HMS LA ROCHELLETERM 2 2015
ISSUE #2
So finally it’s here. Mid-year holidays!
One would not say we have only been
waiting six months for this moment to
arrive. For me it the past few months
felt like a year. It feels like since the first
day of school this year, we have been
working full speed ahead, running the
race and not being able to take a
breather, but finally it is time to stop and
take some me-time. For me, that will in-
volve grabbing my favourite blanket,
hiring the latest rom-coms, and eating
microwaveable popcorn while sipping
hot chocolate. Although Masterchef
intimidates me, I will most definitely try
the suggested recipe featured in this
term’s Avanti. Should it fail completely-
at least I have three weeks to “master”
it right?
For others this June holiday will mean
going away and forgetting everything
back home for the next three weeks.
Seeing as the Avanti is now available
online, make sure to sponge on your
holiday destination’s free wifi and read
some inspirational testimonies, discover
a whole new spectrum of Pinterest and
even ask Auntie Babs a few questions.
Whatever it is, make sure you take some
time for yourself. Use the next three
weeks to refocus your life and evaluate
where you are and if you are where
you promised you would be by this time
of the year. If that is not the case, then
it is time to change your game plan
and start working towards the person
you want to be by the end of the year.
I believe the only way you can do this
letter from the EDITOR
is through determination. Determina-
tion means never taking a step back
and never giving up. It is important to
note that whether you are taking long
strides towards your goal, or mere baby
steps, the key is that you are moving
forward, never stagnant, but improv-
ing day by day. So with that in mind,
remember that you are the most impor-
tant in your life and that true happiness
comes from within. Take the next three
weeks to look at yourself and make the
changes you need to be the best per-
son you can be, because when school
reopens, it will be full speed ahead with
the academic year.
Enjoy the holiday,
Erin.
THE TIME TO NOT GIVE UP
Dit was André van der Burg se inisiatief,
of, soos al die atlete in die skool hom
ken, oom André, tannie Marna se man.
Ek het meer by Gezelle Magerman
gaan uitvind oor die aand en hoe sy
dit ondervind het. Sy was in haar hoe-
danigheid as atletiekkaptein by die
geleentheid, wat by Domaine Brahms,
buite die Paarl, gehou is.
Die gastelys, buiten ons eie glansryke
Larrie-onderwysers en ouers, het inges-
luit Khotso Mokoena, Schalk Burger,
Caster Semenya en ander bekende
Suid-Afrikaanse atlete. Gezelle lag en
sê dat dit moeilik is om soveel atlete
op een slag bymekaar te kry en dat
die aand vir haar, as jong atleet, baie
beteken het. “Ek kon gesels met mense
oor my toekoms. Ek het my coach vir
volgende jaar ontmoet en ons het al-
mal saam oor atletiek in Suid-Afrika ge-
praat en waarheen dit op pad is.”
Die aand se hoof doel, tussendeur die
kuier en heerlike kos, was egter om
fndse in te samel vir die La Rochelle
atletiekspan. Daar is ‘n tekort aan
nuwe toerusting, onder andere, hek-
kies. Om die fondse te bekom is daar
‘n veiling gehou. Daar was ‘n hele ver-
skeidenheid artikels wat geskenk is deur
AAND MET DIE STERRE
uiteenlopende borge – van ouers tot
korporatiewe maatskappye.
aand ’n groot sukses was. “Dit was so
lekker om te sien hoe almal - die skool,
Larrie-ouers en self ouers van ander
skole - ons as La Rochelle en as atlete
ondersteun. Dit maak my trots om die
atletiekkaptein van La Rochelle te
wees.
Of daar weer volgende jaar so ’n
geleentheid sal wees, kan sy nie sê nie,
maar dit hang alles af of dié een suk-
sesvol was of nie. Die uiteinde van die
saak is wanneer La Rochelle ’n funksie
reël, is dit gaan groot of gaan huis toe.

Die aand van die 23ste April was ‘n eerste vir La Rochelle; Aand met die
Sterre.
The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival was held
from 13 to 24 May 2015. Over a series of 12
days, celebrities crept out from their crevices
and dazzled the world with some of the best
and worst fashion choices.
We are by no means fashion experts, and
have absolutely no right to judge any of these
individuals, but were doing it anyway. Let the
fashion commence:
KENDALL JENNERWHY ARE YOU SO FLAWLESS?
That is all.
CHARLIZE THERONThis homegrown beauty is looking fresh
as a daisy. Not many can pull off yel-
low, but this Benoni born beauty is
working it.
LUPITA NYONGOLupita Nyongo always blows us away
with her unique and classic style, but
this time she just looks like a bedazzled
salad leaf.

Can we have a moment of silence for
the hole in the ozen layer that is sig-
nificantly bigger after all the hairspray
needed for this updo. Fashion tip: this
is a great hairstyle for short girls who
would really like that extra length on
special occasions.
ELENA LENINA
NAOMI WATTSWatts going on here? She had it so
right from the waist up, unfortunately
the bottom resembles a bad bathroom
mat. It’s a no from us, Naomi.
SIENNA MILLERWe get that she’s going for the whole
kite vibe, we just don’t understand
why?
Matrics, if you still
haven’t got around to
getting ideas for the
Matric dance, then
hopefully this has
provided some inspi-
ration. If you feel you
can rock tinsel or a
kite with confidence,
then you FLAUNT IT!
LIYA KEBEDEWe’re getting the feeling that she didn’t
have a top to match the skirt, so she just
wrapped tinsel around her body and
thought no one would notice. Sorry, we
noticed. Nice shoes though!
EMMA STONEIt’s Emma Stone. In Christian Dior. But
nobody really cares about the de-
signer, let’s all be honest. Because it’s
Emma Stone and she is just so fierce.
Look at that pose, she’s basically Spi-
derwoman.
I WISH I COULD SAY THAT THE ONLY THING I REMEMBER ABOUT ALL GIRLS’ WAS WALKING AWAY WITH 1ST PLACE. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. ALL GIRLS’ WAS AN EXPERIENCE WITH UPS AND DOWNS (CAR SICKNESS INCLUDED).The All Girls’ debating team (which
consisted of Megann Ferriera, Erin
Rencken, Annabel Moore and myself,
Jordan Willett) had started preparing
long before that long bus ride to Bloem-
fontien. We had prepared rounds that
required research and extensive under-
standing into topics like nuclear energy
and hactivism.
After getting up at 3am and driving for
more hours than I care to recall, we ar-
rived in the city of roses; Bloemfontien.
Debaters tend to run in the same circles
and it was comforting to see a few fa-
miliar faces from previous tournaments
and workshops. Luckily, La Rochelle
was not paired up against any old
teammates or rivals.
We won all but one round and were
one of only 4 teams that broke to the
semi-finals; we were ecstatic! The semi-
final motion was: This House Would im-
plement a Beauty Tax and we were
OPP. Unfortunately, by this time, Anna-
bel and I were already feeling ill and
had to leave the venue more than
once during the debate.
That evening, Annabel and I were tak-
en to hospital, along with another 150+
girls, to be treated for what was later
discovered to be a bacterial infection.
This took a huge knock on us physically

ALL GIRLS: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE JUST PLAIN SICK (NO PUN INTENDED)By Kristina van Zyl
Not all of us had the honour of at-
tending this year’s All Girls’ Festival,
hosted in Bloemfontein. That said, it
leaves quite the majority of La Ro-
chelle students questioning what
really caused the disease at Oranje
Girls’ High School that weekend.
Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic officially
ruled that the illness that caught
grip of some 145 girls, is none other
than Shigella flexneri, one of the
four strains of Shigella. For the sake
of the more… sensitive readers, I
shan’t describe the effects of the
infection!
The infection can also be trans-
ferred by hand to hand contact or
touching an infected surface. As
symptoms take 1 to 2 days to mani-
fest, who ever had it would have
spread it. The crux however to the
large scale of the outbreak, was
the close proximity in which the girls
stayed. Medi-Clinic reports that the
sharing of bathrooms probably had
an influence on the number of girls
infected.
On the positive side, the girls that
experienced the effects of shigello-
sis, should not be victim to that spe-
cific bacteria for some time.
but in spite of this, we were ready and
anxiously awaiting the results of the
previous day’s semi-final the next morn-
ing at 07h30.
We had progressed through to the fi-
nals! This was a first for La Rochelle and
the fact that I was hospitalized the
night before did not deter me. The mo-
tion of the final was: This House Would
Grant Women an Extra Vote in National
Elections and we were proposing the
motion.
At the closing ceremony we were an-
nounced as the winners and that rep-
resents more than just ranking 1st to us;
for Megann and Erin, it was their last All
girls’, for Annabel and I, it was our first. It
represents our overcoming of long bus
rides, all-nighter-prep-sessions and sick-
ness.
Taking part gave us some practice for
the rest of the Boland Debating League
and we are well on our way to qualify-
ing for Western Cape Provincial Cham-
pionships. We bonded, fought, cried
and laughed our way through this
grueling challenge and walked away
stronger.
All Girls’ really is something that must be
experienced and I encourage anyone
who does a sport or cultural activity to
aim to be selected to attend this tour-
nament at least once. You will not be
the same afterwards!

MISS LA ROCHELLEJenna
We had the privilege of speaking to the
royalty of La Rochelle, Jenna Laughton,
Miss La Rochelle 2015. We asked her a
few questions about what it has been
like as Miss La Rochelle and her plans
for the future. Here are some of the
questions that were asked and her
answers.
Erin Rencken
HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOUR NAME WAS CALLED OUT?I was completely shocked! I think you
could clearly see that on my face. My
brothers are forever teasing me about
my reaction when they announced my
name, and I remember trying my best
to walk, in the most uncomfortable
heels ever, across the stage without
tripping.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY LEADING UP TO MISS LA ROCHELLE?My best memory leading up to Miss La
Rochelle was at the interviews when
they were choosing the top twelve.
We had to introduce ourselves to the
judges and I remember I stood up and
introduced myself as ‘the girl who eats
too much fruit and sings in the shower!’
I think after I said that, even I had a lit-
tle chuckle to myself - who says that as
their opening line? I also really loved
the photoshoot, it was lots of fun and I
think we had some great bonding ses-
sions there. I honestly was so scared
to walk in high heels and surprisingly I
think I got the hang of it. Dancing back
stage and rushing to get my dress and
hair ready for the next scene was a
highlight. Miss. La Rochelle was such an
amazing experience I will never forget.
Especially all thhe laughs and memo-
ries I made along the way.
AS MISS LA ROCHELLE 2015 WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AND WHAT CHARITY ARE YOU PLANNING ON SUPPORTING?I have a huge passion for young chil-
dren. I think the way they become your
best friend within minutes of meeting
them and their openness to love; warms
my heart. So our project this year is with
Nederberg Primary School in Paarl. La
Rochelle’s Interact is already involved
with them, so I think it is a great idea
to build on that relationship and show
our continued commitment to these
gorgeous children. I don’t want to give
away all the details just yet, the Miss La
Rochelle finalists have a few surprises
up our sleeves. You will find out about
our big plans soon!
“I remember trying my best to walk, in the most uncomfortable heels ever, across the stage without tripping.”
WHAT MEANS THE MOST TO YOU IN THE WORLD?Without a doubt family, friends and my
relationship with God. They keep me
going, keep me smiling and motivate
me to be the best I can be. Not only
that, but they have shaped me into
who I am today by just loving and ac-
cepting me the way I am and I owe
them the world for that. Jesus is my
reason to live and I know that He has
my life all planned out, all I have to do
is place my faith in Him and go with it.
Having hope and peace about your
future takes a lot of pressure off one’s
shoulders.
WHAT DO YOU NEVER LEAVE YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT?My cell phone: I can’t go anywhere
without it. I need to be able to contact
my parents and know exactly what’s
going on in the world of social media.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT SHOULD EVE-RY GIRL CARRY IN HER HANDBAG?Every girl has to have some lip-ice, per-
fume - smelling sweet always creates
a good first impression, hand-sanitizer
- especially when doing Biology prac-
ticals, and a small snack - you know,
in-case you get a bit peckish. I always
have an apple or some speckled eggs
or jungle oats bars are my favourites –
they never last too long though!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE DEFINI-TION OF TRUE BEAUTY?We’ve all heard it a million times, but
true beauty definitely comes from with-
in. Always being kind, compassionate
and sensitive to others is what will win
you their heart, their admiration and
loyalty.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER SCHOOL?After school, I am not one hundred
percent sure exactly what I want to be-
come one day. But, I know it is either in
the Business or Teaching direction. The
main priority for me is to be surround-
ed by people. I want to be passionate
about my job one day. Not only do I
want to be an asset to my business,
but a friend to my fellow colleagues as
well. I want to have a positive influence
where ever I go and be able to share
joy and some innovative ideas whilst
working.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY MAN ESCORT YOU DOWN THE RUNWAY WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? We actually were going to have our own
dates to escort us down the runway on the
evening of Miss La Rochelle 2015 and my
chosen date was my best friend Liam Dix-
on, so it would definitely be Liam or my two
adorable brothers, Josh and Matt (although
they are shorter than me, so that might look
odd!). On second thought, Sam Claflin from
one of my favourite movies, Love Rosie,
would also be an eligible escort.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S MOTTO?That’s a hard one, because I actually have
so many, but one of them that is very close
to my heart this year is: “Be fearless in the
pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.” I think
it’s very important to live life to the fullest,
have no regrets and love every second, to
go all out to achieve your weirdest and wild-
est dreams and that’s what I strive to do. I
also don’t what to live with fear, but rather
know that whatever happens is meant to
be, because that’s the way God intended
it. After all He’s the one writing my story; I’m
just the pen in His hand…
I haven’t posted in quite while – one
could call it the writer’s block. I would
type a few paragraphs and then just
end up erasing all of them. It ended
up being blotches here and there. This
is one of my more personal posts, well
actually, by far the most personal one.
Everyone has struggles. By now you
should’ve heard the famous; “the strug-
gle is real” statement. It’s normally used
when one is facing a tough time… Your
struggle might be school, friends, fam-
ily, emotions, thoughts, sport or even
work. You might even constantly be
declaring this statement above.
My struggle wasn’t any of these. Al-
though I may have faced difficult
patches in the areas above, it was nev-
er the one major thing that was con-
stantly held over my head, like a cloud
on a rainy day.
Mine was food. Yep, food. Writing from
a girl’s perspective, this might be con-
sidered “normal”. Numerous woman,
especially teenage girls, suffer from
eating disorders. Although, I’m not en-
tirely sure if mine could be classified as
a disorder. It wasn’t anorexia or bulimia,
but you could call it binge eating dis-
order.
I never became self-conscious until
grade 10, around the age of 15. I’m in
hostel so I have roommates. In grade 10
I was blessed with 3 absolutely AMAZ-
ING roommates, and if I could go back
and change it, I wouldn’t. There was
just one thing that perpetually occu-
pied my thoughts and determined my
behaviour to a great extent, and that
was the fact that all three of my room-
mates were skinnier than me.
They all had beautiful bodies and ate
healthily. They treated their bodies with
respect and care. All three of them also
grew up in very healthy households
(physically and emotionally), so having
a healthy lifestyle kind of came natu-
rally to them.
At that point in my Christian life, I had
an extremely good relationship with

STRUGGLE IS REAL
the
God. Throughout the year I struggled
with my eating, but the monumental
moment was August 12 2014. Some of
you may or may not know, but that was
the day that my dad had a stroke. I’m
not going to go too deeply into that,
but after this incident I began to over-
eat.
When I was depressed, I ate. When I
was lonely, I ate. When I was bored, I
ate. When I was “happy”, I ate. I say
happy with inverted commas because
I wasn’t really happy, but I made peo-
ple believe I was. I never wanted any-
body to know what was going on, I
never wanted anyone to see my hope-
lessness, I wanted to be “perfect.”
I silently continued for a while with
these unhealthy eating habits, con-
vincing myself that what I was doing
was okay and that I wasn’t really eat-
ing that much, until one night my best
friend approached me and told me
that other people were talking about
it and people noticed my behaviour. I
broke down into tears. I was absolutely
shattered.
I tried starving myself (it totally failed, lit-
erally, I loved food too much, I couldn’t
give it up).
I tried sticking my finger down my
throat, it worked but I felt dirty and full
of shame.
I even tried slimming pills (btw, they
DON’T work, it’s all a mental thing).
I tried Herbalife shakes, and that lasted
about…not long. I needed solid food.
I became so caught up in wanting
to look skinny and have a nice body,
even my Instagram feed was FLOODED
with pictures of people with PERFECT
bodies. It took over my life completely.
I would feel so guilty after eating sugar
or anything unhealthy, no matter how
often or seldom had it occurred.
The turning point for me was when the
following scripture from the Bible spoke
directly into my situation:
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I
plead with you to give your bodies
to God because of all he has done
for you. Let them be a living and holy
sacrifice—the kind he will find accept-
able. This is truly the way to worship
him.2 Don’t copy the behaviour and
customs of this world, but let God trans-
form you into a new person by chang-
ing the way you think. Then you will
learn to know God’s will for you, which
is good and pleasing and perfect.” Ro-
mans 12:1-2
The part that stuck out from these vers-
es (besides the fact that Romans 12:2 is
one of my favourite verses in the Bible),
is the first part highlighted in verse one.
I obtained a massive revelation, that
when you give your life to Jesus, you
give your LIFE to Him.
You don’t only give Him your baggage,
your past and all the things you’ve
done wrong, you give Him your present
and future, your needs, your finances
and your body. This is what I had to re-
alise: I had to stop depending on food
to comfort my emotions and that I had
to depend on God to help me in times
of need. I wish I could say that after this
scripture spoke into my life everything
changed instantly. The struggle was
real indeed and restoration was a pro-
cess.
It was a battle I had to surrender to
God, because my fleshly nature will
never be strong enough to overcome
with His power and deliverance. His
power will always be made PERFECT
in my weakness. I also knew that stick-
ing my finger down my throat, slimming
tablets, periods of starvation and want-
ing to look like everyone else was not
honouring Him.
We can’t compare ourselves to others.
It’s one of the biggest schemes of the
enemy. God has designed each and
every single one of us differently and
with a purpose. I had to realise that I
am the way I am, the way that HE
made me.
I needed to respect the fully-functional
body He gave me, treat it right and
make the right choices. I am built the
way that I’m built, it’s unique and God
considers it beautiful. He gifted me
with a fully functional body and my gift
back to Him is the way I treat and han-
dle my body.
I believe in the promises of God and
who the Son sets free is free indeed! I
believe that God WILL continue to lead
me in this stage of life and be there to
guide me in my darkest moments. No
doubt I will slip up and make mistakes,
but He is so gracious and caring and
will take me willingly into His arms!
I want to encourage you, no matter
what the struggle is that you’re facing,
God is so faithful and steadfast. He is
able to help you and set you free.
Our God is an awesome God!
All my love,Kelsey

AUNTY BABS,I’VE TRIED USING EVERY FILTER, BUT NO MATTER WHAT I DO I CAN’T SEEM TO GET 100 LIKES ON INSTAGRAM. HOW DO I BECOME INSTA-POPULAR?FROM INSTA-NOT-SO-POPS.Insta-not-so-pops, the most important
thing is to have good relationships with
the people around you. If you can’t
get a 100 likes on Instagram, be grate-
ful that you don’t have to deal with the
the 54 million in RSA that don’t like you.
It is far better to keep your friends close
to your heart as to be Insta-popular.
To write one article about such an en-
joyable and heart-warming term of
outreaches is quite a task. So I would
like to start off by saying thank you on
behalf of Mia, Sarah and myself for all
your support and enthusiasm at each
outreach. It really has been a very suc-
cessful term and we would not have
been able to spread so much love
without your help.
We spent some time at Rusoord old age
home, talking to some of the elderly
people in Paarl. They showed so much
appreciation and many of them were
very quick to say that they were also in
La Rochelle, commenting on our flower
dresses and good manners. We were
treated to a show from the youngsters
at ‘Danny se Juniors’ and shared some
Easter spirt with them. I think the way
they become your best friend in a mat-
ter of minutes is something to treasure;
before I knew it I had not one but three
beautiful girls sitting on my lap, play-
ing with my hair and a bunch of curi-
ous little boys stating how they liked my
name. These children are so precious
and it set my heart on fire to see their
positivity and innocence shine through.
They did not want us to leave, but af-
ter promising another visit, they let go
of our hands and waved goodbye. For
me it was a moment of true happiness.
I went there with the idea that I was go-
ing to bless them, yet left being the one
who was blessed.
Interact gee vir elkeen van ons ’n kans
om ’n glimlag op iemand se gesig te
sit, God se liefde uit te straal en te wys
hoe baie ons vir mekaar en ander om-
gee. Al is dit net om vir ’n oom in die
ouetehuis ’n drukkie te gee, of ’n klien
dogtertjie in die kinderhuis ’n paaseier
te gee. Dis sulke eenvodige dinge wat
’n groot verskil in ander mense se lew-
ens maak.
Ek dink dit is ’n eer en wonderlike
geleentheid om deel te wees van so
’n dinamiese groep jongmense met ’n
passie om ander te dien.
Interact does many outreaches
throughout the year, that are open to
all of you to take part in; just listen out
for announcements with details about
outreaches and how you can help out.
