Get on board withCasual DaySOUTH Africa’s biggestfundraising project for per-sonswithdisabilities,Casu-al Day, raised R20 315 451through the 2011 project.

About 400 organisationsrendering services in the fieldof disability, via the struc-tures of six major, nationalbeneficiaries, benefit fromthis money.Casual Day is a successful

initiative of the NationalCouncil for Persons withPhysical Disabilities in SouthAfrica (NCPPDSA).The annual Casual Day

event has become a staple onthe calendars of corporateSouth Africa, providing aneasy and fun-filled way tomake a positive contribution.The opportunity for office

camaraderie is welcomed aseach year on the first Fridayof September, people are en-couraged to wear somethingdifferent to what they usuallydo, wearing the sticker as anendorsement of the serious

sentiment behind the light-hearted change in dress code.Annelise de Jager, Casual

Day national project organis-er, is upbeat about theachievement of the 2011 cam-paign and encourages eachand every South African toparticipate in the 18th CasualDay event on Friday, 7 Sep-tember.“Our accomplishments

over the last 17 years weremade possible by the on-goingparticipationof thepublicandthe huge effort the participat-ing NGOs make fund-raisingand promoting the cause ofpersons with disabilities. Weare continually gratified bythe participation of South Af-ricans in this project. CasualDay raises more than justmoney – it raises awarenessand helps us get closer to thefully integrated society wehope to achieve.”Eachyear thedisbursement

of the proceeds is done afterthe audit in February and di-rectors of the sixnational ben-

eficiary organisations re-ceived their share of the fundson 2 March.The 2012 theme, however, is

“Get on Board”, which is in-spired by a naval and boatingtheme.Whilst the public is encour-

aged to dress like a captain,sailor or pirate, the implica-tion is that wearing the stick-er is the endorsement to showthat you did in fact, get onboard with Casual Day.The dedicated team at the

national Casual Day officework year round putting theevent together making it easyandconvenient to participate.Get your sticker from any

A group of volunteers fromGreenPopplantedmore than50 in-digenous trees in the garden at thenew outdoor eco classroom that isunder construction at Ikhaya Pri-mary in Kayamandi.“The Stellenbosch community

is under threat of losing one of itslast publicly owned renosterveldoutcrops – thehistorichill ofPape-gaaiberg,” says Dr Leanne Seel-iger of the Vuya Endaweni Com-munity Conservation Partner-ship. “Surrounded by theindustrial area of Plankenbrug,the informal settlement of En-kanini (part of Kayamandi),Middelvlei Farm, Oude Libertasand the Onder-Papegaaiberg resi-dential suburb, this threatenedecosystem runs the risk of beinglost to future generations.“In an attempt to prevent this

and create awareness among Kay-amandi residents, teachers andlearners – as well as the broadercommunityofStellenbosch–of theimportance of this threatened eco-system, the Vuya Endaweni Com-munityConservationPartnershiphas started thecreationof this out-door eco classroom and indige-nous garden with some fundingfrom Distell.”Anumberofgroupswillworkto-

Back care – the risks and the tipsSEPTEMBERdoes not onlymark the start of spring– it isalsothestartofnationalBackWeek,anannualeventhostedby theSouthAfricanSocietyofPhysio-therapy to promote back health and educate peopleon how to stay injury-free.

This year national Back Week runs for two weeks,from 3 to 16 September.According to Margaret van den Heever, physiothera-

pist at the Stellenbosch University Sport PerformanceInstitute (Suspi), statistics show that 75% to 85% of allpeople over 30 will experience back problems at somepoint in their lives.“If you ask anyone if they know someone who suffers

from back pain, the answer will most likely be yes, asbackpainis thesecondmostcommonreasonpeoplevisita physician.”VandenHeever saysanumberof commonrisk factors

can lead to back pain.These include:) being unfit – back pain is usually more common in

people with low levels of physical fitness;) being overweight – too much weight, especially

around yourwaist, can put stress on the back and causepain and injury;

) your job – not only jobs where you have to lift carryor push heavy objects can lead to back pain: the sameis true of office jobs where you have to remain seatedbehind a desk for long periods;

) yourgenes–certainhereditary illnesses suchanky-losing spondylitis (inflammation of the joints in yourspine) can lead to back pain;

) gettingolder– thediscsandjoints inyourbackexpe-rience wear and tear that in due course might lead toback pain. This usually becomes more evident in yourlate thirties or forties

) smoking – puffing away deprives the discs in yourbackfromabsorbingthenutrients theyneedtomaintainoptimum health, and smokers tend to be slow healers,so they usually suffer with their back pain for longer;To stave off back pain, Van den Heever recommends:( maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight if

you need to – having a balanced diet will help with this,as well as provide the necessary calcium and vitaminD you need to keep your bones strong;

( exercising regularly to help keep your body andback muscles strong.

( rememberingtositorstandwiththecorrectposture– avoid slumping or standing with hunched shoulders,and when you have to lift something, bend with yourlegs and keep your back straight.The Suspi physiotherapy unit supports national Back

Week, and is offering free back assessments to individu-alswhomight either be suffering fromback pain orwhowant advice and guidance on how to prevent injuringtheir backs in the future.For further information, send an email to 2 sport-
