Five boys from Epping Forest took advan- tage of the warm weather on Sunday to swim at the Black River mouth near Paarden Ei- land, but only three returned. At the time of going to press the search for the bodies of Ridge Reed and Vernon Dar- ries, both 13, was still continuing. The two were with twins Dane and Dylan Seppie (14) and Mogamat Davids (14). The boys found a makeshift raft made of barrels under the bridge near the river mouth and started playing on it. It appears that the flow of the river pulled them out to sea and they jumped off in an attempt to swim to shore but only three made it to safety. The Table Bay National Sea Rescue Insti- tute (NSRI) received the call at about 16:00 informing them the boys had been swept in- to the sea and rescue operation started im- mediately. As the family is still coming to terms with the tragedy, it seems that it could have been avoided. Debris trap According to Paarden Eiland City Im- provement District manager Patricia Tal- lant, a debris trap near the mouth of the ca- nal might have prevented the calamity. These nets are spanned from one side of the canal to the other and stops debris from washing into the sea or up the canal. Ward councillor Bernadette le Roux says, however, that the trap was designed for de- bris, and not for people to hang on to, thus may not have helped the boys. About two weeks ago the City of Cape Town installed a debris trap between Ma- rine Drive and the Bus Rapid Transport bridge, but one of the steel rods were stolen “almost overnight”, according to Tallant. Another one was apparently also stolen re- cently, so the debris trap is ineffective. According to Pat van Eyssen, the local NSRI station commander, a security guard spotted the children playing in the water un- der the Marine Drive bridge, and later no- ticed them being swept into the sea. It is unclear whether the floating barge of barrels they were on came from higher up in the canal. If so, the the debris trap might have played a part in preventing the tragedy. Van Eyssen says the origin of the barge will form part of the investigation. “The kids shouldn’t have been there in the first place,” says Tallant, before adding the public are generally ignorant when it comes to the canal. “At least twice a month our patrolmen must warn a child not to swim in there. In the summer people swim in there almost every day! None of them seem to realise how rough the water is when the tide comes in,” she says. The canal is also often used for fish- ing or as an escape route for criminals. Tallant adds that “scrap merchants” regu- larly go into the canal to remove items they can use. Search and rescue “Maybe the canal should be fenced off, but that will be expensive,” she says. A fence might have prevented the Elsies River boys from entering the canal in the first place. “It’s a pity we have to wait for tragedy to strike before we focus on these type of meas- ures,” she concludes. On Sunday the NSRI’s volunteer sea res- cue duty crew launched a sea rescue craft and sea rescue vehicle when they received the call. Provincial government EMS and rescue, the Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue helicop- ter, police, a police diving unit, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Cape Town Fire and Rescue divers, Life Care Paramedic Re- sponse and ER24 ambulance services re- sponded. “The three survivors were transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable con- dition for observation for secondary drown- ing and they were accompanied by police and police trauma counsellors,” van Eyssen says. Despite an extensive sea, air and shore search, no sign of the two missing children have been found and police are continuing an ongoing search. wounding him fatally. The suspects fled the area and police re-

trieved 13 spent cartridges at the scene of thecrime.Police are investigating whether another

person was also injured during the attack.Themotive for theattack isunder investiga-

tion and police are probing the possibility ofa link to gang or drug related activities.

V Police are investigating a charge of murder and anyone with information is requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Michael Bailey on021 953 8100.

Solve murderBad driving led to bust

Vigilant Constables Nkosi Mbali and JuanitaMathews from Maitland Flying Squad withtheir bust

If you’re driving around with stolen goods, remember the first rule is not to attract at-tention from the police by driving badly. This was the situation on the Stellen-

bosch Arterial Road in Belhar on Friday 8August when an inconsiderate drivercaught the attention of law enforcement of-ficers at about 11:45.The driver was pulled off the road, with

officers intending to reprimand him, butwhile speaking to the driver, ConstablesJuanita Mathews and Nkosi Mbali of theMaitland Flying Squad noticed suspiciouslooking bags in the back of the SUV and de-cided to search it.Upon further inspection they recovered

11 bags of copper, copper wire and alumini-um fittings. The total weight of the goods came to al-

most threehundredkilograms,with anesti-mated value of about R20 000.

Three suspects aged between 45 and 28were then arrested after they failed to pro-vide police officers with a valid invoice ora reasonable explanation for being in pos-session of the goods. They will face charges for the illegal pos-

session of suspected stolen property.According to the investigating officer,

Detective Warrant Officer William Sny-man, the police are disturbed by the con-stant occurrences of copper theft and arebusy liaisingwith Eskom, Transnet and theCity of Cape Town electricity department todetermine ownership of the copper wiresfound in the vehicle.Captain Michael Bailey, CID Branch

Commander of Belhar Precinct, commend-ed the members for an excellent bust andrequested they be vigilant at all times to en-sure that the community and its resourcesare protected.

The fight against illegal guns on the streetsof Delft took another turn for the better overthe weekend.“We are dedicated to eliminating illegal

firearms from our communities,” said Brig-adier Hendrik Jansen, Acting Cluster Com-mander for the Delft Cluster.Jansen made this statement during a pa-

rade of the crime prevention units at the re-spective stations. He further said that police officers within

the Delft Cluster, which includes Delft, Bel-lville South, Ravensmead and Belhar sta-tions, had seized six firearms, magazinesand ammunition this week during crime

prevention patrols and operations. On Monday 4 August officers searched

suspects inMunwa Court Leiden and founda red plastic bag containing 21 9mm roundsof ammunition. Two men were arrested. The next day police were busy with fur-

ther operations in Delft when a search of ahouse revealed a CZ pistol with a magazinefilled with 14 rounds. Three suspects werearrested.Earlier that day officers had also

searched a suspect and discovered anotherCZpistolwithammunition andarrested the22-year-old suspect. The list continued, with arrests inEureka

Estate when a 22-year-old was arrested forhaving a Vector pistol in his possession. InBelhar another house was searched and a

9mm Baretta with ammunition was foundwith the serial number filed off.A man and two women were arrested in

connection with this discovery.Brigadier Jansen expressed his concern

at the fact that most of the weapons hadtheir serial numbers filed off, but two of thefirearms were not reported stolen or miss-ing.He warned legal firearm owners that in-

vestigations will be conducted into theirconduct and any negligence will be prose-cuted.The other option the police have is to in-

stitute a Section 102 inquiry in terms of theFirearms Control Act, through which theownersmaybedeclaredunfit to further pos-sess a firearm licence.

Police battle against guns

In the light of themurders, attemptedmurders and shootings over the pastfew weeks in Bonteheuwel policehave been hard at work trackingdown the culprits.Bishop Lavis SAPS with the assist-

ance of the public have managed toarrest a well-known 21-year-old gangmember from Bonteheuwel Avenuelast week.On Tuesday 22 July officers were

were busy with crime prevention du-ties in the area at about 12:00 whenthey received information about ashotgun being kept in a house in Bon-teheuwel Avenue. They responded to the information

immediately and searched thepremises, where they saw the suspectholding a bag. When he saw the police he immedi-

ately started running and threw thebag into a neighbouring yard.Police caught up with him and he

was taken into custody when the bagwas found to contain an unlicensedfirearm with the serial number re-moved, and ammunition. At the same time officers were also

busy with operations in MahoganyStreet, a hotspot in recent weekswhere gangs are fighting each other. When officers spotted a known

gangmember standing in the area thepolice stopped next to him.As one of the officers got out of the

vehicle andnoticed an itemonhis leftside, he immediately started runningaway.Police caught up with him and ar-

rested him when an unlicensed fire-arm and ammunition was found onhis person. The serial number from this weap-

on was also removed and in both cas-es the guns were loaded and ready tobe used.

process the suspects Franco Arries, 26, fromNetreg Way, Bonteheuwel, and Sean Hen-driks, 29, from Bonteheuwel Avenue, weresentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

While Vanessa Coetzee may have beenteaching in the United Arab Emirates for thepast few years, she has never forgotten thatback home in Elsies River there are childrenwho brave the Cape winter without shoes.

Since starting to teach at the Maryam BinSultan High School for Girls a few years ago,she realised she wanted her learners to beaware of the difficulties some children inother parts of the world face.

“Each year the grade 11 girls have to doa community related project and I took achance by putting forward my idea of help-ing the kids at Elnor Primary to them,” shesays.

“Luckily for me since that first time aboutthree years ago it has now become an annualproject, and the interest is just growing.”

Vanessa quickly pointed out that the Ty-gerburger also became part of the learningprocess in her class.

“When the paper ran the story about theproject last year I took it with me and it cre-

ated a lot of excitement among the girls.“Last year we helped about 50 children,

this year it has grown to 78,” she smiles.Another special part of this project is that

there is also a local partnership from herfamily.

“I am so grateful for the people who carein our community,” she says.

“When I started my brother-in-law took upthe challenge as well and said that for everyshoe that I provide he will sponsor a jerseyand he has been true to his word every year.

“Another special lady is Delores Marriesfrom Pep Stores who came to the party togive us the goods at a special price and goingfrom store to store to find the right sizes.

“This shows my learners how people fromthis community care about the welfare of thechildren at Elnor.”

Principal at Elnor, John Rittman, praisedthe former Elsies resident for her caringheart.

“I am glad you have not forgotten yourroots,” said Rittman. “Too many peopleleave and don’t give something back to thecommunity that nurtured them.”

stukke, is einde verlede jaar uitgereik.

I have been in your fair cityfor just over a year. CapeTown is a rainbow nation – inthis city even the traffic robotsdon’t have colour segregation. No matter the colour – red, yellow or green – all robots aregreen to go through as fast aspossible, even with crossingtraffic.

What also amazes me is thatvehicles don’t seem to have tohave a set of two headlights ortail lights at night, whichseems to be acceptable to thetraffic and police officers, as Ihave even seen a couple ofthese with only one light. Itsometimes gives me theimpression there is a motorcy-cle approaching or I amcoming up to one. So obviouslyyou don’t need a core for avehicle here, even newermodels.

I would just like to reinforceDebora’s letter “Owners shouldkeep dogs on the leash”(TygerBurger, 30 July).

I also walk my dog on theleash on the fields betweenRacecourse Road and St John’sRoad. Almost everyday, I amconfronted with dogs off-leash.Sometimes 4x4s unload asmany as four or five dogs, large and small, and just letthem run.

I would consider this numbera “pack”, which could be verydangerous if they were toattack another dog on a leash.

It is a real danger, not onlyfor dog walkers, but also forpeople walking for enjoyment. The Animal Bylaw of 2010states: “It is illegal to havedogs in a public space or streetunless on a leash or in adesignated area”.

It would be great to have

Unleashed dogs amenace to walkers

this law obeyed. When I ap-proached any of the ownerswho are guilty of disobeying thelaw, I either get a “mind yourown business” or “I’ll just pay afine”. How irresponsible is that?

BARBARADurbanville

It must be a year or two agothat we noticed a recyclingdrive was coming to one of thesuburbs near or next to Bel-lville, but nothing else seems tohave happened since then.

I’m wondering when thisrecycling drive will come to oursuburb.

I understand something likethis costs money to start up,but surely it pays for itself inthe end?

Also, why doesn’t someoneconsider training some of thehomeless people – those whoalready collect recyclablematerial – to collect recyclingprofessionally.

Train them on what can andcannot be recycled and providethem with business skills sothat it can become a full-timejob for them (if they so wish). That way they get off thestreets and back into societyagain, and it helps lower theunemployment rate in ourcountry at the same time.

I hope someone can use thisidea and put it to good use.
