While the majority of suspects were arre- sted in Gauteng, as reported by City Press, a number of them were linked to attacks on, and reconnaissance of, various local malls. The larger group was accosted after police analysed data and the operating network from cellphones belonging to suspects arre- sted after an ATM bombing in Bellville. The group is currently linked to at least 34 robberies, including those at cellphone and jewellery stores, and a number of ATM bombings, City Press reported. Some of the armed robberies to have hit the Cape since last year include those at Ca- nal Walk, Tyger Valley, CapeGate, Somerset Mall and Zevenwacht Mall in the northern suburbs, and in the south at Longbeach Mall, Bayside Mall and High Constantia. Kraaifontein police had reportedly been hunting two suspects involved in the bom- bing of an ATM inside the Seven Eleven in Northpine on 18 February. Cellphone data Canal Walk and Bayside shopping centres were targeted by robbers in the week of 17 October last year. The Vodacom store in the Tyger Valley Centre was hit on 3 October last year. Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River, as well as the iPic Centre in Soneike, were both tar- gets as far back as April last year. Of these, the most recent was the bombing of an ATM in Bellville, which proved one of the biggest mistakes for at least six suspec- ted members of the syndicate. These suspects were involved in a standoff with a police General at the ATM bombing at the Old Oak Centre on 4 March, and were being tracked by a special police task force. The task force was aware of the six making their way to the Western Cape by bus, City Press reported. Police soon checked their cellphone data and surmised the group had been scouting out centres in Brackenfell and Tyger Valley – both of which were hit late last year. The suspects are believed to have bombed the ATM after they ran out of money. Two were wounded and arrested on the scene, and the remainder arrested at the nearby taxi rank. Their recovered cellphones were used to positively link them thus far to robberies at Sea Point, Malmesbury, Canal Walk, Gar- dens and Stellenbosch. The six suspects were also believed to ha- ve been involved in the bombing of a Tatter- salls safe in Durban Road on 3 March. Highly sensitive Provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said their investigations were at an advanced stage. “This entire operation is crime intelligen- ce-driven. It is in an advanced and highly sensitive stage, and we are not allowed to comment any further on the matter.” According to the Institute for Security Studies, the past year has witnessed a 143% increase in armed robberies at shopping centres. National police spokesperson LieutenantGeneral Solomon Makgale told City Pressmost of the suspects responsible for the rob-beries inGauteng and theWesternCapewe-re now behind bars.“There are, however, still a few of their

associates – along with the dealers to whomthe cellphones are sold – at large.“We are now focusing on them.”Police were said to be using the cellphone

data and video footage from centres to iden-tify individuals.“All the information is consolidated to

compile profiles of the ringleaders, as wellas their modus operandi,” Makgale was re-ported as saying. This allowed the creation of a police data-

base that could be cross-referenced acrossthe provinces.“It gives us an intelligence picture that al-

lows us, through visible preventive poli-cing, to thwart the plans of robbers, particu-larly at shopping centres,” Makgale is re-ported as saying.“It is also clear that the syndicates are

multidimensional in that they not only car-ry out different types of robberies, but also

hijack vehicles, rob ATMs and commitother violent crimes.”The majority of the suspects that wer ar-

rested in Johannesburg, Gauteng, were ofZimbabwean nationality, City Press repor-ted.

Illegal dumpers ought to watch out nowthat there’s a bounty out on their heads. In an attempt to stamp out the scourge

of illegal dumping, the City of Cape Townhas established an informant reward sys-tem.It costs the City about R350 million per

year to deal with this issue, which placesan enormousburdenon theCity’s resourcesand ability to deliver services, as highlight-ed by Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille atthe launch of the illegal dumping campaignin February. The new informant reward policy allows

for payments of up to R1 000 for informationleading to an arrest or fine issued for illegaldumping.

Informants need to submit as much evi-dence as possible, including sworn affida-vits, photographs or video footage, as wellas clear identification of vehicles and/orpersons involved.Witnesses are only required to testify in

court if the suspects contest the matter.“However, I am under no illusion that

many people simply turn a blind eye be-cause they do not want to get involved, areapathetic, or don’t know that we are losingmore than a quarter of a billion rand a yearcleaning up after culprits when we could bespending thatmoney on other, more crucialservices,” said mayco member for safetyand security, JP Smith. He said he hopes the reward system will

result in more people coming forward withuseful information. There are more than 1 000 large dumping

hotspots across the city – some tens of thosein Bergdal subcouncil which includesKraa-ifontein and parts of Brackenfell.Subcouncil chairman Grant Twigg said

neighbourhoods such as Northpine, Scotts-dene and Scottsville are especially targetedin this regard.“I can only hope that this campaign will

successfully address the problem in theseareas, as it costs us many millions per yearto clean up after these illegal dumpers,” hesaid.V Members of the public can report illegal dumpingto the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.

EERSTE RIVER / BLUE DOWNS

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

An almost 60-year-old Cape Dutch stylehouse which is a Kuils River land-mark, has recently been restored to its

former glory. The two-bedroom house situated on the

corners of Van Riebeeck Road and LoerieStreet is the property of Gerhard Ester-huyse and his son Jacques, both local busi-nessmen.

Jacques said a decision was taken to re-store the house, built around 1958, due to itsneglected state over the past 12 years.

Most of the windows were broken, whichled to water damage to the floor, Jacques ex-plained.

In July 2014 the original Oregan pine floorwas restored, doors sanded down and win-dow frames repaired. The house was givena fresh coat of paint on the inside and out-side which will leave visitors amazed at itsbeauty.

“I thought the restoration would take usa month or two, but instead it took nearlyseven months,” Jacques explained.

He said the house first belonged to Cornel-ia Susanna van den Heever until his fatherpurchased it 30 years ago.

“I grew up in Kuils River and rememberthe days when this old house stood all by it-self with no other buildings nearby. Theroad down to the house was just a narrowdirt road.”

The house was first used as a residence

before a car dealership moved into a part ofthe property for 20 years, after which thehouse was left vacant until recently.

“Last year I decided to start my new busi-ness on the premises. Firstly we had to startby doing major repairs.

“What started out as a quick lick of paintended up in seven months of hard work

bringing the house back to its former glo-ry,” Jacques said.

He said although the project is still not100% completed, the results are outstand-ing. “We regularly get people stopping bycongratulating us for restoring this house,”Jacques, owner of Zinc Interiors and Pic-ture Framing, said.

“The structures in question were erectedon the Saturday and re-erected the Sunday, being removed on both days.“The action of the City and police is

‘Manne se harte was reg’

stryd tegemoet gegaan sonder beseerdeeerstekeuse-spelers soos Waldo Prins-loo (slot), RenierMarais (haker) enDan-well Demas (vleuel).Daarby het hardebaarde soos Marius

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

The second round of the SouthAfricanmain circuitchampionship due to take place in conjunctionwith the Extreme Festival sponsored by WingfieldMotors at Killarney on Saturday, is expected to bethe biggest meeting of the year.Topping the bill, the national production cars are

to be seen in a virtual one class format for the firsttime. This has come about after the class T entriesreceived more muscle by being allowed additionalturbo boost, larger tyres and unrestricted suspen-sion modifications. The results of the three events during the first

round at Zwartkops last month which sawMichaelvan Rooyen’s turbocharged Chev Cruze win thefirst race, with class A Audi S4’s in the hands ofHennie Groenewald and Michael Stephan takingthe next two, appear to justify the changes. However, the pit critics were claiming the tyre

wear on the abrasive surface worked to the benefitof the all wheel drive Audis. Additionally, Killar-ney has longer straights that may be an advantagefor the smaller turbocharged Chev and Ford FocusSTs.It sounds like a close one.BrennonGreen (Golf 5GTi) is theCape’s only rep-

resentative in a new production car category forprivateers. His main opposition is likely to comefrom Freek Burger Jnr and Snr, who were out-standing at Zwartkops in a pair of Mazda 3 MPSs.Then there are some who claim the skrik vir niks

tigers in the Engen Volkswagen Cup events are al-ways responsible for some of the best racing of theday. Of course the driver to watch here is teenagerSheldon van der Linde for whom big things are be-ing predicted. Although Sheldon won the firstround up north he was closely shadowed by Tas-min Pepper and Shaun la Reservee, with the Cape’sJohn Craig Jnr, not far behind. With the first race due off at 10:10, admission is

R90 for adults and R40 for scholars under 16. Thereis no charge for kiddies under 12. Tickets are alsoavailable from Computicket.
