Torrential rains resulted in water dam-age and surface flooding in about 10 hous-es in Scottsville, Kraaifontein.Large parts of Aandblom and Gray-

maur streets were completely floodedalong with an entire soccer field adjoin-ing the streets.Heavy rains broke out last night and

residents in Graymaur Street woke tofind their houses under water.“We spent thewholemorning sweeping

the water from our kitchens and livingrooms,” said resident Lionel Smit.

Several residents suffered water dam-age to their furniture. Residents such asVincent de Kok and Nettie Joubert weretrapped in their homes for hours and hadtowait for thewater levels outside to dropbefore they could leave.According to residents this is a long-

standing problem that occurs each yearwith seasonal rains.Ward councillor Brenda Hansen said

that the flooding in the abovementionedstreets are a direct result of the blockeddrains at the nearby retention dam.“Cityworkers are currently busy clear-

ing these drains, and water levels arebusy falling,” she said.

The war against the drug trade inKraaifontein is intensifying on a dai-ly basis.

Not only is the Kraaifontein police cur-rently driving a campaign to involve thecommunitywith a renewed trust in the po-lice, but they are also revisiting old cases.In doing so, according to station com-

mander Brig Gerda van Niekerk, all theopen dockets relating to the known druglords in Kraaifontein are currently beingfine-combed in an attempt to present themanew for prosecution.“In addition tomobilising the communi-

ty to work with us, we have undercoverteams and surveillance operations inplace to get to the kingpins,” she said ata recent meeting of the Abba Network inKraaifontein.

Drug lords known“We all know who the drug lords in

Kraaifontein are and times are changing.Years ago nobody dared say their names,but today we name and shame them.“Most of our current arrests are of the

runners, and these youngsters end up tak-ing the rap for their bosses,” she said,hence the new operations.According to statistics released, Kraai-

fontein is oneof themost crime-riddenare-as in the Western Cape.A staggering 2020 drug related crimes

were recorded in 2012, an increase of 400more than the previous year and morethan double the case-load in Khayelitsha.In 2004 there were only 245 drug-related

arrests.Van Niekerk again encouraged the com-

munity to come forward with informationto assist the police with their operations.“Our children are dying and there is too

much pain. In the end, if we succeed in tak-ing the need away, the drug lords won’thave a lucrative business any more,”shesaid.

A fire at a house in Scottsdene left six peo-ple homeless last week Thursday.The fire broke out in Jacaranda Road at

about 09:00 on Thursday morning.Four emergency vehicles were dis-

patched from the Kraaifontein, Bracken-fell and Bellville fire stations to the sceneand upon arrival firefighters found by-standers and neighbours attempting to ex-tinguish the fire with a garden hose.The building suffered structural damag-

es. It is suspected that the fire was causeddue to an electrical fault.

Some 14 children supported by the AmyBiehl Foundation picked up tennis racketsfor the first time at Milnerton Tennis Clublast week.The children were driven to the club tostart their weekly tennis sessions on Thurs-day 1 August thanks to Phumza Nojekwa(sports co-ordinator) andEasyNofemela (as-sistant driver).The children aged six to 10 years old took

part in warm-up games, ball skills, as wellas learning some technique and tennisgames with coaches Elly Shearman andFrancoisDuPreez, and juniorvolunteerSer-gio.This is the start of a programme atMilner-ton Tennis Club to work with the Amy BiehlFoundation to provide children with the op-portunity to learn about and enjoy the sportof tennis. Tennis is often predominantly of-fered to those fortunate enough to come fromhigher socio-economic backgrounds. Thesport offers players an easy way to keep fit,learn co-ordination, discipline as well as tosocialise. It is a sport that can be played forlife. Moses Adams, originally from Milner-ton, was triumphant in the Red Bull Un-locked at Moses Mabhida Stadium inDurban recently.

In a field of the country’s best profes-sional skaters and in an area that skatingis usually prohibited, Moses Adamsfought off some of the best skaters in thecountry.

In a hotly-contested final againstDlamini Dlamini, Jean-Marc Johannes,Braxton Haines and Yann Horowitz onsmooth, polished concrete surfaces, Ad-ams impressed the judges to win the first-ever Red Bull Unlocked.

Adams proved throughout the competi-tion that he was hungry for the win bylanding some of the most insane tricks ofthe day. He fought off the competition

with his sensational final run which in-cluded a varial heel flip, a nollie flip anda frontside flip.

“We never get to skate at somewherelike this. The surface is so nice to skateon – no cracks or rocks and just sosmooth,” remarked Adams.

“I felt really comfortable today and justworked on getting to the finals. Dlaminiwas really skating well and I’m just gladI did my best and was able to win.”

The one-day event, unique in the factthat it gives participants access to an ar-ea where their sport would be ordinarilybe prohibited, was judged by some of themost esteemed skaters in the communi-ty, Andrew Morck, Ken-Rae James andeditor at Session Skateboarding Maga-zine, Brendan Body.

Dié geleentheid is Dinsdag in die Kraai-fontein-stadsaal aangebied deur die Kraai-fontein-polisie en Abba-netwerk, ’n plaasli-ke organisasie wat dwelmverslaafdes in dieKraaifontein-, Brackenfell- en Durbanville-areas bystaan.

Felicity Dirks, ’n ma van Wallacedene, hetvertel hoe sy slegs twee weke gelede probeerhet om haar oudste dogter te vermoor deur

slaappille in haar koffie te gooi.“Dwelms het ’n monster van my kind ge-

maak. Ek kon nie meer nie. Sy het my huwe-lik opgemors en dwelms aan haar twee jon-gers susters aangebied. Alles in die huis isal gesteel en ek het nie eers meer genoegkomberse om ons warm te hou nie. Ek wouhaar doodmaak en sou eerder tronk toe gaanvoordat ek toegekyk het hoe dwelms mykind vernietig,” het sy in trane aan die ge-hoor vertel.

Dié 26-jarige dogter is intussen opgeneemin ’n rehabilitasiesentrum.

Renette Mauply het vertel van die driejaar wat haar seun ’n verslaafde was.

“Die eerste jaar was hel en ek het baie,baie gehuil. Dis moeilik om die trauma te be-skryf wat dwelmverslawing in ’n huishou-ding bring,” het sy gesê en ’n pleidooi gerigtot rehabilitasie-instansies om ouers te res-pekteer wat deur die proses saam met hulkinders gaan.

Die Learn2Live-uitreikaksie van die Dur-banville-Familiekerk in Sonstraalhoogtehet vyf crèches in Wallacedene in Kraaifon-tein opgeknap met die hulp van die kerk sekleingroepe.

Learn2Live is ’n bedieningsorganisasievan die kerk en fokus op die ontwikkelingvan arm gemeenskappe deur middel van

basiese opleiding en ekonomiese bemagti-ging.

Altesame 70 mense van kleingroepe is inspanne verdeel om die vyf crèches op teknap.

Die crèches is uitgeverf, herstelwerk isgedoen, speelgoed is uitsorteer, skoon ge-maak en die crèches is verfraai.

Die vyf crèches is Faith, Siphamandla,Zamakuhle, Ebenezer en Anathemba.

Volgens Melanie Labuschagne van Le-arn2Live is die crèches almal werklik be-hoeftig en is daar veral ’n groot behoefteaan speelgoed, komberse, matrasse, skoon-maakmiddels en toerusting.

Een span het die crèches ontsmet en be-spuit met toerusting wat deur die Cape Gar-den Centre voorsien is.

Twee spanne het by Learn2Live se oplei-dingsentrum in Wallacedene speelgoed uit-sorteer en houtplankies met hakies ge-maak waaraan die kinders hul sakke kanophang.

Die projek is moontlik gemaak met geldwat die kerk se kleingroepe in Junie metverskeie projekte hiervoor ingesamel het.

Alle verf, dekor en ander gereedskap ishiermee aangekoop. Elke crèche het ook ’nskoonmaakstel ontvang.

Die gemeentelede het hope kombersiesgeskenk, wat dan tussen die crèches ver-deel is.

“Nadat die werk afgehandel is, het elkespan vir sy crèche se prinsipaal en haar fa-milie gebid en het hulle die gebou en diekinders aan die Here opgedra.

Jo-Ann wants to inspire ‘angels’She’s beautiful and successful and exactlythe kind of role model young angels need.

This basically sums up former Miss SAand Glambition presenter, Jo-Ann Strauss.Jo-Ann will deliver 2013’s special Rachel’sAngels lecture at Malibu High School.

What makes this third annual speech sospecial is that Jo-Ann will be addressingyouths from the community in which sheherself has her roots.

The lecture is planned for Friday 16 Au-gust at the high school in Blue Downs.

“The lecture is an initiative by theRachel’s Angels mentorship programme tostrengthen its mission aimed at enhancingexcellence in education,” a report from theorganisation said.

The unique programme partners Grade 11and 12 learners from previously disadvan-taged schoolswith senior students fromStel-lenbosch University.

“Orginally from Blackheath, close to BlueDowns, Jo-Ann has expressed delight at be-ing invited to deliver the lecture at a commu-nity that is close to her heart,” the reportsaid.

She has big shoes to fill. Former oratorsof the lecture include Trevor Manuel (2012),Minister of Planning, and Jonathan Jansen,University of Free State Vice-Chancellor(2011).

Jo-Ann’s topic will be “Our youth and thequest for excellence”. She will be sharingher own life experience to show the young-sters how studying and hard work bringabout great personal change.

She says: “I am extremely honoured to beinvited to speak after incredible luminaries

like Trevor Manuel and Professor Jansen.“I amalso excited to be speaking atMalibu

High School, which is a few hundred metresfromwhere I grewupandpart of a communi-ty which hasmademewho I am today. Shar-ing one’s story is always a privilege and onewhich I take very seriously. I look forwardto the event.”

Jo-Ann, a former television presenter, isalso a producer and entrepreneur (she hostsand produces her Glambition with Jo-AnnStrauss on e.tv).

She also does a lot of charity work and ispassionate about mentoring and nurturingyoung talent.

The Rachel’s Angels organisation wasfounded in 2007 by Media24 to provide men-torship to Gr 11s and 12s by students of Stel-lenbosch University. They wished to createa culture of excellence inhigh schools acrossthe Western Cape.

There are currently 20 schools and 140learners from areas such as the Cape Flats,Malmesbury, Stellenbosch, Grabouw andGansbaai involved in the programme.

“The programme includes workshops on,inter alia, study techniques and life skills,regular campus visits, attending lecturesand being exposed to the world of businessthrough entrepreneurial initiatives, such asa market day,” the report said.

Kerriepasta’n móét viruitstaandegeur in potEk het onlangs die voorreg gehadom ’n beoordelaar by ’n potjiekos-kompetisie tewees. Hier en daar hetdie kuiery die reëls vandie kompeti-sie in die rookwolke laat verdwyn,maar aan gees het daar beslis nieontbreek nie!

South Africa’s homes – from flats and clusters to stand-alone houses and residential estates – demand 17% of the electricity used in ourcountry. But on weekdays, between 5pm and 9pm, this demand increases and peaks at 35%, a huge jump that puts severe strain on the

power supply.

Why does this happen?

We arrive home from work around 5pm,Monday to Friday.

The first thing we do is switch on the lights, television, our electrical space heaters, followed by the oven, the microwave and the washingmachine or dishwasher. We also run hot water in the kitchen and take a bath or shower – with the geyser tucked away in the ceilingworking hard to heat the water.

Millions of us follow this evening routine at the same time, which means South Africa’s households use more than one third of theelectricity consumed in the country between 5pm and 9pm, on weekdays.

As the demand increases, Eskom does all it can including running some emergency power stations during the day, to balance supply anddemand. This winter we need to continue with power station maintenance and the system will be tighter during the peak period from

5pm to 9pm.

What can you do to help keep the lights on this winter?

Three simple things:

1. Switch off your electrical element geyser between 5pm and 9pm; this appliance uses the most electricity of all in the home, and canaccount for up to 50% on your electricity bill

2. Don’t switch on your space heater between 5pm and 9pm. This appliance is energy-intensive and can account for up to 16% onyour monthly electricity bill, instead, dress warmly, switch on a gas heater, and use a hot water bottle and blankets to keep warm

3. Switch off your pool pump between 5pm and 9pm; this appliance uses up to 11% on your electricity bill.

An interest in stones and rocks as a childin Namibia, a book she read years ago andthen finally, a TV programme she watchedon Stonehenge, the prehistoric monumentin England, sparked an epiphany for localresident, Faith Booysen (69).

Faith realised there was a direct link be-tween the way Stonehenge was built andthe Egyptian solar calendar. These calen-dars are the origin of the calendar we usetoday.

She then wrote her first non-fictionbook,Stonehenge: Times Square BC, on hertheoryof thepurposeof Stonehenge,whichhas been debated for hundreds of years.

One need only to Google Stonehenge andits purpose to realise its many theories– from being a burial ground to a place ofhealing, none of which has been proved.

Faith has been honoured with interna-tional recognition by being invited to theLondon Book Festival in January 2012. Shereceived an honourable mention in thegeneral non-fiction category for her firstbook.

She later discovered a link between thecalendars in Britain and the Sphinx Tem-ple in Egypt and her latest book, followed.

This book is titledThe Sphinx and Stone-henge connection – 4 500 year old mysterysolved.

The book was published in March thisyear. Once again she was invited to theParis Book Festival in May, where sheagain received an honourable mention inthe general non-fiction category.

She visited Stonehenge in England in1994. “Surrounding the Stonehenge monu-ment, is a circle of 56 postholes,which onceheld wooden posts.

“Today the circle is referred to as TheAubrey Postholes. I found this interesting– just four more than 52, the number ofweeks in a year. I realised that ancientswould have divided the circle in four, us-ing four of the postholes.”

“Each of the four quarters now repre-sented a season of 13 weeks. At sunriseeach day, a marker would be placed infront of each post until there were sevenmarkers in line with each of the 52 posts– 13 in each season.

“On the last day of the year, a markerwould be placed in the centre giving a totalof 365, the exact number of days in a year.

“I realised the circle of 56 postholes rep-resented a precise solar calendar,” she ex-plained – this calendar is similar to theChichen Itza Pyramid in Mexico.

She went on to discover a further six pre-cise solar calendars in Europe.

Then, after her first book was published,she discovered that three of the temples onthe Giza Plateau were also solar calendars,hence her second book, The Sphinx andStonehenge Connection.

Cummins, or Ann Jangle, as she’s knownon stage, is one of Cape Town’s folk bluesgems.The songstress paid her dues singing

back-up for SouthAfricanblues legend, PietBotha and performing with Akkedis fromtime to time, before starting her ownproject.“That’s kindawhere the journey started,”

Ann says. In 2011, she started playing withbassist, Nozomé Brink.At first Ann and Nozomé would just get

together to play two-piece, and before toolong they were joined by guitarist, GerhardCoetzee and drummer, Matthew Raven,Ann explains.

Music styleAnn says it’s tricky to describe the

group’s sound. “We touch on somanydiffer-ent styles,” she says.“We’ve got an old, 40s-invoking, hip-shak-

ing, bit of a rockabilly twist, type of style,and then we also do a lot of more dramatic,more folksy, hectic vocals,” she says, add-ing: “It’s very hard to explain.”Ann Jangle has recorded a song for the

Blues Breakers album, a project by VH Mu-sic and Publishing, which sees some ofSouth Africa’s biggest blues artists payingtribute to the history of blues.“It’s a huge privilege to play on the same

album as Albert Frost and Black Cat Bonesand Piet Botha,” Ann says.“These are the guys I used to just stand

at the bottom of the stage and drool over,you know what I mean,” she says.The album is set to be launched in Cape

Town in September, after it’s official launchat the Fellowship of Rock and Roll festival

in Mozambique.Ann Jangle is also busy working on a sec-

ond album and plans to shoot the groupsmusic video soon.Their debut album,Acoustic Archive, was

released in 2012 and was the CD that soldthe most copies at Table Mountain BluesSummit 2012. They are hoping to release thenew album by the end of this year.

The legendary English rock/pop act,Mike and theMechanics, are gearingup to hit South African shores and

are set to perform live in Cape Town forthe first time.Band leader and founder of the group,

Mike Rutherford, is no stranger to CapeTown and says he regularly visits the city.Rutherford says he is particularly fond

of the Cape’s “outdoorsy” atmosphere andloves the wide open spaces and even ownsa home in Cape Town.In fact, while visiting here last year, he

even completedhis firstArgusCycleTour.

Living YearsAlso while in Cape Town last year, Ru-

therford re-recorded the band’s No 1 sin-gle, “The Living Years”, a song he says heis most proud of.The songwas recorded for the 25th anni-

versary version of The Living Years andfeatures Cape Town ensemble, Isango.Rutherford explains that he was intro-

duced to the group by a friend and pointsout that while they are relatively un-known in South Africa, they have per-formed often in Europe.Mike and the Mechanics had been rela-

tively quiet over past years until Ruther-ford, who initially started the band as aside project while in Genesis, decided tobreathe new life into it.Rutherford explains that he has always

enjoyed songwriting and wasn’t ready togive up and Mike and the Mechanics wasa good vehicle to be writing for.Having lost vocalist Paul Young in 2000

and having other vocalists in between,Mike and theMechanics released a newal-

bum, The Road, in 2011 with AndrewRoachford and TimHowar singing vocals,Luke Juby on keyboards, Gary Wallis ondrums, and Anthony Drennan on guitarand bass.Rutherford says there are plans for the

release of a ‘best of’ anniversary album.

Mike and the Mechanics played in SouthAfrica (in 1993), Rutherford sayshe is look-ing forward to performing in the city.He says fans can expect to hear all the

old Mike and the Mechanics favourites,along with one or two new songs and evena few Genesis classics.As part of the concert, the band will be

supporting the M-Net Naledi Children’sLiteracy Project. A portion of ticket saleswill be donated to the project and audience

members are being asked to bring alongbooks to donate, which will be distributedto school libraries.

CharityRutherford says it makes sense to use a

big concert for charity and says theNalediChildren’s Literacy Project was a goodchoice as it is a charity thatM-Net alreadyworks with.He points out that as far as his personal

charity work goes, he tends to lean moretowards supporting organisations thatdeal with children.Mike and the Mechanics will be per-

hierdie seisoen die tuig gaan neerlê, het ’nleeue-aandeel gehad in die Durbies se wel-slae van die afgelope paar seisoene. Nadatdie Durbanvillers die WP vroeër vanjaar indie nasionale Gemeenskapsbeker-klubkam-pioenskapstoernooi verteenwoordig het, hethulle tans ook nog ’n buitekans om die WPse Superligatitel in te palm.
