With community safety as his top pri-ority, the new captain at the helm ofpolice matters in the Tygerberg re-

gion plans to shake things up with meticu-lously planned strategies.

As of Friday 1 July, Major-General Mpu-melelo Manci, previously the provincialhead for Visible Policing in the WesternCape, is the newly appointed cluster com-mander of the Tygerberg police cluster withits seven police stations in Bellville, Brack-enfell, Bothasig, Durbanville, Goodwood,Kraaifontein and Parow.

“A high priority on the list of actions isthe identifying of crime groups, their arrestsand to achieve successful convictions,” hesaid in an interview with TygerBurger dur-ing a walkabout in Wallacedene townshiplast week.

Wallacedene was identified as a crime hot-spot in the cluster from where many crimeplans are hatched.

“We all know this region in Kraaifonteinto be a core area criminals operate from, andthat’s why I am here. The police need to infil-trate this community and build relation-ships with its residents. We have to worksmart and with the trust and cooperation ofthe community we can dramatically reduceactivity in the hotspot,” he says.

In the coming weeks Manci will establisha special provincial task team to stabilisethe area. “We will start by identifying crimegroupings, profiling them and dealing withthe kingpins. Increased operations, visibili-ty and undercover operations will specifical-ly be aimed at disrupting their activities and

not allowing them the space to operate,” heexplains.“Criminals, and in particularhouse and car robbers, will be meticulouslylinked to all outstanding cases and we willfocus on convicting them once and for all.”

He is currently meeting with the manage-ment teams and detective branches at all thepolice stations in the cluster.

“I need to familiarise myself with all thestations to determine ground level needswhere service delivery takes place,” he says.

The welfare and safety of police officers isanother urgent priority as are continued ef-forts to build partnership with other depart-ments, NGOs and community structures. Inthis respect, social crime drives are alreadyin planning.

“In partnership with the various commu-nity police forums and neighbourhoodwatches, we will work together to stamp outcrime in the Tygerberg policing precinct.Our mission is to create a safe and secureenvironment where citizens feel and aresafe,” he promises.

Manci joined the South African Police Ser-vice on 17 October 1987 and completed histraining in Hammanskraal. His first postwas as Constable at Langa in 1988 where hewas promoted to Warrant Officer andworked as a shift commander in charge ofall reliefs at the station. In 2001 he was pro-moted to Captain at the Langa Police Sta-tion, and after several promotions, he be-came deputy area commissioner at WestMetropole as director in charge of crime pre-vention and crime combatting operations.

“This office will exact all its efforts to en-sure that the above objectives are met,” heconcludes. “This is our purpose and togetherwe will achieve it.”

Concepts of Poverty”, undertaken byRever-end Dean at the University of Kwa-Zulu Na-tal, revealed that poverty was a key contrib-uting factor to increasing crime.The crime statistics for 2015 reported

Kraaifontein as one of the top ten crime are-as in South Africa. “Therefore, to responseadequately to crime, faith-based institu-tions such as the churchmust formulate ap-

propriate framework to address its underly-ing causes of which poverty is a major fac-tor,” he says.Dean says the project is always exciting

and fun-filled. Daily events include variousactivities such as sport, games and music,and group discussions on values such as re-spect for elders and love towards one anoth-er. A very strong message goes out – thatschool drop-out, gangsterism, drugs andsubstance abuse and xenophobia are notcool.“Other activities include artwork and

printing on T-shirts to take home, Biblemovies such as Moses and the Exodus andDaniel in Babylon, and meals and drinks,which for some of the children will be theironlymeal for the day due to high unemploy-ment and increasing poverty which contin-ue to dehumanise our people,” he says.Dean says they have over the years seen

a sharp rise in daily attendance from 150 to300 which included adults.“The purpose of the project is to keep the

youth and children occupied during the

school holiday, to make a meaningful con-tribution to their lives and tohelp create saf-er and better communities in Cape Town.”However, the need for resources to foster

community development is an ongoingstruggle, says Dean, who calls on the busi-ness community to support these communi-ty initiatives.“We also thank our great project team

Created in his garage studio in thetownship of Wallacedene in Kraaifon-tein, a 27-year-old ceramic artist’s

work is soon to be showcased in France.Simphiwe Mbunyuza’s work so captivat-

ed the imagination of Irene Hamilton thatshe – on first glance of his pieces – invitedhim to exhibit at her gallery during a ce-ramics expo in the city of Vallauris in Au-gust and September.This city, also referred to as “the Potters

Town”, is famous for housing the nationalPicasso museum where Picasso himselflived for a while to create ceramics.Themed “African Traditional Palette”,

Simphiwe will be displaying 15 of his finesthandmade ceramics in thehope of penetrat-ing the European market.As a young boy growing up in rural East-

ern Cape, Simpiwe loved playing with thenatural clay found in abundance in hishome town of Emambendeni.“I fell in love with clay. It is so versatile

and I lovedhowit transformed inmyhands.It is so easy to use and you can create what-ever you want,” he says.He started training in art in 2002 at Caley

Junior Secondary School, where his En-glish teacher, Mrs Sihlali, noted his talent.“She happened to be an artist by profes-

sion and after seeing some of my drawingsinvited me to join a small group of sixlearners whom she taught painting. Shetook our work to local, provincial and na-tional competitions where I won severalawards and medals.”Simphiwe was later formally introduced

to ceramics while studying fine arts at theWalter Sisulu University in East London.

“When I arrived there I could only drawand paint, but was later introduced to ce-ramics – something that immediately reso-nated with me. Clay became my passion,”he says.“What I love about ceramics is the fact

that you create something that is tangible;something that you can hold and feel; some-thing that can be functional. It doesn’t limitme in any faculty of creativity. It allowsmeto createwhatever Iwant to portray,wheth-er it will serve as functional or non-func-tional object,” he says.The beautiful African pots standing

around in his small studio portrays his pas-sion. Every piece is unique and tells a story.The collection to be exhibited in France

is new work, which portrays various Afri-can cultural symbolisms.Pointing to the little circles framing the

edge of one of his pots, he explains that thismotif refers to the dots Xhosa women painton their faces to adorn themselves.“Various cultural groups inAfricawill be

represented in the pieces,” he says.After graduating with a B Tech degree in

2015, Simphiwe established himself as afull-time artist in Cape Town a year ago.His work is currently on display at vari-

ous galleries including Dorp Street Galleryin Stellenbosch and Art in the Yard inFranschhoek.“Social media networking has played a

huge rule in getting my work andmy nameout there. In fact, this is how my work wasspotted by Nomaza Nongqunga, who runsan art agency in France called Undiscov-eredCanvas. She sawmyworkonFacebookand got hold of me.”It will be Simphiwe’s first international

exhibition and he is brimming with excite-ment.

we reach out to autistic and disabled chil-dren. Ribbons for Roses started the project‘Drop a Doppie’, whereby we collect plasticcaps for wheelchairs. We negotiate with re-

cycle companies all overSouthAfrica to sellthe plastic caps we collect. When we haveenough funds, we purchase the wheel-chairs,” she explains.Nikita-lee managed to collect all these

caps in only three months.“I could not have done this without the

David Woodall, a Grade 12 learnerfromMonument Park High Schoolin Kraaifontein, was among only

two finalists from the Western Cape totake part in the recent national Applica-tions Olympiad.Of the 10 983 who entered the Olympi-

ad, only ten finalists countrywidereached the final round, which was heldat Bergvliet High in Cape Town duringthe winter school holiday.Woodall did his school and province

proud by ending as a runner-up in thecompetition.

“The Olympiad challenges partici-pants to use common computer applica-tions such as word processors, spread-sheets and databases to solve a set ofproblems,” explains convener MichaelCameron.The final round included two one-hour

tests and a four-hour project on thetheme of the Summer Olympic Games.“The project required them to prepare

an A3 info poster which the Olympiccommittee can use in schools to promotethe Olympics,” he says.During the project they also had to

teach themselves a new skill that is notin the school curriculum.“For this they were given an eight-page document headed ‘How to cre-ate a pivot table and manipulateit’”.“I was amazed to see what com-

puters cando,”Woodall commentedafter the project.At the awards dinner Barbara

Although the day to day cost of livingin Cape Town is a challenge for manylocals, and leisure activities as an ex-

pense may not fit into the budget, it is stillpossible for locals to enjoy their city, saysGareth Bloor, Mayco member for tourism,events and economic development, follow-ing the city’s big win at this year’s Traveland Leisure World’s Best Awards.

Cape Town was named winner in the cat-egory “Top Cities in Africa and the MiddleEast”, during a ceremony held in NewYork on Wednesday 6 July.

“There is a variety of free and low-costthings to do and see that make it possiblefor locals to get out and enjoy the city.There are parks and beaches, with hikeson the mountain and in nature. In fact, oneof Cape Town Tourism’s most popular pa-ges on their blog is called ‘50 things to dofor under R50 in Cape Town’,” he said inan interview withTygerBurger.Bloor saysthis award is good news – not only for thetourism sector, but to the local economy asa whole.

“Besides airlines, hotels and other formsof accommodation, the tourist rand isspent on restaurants, transport, retail andother activities not necessarily consideredto be tourism activities. The entire supplychain is impacted by increased tourism,supporting local food producers, farmersand local manufacturers, employment op-portunities and providing job sustainabili-ty,” he said.

“Raising the global profile of the city canattract international investment and alsogenerate interest in the city as a potentialhost city for business, sports events andconferences.”

When asked about inflated tourism pri-ces most locals cannot afford, Bloor saysmany of these attractions have “bucketlist” status and is worth saving up for.

“The big attractions are the reason manyinternational visitors travel across theworld for this ‘bucket list’ experience, sowhile they may come with a price tag, weshould see that they are worth saving upfor on our own bucket lists as locals,” hesays.

He adds that many of the local attrac-tions have specials aimed at locals, “suchas the free Table Mountain Cableway tripon your birthday on presentation of aSouth African identity document, or opendays at some of SanParks’ destinationswhere there are reduced fees or no fees atall”.

Bloor says the tourism market offersmany alternatives for locals.

“Hike up to the top of Table Mountainalong one of the many hiking trails whichare so popular among international visi-tors, or take a budget boat trip in the har-bour,” he says.

Bloor warns that local tourism business-es should guard against pricing them-selves out of the market in favour of inter-national visitors.

He says Cape Town Tourism is deter-mined to showcase the entire city – includ-ing the northern suburbs, Atlantic sea-board and Blaauwberg coast.

Another fatal collisionA Brackenfell man died last week in acrash on Klipheuwel Road, Durbanville.

Willem Brand was travelling in thedirection of Durbanville in his Toyotabakkie when the accident occurred atabout 20:15 last Friday night (1 July).

According to a police spokesperson,Brand lost control of his vehicle nearEensgezind farm, and collided head-oninto a VW truck travelling in thedirection of Malmesbury.

A case of culpable homicide is beinginvestigated by the Durbanville police.

Sometimes she can be heard cacklingclauses of this book while stirring hercauldron at night.

Reconciling these witches and theirneighbours mightvery well be animpossible task,but the least I cando is try.

Extensive experi-ence in this fieldobliges me to tellall you goodneighbours that it’sbest not to feed thewitch.

Don’t give herany reason to go onthe attack. Thisincludes having apetition signed by

all the other neighbours to force her tobe more civilised.

She will only grow more evil by theday, and one should never underestimateblack magic.

Don’t give her reason to hurl quotedparagraphs of the rule book at you. Thismeans you will have to know it at leasthalf as well as she does. Try to livewithin these rules, which are definitelyjust. Remember, the witch didn’t writethis book. She just enforces it in anunrelenting way.

Perhaps the best advice I can give is toflatly ignore her. She craves attention, sodon’t give her any.

Some of these witches like cookingchildren, so keep yours away from herfront door at all times.

Witches hate the carefree laughter ofchildren and refuse to acknowledge thatthey too cried loudly every now andagain when they were young.

Finally, to the witches of the northernsuburbs – please, for the love of allthings good in this world, give it a rest.

“It is time to jump into the lake andswim with the big boys.”These are the words of George

Kattan (25) who is currently the fourthstrongest powerlifter in the world.Last year at the Global Powerlifting Com-

mittee championship in Las Vegas, Georgecompeted with 15 of the strongest under-90kg lifters in the world.“It was my first world champs competing

against the very best. It was quite an experi-ence and the experience of competing withthose guys is extremely valuable to say theleast. You learn so much by just watchingthem. I was successful with a 280kg squat,180kg bench press and 290kg deadlift givingme a total of 750kg. It was a special momentI will treasure forever,” says George.

National championshipLast month Rhino Powerlifting Club host-

ed the national championship in Durbanwhere he bettered his total to 755kg. Georgewaseventually oustedbyGauteng lifter Jacode Waal who is the fifth strongest powerlift-er of all timeand the strongest SouthAfricanin the sport ever by a big margin.In powerlifting a formula is used using the

lifter’s bodyweight and weight lifted to de-termine who is “pound for the pound” thestrongest.Come Saturday 8 October, Kattan will

move up inweight and compete in the under100kg division. There is no denying that hecan compete with the bigger boys. Beingused to weighing around 89kg on competi-tion days, George currently pulls the scaleat 95kg.“My body is responding well and I feel I

am moving in the right direction. It is allabout improving your totals,” he says.

Not bodybuilding“You have to eat correctly, but not clean.
