A South African Municipal Wor-kers Union (Samwu) marchthreatened to turn ugly on

Monday when about 40 striking wor-kers intimidated VRCID staff andtrashed the streets of Parow andGoodwood.

The march, which formed part of acity-wide Samwu protected strike,was escorted by law enforcement ve-hicles.

ButDerekBock,CEOof theVRCID,referred to the striking workers as a“mob” that threatened and harassedVRCID cleaning staff who conse-quently had to be removed from thearea due to fears for their safety.

Damage to property“The VRCID condemns in the

strongest possible way the action bythose striking workers who overtur-ned refuse removal bins and greencouncil litter bins during theirmarch,” said Bock.

He agrees that strike action can belegitimately used to highlight grie-vances, “but to damage council or pri-vate property and to litter the streetsfor other people to clean afterwardsis totally unacceptable”.

“The excuse used by unions thatthe criminal element joins theirmar-ches does not hold water anymore,this is pure thuggery and intimidati-on. The question to the unions is sim-ple: who is now going to clean up

their mess on the streets and who isgoing to pay for it?” Bock asked.

As themarchmoved fromParow toGoodwood, the VRCID redeployedtheir regular and additional staff toclean up the mess in Parow again.

According to Lt Kevin Williams ofthe Parow police, no serious inci-dents were reported.

Samwu said on Sunday 3 May thatclose to 6 000 workers across CapeTown would take part in the servicedelivery strike action until issueswith the City were been resolved.

More marchesMarches were planned around cer-

tain areas like the Cape Town CivicCentre for Monday. Thousands ofworkers are expected to march to theCivic Centre today (6 May), where amemorandum is expected to be han-ded to the city council.

According to mayco member forcorporate services, Xanthea Lim-berg, measures were taken to lessenthe impact of the strike on services.TheCity appealed to essential serviceworkers such as fire services, healthcare and metro police not to stayaway from work.

Talks to have issues around a chan-ged shift system, dismissals, victimi-sation and transformation and em-ployment equity have been takingplace since June last year.

But according to Mike Khumalo,Samwu regional secretary, the unionwas not satisfied with the City’s reso-lution attempts.

A Durban-based non-profit companyaims to uphold the dignity of sevenmillion underprivileged teenage girls

by helping them cope with menstruation.The Project Dignity Trust has distributed

39 000 SUBZ washable, re-usable sanitarypads that cleverly clip into panties, chan-ging the lives of Kwa-Zulu Natal teenagersand giving them a chance to attend as manyschool days as possible.Now Project Dignity has moved to the

Western Cape.Educational talks about puberty and the

female reproductive system form part of theactivities, giving the girls access to impor-tant information seldom discussed openly,says SUBZ and Project Dignity Trust foun-der Sue Barnes.

“Our goal is to uplift and empower thegirls of South Africa. An enormous num-ber of school girls miss a week of schoolevery month as a result of menstruationand not being able tomanage their periodsproperly,” said Barnes.She says the eco-friendly, re-usable pro-

duct is a practical solution for these teen-age girls and helps to keep landfills fromfilling up, while placing less strain on mu-nicipal wastewater treatment works.“For most women, sanitary wear is a

key item on their monthly shopping lists.But for many South African school girlsthese items are a luxury they can’t afford.Sadly, a lack of proper sanitary wear notonly means discomfort and poor hygienefor these girls, but missing out importantschool lessons, tests and exams.”Barnes’s company, SUBZ Pants and

Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championshipon Friday.The country’s top ranked mid-amateur

was on form over four days at VictoriaCountry Club in Kwa-Zulu-Natal, openingwith a five-under-par66 en route to an im-pressive seven-under-par 277 total and a fourstroke victory over fel-low Western Provinceplayer Elton James.The winning dis-

play – his fifth on themid-amateur circuitthis season – left the38-year-old Roux ex-tremely satisfied.

Keeping focus“I had the lead from

day one and kept it,but thatwas quite a lotof pressure and it feelsreally good that I wasable to pull itthrough,” Roux said.“I just felt my game

was there, but more importantly, I had tosleep on the lead for three nights and nee-ded a lot of patience to keep the focus.“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that
