this. We also demand a response on theabove mentioned concerns within the peri-od of 21working days,” one of the organisers

told station and cluster commanders Briga-diers Gerda van Niekerk and Moses Mame-la, who received thememorandumon behalfof Jula.According to Myolisi Magibisela, the

youth representative on theward committeefor Bloekombos, the crime situation in thisarea has become untenable.One particular new subculture concerns

them more than anything else at this stage.“In the last four years we have experi-

enced the rise of a new breed of youth gangswho terrorise our schools and community.Learners are powerless and even teacherswho try to stop them become targets,” hesays.

According to Magibisela, three youthswere murdered in Masibambane HighSchool in recent months.“Wedon’t knowhowmanygangs there are

orwhatmotivates themorhow this newsub-culture came to be. They are not in any wayassociated to the number gangs, but drugtrade seems to be an activity,” he adds.“It has disturbed learning at our schools

in such a way that some students fear com-ing to school. Some of these gangs launch at-tacks on their ‘enemies’ during schoolhours, trying to gain access to the schoolgrounds, or wait outside the school yard fortheir ‘targets’ to come out.”

On 18 May, TygerBurger reported onthe murders of two youths in Walla-cedene, bordering Kraaifontein.Adelaine Bruiners and another

teenager were visiting friends.One of these friends was a target to

a gang, and they were attacked.The wooden bungalow the girls

were sitting in,was bombarded withrocks and then set alight.The youngsters were trapped in-

side.Magibisela says although some of

these youngsters do manage to gettheir hands on firearms, they willfight with anything available tothem.BrigadierMamela saidmanyof the

with much vigour on Thursday.Especially the younger children were

captivated by a talk about the origins ofYouth Day, when an uprising that began inSoweto on 16 June 1976 spread countrywideto profoundly change the political land-scape in South Africa.Several factors triggered the uprising

ranging from the introduction of Bantu ed-ucation along with the rise of the South Af-rican Students Organisation (Saso).But it was only in 1974 when Afrikaans

wasmade compulsory alongside English asa medium of instruction that high schoolstudents from Soweto began to organisethemselves.On 16 June 1976 somewhere between 5000

and 10 000 studentsmarched to the OrlandoStadium in Soweto, to demonstrate againstthis policy.On their way to the stadium they were

met with heavily armed police forces whofired tear-gas and later live ammunition onthe demonstrating students.Hundreds died

on that fateful day – estimates of 180 weregiven by the police but it was later reportedthat almost 700 died.Youth Day is celebrated in memory of all

these youngsters who lost their lives.Organised by the City of Cape Town,

Yeshua Covenant Church, Logos Assemblyand supported by the Kraaifontein police,youth from the Kraaifontein area, whichincludes Bloekombos, Wallacedene andScottsdene, were transported to the venue.Representatives from the health depart-

mentwere on hand to provide freeHIV test-ing, while various activities took placethroughout the day.Various performances by local artists

and dancers delighted the children, fol-lowed by a scrumptious lunch.During an afternoon sports tournament

senior and junior soccer and netball teamshad the chance to challenge one another.“Despite theweather,we reached our tar-

get of getting 1000 youths together and thecelebration was a huge success. Our youthand children are priceless assets and futureleaders of this country and it’s the responsi-bility of this country to prioritise and in-vest in them at any cost,” said ReverendSamuel Dean from Yeshua CovenantChurch.

“As a youngwoman in your twen-ties your expectations of mar-riage are very unrealistic. And

when those expectations fail us, depres-sion is often a result,” says well-knownlocal gospel singer Crystal Swanson.

A book authored by award winningjournalist Sisanda Nkoala, telling thestory behind Swanson’s career, was re-leased on 1 April at a packed venue atCentre for the Book in Cape Town.

“Ek is gebore en getoë in Belhar en het se-wesbydieSekondêreSkoolExcelsior enver-skeie provinsiale en internasionale spanneafgerig, terwyl ek nog steeds by ’n finansiëleinstelling gewerk het. Ek was voorheen byNedbank en is tans by Ou Mutual, een vandie borge van die klub,” sê hy.

Van die spelers wat hy onder hande gehadhet, is Justin Geduld, Cheslin Kolbe, EdwinZass en Dennis Cox in die WP se o.18-span.

Hy was ook die afrigter van die SA sewes-studentespan van 2009 tot 2011, wat die Cen-trale 7’s in Parys enMorokko gewen het. Hyhet ook Kenia Shujaa 7’s afgerig, wat dieAfrikabeker gewen het.

“Excelsior sal my altyd na aan die hart lê,want ek het baie sukses daar behaal. Ek hetook deur Afrika gereis en het afrigting inlande soos Uganda en Kenia gedoen.”Belhar speel in die A-kompetisie van die

WP se Superliga en die klub se sterkpunt issy hardlooprugby. Die klub spog met lojaleondersteuners wat weekliks die span komondersteun, wat bydra tot die span se suk-ses. Belhar het ook al Blitsbokke opgelewer.“Tans oefen vyf klubspelers by die WP se

amateurspan. Vanjaar is my eerste jaar ashoofafrigter van die A-span en my doelwitis om ’n sterkwenkultuur indieklub te skep,wat met dissipline, harde werk en waag-moed gepaardgaan.Ons is nognie daarwaarons wil wees nie, maar hopelik sal alles inplek val,” het Weir gesê.Belhar het nie uitblinkers nie, maar die

span in sy geheel dra by tot die klub se suk-ses. Die klub het ’n paar sleutelspelers ver-loor en hopelik sal die jong spelers hul voete

vind.“Ons gebruik hoofsaaklik spelers uit Bel-

har en omgewing en doen ’n beroep op hulleom by die klub se speelstyl in te koop en bydie klub te bly. Belhar se uiteindelik doel isom in die Gouebekerkompetisie, voorheendie Community Cup, te speel, sodat ons ta-lent op televisie gewys kan word.

“In ons wedstryd teen Tygerberg hetmeeras 1 000 toeskouers kom kyk en dink net watkan gebeur met televisiedekking,” sê hy.Omdat die klub ’n gemeenskapsklub is,

probeer hulle om meer by die omliggendeskole betrokke te raak, maar wil dit op ’ngroter skaal doen. “Diemeeste van die afrig-ters het ’n voldagwerk, wat verhoed dat hul-le by skole betrokke kan raak.“Virmy is dit belangrik dat die jeug inBel-

har moet opkyk na die spelers, sodat hullekan sien daar is beter keuses as bendes endwelms. Wanneer ons Saterdae op die velddraf, gaan dit vir die spelers nie net oor die80minute nie, maar jy is ’n ambassadeur virjou gemeenskap,” sê Weir.
