Wat ons by daardie euwel in baiese lewens uitbring: nuwejaarsvoor-nemens.

Onge-lukkig is dit so dat as dinge stresvolbegin raak, verval mense maklik te-rug in hul ou, ongesonde gewoon-tes.

Get in financial shape for 2015After a long and hectic year, manyworking South Africans had sometime off with loved ones. Many of usalso have some financial breathingroom during this time, thanks toyear-end savings payouts, bonusesor 13th cheques. It’s also when weplan to start the New Year with reso-lutions to get into better physical andfinancial shape.

The reality is that these plans toget fit often come to nothing. EveryJanuary finds many of us regrettingour spending sprees and festivebinges.

John Manyike, head of financialeducation at Old Mutual, says: “Toooften,SouthAfricanswho’veworkedhard throughout the year end up be-ing pressured to overspend. Manysuccumb to aggressive marketingand clever advertising to buy stuffthey don’t need to impress other peo-ple.

“Buying stuff we don’t need be-comes a real problem when it meanswe can’t afford the stuff we do needcome January for expenses likeschool fees, uniforms and text-books.”

There are some direct correlationsbetween physical fitness and build-ing personal wealth. Neither can beachieved instantly and both holdlong-term benefits for you and yourfamily if you’re willing to stick to ba-sic principles.

“It’s never too late or too early tostart getting into shape and to get ad-vice on financial planning.”

Good personal financial manage-ment and financial advice is moreimportant than ever, points out Man-yike. “The most recent Old MutualSavings and Investment Monitorfound that more than 80% of work-ing, metropolitan South Africanswant help on how to save.

“The pressure to ‘splash out’ canput breadwinners and especiallyparents in an unenviable position. Some breadwinners spend their bo-nuses excitedly before they’ve evenbeen paid and end up in more finan-cial trouble than if they hadn’t beenpaid a bonus at all.

“Many – too many – feel it’s easyto spend on credit and deal with theconsequences in January or Februa-ry,” says Manyike.

This can be hard on relationshipstoo, he adds, especially when onepartner is more careful with moneythan the other. “The cautious onecan end up feeling like a killjoy who’salways saying no.”

It’s not only marketers who areputting pressure on people to spend.Youngsters who expect the kind ofgifts their friends get, or expect ex-pensive holidays, put pressure onparentswhodon’twant todisappointtheir children or make them feel ne-glected.

This can trap families in a spiralof high interest and debt, and caneven lead to blacklisting, garnisheeorders and repossessions.

One way to try to avoid this is toenlist your family’s help: “Kids canbe subject to peer pressure and passthat on to their parents, who end upfeeling they’re depriving their fami-lies by not splurging.

It can be a difficult conversationand it can initially lead to tears andtantrums.

But it’s worth working throughthis. Instead of being badgered intobuying new cellphones, for example, keep using the same ones and saveupforaseasideholidayorsomethingthe whole family can enjoy.

But more importantly, says Man-yike, turn budgeting and being debt-free into a family project.

“This may require a completeturn-around in your attitude to-wards money, from ‘spend-first-and-save-the-rest’ to ‘save-first-and-spend-the-rest’.”

He suggests the following steps, adapted from Old Mutual’s On theMoney financial education pro-gramme.

Where am I?V Make a list of what you spend.

Nowadays, money can seem unreal, just a swipe here and there and anumber on a screen. Many of usknow that we’re overspending, buthide from the ugly truth.

V Write down your fixed expenses:rent or bond repayments, insurancepremiums, school fees, union mem-bership fees.

V Now list your variable expenses:food, transport, rates, cellphone, clothing and entertainment. Don’tsabotage your efforts by underesti-mating costs.

V List your irregular expenses: carmaintenance, home repairs and soon. Try to work out an averagemonthly cost. Again, if in doubt, it’sbetter to overestimate slightly thanget caught short.

V Add them up. If they total morethan your earnings, you need to act.But even so, pat yourself on the back:now that you know exactly whereyou are financially, you’ve alreadyput yourself in a stronger position.Back in the blackV Listyourexpenses inorderof im-

portance. You need accommodation, transport and food. Apart from that, ask yourself whether an expense iscrucial, or whether it can be cut out.Typically the items that can be elimi-nated will be things such as enter-tainment and clothing.

VUse the money you’ve saved to re-duce your debt, especially creditcard and store card debt, which car-ries high interest.

You’ve got the powerVOnce you’re debt free, establish a

basic emergency fund for unexpect-ed expenses. A month’s salary is agood start. While it may take a whileto build up, it’ll give you a real senseof security once you have it. Manypeople are just one month away frompoverty because if their salary wasnot paid for a month, it would takenearly 12 months for them to recoverfinancially.

VInvest some money each monthfor your long term and medium termfinancial goals, like saving for yourretirement and your kids’ education. This excludes your employer’s pen-sion scheme or your own retirementinvestments. A financial adviser canhelp you.

VEmpower yourself with knowl-edge: the company’s free On the Mon-ey programme helps people developclear and specific plans that are real-istic, achievable and inspiring.

Be ready tomake changesDAVID MALHERBE

There is something special to anewyear, somethinglike,“Igetanother chance to start anew.”

Yet to make the new year a bet-ter year than the previous one, wecannot do everythingthe same as beforeand then expect a bet-ter outcome. There-fore, if last year wasnot what you hopedfor, then don’t onlyhope for a better yearto come, start to planwhat you will do dif-ferently. If you carryonthesamewayasbe-fore, expect the sameoutcome.

We need to change our ways inorder to improve and grow ourbusinesses. So what will you dodifferentlyduringthisyear?Haveyou taken stock of last year so thatyou can know where to improveor eliminate?

No matter what kind of busi-ness you’re in or what your situa-tion may be, I want to encourageyou to not only look at the circum-stances but to also reflect on yourpersonal life.

In Proverbs 4:23 we read: “Becareful how you think; your lifeis shaped by your thoughts.”

The way to a better tomorrowand new year, starts with the waywe think. If you think you arebeaten, you are. If you think youcan, you will.

Haveyoueverdonesomestrate-gic planning for your life or busi-ness? My experience is that most

people live from day today with the motto ofwhat goes around, comes around.

They have no plan ofwhat they would like toachieve with their livesor businesses.

To be successful, youneed to plan and thenwork for it. You cannotjust drift through lifeand vainly hope thatsomehow success will

catch up with you.An old proverb teaches us that

“rolling stones gather no moss.”Unless you plan it, you are unlike-ly to succeed.

Let us learn from the past yearand stretch forward to this newyear doing as the Apostle Paulwrites in Philipians 3: 13 and 14“I forget what is behind, stretch-ing out to the things ahead. I runtoward the goal, so that I can winthe prise.”

Premier 3-day trailrun eventoffers just the ‘right mix’Chantel“Hot Pants”Nien-aber secured her veryfirst AfricanX victory onher second attempt in2014 when she and fellowtrail runnerKatya Soggotof Team ProNutro Ladiescompleted the spectacu-lar threedaysof trail run-ning inacombinedtimeof08:11:58.

“Katya and I were bothoverwhelmedbyourvictoryin 2014,” saidNienaber. “Weobviously hoped that wewouldwin, butweknewthatthe competition would betough, as it always is at theAfricanX. Thankfully wewere both feeling strongthroughout the race andmanaged to take first posi-tion on all three stages.”South Africa’s premier

three-daystage trail run, theProNutro AfricanX Trail-run presented by New Bal-ance, returns to themajesticElginGrabouwregionin theWestern Cape the weekendof 13 to 15 March 2015.“The event drawsmanyof

the country’s top competi-tors,makingitabenchmarkevent. Event organisers cre-ate just the right mix, theroute is not too challenging, making it ideal for newcom-ers as well. It has a fantastic‘trail-family’, vibe. The din-ingexperiencesgivepartici-pants an opportunity to in-teractwith each other. I spe-cifically enjoy getting to see some ofthe awesome shots that were takenduring the stage. These are usuallyplayed after dinner,” addsNienaber. Her top five tips for eventnewcom-

ers are as follows:1. Have a plan B: No trail runner

enters a three-day stage race with apartner, with the intention of notcompleting it together. Unfortunate-

ly things don’t always pan out theway in which intended. Discuss theslight possibility of one of younot be-ing able to complete the race.Havinga plan B can help avoid hard feelingsafterwards.2. Communicate: If youare strug-

gling at any stage and feel that yourpartner needs to ease up on the pace, you need to be open and honest. This

will help ensure that youboth complete the threedays together (and remainfriends).3. Warm up: Always

warm up properly eachday before you start run-ning. It is also very impor-tant to stretch and mas-sage your muscles aftereach stage.4. Stream-line your

hydration-pack: I washorrified to see one of myfriend’s packs. She had afully-equipped emergencykit, from extra nutrition(dated back to who knowswhen), toamedicalkit thatFlorence Nightingalecould work wonders with.Only carry what you need!5. Foot care is essen-

tial: There are two secretsto avoid blisters, firstlyyou literallyneed to tough-enyourfeetup(sorrythosepedicures will have to be athing of the past for now).Remedy: file the tips ofyour nails lightly with anail file along the contourof your nail (perpendicu-lar to the direction inwhich you would conven-tionallyuse anail file), try-ing to round the tip of thenail, keeping them flushwith your toes. Your sockwill then not be inclined tolift the tip, which can cre-ate blisters.Teamwork forms an es-

sential part of this leadingstage race, with participants havingto rely on each other’s experience, strength and expertise in order tocomplete the route. The three routes have been

plannedinsuchawaythat thepartic-ipants will have the opportunity totackle a different breath-taking sce-nic route each day, allowing them toenjoy the full beautyof theOverberg.
