riders can expect, saying: “Aftermov-ing the race to its newhomeatLeBon-heur Wine Estate last year, the feed-backfromridershasbeenoverwhelm-ingly positive. Developing trails inthis area is part of our legacy project,so we didn’t want to simply rehash2014’s routes. Instead, we’ve intro-duced new scenic and shady areas forriders. We’ve also incorporated a lotmore single-track sections – the mostin the history of this event – and hopethat this contributes toouraimof con-tinuously improving the overall expe-rience for our participants.”The two shorter routes (14 km and

22 km) take place on Saturday 28 Feb-ruary. Aspiring MTB-ers looking toenjoyascenicride throughthebeauti-ful Stellenbosch winelands are en-couraged to secure their entries assoon as possible, with 600 entries stillavailable for the 14 km route, and 800for the 22 km route. The MTB Challenge’s longer and

Be open about moneyIn light of themonthofFebrua-ry, synonymously linked to themonth where acknowledge-ment of those we love leads togreater focus on relationships, another importantaspect tore-view and focus on is moneymatters.

“Couples who are dating gener-ally have not had sit-down con-versations about managing fi-nances together,” says Eunice Si-biya, Head of FNB consumereducation, “but the reality is thatinformal management of yourmoney in a relationship can takea chunk out of your pocket.”Financial matters are incredi-

bly personal and have to be han-dled with sensitivity as it is soeasy for one party to feel inade-quate because they don’t have anequal amount of money to spendor feel as though theymight comeacross as stingy if theydon’twantto go out or ask for their share ofmoney back after they have paidfor something.Sibiya highlights the following

situations that, if aware of, can bemanaged in the right way so thatawkward money moments areavoided.Keeping upwith your couple

friendsA few couples spending time to-

gether wining and dining is al-ways fun, however make surethat you and your partner arehonest with one another aboutthe amount of times and the typesof activitiesyouareable to fit intoyour monthly budget.“While you don’t have to dis-

close all your budget details toone another, it is worthwhile tofill your partner in at the begin-ning of the month about whatyour financial outlook for thenext 30 days is. That way, bothparties can act proactively wheninvited to events rather than oneparty accepting the invitationjust for the other to advise thatthey are not able to accommodate

the event in their budget,” sug-gests Sibiya.Don’t split the bill equallyAlthough it is much easier to

split the bill equally to avoid thetedious process of dividing it cor-rectly, the conveniencemight notbeworthwhat it does to your bud-get, unless of course you hadmore or less the same meals anddrinks.Whilst you will pay less if your

meal was more expensive thanyour partner’s, it is very likelythat you could be the one payingmore than what you would haveif you paid only your share.“It is wonderful to be at the

stage in a relationship whereboth parties are comfortablewithjust dividing the bill in half, butif you are deliberately choosingyourmeals according towhatyoucanafford, having to paymore be-cause the bill is split equallycould mean having less to spendon a another item in your budgetfor the rest of the month,” notesSibiya.Don’t make a fuss about this,

just tell your partner that you or-der based onyourbudget and thatsplitting thebill throwsyourbud-get off. If this is a ground rule younever need to have the conversa-tion again.“You can grab the next one”How often do we tell our part-

ner: “Don’t worry, you can grabthe next one” Or “This one is onme”?Although these are caring or of-

tenconveniencegestures toavoidhaving to swipe two cards, youmight be surprised to what theserandom costs of paying for yourpartner add up to especially ifyour partner tends to be forgetfuland you do not alternate betweensuch payments.“Don’t be shy to raise this –

there is nothing wrong with re-minding your partner that youpaid the previous bill – it can bedone in a loving and caring wayand could be the difference be-

tween surviving the month orhaving to start living off credit,”says Sibiya.Informal living arrange-

mentsManycouples don’t stay togeth-

er permanently but sleeping overever so often is not out of thenorm. Whilst it is true that onecan cut on costs and wastagewhen living together permanent-ly, quite the opposite is true of in-formal living arrangements. There is a certain level of com-

mitment and financial conversa-tions that come with the decisiontomove in together, butwhenyoujustvisit, particularly ifyousleepover more often at one partner’splace, one party can very easilyincur more costs than what theywould ordinarily have to.Household expenses such as

electricity andwater and grocerycosts are bound to increase withyour partner staying over fre-quently, but due to the informalsleepovers they are unlikely tocontribute to these bills, result-ing in your monthly expenses to-wards this increasing.“Drawupabudget to showyour

partner how your living costs in-crease and ask them whetherthey are willing to contribute to-wards electricity as an example, the cleaning service or buyingfood for supper in theperiods thatthey stay over,” suggests Sibiya.Managing the above circum-

stances well can have a positiveeffect on both couples who aredating as well as those in longterm relationships.“Be realistic about where you

are in your relationship andabout what you and your partnercan afford, not only for your cur-rent circumstances, but also ifyou are saving towards certainmilestones like awedding or chil-dren. Honest conversations onany matter, especially finances, are invaluable and can avoid bit-terness, irritability and moneyfights lateron,”concludesSibiya.

Beware of the everpresent business debt trapWhenwe talk about a debttrap, the first thing thatcomes to mind is consum-er debt. Although it canruin your finances due tothe interest payable, re-member that You the En-trepreneur views debtfromthebusinessowner’sperspective. Therefore, whenItalkof

adebt trap, I talkabout theamountofcredityougrantto clients, the amount that is owed toyou for products or services alreadyrendered. The big problem is thatyour books indicate that you haveearned an income, but you have nocash flow. Many businesses suffer because of

cash constraints. Your business mayhave many assets and healthy sales, butwithout enoughcash flowing intoyour business, you cannot pay youraccounts. Many businesses go into liquida-

tion because they cannot pay theircreditors.Small business owners are often

tempted to grant credit just to get thebusiness, but they cannot really af-ford it.The best way for a small or micro

enterprise tooperate isonacash-only

basis. We can learn fromthebig retailerswhoworkon a cash only business. When the consumer buysfrom them, he / she maypaywith a credit card, butthe business receives itsmoney immediately.Credit brings a lot of ex-

tra administration. Youmust now keep track ofwho owes what to yourbusiness plus send them

an account or statement at the end ofeach month. This makes for a lot more admin

and requires extra staff just to earnthe samemoney. On topof that, you’llneed an attorney to collect themoneyif people do not pay their accounts. If you really deem it necessary to

sell on credit, limit the amount ofcredit you’ll grant by the measure ofwhether you can afford to lose thatamount if the client(s) cannot pay.If youcannotafford to lose it, donot

grant the credit.Youmay say I amhard on business

owners, but rather safe than sorry.Your future income is dependent ona surviving business.

Two Oceans entries closein record time, substituteentries now openEntries for the 2015 Old Mutual TwoOceans UltraMarathon have once againclosed in record time – a month beforethe official closing date.

The 46th Ultra Marathon, taking place onEaster Saturday (4 April), will see about11 000 ultra runners navigate their wayaround the 56 km route that enjoys interna-tional acclaim as theworld’smost beautifulmarathon.

Participants who have not yet updatedtheir qualifying race results are remindedto do so by 4 March.

All Ultra Marathon runners are requiredtohave completed at least one fullmarathon(42,2km) after 1 July 2014 in under fivehours.

South African ultra marathon entrants

are also required to belong to a registeredrunning club and have a valid running li-cence, and are reminded to check and up-date their club details before 4 March. Notemporary licences will be issued to ultramarathon runners. The good news for runners who missed

out on securing an ultra marathon is thatsubstitution entries have now officiallyopened, giving athletes who can no longerparticipate the opportunity to “hand over”their entry to another runner.Haile GebrselassieFurther exciting news for the race orga-

nisers is that Olympic great, Haile Gebrse-lassie, will visit the Mother City in April.“We are absolutely thrilled to have Haile

Gebrselassie support the world’s mostbeautiful marathon,” says Stefanie Schult-zen, TwoOceansMarathonmarketingman-ager.“Ithasalwaysbeenourdreamtohavehim

at our race, and we are over the moon thatour technical sponsor adidas will be bring-ing him out to South Africa.”Schultzen adds that the 41-year-old inter-

national icon will be supporting the eventsforming part of the Two Oceans Marathon, which will include a visit to the Old MutualTwo Oceans Marathon Expo. He will not berunning.R1 million bonusIn addition to the prize money that can

be won by the ultramarathonwinners, titlesponsor Old Mutual once again offers aR1 million bonus to the winning male andfemale runner who respectively breaks therecord for the 56 kmultramarathon in 2015.Themen’s record of 3:03:44 was set in 1988

byroadrunning legendThompsonMagawa-na, while Frith van der Merwe set the wom-en’s record a year later in 1989 when sheran 3:30:36.The closest any runner has come since

then is Zimbabwean Marko Mambo, whoran 3:05:39 in 2005, andwhohaswon the racethree times.Russian Olesya Nurgalieva ran the sec-

ond fastest women’s time in 2008 when shecrossed the finish line in 3:34:53.

Varsity Cup 2015 kicks off with major clashbetween Maties and arch-rivals IkeysThe FNB Varsity Cup, presentedby Steinhoff International, is al-most back and ready to rock witha new innovations and evenmoreexcitement set to formpart of thisyear’s competition.

The 2015 season kicked off yester-day with a match between Matiesand Ikeys in Cape Town. At the timeof going to press the result of thismatch was not available yet. Thismatch will, however, set the scenefor the local Maties team and can bean indication of what can be expect-ed from the maroon jerseys in thisyear’s competition. On of the exciting innovations is

the return of the White Card. The white card, which allows

coaches and captains to refer deci-sions for review to television match

officials (TMOs) during games, wasfirst introduced during the inaugu-ral Varsity Cup competition in 2008.The system is back this year and isendorsed by the South African Rug-by Union (SARU).This is just another way Varsity

Cup ensures it remains at the fore-front of sporting innovation and as-sist SARU in testing ideas. This sea-son will also see the addition of thedefensive scrumhalf. The defensivescrumhalf is a simple change inrules where the scrumhalf defend-ing the scrum will not be allowed topass themouthof the scrumonce theball has been inserted. In otherwords, the defending scrumhalf willnot be allowed to follow theball.Var-sity Cup hopes that this rule will en-courage a running rugby style ofplay and diminish the breakdowns

at the scrum.Founder of the competition,

formerSpringbokscaptainFrancoisPienaar, believes that this year willbe even bigger and better than lastyear.“This year is a very exciting year

for Varsity Cup Rugby. The returnof the white card presents us witha unique opportunity to trial some-thing that we could one day see usedin international rugby. Sport cannotafford to stagnate in this day and ageand it is important that it evolveswith the players in mind. The whitecard is there to ensure the correctdecision is always made,” said Pie-naar.The 2014 edition saw UCT Ikeys

crowned champions after an em-phatic comeback. Ikeys scored threetries in five minutes to beat North-

West University (Pukke) 39-33 afterbeing 33-15 behind and Duitser Bos-man, CEO of Varsity Sports, hopesthat this year’s competition will beequally exciting.“We saw some brilliant rugby

played last year andbelieve that thisyear will be no different. The excite-ment around the tournament has re-ally comeof age in the last fewyears. The crowds have been brilliant, butmost importantly, we have seen theVarsity Cup be a springboard forplayers to launch their career,” Bos-man explained. The competition is also a spring-

board for players to further their ca-reers. Last year’s Currie Cup finalsaw 29 of the 44 players come froma pool of ex-Varsity Cup players, evi-dence that the platform is breedingsome of the best talent in the coun-

try.As usual, there will be hotly con-

tested derby matches between IkeysvsMaties aswell as Shimlas vs CUT,UJ vs Tuks & last year’s final repeatIkeys vs Pukke in Potchefstroom. There will be two televised fixtureson SuperSport 201 each week tomake sure that the rugby keeps onrocking. The competition would not have

been able to grow were it not for thecontinued support from the spon-sors, something Bosman feels is tes-tament to the quality of the competi-tion.“With First National Bank (FNB),

Steinhoff International, Spur andCell C continuing their commitmentto sponsorship, it underscores whata great product we have,” Bosmanconcluded.

Off-road triathletes taking on the action-packed Totalsports Xterra this comingSunday, now have more reason to pull out all the stops as the event organisersannounced a whopping prize purse increase of R80 000, taking the overall prizepurse to an impressive total of R249 000.
