours, alwayswin the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any of

their previous ones, of which there aremany.The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Champion on three occasions and has never

looked back in regret for choosing the sportin 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, surf-

ing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race in-side the surf line and was drawn to it. I’mjust basically looking for any excuse to getinto the ocean.”

Hours in the gym to strengthen his coremuscles, arms and back has paid off manytimes, and it is clear that Stefan is a longwayfrom hanging up his power boating boots.The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackermann, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.
