Less school vandalismduring June holidaysDuring the June/ July holiday period 23schools across the province reported in-cidences of vandalism or burglary.

This represents a decrease from 31 inci-dents reported for the same period last year.Of the 23 schools, the CapeWinelands Dis-

trict reportednine incidents of burglary andvandalism. The Metro Central District had four inci-

dents reported, four from the Metro SouthDistrict and two from the Metro North Dis-trict.Inorder toprotect the schools as faraspos-

sible from burglary and vandalism over theholiday period, theWesternCape EducationDepartment (WCED) Safe Schools directo-rate arranged for increased security at someof our schools in communities identified ashigh risk.About 495 schools received either 24 hour

security or benefited from cluster patrols.Unfortunately, despite these measures, someofourschools still fall victimtovandal-ism and burglaries during the school holi-day.The WCED received one report of vandal-

ism and burglary from each of the followingdistricts; the Eden andKarooDistrict, Over-bergDistrict,WestCoastandMetroEastDis-trict.Only one case has been classified as “ma-

jor”, 21caseshavebeenclassifiedas“minor”and one case has been classified as “negligi-ble”.In most cases, perpetrators broke into the

school bathrooms and vandalised the interi-ors.

In other cases, computer labs, school offic-es and classrooms were broken into. Elec-tronicswere stolenanddoorsandgatesdam-aged while trying to gain entry. The WCED has received estimated costs

of damages for eight of the 23 schools. Thisamount is estimated to be approximatelyR400 000 so far.School vandalism not only comes at a cost

to the Education Department but also thelearners and the community are negativelyaffected. It is important for communities to take

ownership of the schools in their area andrealise that they have an important role toplay in protecting their community’s assets.WCEDurge communitymembers to be ex-

tra vigilant throughout the year and to im-mediately report any suspicious behaviouror activities that occur within the vicinityof schools.Debbie Schäfer, Minister of Education in

the Western Cape, would like to encouragecommunities with neighbourhood watchesto include the schools in their patrols andincreasepatrolsespeciallyduring theschoolholidays. They do however need to acknowledge the

decline in reported incidents and thus thankSafe Schools, Metro Police, SAPS and mem-bers of the community for their sustainedefforts in assisting to bring an end to vandal-ism and burglary in our schools.(Please note: The WCED does not identify

the names of schools that have been affectedby burglary and vandalism. In many cases, the damages caused by the perpetrators canresult in a security threat or breach).

Watter mense

Verwag jy laer verkope as gevolgdaarvan?

ning-aanbieding oor“Waardes” by die Uni-versiteit StellenboschBestuurskool (USB) inBellville gelewer.Susmanhetookmel-
