Lt.-kol. André Traut van die provinsi-ale polisie se mediakantoor het bevestigdat drie mans van onderskeidelik 17, 25en 30 jaar oud om sowat 19:10 raakge-skiet is toe ’n onbekende verdagte ophulle losgebrand het.

“Die voorval het plaasgevind op diehoek van Yvonne- en Williestraat en dieomstandighede rondom die skieteryword nog deur die polisie ondersoek.

“ ’n Saak van poging tot moord is ge-open maar geen arrestasies is nog ge-maak nie,” sê Traut.

kend.Hoewel die polisie in dié stadium nie

Royden sal Saterdag by die Kraaifon-tein-begraafplaas ter ruste gelê word.

enfell made headlines last yearwhen he publicly challenged thecurrent legislation, which allowsfathers only three days paid familyresponsibility leave when their ba-by is born.

In terms of the Constitution, hesubmitted a petition to the Nation-al Council on 3 July 2014, askingthat working men be given 10 dayspaternity leave.He appeared before the Select

Committee on Petitions and ap-proached every member of Parlia-ment to urge them to draft a newBill to this affect.

’n hofsaak by die Suid-Gautengse hoogge-regshof in Johannesburg aanhangig ge-maak teen ses skolewat godsdiens beoefen.Ogod het gevra dat dit ongrondwetlik ver-klaar word en sekere godsdienspraktykedeur die hof verbied word.“Ons wil nie die Grondwet verander nie,

maar vra bloot dat om dít wat reeds daarinstaan, te implementeer,” het hy gesê.Dié saak het in 2008 begin toe sy drieling,

There was a buzz of youthful enthusiasmat the University of the Western Capeon Saturday when they hosted the third

annual Youth Indaba.Hosted by UWC’s HIV and Aids pro-

gramme and the City of Cape Town’s depart-ment of social development (youth develop-

ment and early childhood development di-rectorate), 600 children from around theprovince participated in a programme thatsought solutions to many of the problemsthat they face in their communities.

UWC media officer Aidan Van Den Heeversaid the event aimed to reduce risk in troub-led communities.

“The children from these communitiesform part of the Life Skills Healthy Living

Photo-Voice Project, facilitated by UWC’speer educators under the supervision of theCity of Cape Town and UWC staff,” he said.

“It offers high school pupils the opportuni-ty to look at their community from behindthe camera, teaching them basic photogra-phy skills and creating awareness of impor-tant social and community issues.

“This event provided a voice for youth asfar as community issues are concerned, al-

lowing them to become agents of changewithin their respective communities.

“It offered a formalised space for youthfrom around Cape Town to discuss the socialproblems they experience in their communi-ties.”

While serious issues were the focus of theevent, entertainment was also on the billand a highlight was the performance by pop-ular singer Jimmy Nevis.

Hollywood het verlede week in Brac-kenfell geland!

Vervaardigers van die nuwe Afri-kaanse romantiese komedie, Hollywood inmy Huis, het leerders en personeel by dieHoërskool Brackenfell, waar groot dele vandie fliek verlede jaar verfilm is, Donderdag-oggend trakteer op ’n vertoning van die filmin die skoolsaal.

Die langverwagte film word Vrydag in te-aters oor die land heen bekendgestel, en diewoord op straat is dat dit ’n groot opskud-ding gaan veroorsaak.

As die bekende fliekresensent Leon VanNierop die film ’n 8-ster-gradering gegeehet, geeTygerBurger dit 10 uit 10 – kolskoot!

Nie net is dit een van die snaaksste Afri-kaanse flieks wat jy in ’n lang tyd sal siennie, maar ook ’n tere liefdesverhaal met ’nsterk boodskap: die verwesenliking van joudrome is soms nader as wat jy dink.

En boonop is die film op eie bodem in ver-skeie noordelike voorstede verfilm. Die sto-rie speel hom af teen die agtergrond van ’nmatriekafskeid in 2004. ’n Gewone tiener-meisie, Jana van Tonder, wat aan die “ver-keerde kant van die spoorlyn” woon, wordgeïnspireer om haar eie rooitapyt-oomblikte skep, nadat sy op televisie sien hoe Char-lize Theron haar Oscar-beeldjie wen. Dieverhaal bevat ’n goeie dosis romanse, nos-talgie en selfs ’n tikkie hartseer met die reg-te balans en is ’n lewendige komedie watjou lank gaan bybly. By die geleentheid hetAndré Pretorius, skoolhoof by HoërskoolBrackenfell, gesê dat dit ’n plesier en voor-reg was vir dié skool om deel te wees vandie produksie, wat ook sowat 200 plaaslikeleerlinge in rolle as filmekstras gebruik het.Dylan Voogt, mede-vervaardiger, sê dieskoolterrein en atmosfeer by die skool was

die perfekte omgewing vir die draaiboekvan die film.

Christea Visser, wat die rol van Jana ver-tolk, sê dit was ’n uitdaging om weer ’nskoolkind te word. “Om weer ’n skooluni-form te dra en na daardie tyd van jou leween na die dinge van daardie tydperk terugte keer, was ’n groot uitdaging. Maar dit hetmy baie gehelp om lewe in my karakter teblaas.”

Dit het Corné van Rooyen, skrywer en re-gisseur, nege jaar geneem om die AFDA-kortfilm, Hollywood in my Huis, in ’n vol-lengte-rolprent te omskep.

Adecision by the City of Cape Town councilon 2 June to shift the delegation for decisi-ons about traffic calming to Transport forCape Town (TCT), could be re-considered.Gerhard Fourie said in his

chairperson’s report at themonthly meeting of Subcouncil7 (Koeberg) last Monday that thedelegation to consider and ap-prove traffic calming measureswill in future resort with TCT.“We are awaiting the admini-

strative protocol in terms ofwhich applications – those onthe waiting lists and new ones –will be dealt with in future,” he said.Fourie told TygerBurger subcouncil ma-

nagers will meet this week to discuss the

way forward.“In the past, traffic calming was a delega-

tion of the subcouncil. Theward councillor,who serves the community, follo-wed a processwith theward com-mittee, after which a recommen-dation was made in terms of thetraffic calming policy,” he said.“Wewant residents to take part

in public participation and for usto be able to oversee the processof traffic calming,” he said.The new draft traffic calming

policy will soon be circulated forpublic input, he said. In terms ofthis new draft policy, traffic cal-

ming is only recommended near facilitiessuch as schools, public open spaces, shop-ping centres and retirement homes.

Een hiervan – ’n hartsaak vir haar,sê tannie Elna – is die Blankets for Blik-kies-projek wat deur haar en ’n vrien-din, Sandra Marais van Stellenbosch,begin is.

TannieElna verduidelik: “Ons leer ’ngroep van 25 vroue van Blikkiesdorpnaby Delft om te brei. Ons is ’n helegroep wat hieraan saamwerk.”

Die groep maak onder meer mussies,slaapsokkies en truie, maar kombersegeniet nou voorrang.

Kombersprojek“My vriendin Sandra het hierdie kom-

bersprojek begin nadat sy gehoor het datdaar verlede jaar mense dood is van diekoue in die ‘blikhuise’ daar.

“Dit raak vreeslik koud in daardiestrukture,” sê tannie Elna.

“Nou leer ons die vroue om die komber-se te brei.”

Sy sêwanneer hulle Vrydae naBlikkies-dorp vertrek, neem hulle al wat beskikba-re wol is saam.

Tans werk hulle aan ’n klomp kombersevir Mandeladag.

“Die vroue kan elk die eerste komberswathulle brei, vir eie gebruikhou.Die ver-dere komberse gaan dan aan behoeftigemense wat hulle identifiseer.

“Die oorhandiging word opMandeladagin die saal van die Hoërskool Linden inDelft gedoen,” sê sy.

“Sê vir die mense ons doen ‘double knit-ting’. Ons maak staat op allerhande dradewol, ook vier-draad, en gaan alles gebruikin die Mandeladag-projek.”

Voorts bestuur die tannie ook ’n sosia-le klub indié gemeenskap, is sy lid vanetli-ke boekklubs en ook ’n komiteelid van ’nvoetslaanklub.

“Haar talente is nimmereindigend en sybly besig!” lag Alma.

Toe TygerBurger tannie Elna self oor aldié ander projekte wil uitvra, sê sy: “Nee,my kind, jammer, jy sal maar weer moetbel. Ek móét ongelukkig nou gaan.”

thanks to a joint effort by the Tygerberg andBellville Rotary Clubs.At the commencement of the currentRota-

ry year, Barry Evans, president of the Bell-ville Rotary Club, suggested the four clubsinCapeTown’s northern suburbs –Bellville,Tygerberg, Durbanville and Oostenberg –should join forces and start working toge-ther on various proposed projects, share ide-as, resources, and generally support oneanother in a greater effort to benefit theircommunities, saidReneLesch, public relati-ons officer of the Tygerberg Rotary Club.

This proposition culminated in regularquarterly meetings to which the presidentsof the four clubs are invited to discuss andshare ideas.

BrainstormingThe Rotary Club of Tygerberg then identi-

fied the need for an ablution facility at thelook-out point on top of the hill at the Tyger-berg Nature Reserve.“After obtaining quotations as to the cost

of this venture, we approached the Bellvilleclub for financial assistance. They agreed ina flash and so the wheels were set in moti-on,” said Lesch.“As permission was required from the Ci-

ty of Cape Town as to exactly where the toi-lets would be placed, the necessary planshad to be submitted for approval.“We were fortunate and very grateful to

the architect,ArthurCraik,whovoluntarilydrew up all the required plans at no charge

to us. We are so apprecia-tive of the professionaland efficient service herendered,” Lesch said.At long last, during the

fourth quarter of 2014,everything was in placeand work on the projectbegan.“On completion, it was

discovered that thewheelchair ramp wasmuch too steep, so thestaff working at the reser-ve came to the rescue.They promptly rolled uptheir sleeves, took spadesin hand and dug out andin no time had adaptedthe ramp to a suitablegradient,” she said.Also, when they appro-

“The real reason of life is to see whatwe can do with the bodies we were given.How far are we willing to go? I reallylook forward to the unknown challen-ges that the rest of my life will throwat me. It’s what makes it exciting.”

Simone, a Cape Town Casual Dayambassador, issued the annual chal-lenge to the youth of South Africa tospring into action for people livingwith disabilities.

“My love for the stage has made itvery easy for me to be a voice for thehearing impaired as both an ambassa-dor and motivational speaker.

“If I can change one person’s life aday or just inspire somebody to be thesame change for somebody else, thenI am thrilled,” she says.

Casual Day ambassadors are out inforce to tell South Africans that CasualDay is on Friday 4 September this yearand the theme is Spring into Action.

In honour of Youth Month, ambassa-dors are encouraging young people tofollow their lead and volunteer for Ca-sual Day by helping organisations toraise donations for stickers and to gettheir schools to celebrate the day.

Casual Day ambassadors are askingcommunities to pay attention to youthwith disabilities in this Youth Month.

“I am so honoured to have been ap-pointed as a Casual Day ambassador. Ca-sual Day is a household name and reallywell supported by the public. Being apart of this platform is an amazing step-ping stone for me, but at the same timeit is an even bigger responsibility to fur-ther educate the public about hearingimpairment. I hope that this year willreach an even higher benchmark of suc-cess than last year,” says Simone.

Simone’s latest stage appearance is inVeronica Paeper’s large scale produc-

tion, A Spartacus of Africa, which is onat Artscape from 27 June to 12 July. Shehas just completed the production’s runat the Jo’burg Theatre, where she per-formed in the lead role of Phrygia.

She is encouraging all mainstreamschools to come on board and partnerwith schools for learners with disabili-ties in their areas. “Getting a learner ina school environment to participate in

High School is the latest TygerBurgerSportstar of the Month winner.According to his coach andmentor Shi-

hanHennie Bosman, he has all the attrib-utes to be a champion.“We travelled to the Junior Kyokushin

World Union championships in Russialast December. Dane narrowly lost a veryclose fight with the eventual winner inthe second round. He was also fighting inthe under-15 category against older boys.“He has tremendous work ethic and

you will go far to find a more humble andfriendly young man. I am very proud ofDane. We are now working towards thenational Len Barnes tournament in Sep-tember,” said Bosman.It also comes as no surprise that he is

part his school’s under-15A rugby teamand is no slouch with the discus duringthe athletics season.“Firstly I want to thank everyone in-

volved. It is a very big honour and sur-
