) Meld dadelik enige verdagteaktiwiteite by die polisie of jou se-kerheidsmaatskappy aan.

) Wees oplettend wanneer jy diehuis of erf verlaat of daar aankom.

Huiseienaars moet daarvan be-

Madiba statue to be unveiledThe NelsonMandela statue at theStellenbosch Town Hall will beunveiled Wednesday 2 October.

The artwork that was approved bythe Nelson Mandela Foundation wascreated by local landscape artist Stri-jdom van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe, one of the most re-nownedlandartists intheworld, wasthe perfect choice for an art installa-tion that needed to form part of theredesignof theTownHallgardenpre-cinct.

Stellenbosch, through this art-work, pays homage to an interna-tional statesman, symbol of peaceand unity and South Africa’s firstdemocratically elected president,Nelson Mandela.

The statue will enhance the archi-tecturaldetailof thestately townhallcomplex. Seen against the backdrop

of the new council chambers, thestatue will perpetually remind resi-dents and visitors alike of the longwalk to freedom, whilst also remind-ing them to follow the example set bythis humble icon and humanist.

The Stellenbosch Town Hall andCouncil Chambers has become acommunal meeting place for the peo-ple of Stellenbosch and this statuewill serve to connect the characterof the path leading to the precinct tothat of the building.

The unveiling ceremony will be at-tended by amongst others, the Minis-ter for Cultural Affairs and Sport, DrIvan Meyer, the Executive Mayor,Conrad Sidego and other importantdignitaries as well as pupils from lo-cal schools.

The artwork consists of a concreteblock which is 3,6 m high and 4 mwide.

This block will be clad in whitemarble on which a map of a sectionof South Africa will be subtly etchedon either side.

Thesectionsofmapchosenpertainto those areas in South Africa whichhave played a role in Madiba’s life.A laser-cut silhouette of Madiba’sface in 20 mm Corten steel will beplaced in front of the marble block“canvas” on either side.

The installation continues alongthe ground next to the block wherea marble column displays one ofMadiba’s most famous quotes: “Nev-er, never and never again will thisbeautiful country of ours be op-pressed by one over another”.

The design of the artwork beganin May last year. The process hasevolved over the past year, but theactual production of the various ele-ments has taken about eight weeks.

Olympian Elana Meyer totrain Stellenbosch athletesXANTHE HUNT

Training with an Olympicathlete is the dream ofmany youngsters.

Fortunately for pupils inStellenbosch, this dreamcould become a reality when1992 Olympian Elana Meyerhostsasecondtrainingwork-shop here during December.

The first clinic was heldduring the recent Septemberschool holidays.

Meyer won a silver medalat the 1992 Barcelona Olym-pics for the women’s 10 000 mand broke six world half-marathonrecordsduringhercareer.

The Stellenbosch Acade-my of Sport hosted Meyerand her team of expert sportscientists during the four-day intensive athletics work-shop for 12- to 18-year-olds.

“We are training athletes to performat the highest level, at Olympic level,”said Meyer.

“I don’t think that there are enoughstructures in place to give runners andother athletes the expert advice thattheyneedtoperformat thehighestpos-sible level. There is a training deficit.”

To fill this deficit, and ensure thatSouth Africa win more medals at inter-national competitions, Meyer, along-side sports medicine expert Dr RossTucker and long-distance runningcoach Ernie Gruhn began Endurocadin June this year as a training body foraspiring runners.

“Like soccer, athletics – especiallyrunning – is one of the few truly globalsports: anyone, anywhere, can run,”explains Meyer.

“So it is an extremely competitive, but also richly diverse, field. You haveto work hard and get the best possibletraining, but it is well worth it in theend.”

Although Endurocad focuses onlong-distance runners – from 10 000 mto full marathons – the schools’ train-ing workshop caters for all athletes.

“Our idea is to encourage all Stellen-bosch youngsters to participate: wewant to provide training for all emerg-

ing talent, not only runners.”However, Meyer notes, she

will keep a special eye out forfleetness of foot.

“If the participants showrealpromise thenwewilldef-initely invite them into theNational Satellite Pro-gramme.”

The Satellite ProgrammeMeyer refers to, was estab-lished through Endurocadandactsasanorganisingandfacilitating body underwhich promising athletesare identified, monitored, trained and mentored bysports scientists, coaches, and Meyer herself.

In June, the first “assess-ment camp” was held forpromising long-distancerunners between the ages of18 and 24 years. At the camp, runners are subjected to abattery of physical and psy-chological tests by sports

medicine specialists to see if they havewhat it takes to “go pro”.

“Not everyone can take the extremepressure of endurance running, so wereally choose those who show excep-tional promise.”

The National Satellite Programmehas already bred one success, Stellen-bosch’s Landi Greyling, who wasplaced ninth at the World Trail Run-ning Championships this year.

“WearehopingthattheStellenboschworkshop bears fruit,” says Meyer.“South Africa can win more medals inInternational competitions: we justneed better training.”

Senior pupils must plan for their future nowHuge decisions are looming for SA’ssenior pupils – be they in Grade 9or matric – and the best way to dealwiththesedecisions is toarmoneselfwith as much information as possi-ble to inform one’s course of action,an education expert says.

“This is a time of the year for bigdecisions tobemadebyyoungpeoplewho are generally not necessarilyready to make decisions that havesuch long-term consequences,” saysDr Felicity Coughlan, director of theIndependent Institute of Educationwhich provides higher education onmore than 20 registered campuses inSA.

Matric pupils have only a few daysleft to apply for access to most publicuniversities, while Grade 9 pupilsneed to make their selection of sub-jects for the National Senior Certifi-

cate examinations they will write inthree years’ time.

For both these groups to decide onwhat they want to do after school itis necessary to get as much informa-tionaspossible tomake thebestdeci-sion possible.

“This is a time for measured ac-tion,” advises Coughlan. “Thesechoices are daunting because theyhave long-term consequences, par-ticularly in a country such as ourswhere space within the higher edu-cation sector is limited. However,theseconsequencesarenotnecessar-ily as dire as the hype often suggests. As long as the decisions that need tobe made now are made based on asmuch information as you can possi-bly access, you can mitigate the lim-iting effect of wrong decisions downthe line.”

For both Grade 9 and 12 pupils, theIIE suggests that they spend time in-vestigating the websites of publicand private post-school institutionstodetermine thecoursesonoffer andtheir entry requirements.

“Look at programmes and institu-tions you have not considered before– look at fields that you have heardvery little or perhaps even nothingabout. We suggest you use institu-tional websites for this, as they arethe best place to find lots of informa-tion about a variety of fields – all inone place.”

Once the research has been con-cluded, it is time to lookat the resultsnecessary for entry to courses, to de-termine whether their goal is realis-tic. “There is a difference between agoal andadream.Wecouldall dreamof being vets or rocket scientists, but

this is only a realistic goal for anyof us if we know what we need toachieve to access this line of studyandifwecandetailwhatwearegoingtodo toachievewhatweneed. If youranswers – even to yourself – arevagueaboutwhatyouwillneed todo, then you are definitely chasing adream and not a goal.”

She suggests that pupils choosesubjects that open doors:

) Hold on to mathematics as longas you possibly can, but don’t placeyourself at risk of not achieving anNSCatall ifall the indicatorsarethatyou will in fact be better served withmaths literacy. Base this choice onfacts – your performance and theneed for maths to achieve your goal(as opposed to a dream).

) Choose subjects that stretchyouand choose at least one you love or

are very good at.) Ask more than one person for

advice but make a goal-based deci-sion.

The same structured decision-making should informpupils’ choiceof where to study:

) Your dream may be to study en-gineering at one of the “big five” in-stitutions and there is no reason notto aspire to this if you are doing real-ly well in Maths and Science and allyour other subjects.

) Ifyourperformanceisn’tstellar, then begin to chase a goal that ismore within your grasp – either byway of a different course or a differ-ent institution or both.

) Remember that there is both apublic and a private sector – keepyour options open by consideringboth in relation to your goals.
