Small businesses under threatSMALL and medium sized busi-nesses are urged to take control oftheir safety and security and softbeing seen as soft targets.

This is the view of Auto & GeneralBusiness Insurance’s spokesperson,Shaun Rademeyer, who says that themost recent police crime statistics aswell as Auto & General’s claims fig-ures for the first quarter of this yearsuggest that robberies at businesspremises is increasing and remainsan ever-present threat for SMEs.

“Unfortunately, the rising cost ofdoing business means that a lot ofsmall businesses don’t prioritise in-vestment in security or insuranceprotection,” says Rademeyer.

In a 2010 survey of SMEs sponsoredby the National Youth DevelopmentAgency, 50%ofdecision-makersates-tablished SMEs have sleepless nightsabout crime. No small wonder, giventhat 14 667 robberies at businesspremises were reported to the policein 2010/2011.

In Stellenbosch a number of small-er businesses, especially small shopsin Kayamandi, have also been target-ed by armed robbers. Cigarettes, cel-lular airtime and cash are mostly tar-geted. A number of shopkeepers wereinjured in these robberies.

Earlier this year, the senior re-searcher at the Institute for SecurityTechnologies, Johan Burger, con-firmed that robberies at businesspremises are on the increase, withmost occurring in Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

“Criminals are always on the lookout for situations that they can ex-ploit.

“Unfortunately, when a business istargeted during the daytime whenthere are employees or customers onsite, there is the associated threat ofviolence or injury. So, it’s not onlyabout protecting property, equip-ment and stock but people too,” saysRademeyer.

Security interventions such asalarm systems, surveillance camer-

as, security gates and burglar bars, accesscontrol toand fromthepremis-es, onsite security guards and armedresponse are among the measuresthat can be implemented to make abusiness less vulnerable.

Rademeyer adds that employeesshould also be educated on and ob-serve basic security principles. “It isquite common for criminals to gainentry toanotherwisesecurebusinesspremises on seemingly innocent orvalidpretexts.Employeesmust be ex-tremely cautious about who they al-low into a business premises.

“Staff shouldalsoavoid leavingval-uables such as cellphones and bags atunattended work stations, and if theyare the last to leave thepremises, theyshould know to check all accesspoints and ensure that the buildingis safely locked-up for the night.

“Everyone must also be madeaware of the contact numbers of thesecurity provider or nearest policestation should they need to ever callfor help,” concludes Rademeyer.

Delay in chronic medicine services THE Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU)services is in the process of being takenover by a new service provider, UTI.

The Western Cape Government ofHealth would like to let patients, whoreceive the CDU packets at publichealth facilities, know of this develop-ment and that it might delay servicesin some areas.

There have been challenges at somefacilities mostly from the MetropoleDistrict.

Due to the arrangements which needto be addressed, certain facilities could

experience a delay in the delivery of theCDU packets and increase the time pa-tients have to wait at specific facilitieswithin the area.

The Department apologises for thediscomfort and have met with theservice provider to look at these issues.

These challenges will not affect therest of the province when the service isrolled out later this year as UTI willhave its capabilities and systems inplace by then.

The service is expected to return tonormal within the next few weeks.

Even with all their work pressures, pharmacy staff continue to help andcomply so that all issues can be settledin order to supply a health service ofquality to the people of the WesternCape.

The department has asked that whenpatients pick up their CDU packets, theyshouldtakenoteof thepresentsitu-ation and with their support all partiesconcerned can make health care in theprovince better together.

Speak to your local service providerto find out more.

ook ’n groot Jeugdag-fees by dieCloetesville-stadion aangebied.

How to handle your living costs WITH the cost of living going up,we must look how we spend ourmoney and choose what is moreimportant - needs or wants.

“It is important to know exact-lywhatyouhave topayat theendof each month. This can easily bedone by making a list of every-thing you buy and need to pay, which will give you an under-standing of how you need tospend your money,” says EuniceSibiya, Programme Manager ofFNB’sConsumerEducationdivi-sion.

“It is very useful to see whatyourmonthlycostsarewhenyoudo not know how you usuallyspendyourmoney.Thiswillhelpyou make sure that you do notspend without careful planningand only spend on things whichare in the list you made for yourspending. Looking at your bank

statement each month or keep-ing a diary with all the thingsthat you buy, could help.”

In order to better understandyour living costs you can groupthem into four different groups. These are:

- Important costs, those youneed to pay in order to survive, for example, food, shelter andtransport.

- Fixed costs that stay the sameevery month such as schoolcosts, rent, loan repayment, etc.

- Carefully chosen costs thatyou chose to spend money ononce you have covered your im-portantandcareful costs, suchastreating yourself to a new pair ofshoes or buying take-aways.

- Changing costs which mayvary from month to month, suchas telephone bills, electricitybills, transport, groceries, etc.

“If you want to bring downyour living costs you can look atcarefully chosen and changingcosts. For example, cut down onthe amount of time you spend onyour phone and rather sendsms’s. This will bring down yourphone bill or the amount youspend on airtime and free moneythat you can spend on otherthings. Carefully chosen costslike shopping or spending onthings which are not in your listof costs that you want but do notneed, should also be avoided. Ifyou would like to treat yourself, plan for it andput it into your listof costs.”

If you buy an item on credit, make sure you find out howmuch the cost of buyingoncreditwill be. Remember that you haveto add in the interest and insur-ance if you buy on credit.

Ithemba for the youthSOYISO MALITI

JUNE is turning out to be a month filledwith festivities for the youngsters ofKayamandi, thanks to the Ithemba Com-munity Development Project (ICDP).

The Ithemba project was founded in 2007by Vuyokazi Dyasi, Pheliswa Mananga andKwanele Gugushe (chairperson).

Gugushe said the aim of the project is to“educate, mobilise and empower the youngpeople of Kayamandi in general about sub-stance abuse”.

He bemoaned the influence of alcohol anddrugs amongst the Kayamandi youth, sayingthey’d “noticed how it had been infiltratingthe youth”.

“We’re looking at helping them shape theirfutures.Wehaveabout85youngpeopleatourdisposal.”

Mostof thechildrenattend theproject afterschool at the Kayamandi Tourism Corridor.

The project is focused on guiding the youththrough its sports, drama and cultural pro-grammes. Gugushe also urged volunteersand potential donors to come forward “any-time or day to help the project grow”.

“So far we’ve only had a few European stu-dents come in as volunteers and helping the

children with Mathematics and literacy,”said Gugushe. “We are keen to work withother projects. We lack financial support andneed more people to help us in our quest toengage the youth more,” Gugushe continued.

The ICDP wants to dedicate the whole ofthe month, and not just Youth Day, to theyouth. For more information on the projectcontact Kwanele Gugushe at [email protected] or call 072 139 6057.

Help ORThelp childrenORT SA CAPE is an organization whosediverse educational expertise enrichesimpoverished schools and communitiesin the Western Cape.

In South Africa ORT SA CAPE is part ofORT SA, which celebrated their 75th anni-versary in 2011 and it also forms part ofWORLD ORT, one of the largest non-govern-mental education and training organiza-tions in the world, which celebrated its 130thanniversary in 2010.

In line with the World ORT vision, “Edu-cating for Life”, ORT SA CAPE’s objectiveis contributing to the improvement of thequality of education in South Africa, wherepossible, using science and technology.

Since 2006, as part of the ORT SEEDproject, they have worked intensively in tendisadvantaged rural schools in three differ-ent provinces offering teacher training,classroom-based support, classroom librar-iesandnumeroushoursof staff developmentand school management training.

Thisproject createda legacyof its ownandsupportedsomeremarkable school improve-ments. In addition, ORT SA CAPE is in itssecond year of training Stellenbosch grade

R teachers in Life Skills (Science and Tech-nology), Numeracy and Literacy in 2012.

A very exciting development in the recentpast is the implementation of Robotics as apowerful teaching tool.

ORT SA CAPE realised that this tool isused all over the world to spark the interestof young and teenage pupils in Science andTechnology.

ORT SA CAPE has coached and empow-ered teams to participate in the annual FirstLego league Robotics competition from 2008.

A new innovation in 2012 in ten of the ORTSEED schools in Stellenbosch and Fransch-hoek is the introduction of professionallearning communities for the Maths andLanguage teachers in collaboration with theUniversities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. However, they have also recognised that pu-pils also need stimulation and learning sup-port and therefore ORT will be offering con-structive enrichment after-school pro-grammes, consisting of reading, writing andMaths as well as Robotics, in each of theschools.

To make this project sustainable, they re-quire the support and input of local volun-teers toparticipate in theseprogrammesoneafternoon per week.

These volunteers preferably should havesome experience of working with childrenand they should have their own transport, although some shared transport will beavailable. Volunteers will receive appropri-ate training before participating in the pro-gramme which will run from July to Decem-ber (including holidays).

Please help ORT to make a difference inthe lives of children that have the ability toexcel even with all the challenges they faceon a day to day basis.
