own food garden to augment the

schools feeding scheme that feeds 600

    learners per day.

    OnMonday the school proudly showcased

their garden when Western Cape education

minister Debbie Schfer paid them a visit.

Schfer said it was extraordinary to see

    what the school had created.

As reported last month, the rising cost of

certain food items such as maize as a result

of the drought we are experiencing, has al-

ready led to unexpected increases in costs

for feeding scheme food items, she said.

We are therefore encouraged to see that

some schools are creating innovative pro-

jects to further supplement their school feed-

ingneeds. This is an excellent example of the

kind of innovation that wewish to see in our

    schools during these tough economic

    times, she said.

She added that the Western Cape govern-

ment is committed to ensuring that poorer

learners continue to receive not just one, but

two nutritious meals at school every day.

    Poverty and under-nutrition affect large

percentages of our population. And as a re-

sult, many learners arrive at school hungry.

It is a proven fact that you cannot teach a

    hungry child.

This is why the Western Cape Govern-

ment is committed to ensuring that learners

states that by 2030, feeding schemes in

schools should cover all children in need,

and provide food that is high in nutritional

    content and rich in vitamins.

According to Schfer the Western Cape

province is on track to achieve this goal.

    Our successful school nutrition pro-

gramme has expanded year on year to assist

more and more learners. In addition to sup-

    plying food, the schemeencourages foodpro-

duction, for example, in school food gardens

    and education on nutrition.

Durbanville police arrested a man and a

woman in Fisantekraal last Wednesday for

    the possession of drugs.

The crime prevention unit followed up on

information that police received of a known

drug house in Fisantekraal, says Lieutenant

    Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for Durban-

ville police. The officers searched the house

at about 09:00 and found 15 whole mandrax

tablets, 60 half mandrax tablets and 40 quar-

ter mandrax tablets on one of the suspects

    inside thehouse.Theyalso founda small bag

containing tik and 219 tik straws containing

tik in the house. They confiscated cash of

The feeding scheme at Cavalleria Primary

School provides for 330 learners from the

school, but the garden produces enough

supplementary food to feed 600 learners.

The garden was created in 2010, and pro-

duces supplementary fresh fruits and vege-

tables daily, such as tomatoes, figs, prunes,

    plums, peaches, grapes, strawberries, egg-

    plant, cabbage, carrots, tomato, cauliflower,

spinachand spring onions aswell as a varie-

    ty of herbs.

    School principal Hurshele Carolissen is

proud of whats been achievedwith the food

    garden.

He says it has contributed to the improved

health of the learners, and benefitted his

school by providing healthy and organic

    fruit and veggies almost daily.

    Learners have improved concentration

in class, which has led to improved partici-

pation, which in turn has led to improved

results. The educators also use the garden

as an extension of their classrooms for spe-

cific lessons and concepts, he said.

Learners will often assist in the garden

and by doing so, expand their knowledge.

Many learners from the school have since

started their own food garden at home.

He has also noticed an improvement in

    school attendance.

In addition to feeding their learners, the

school also donates surplus foodwhen it can

    toneedyhouseholds and institutionswithin

    the community.

This is a remarkable achievement and

one of which I am very proud. I must con-

gratulate the principal and his team at Ca-

valleria Primary School for their commit-

ment to this innovative and creative initia-

    wo primary school learners were

caught in the act of shooting squirrels

    with a bow and arrows.

A resident caught them red-handed in

Welgemoed on the local golf course just over

a week ago, hunting the tiny rodents.

It is very disturbing that we found two

Welgemoed Primary School boys dressed in

their school uniform, killing sweet, inno-

cent squirrels with a bow and arrow on the

golf course this week. They would not give

their names, but we took the bow and ar-

rows. Very cruel little boys and very dis-

turbing, the resident said on social media.

What followed was a frenzy from locals

who debated whether or not this was nor-

mal behaviour of two bored boys, or the

makings of two psychopaths who hurt little

    animals for fun and games.

    The school involvedoptednot to comment

as the incident happened outside their

school hours and premises, but TygerBur-

ger asked some other sources for their opin-

    ion on the matter.

Dr Charl Davids is a psychologist and lec-

turer at the University of the Western Cape

and said there are two key issues at play

here. Yes, people say let boys be boys and

that is okay in some cases, but the question

is: how often do these children kill ani-

mals? he said. If they do this quite often,

there is a definite behavioural problem and

one should ask if a child can be this violent

and not consider the life of an animal, what

sort of grownup are they conditioned to be-

    come,Davids said. In somecases thiskind

of violence leads to even greater violence

when these children grow up. If they hit,

beat or shoot someone later, people ask how

this could happen, but in the meantime we

are socialised to slide into that role, he add-

ed. Most of us took up a slingshot when we

were young, but most of us also let it go at

some point to take stock of what we were

    doing.

Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA spokes-

person Belinda Abraham said: It is ex-

tremely disturbing that children are in-

volved in acts of cruelty towards animals.

Decades of research have shown that when

children are taught compassion for ani-

mals, they are more likely to become men

and women who are more humane, more

law abiding and in every respect more valu-

able citizens. It is for this very reason that

the CoGH SPCA has an education depart-

ment that reaches over 10 000 children an-

nually, bringing them the message of com-

    passionand respect for animals.Ultimately,

this teaching should begin at home and is

the responsibility of parents, she said.

Abraham said they have had similar re-

ports, most recently that of the stoning of

    a horse and a baboon.

Asked about the angle of this being seen

as sport, or a rite of passage, she was ada-

mant this was against all the CoGH SPCA

stood for. The SPCA is opposed to hunting.

In addition to this, the Animals Protection

    Act 71 of 1962 2 (1) (a) is very clear on the

fact that any person who ill-treats, neglects,

tortures, maims or terrifies any animal

shall be guilty of an offence and liable on

conviction to a fine or imprisonment.

In this incidence however, the offenders

are underaged and therefore not prosecuta-

ble in terms of the law. I would however, en-

courage the parents of these boys to bring

them to the SPCA and allow us the opportu-

nity to influence these young minds.

s theirwoes continue at the Sassa ser-

vice office in Scottsdene, senior citi-

    zens in Kraaifontein blatantly accuse

    Sassa of ignorance.

Following the death of a senior citizen on

6 April, who slept outside this office to se-

cure a spot in the line the next day, Sassa

stated all clients who access Sassa contact

points for services are assisted on the day.

It is not necessary for any client to have

to sleep over at any Sassa contact point in

order to access services, saidSassa spokes-

person Shivani Wahab. She added that a

home visit can be scheduled at the nearest

contact point for clients who are not well.

One senior citizen, whowishes to remain

    anonymous, lastweek toldTygerBurger the

    spokespersonmust eitherbe ill-informedor

    completely ignorant.

    Six visits in two months

She said it took her six visits in two

months to this particular office to get two

    children registered for Sassa grants.

It is a fact that the Sassa officials inform

the applicants at every session that Sassa

will not be able to assist all the people

present on the day, she said. This, she add-

ed, was either due to the lack of resources

or the fact that the officials are always late.

They arrive well after 09:00 and some-

times 10:00 at the venue. It takes them half

an hour or more to setup and then they will

sometimes leave early due to otherwork re-

    lated commitments, she said.

During the long and tiresome wait one

canonlymarvel at someof the officials atti-

tude towards passing time between appli-

cants being processed. To top it all, the com-

pany that issues the Sassa cards is an out-

    sourced company situated in Philippi.

These people are evenworse in terms of ser-

vice as they are always late, leave early, and

most of the time are either understaffed or

    have malfunctioning equipment.

She says Sasssa cannot wish away the

fact that people are forced to sleep over at

the venue. Neither can they deny the fact

that people as in my case have stood in line

since 03:00 in the morning only to walk

away not serviced at the end of the day.

She says she has witnessed many desper-

ate applicants who were willing to pay resi-

dents in the area to stand in line for them.

Whether it is for the application or the

Sassa card, it happens all the time.Children

and pensioners are traumatised at the end

of the day because the facility is not de-

signed to facilitate huge crowds for lengthy

periods especially on hot days, she says.

    Cancer patient sent away repeatedly

Another pensioner, who has cancer, has

been sent away several times in recent

    weeks for trivial reasons.

My husband is very ill with cancer, yet

we were sent away because our affidavit

was in Afrikaans. We were told to come

back with the same statement in English,

    she told TygerBurger distraughtly.

We have been battling for months now

to finalise our application and despite sev-

eral calls to Sassas national office, no help

    was offered.

In response to these allegations Wahab

stated that application for a social grant re-

quires a number of stipulated documents to

    be submitted.

While Sassa is committed to ensuring

that all applications are processed within

our standardised business process of one

day, in certain instances social grant appli-

cants do not bring along these required doc-

uments, andas a resultmighthave to access

a contact point more than once in order for

the application to be processed, she said.

According to her an application will be

finalised on the same day and the applicant

informed of the outcome, providing all the

required documentation is present at the

time of application. She also said the Sassa

regional office has taken note of these com-

plaints and will ensure that the contact

point is monitored by management, to ad-

dress all possible service delivery gaps and

    to ensure effective management.

    In respect of children accompanying

their parents for social grant applications

it is required by law that for a Child Sup-

port Grant application, the child is with the

parent at the time of the application. The

child must be enrolled on the system if the

application is successful. This in turn pre-

vents fraud in the system. Sassa has always

    discouraged potential and current benefici-

aries from sleeping over at any Sassa con-

tact point. Additional staff have been de-

ployed to this point to assist with the high

    influx and service delivery gaps.

    R

esidents of the northern suburbs of

Cape Town are making a desperate

plea to the City of Cape Town to ad-

dress the ever growing problem of vagran-

    cy in residential areas.

This was evident at a recent budget din-

ner at the Kuils River Golf Club, where

    community leaders peppered executive

deputy mayor Ian Neilson with questions.

The most prominent issue was this, as

posed by Brackenfell CPF chairman Sean

    McCleland:

What is the City going to do in the next

financial year to bolster law enforcement

numbers to adequately enforce bylaws in-

stituted to control problems arising with

    vagrants?

    Theanswer to this question,however, re-

mains vague and residents seem to be

caught between the devil and the deep blue

sea, having either the police or the Citys

Law Enforcement agency to turn to, each

    presenting its own problems.

Neilson affirmed this position when he

stated that the police, rather than Law En-

    forcement, represent the primary service

responsible for the criminal behaviour in

    terms of vagrants.

The City of Cape Town only has 3000

    peace officers, which include traffic,Metro

and Law Enforcement, whereas the police

have 22 000 officers in the city, he said.

Due to the Citys limited resources it

cannot take full responsibility for dealing

with criminal acts committed by vagrants.

We as an administration have to focus on

social solutions when it comes to manag-

ing vagrants and the City is heavily in-

volved in addressing that part of the issue

through its interventions by the Citys so-

    cial development department, he said,

adding that patience is needed as this is a

    very slow process.

In the last seven years much progress

has been made to reduce the number of

street people but we are slowly working to-

    wards solutions.

The police, on the other side, have in

many instances over the years referred

complaining residents to the City when it

    comes to vagrants.

And herein lies the problem, says

    McCleland.

Neither party wants to take accounta-

bility for the problem. Loitering, for in-

stance, is not a criminal act, neither is

walking down the street with a trolley. But

what happens is this: Law Enforcement

gets called out for vagrants but when they

search their bags or trolleys they find a

    dangerousweapon like a knife. Immediate-

ly it becomes a criminal situation where

Law Enforcement has to step back and the

police have to be called in. Is it not true

then that the police should have been there

    in the first place?

McCleland says the City of Cape Town

and the police have to give clear guidelines

to community structures such as neigh-

bourhood watches, as to what law is in-

    fringed on at various instances.

A meeting to discuss strategies around

this problem will take place this week.

The police and local government au-

thorities will be present at this meeting in

    order to implement workable solutions.

As residents we are heavily burdened

by ever increasing rates and taxes and yet

the Citywill not hold themselves accounta-

ble to make sure bylaws they have put in

    place are successfully enforced.

    Vagrants: residents are desperate

meeting last Monday to act in a timeous

manner to ensure the discs are renewed

    within the grace period.

    Motorists are reminded that national

    quires proof of residencewhen applications

are made for licence disc renewals.

If motorists are planning on renewing

their licence discs at one of our municipal

he Clothing Bank, a non-profit organi-

sation (NPO) that uses excess stock

    from large clothing enterprises to

transform the lives of unemployed mothers

trapped in a cycle of poverty, has won the

    2016 Schwab Foundations Social Entrepre-

    neur of the Year award.

The NPOs Winelands office in Paarl has

    been actively involved in empowering

women from areas such as Kraaifontein in

the northern suburbs of Cape Town.

Every year, the Schwab Foundation for

    SocialEntrepreneurship the sister organi-

sation of the World Economic Forum con-

    siders thousands of nominations from

    around the world.

This year only 11 organisations, includ-

ing The Clothing Bank (TCB) were deemed

to have met the criteria for the award.

    Said Katherine Milligan, director and

head of the Schwab Foundation: Social en-

    trepreneursare crucial to theglobal conver-

sation about inclusive growth; they are in-

novators who use market forces and busi-

ness discipline to provide solutions for local

problems and improve the lives of low-in-

    come and marginalised people.

Speaking at a function in Cape Town last

week, Dr Francois Bonnici, the director of

    BerthaCentre for Social InnovationandEn-

    trepreneurshipatUCTsGraduateSchool of

Business, said The Clothing Bank was a

very powerful example of successful social

    entrepreneurship.

The Clothing Bank has clearly demon-

strated that we can use business models ef-

fectively in working on key social challen-

ges, and has shown leadership in the sector

by focusing on measuring how their work

improves the lives of the people they serve.

The initiative is an outstanding benchmark

and role model for many social entrepre-

neurs in South Africa, he added.

In the six years since its establishment by

Tracey Chambers and Tracey Gilmore, and

using excess stock donated by local retail-

ers, TCB has trained over 1135 women to es-

    tablish micro enterprises. Collectively,

these women have generated profits of over

R38m at an average of R4100 per month

    each.

We are extremely grateful for the sup-

port and encouragement of our sponsors

    and retail partners Woolworths, Edcon,

Pick n Pay Clothing, Mr Price and Clicks

aswell as the Jobs Fund, the IDC, OldMutu-

al Foundation and the European Union.

The success of our projects, and the dif-

ference we are able to make to the lives of

so many families would not be possible

    without their ongoing, generous support.

The award from the Schwab Foundation is

an acknowledgement of this, said Cham-

So my ancestors were not slaves

that people did not even know of,

    adds Allie.

    Besides the historical aspect the

race affords itself to, Allie says

there is an amazing atmosphere of

    togetherness on race day.

It is the spirit of Ubuntu that

you feel. You will see a grandmoth-

er who has never ever walked (in

an event) in her entire life. She is

now walking the 5km with her

    grandchildren because her daugh-

ter andher husband are going to be

    running the 10kmwhile their teen-

ager is running the 21km, so this

is a family event. It is about people

coming together from all walks of

    life, all religious denominations,

from Cape Town and from out of

    CapeTown, from the continent and

    even overseas, she says.

    Allie reminded those who still

wish to participate in the 21km

race to enter online no later than

    Sunday 24 April. She confirmed

that there will still be opportuni-

ties to enter the other three events

    (5km fun run/walk, 10km run and

10km big walk) on Sunday 1 May

as well as Friday 6 and Saturday 7

May at Cape Towns City Hall.

    Come and explore this whole

    Castle, District Six, and Gardens,

through the Bo-Kaap and the Sea

    Against Racism next month.

Taking place on Saturday 28 May at the

Green Point Athletics Stadium, the fun

walk will comprise 22 rounds of walking

around the Green Point athletics track,

with each lap representing one round for

    each year of our democracy.

The key objective of this event is to

unite ourpeople against all formsof racism

and related intolerances. It also encourag-

es people to walk and live a healthier life.

More importantly, it is an opportunity for

families, friends and colleagues to come to-

gether, have a fun-filled day and send out

a powerful message against racism, says

Cycle of Life director, Rozario Brown.

A host of activities are being planned to

ensure the event offers something for the

entire family, including the young and

young at heart. Children can look forward

to some face painting activities, a jumping

castle and exciting spot prizes. Adults

stand a chance of winning some amazing

spot prizes, including a trip for two on the

world famousBlue Train, return flights be-

tween Johannesburg and the USA and

    many more.

Our master of ceremonies will enter-

tain the audiences throughout the day and

during the actual fun walk, while the DJ

in attendance will provide some of the best

music to ensure the right mood exists for

the day. We urge participants to bring

along any form of handmade posters, flags

and banners, denouncing all forms of ra-

    cism, says Rozario.

Organisers would like to encourage par-

ticipants to wear black and white sports

    wear on the day.

We have invited a number of high pro-

file celebrities to participate in this impor-

tant event. This week we can proudly an-

nounce that well-known Cape Town diva

Salome Damon will be playing her part in

fighting racism and participating in this

exciting walk, says Brown. Salome is

known across South Africa for her breath-

taking performance as part of the famous

Madame Zingara team and is a hugely pop-

ular star on some of the biggest stages

    across the country.

We urge people to enter the Relay

Against Racism Family Walk early and

    lets walk away from racism.

Entries are now open and will cost R25

for children between the age of three and

13 and pensioners, and R40 for everyone

else. Entries are limited to 3500 partici-

pants and online registration closes on Sat-

Once you have entered online, print

your application form and bring along

Are you a big David Hasselhoff or Baywatch

fan, or ever just wanted to try your hand at

lifesaving? Well, now is your big chance.

The City of Cape Town issued a statement

inviting each and every one who is keen on

trying lifesaving to apply for temporary life-

    guard positions at swimming pools.

Although summer is still some months

away, the Citys sport and recreation ameni-

ties departmenthad to ensure that its ameni-

ties are ready in time. Emphasis is placed

on safety at all 35municipal swimmingpools

that need to have a sufficient number of

qualified and competent lifeguards on duty.

More than 200 temporary lifeguard posi-

tions are available at public swimmingpools

    for the upcoming summer.

    Suitably qualified individuals may apply

for appointment on a non permanent, sea-

sonal contract basis for the positions of sen-

ior municipal pool lifeguard and municipal

pool lifeguard. Applicants are also invited to

    attend free supervised, preseason fitness

training at the its Blue Downs and Long

Street swimming pools thatwill be available

every Wednesday and Friday afternoons be-

    tween 14:00 and 16:00 until 3 June.

The peak summer season is the busiest

time of the year for us, with thousands flock-

ing to our swimming pools to cool off, says

    Maycomember for community services and

    special projects, Belinda Walker.

Swimming pools reached a peak of more

than 1 million bathers, making it one of the

busiest seasons in a decade due to the ex-

tremely hot weather experienced. We there-

fore need to have a team of well trained and

competent lifeguards on duty at our ameni-

ties to ensure the safety of our patrons.

Residents who meet the criteria for a life-

    guardpositionare encouraged to apply time-

ously as applications close on Friday 6 May.

    Two sides to

    every story;

    only one truth

There are always two sides to every

    story.

Theres the side we see, and then

    theres the side we shouldnt.

In a world of capitalism and corpora-

tions, one has to wonder how much of

the information we consume is being

force-fed to us and how much is truly

    objective reporting.

In the US, for example, a number of

    independent broadcasters have been

gaining momentum with the help of the

    internet.

    With no influence

    from advertisers

    (or the presidential

    candidates they

    support), the

    stories they report

    on and how they

    report on them, are

    vastly different

    from mainstream

    broadcasters.

    It was BBC

    executive John

    Reith who first

    outlined the role of

    journalists as to

    educate, inform and entertain. Education

and information are the two most valua-

ble commodities of the modern age, yet,

very often, we are too busy looking for

entertainment to pay attention to these

    elements.

More importantly, as early as 1787,

print journalism is often referred to as

The Fourth Estate, which, in a nut-

shell, refers to a political or social force

    that isnt always officially recognised.

The medias role in changing the world

for the better in the past is undeniable.

    Here, for example, photographers like

Sam Nzima showed the rest of the world

the reality of Apartheid South Africa,

even when the government was blocking

these images from the local press.

A look at the history books shows that

governmental impact on the media is not

    uncommon, often with disastrous effects.

The Nazis ruled their people with the

help of Joseph Goebbels and his propa-

ganda while a string of American presi-

dents tried to control how their citizens

got their news about the Vietnam War.

The only difference between the 1940s,

1970s and now, is the shift of power. As

capitalism started to steadily rise in

popularity and influence after the Second

World War, the business sector slowly

gained more power over the people who

    should have been governing them.

A colleague once pointed out that every

news story should be measured by who

stands to benefit most from it. The news

looks a little different when you start

considering it with this question in mind.

    n Gesaghebbende onafhanklike

    navorsingsentrum, die Centre

    of Development and Enterprise

    (CDE), het in Januarie

    gerapporteer oor The real cost

    of compliance: The impact of

    South African regulatory

    requirements on independent

    schools. Hulle bevind onder

    meer dat die private skoolsek-

    tor hopeloos oorgereguleer is

en veel hor eise aan private

    skole gestel word as aan

staatskole; en dat die koste van

    die rompslomp om n private

    skool te registreer dit feitlik

    onmoontlik maak om klein

    private skole te registreer.

    Hulle bereken byvoorbeeld

dat die werklike koste om n

    private skool te registreer

    tussen R270 000 en R290 000

    beloop, ongeag die grootte van

    die skool. Dit vreet hulpbronne

op wat vir opvoeding bedoel is.

    Maar dit plaas ook registra-

sie buite die bereik van enige

    mikroskooltjie. Dit is n

    skending van sulke skooltjies

    se wetlike en grondwetlike reg

    om te bestaan.

    Dieselfde owerheid wat

    hierdie laste op private onder-

wys plaas, bedryf een van die

    slegste skoolstelsels ter wreld,

    gevolg is honderdduisende

    desperate ouers soos Roelof

Coertzen wie se brief op 13

    April (TB Bellville) verskyn

het. Hulle bel en e-pos my

    daagliks.

Dit moet ons dus nie verbaas

    dat daar letterlik duisende

    onwettige private skooltjies

in al die gemeenskappe in die

land is nie selfs in die

    armstes. In n vorige ondersoek

    het CDE bevind dat hierdie

    skooltjies beter resultate lewer

    as beide staats- en geregistreer-

    de private skole.

    reading also reflects exactly

    double the amount recorded last

month, amounting to a cost of

    over R900 extra. My December

    and January payments differed

by R1000, so it seems to seesaw

    from month to month regard-

less of efforts to contain costs.

    R427.13 has been charged for

    sewerage. My previous payment

was R137.25. I know that this is

    calculated as a percentage of

the water usage but I am a lone

    pensioner with no domestic

I have not had diarrhoea nor

am I incontinent but it seems

the toilet is another luxury I

must forego if I am to continue

    validity of these statements, the

at beteken dit om God se kind

    te wees?

    Dt is die ondertoon vanpas-

toor Lodewyk Spies van Sonstraal se nuwe

boek: Bid s vir n wonderwerk.

    Lodewyk het die 40-dag-gebedsuitdaging

in rekordtyd geskryf nadat hy n uitdaging

van Carpe Diem Media ontvang het.

Toe hymet sy debuutwerk begin het, het

Lodewyk geweet dat hy sy idees doeltref-

    fend moes kommunikeer.

Mense is besig; meeste mense is nie lus

om n 700-blad-boek te lees nie hulle het

nie die tyd of kopspasie daarvoor nie.

Dis weens di feit dat hy besluit het om

die boek s te skryf dat die leser so twee

    blaaieperdagoor n tydperkvan40daekan

    lees.

Ek dink daars genoeg voorbeelde uit

die Bybel oor waar 40 dae vandaan kom,

    s Lodewyk.

    Vroeg in boek

    Sommervroeg indieboekword lesers ge-

    bedsinfrastruktuur.

    Een van my gunsteling-onderwerpe

    waaroor ek praat is WhatsApp-gebedsket-

tings hoor God jou oor jy baie is, of hoor

    Hy jou omdat jy glo?

    Uiteindelikmoet jy genoeg selfvertroue

h om te s: As ek regtig glo Hys my pa,

dan kan ek op n baie ander manier met

    Hom interaksie h.

    Verhouding

    Lodewyk voel dat godsdiens dikwels

mense se verhouding met God professio-

neel maak en dat daar geen ruimte vir vry-

moedigheid is nie. n Mens moet volgens

hom dieselfde verhouding met God h as

wat gewone kinders met hul pas het.

Nog n onderwerp in die boek is die

vraag: Het my gebede ten doel om God se

    soos dobbel is endatmenseniekonsekwen-

sie in hul lewens hoef in te bou nie, weer-

    spreek.

Hy sal bietjie verder oor die boek uitbrei

wannneer hy op Saterdag 30 April n Bid

anders, leef anders-slypskool by DAria in

    Durbanville aanbied.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

While attending a preschool is vitally impor-

tant for a childs development, it is a luxury

that parents in informal settlements cannot

    afford.

The first time these youngsters enter an

educational facility is at age six or seven to

    start Grade 1.

We strongly believe that this is too late

as a childs brain develops optimally during

the first seven years of life. It is a time of rap-

    id cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional

    andmotor development, says Juanita Smit,

    founder of Rolemodels Foundation.

Founded six years ago, the charity organi-

sation set out to make a change in the lives

of children suffering in inhumane condi-

    tions.

Supported purely by donations from the

community, they are building the Imfundo

Educare Centre, an early childhood develop-

ment facility, with three classrooms for the

children of Mandela Square in the Zwele-

    themba informal settlement in Worcester.

We have a dream; a dream tomake it bet-

ter for the next generation, says Mrs Cape

Town Diane Nel, an ambassador of the foun-

    dation and resident of Brackenfell.

    Rolemodels Foundation hosts philan-

    thropic pageants across SouthAfrica, which

serves as fund-raisers for the foundation.

Beauty without a purpose is not beauti-

ful. We believe that it is important to teach

the youth that they can indeedmake a differ-

ence in the community, by getting involved

    in constructive projects, says Nel.

Like Nelson Mandela, we believe educa-

tion is the most powerful weapon to change

    the world.

Over the last two years Nel, who was rais-

ing funds for the cause, was a regular visitor

to this informal settlement where children

live in the harshest of conditions.

Besides the ultimate benefit to the chil-

dren in this community, this project has also

created many jobs for unemployed men in

    the region.

We particularly focused on the needs of

children who cannot change their circum-

stances or the cycle of poverty into which

    they were born, says Smit.

It is ourmission to intervene in impover-

ished communities to create self sustainabil-

ity through education to ultimately eradi-

    cate poverty, she says.

The word Imfundo is derived from the

    Nguni language and directly translated

means the acquisition of knowledge and ed-

    ucation.

Nel says the realities of life in these com-

    munities are heart-wrenching.

We live in a beautiful country, but there

are still too many people living below the

bread line in third-world conditions. Be-

sides providing food for them, we want to

make a lasting difference that will have a

positive impact on the next generation, she

    says.

To do this, we realised that we needed to

start at the foundation years of a childs life.

By trying to assist an adult who has grown

up in an impoverished community, we are

only really treating the symptom, not the

    cause.

    For this reasonwedecided to concentrate

our efforts on providing facilities that will

give young children a solid foundation.

    Early childhood development between the

ages of three and six has become an absolute

    necessity.

Children who start their school career

without preschool education, start off, in

Grade 1, at a disadvantage. This handicap

will follow the child through his school ca-

reer and eventually manifest in learning

    and behavioural problems, says Smit.

She adds it is hardly surprising that so

many of these children drop out of school at

a young age and opt to make a life begging

    on the streets.

We need to create a new norm for them.

It has beenproven overmany centuries, that

what a young child experiences in their

formative years, will manifest in their teen-

    age years.

Smit says the foundation does not current-

ly receive any government or corporate

funding; it relies solely on the income from

    thepageants andkindvolunteers in the com-

    munity.

We need to continue initiating and sus-

taining more Imfundo Projects, so that we

can reach as many children as possible.

Long termplans she says, include an after-

    care/homework facility, where these chil-

dren can go to for assistancewith homework

    and assignments.

Furthermore, the foundation is in the

    process of establishing an agricultural

project in Worcester, where crops will be

grown to provide for the meals at the Imfun-

do Educare and create an income for the

    project.

The farm project provides the Worcester

Imfundo Educare with some of its fresh pro-

duce, whilst ultimately also providing train-

ing for school leavers in agricultural skills.

    Thepublic canget involvedby supporting,

entering or attending a pageant, such asMrs

Cape Town, hosted by Rolemodels Founda-

tion or by collecting or sourcing non-perish-

able food items, clothing, fresh fruit, vegeta-

bles andmilk, or by donating buildingmate-

    rials.

Readers can also donate their time by be-

coming a volunteer at the Imfundo Educare

et sy nuwe country-album, If you

could read my mind, is die Afrikaan-

se superster Steve Hofmeyr die per-

fekte trekpleister vir vanjaar se Bakgat

    Country-opskop.

    DiekonsertwordopSondag 5 Junie vir die

vyfde keer in GrandWest se arena aange-

bied. Steve gaan die verhoog met plaaslike

    country-sterre soos Bobby Angel, Manie

    Jackson, Dennis East, TommyOliver, Lance

James, Barbara Ray, Rocking Horse en die

nuwelinge Pieter Mohr en Dee-Dee deel.

Vir Steve is country-musiek so natuurlik

    soos braai, boerewors en Afrikaans.

Dis dan geen wonder dat hy oor sy meer

as 25 jaar lange loopbaan baie met di mu-

siekstyl op sy Toeka- en Kris Kristofferson-

    albums geksperimenteer het nie.

Dis omdat hy so sentimeteel en boonop

trots daarop is dat country-musiek so na aan

sy hart l. Ek hou van die liefde, ek haat

die afwesigheid daarvan en ek is super-nos-

talgies, verduidelik hy. Dis alles country

    se domein daai.

If you could read my mind bestaan uit 15

liedjies wat deur die hoogaangeskrewe ver-

    vaardiger Juan Floors Oosthuizen opge-

neem is. Van die liedjies is bekende country-

treffers, terwyl ander liedjies nuwe country-

    baadjies gegee is.

Dit is sommer n lang lys waarmee ek al

lank vroetel, vertel Steve, maar oral waar

hy gekom het was daar n vriend of kennis

    met n lekker country-voorstel.

    Teach Your Children was byvoorbeeld

die Coleske-broers se idee en Drift Away

    was Pat Symcox se bydrae.

Steve s dit lyk asof daar nog baie country

in sy onmiddellike toekoms is. If you could

read my mind staan amper al klaar by dub-

    belplatinum-status. Suid-Afrika het weer

    eens gepraat. Ek luister graag.

Aanhangers sal n kans kry om van Steve

se nuwe liedjies te hoor wanneer hy by die

    Bakgat Country-opskop optree.

Ek het my ses gunsteling-liedjies gekies

hul spore wil volg, s hy verder.
