Linda Hannival says she was devastated when she heard granite slabs which formed the tombstone of the triple grave had been stolen and the grave site destroyed. During a site visit last week, tears flow as Hannival recalls the horrible ordeal. The grave site, she explains, was used to bury several members of the Van Graan fam- ily – including her parents. “It’s a triple grave and we decided after the passing of my mom that we would now seal it up. Three granite slabs were placed over it and a tombstone with their pictures and the family name was put on the grave. Here we would come to feel closer to our relatives. This is just heartbreaking.” The theft was discovered by her brother and the family reported the case to Kensing- ton police for investigation. Hannival says over the years they had be- come accustomed to the theft of small objects placed on the grave – like flowers and vases – but never imagined that thieves would steal heavy granite slabs. As she places fresh flowers in the damaged grave site she points towards the concrete edges and says: “Look at this. You can see that some form of machinery or tools were used to remove this. Whoever stole it knew what they were doing”. The incident has raised various questions about safety at the cemetery as the family questions how three big slabs were removed and taken without cemetery staff noticing. “The cemetery is supposed to be locked at night but one has to wonder how they got it done and what vehicle was used.” City of Cape Town Mayco member for community services and special projects, Belinda Walker, says they are aware and condemn such disrespectful and inconsider- ate behaviour. She says there have been spo- radic incidents of gravestone theft and van- dalism in this cemetery but there has been no other reports of gravestone theft in the past year. “All incidents of theft of this na- ture are reported to the Kensington Police Station as a criminal case (desecration of graves). We rely heavily on the assistance of local police and law enforcement personnel to assist City Parks in addressing problems of vagrancy and theft in this cemetery.” V To page 2.

Penny’s Market and Friends, supportingthe Golden Age Seniors Club, will be holdingits art, craft and food market on 5 March atthe Bothasig community hall (behind Super-plants) from 08:30 to 14:30. The venue haschanged due to voter registration taking placeat the Edgemead community hall. For moreinformation contact Merle on 082 426 0332.

Edgemead resident Clifford James was re-cently crowned as the Weigh-Less Man of theYear after he lost almost 40 kilograms.

Clifford (51), a customer relations andmarketing manager at SMG Cape TownBMW, says he got his wake up call from hisdoctor. “My health was suffering very badly– high blood pressure, cholesterol, anxietyattacks, breathing issues ... the list is end-less. When my doctor gave me 10 years tops, well, that was it. I turned a new page.”

Clifford, who is also a personal trainer, said he realised early on that there’s noquick fix when it comes to weight loss.

“You have to do it for yourself and it’s cer-tainly not easy.

“When I do motivational speaking, I talkabout the holy diet three: mind, body and nu-trition. If the mind is set, the body and nutri-tion will follow. Never put yourself on a diet, rather change your lifestyle with healthyeating, exercise and positive thought.

“I have now been on my goal weight fornearly four years after losing 38,6kg in total,so I am walking, living proof that Weigh-Less works.”

Lifestyle weighs heavily on diet

Walker explains the Maitland cemetery isa very large cemetery (113 ha) with manypoints of access and is therefore difficultto secure entirely.

She says with any facility that size, withmany dark areas and many points of ac-cess, it is impossible to ensure that it is100% secure, but the City has done all thatit can within available resources to secureit as far as possible.

“If loiterers or vagrants are found in thecemetery after hours, they are instructedto move.

“Vandalism in cemeteries has alwaysbeen a matter of concern for the City andwe appeal to residents to work with us byreporting any suspicious activity at oraround the cemetery to Law Enforcementon 021 596 1999 or to the South African Po-lice Service. We also urge residents to

make certain thattombstones and gran-ite slabs are well se-cured on the graves tohelp prevent removalof the items.”

Responding to ques-tions about security, she says the cemeteryhas 24-hour securityguards who patrol theperimeter of the ceme-tery.

The boundary fencehas also been upgrad-ed recently, but it has been repeatedlyvandalised. City Parks attends to repairs.

All legal entrances are locked at night.Asked how a vehicle containing three

large slabs left the cemetery unnoticed,

Walker again says: “Security guards pa-trol the perimeter of the cemetery 24/7.The City Parks Department has taken thisup with the security company hired to se-cure the cemetery”.

Bothasig police revel in successBRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

Bothasig police have warned criminalsthat they will be tried and convictedif they are caught committing crime.

This follows several convictions in the pre-cinct in the last week.

According to police spokesperson War-rant Officer Jacques Mostert the convic-tions send a strong message to would-becriminals that they will end up in jail.

“It has a calming effect on the communitywhen they see that the criminal justice sys-tem works,” says Mostert.

A 35-year-old man from Bothasig was con-victed for possession of drugs as he wascaught with mandrax at a known drug den.

The court imposed a fine of R3000 or threemonths’ imprisonment.

A 63-year-old suspect from Richwood wasarrested for driving under the influence ofliquor during December 2013.

The case was finalised recently and he re-ceived a sentence of R3000 or three months’imprisonment.

In a case of malicious damage to propertya suspect who damaged the vehicle of a com-plainant by kicking it when she dropped offanother person was ordered to pay a fine ofR4000 or spend 80 days in prison and R2000and 40 days were suspended for four years.

Finally, a 32-year-old man paid an admis-sion of guilt fine of R200 after he wascharged with assault following an incidentwhere he grabbed a woman by her hair and

pushed her against a cigarette machine.Station commander, Lieutenant-Colonel

Patrick Jacobs, praised Captain NelisFranken and his team for the good work insecuring the good convictions. He warnedperpetrators that all cases are important tothe Bothasig police and will receive the ut-most attention. “If the public thinks thatsome cases are more important than others, this is not true as can be seen in these con-victions. People should think twice beforecommitting a crime as convictions likethese will leave them with a criminalrecord. Even if the fines imposed do notseem that serious, it could for example ham-per future employment,” warns Jacobs.

He says highlighting convictions showcommunities that police and courts work.

Kraaminrigting nou ’n gastehuisBRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

Howes is inderdaad reg, want die inrig-ting was by nommer 20 en staan nou as dieGlen Lily-gastehuis bekend.

Residents living in Melkbosstrand andthe greater Table View area are ad-vised to remain calm when hearing

the Koeberg sirens today (Wednesday). This week Eskom officials will be con-

ducting a full-volume test of the Koeberg si-rens and according to a statement, if neces-sary, retestingwill be performedon individ-ual sirens on Thursday and Friday.Various communities in the 16kmUrgent

Protective Action Zone (UPZ) will be affect-ed, but officials warn residents to remaincalm as this is only a test. The Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Pub-

licWarning Systemhas been installedwith-in the UPZ around the station as per theKoeberg Emergency Plan to notify resi-dents andvisitors to the area in theunlikelyevent of an emergency at Koeberg PowerStation.“Koeberg uses a radio system, which con-

trols the communication between the con-trol centres and each individual siren. Com-munication checks are performed daily andany sirens not inworking conditions are re-paired as soon as possible. A weekly check

is also conducted to power up the siren am-plifiers to check their functionality. Thesetests are silent, and you will most likely beunaware of the tests being performed at anygiven time. Once a year though, as is legallyrequired and a world best practice, a fullvolume test is performed in order to checkthat the sirens are audible.”The duration of the test is approximately

fifteen minutes per siren, and consists of avoice clip indicating that a test is being per-formed, and the sound of the nuclear alarm(slow rising tone). This is where residentsare needed to play their part in the KoebergEmergency Plan.Should you be in the vicinity of a siren

that is not working on the day that the testis performed, please contact Koeberg Stake-holder Management on 021 550 5227 or021 550 5758. Individual sirens that do notoperate as expected may be retested onThursday and Friday. The dates of the test have also been high-

lighted in the annual Koeberg emergencycalendar, which residents will have re-ceived during January. The calendar ex-plains the levels of emergency that may oc-cur at Koeberg, what to do in case of suchan emergency. Residents that have not re-ceived one of these calendars, can contactStakeholder Management at the aforemen-tioned contact numbers.Koeberg Stakeholder Management man-

ager, Lewis Phidza, says its important forresidents not to panic as tests like these areconducted by nuclear power plants acrossthe globe.“It is a best practice to do so. These tests

are done in order to make sure that ourneighbours are involved in our nuclearemergency plan so that they know what todo andwhat is expected from them. The keyobjective is to make sure that they do notbe surprised and end up panickingwhen, inan unluckily event of an emergency at Koe-berg Nuclear Power Station, they hear thesirens sounded on full volume. We thankthe media, relevant authorities who arepart of our emergency plan, our neighboursand all stakeholders for all the collabora-tion work with regard to Koeberg emergen-cy planning. Lastly we thank our EskomKoeberg Power Station nuclear profession-als and all contractors/suppliers for operat-ing andmaintaining the plant safely for thepast 30 years and more, and we encouragethemtodo the sameuntil andduringdecom-missioning in future.”

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

He was a strong-willed and tenaciousold man and deserves to be remem-bered.

This was probably what the young internat the Metro Evangelical Services (MES)had in mind when he contacted TygerBur-ger to share the death of “Oom Dawie” –“just Oom Dawie” – with us.

The death of one more vagrant might notbe that newsworthy to the folk of Bellvillewhere oom Dawie lived on the streets heshared with its more affluent citizens intheir shiny big cars, but to some people,Oom Dawie was a hero.

He left a legacy of strength and endurancebehind, and someone needed to say hisname out loud to validate that he had liveda full life and was a well-known member ofBellville’s other community – its homelessfolk.

Arthur Makhuri is the MES intern whosemessage about Oom Dawie’s passing andthe subsequent funeral arrangements camethrough to TygerBurger last week.

The elderlymanwas laid to rest onFridayat the Bellville Presbyterian church, and asthey had been inseparable in life, his twolifelong street companions,AbbyandEmer-ald, were there to see him into the afterlife.

Arthur tells of Oom Dawie, starting witha scripture message from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8:“There is a time for everything, and a sea-son for every activity under the heavens: atime to be born and a time to die.”

He says Oom Dawie was from Johannes-burg and ended up on the streets of CapeTown because of “family disputes”.

“He was a strong and tenacious man. Healways held his head up high and was con-stantly fighting for himselfwithout backingout,” Arthur says. “He spent most of his fi-nal years on the streets of Bellville andwould constantly come to MES to also usethe services provided.

“He was very close to Abby and Emerald. They were like a family and the three werevery much inseparable.”

Arthur says Oom Dawie’s home on thestreets was his most recent sleeping spotoutside the Bellville Police Station fromwhich he and his kind were evicted, andpreviously near the Bellville Market.

The people closest to him in his last daysbesides his two companions, were the restof the MES staffers.

One outreach worker tells: “When OomDawie was going through something, hewould keep quiet and sometimes get aggres-sive, especially if someone stepped on histoes or was in his space.”

The outreach team found Oom Dawie onthe streets in early 2014. Arthur says MESintervened and tried to get him into a suita-ble home where he would get better care. But a life on the streets also means freedom.“He would run away from the old age home, saying the place was ‘like a jail’,” Arthur re-calls.

The receptionist at MES was very closeto Oom Dawie.

She had a soft spot for him, Arthur says, understood his personality and knew hiscondition. “She took care of Oom Dawie. She would make him food and ensure hetook his medication. Even when he some-times refused and spat it out, shewould findotherways to ensurehe tookhismedicationafter his meals.”

Some of the others remember his sense ofhumour and charm: “We are going to misshim, especially when he would say ‘Hellomissy. Ooh but you look lovely’. He alwayshad a sweet smile on his face,” says MESmanager Ilse Els.

Oom Dawie’s life on the street could haveturned him into steel, yet he always had acompliment at the ready forhisMESpeople. He could have been anyone’s father orgrandfather had life dealt him a differenthand with different choices.

“May his gracious spirit rest in peace.”V Share your thoughts about Oom Dawie with usat [email protected].

“My eerste prioriteit gaan wees om dieprobleemhuis by Nelsonstraat te pak.”

I am very impressed by Princi-pal Inspector Desré Benadiefrom the Bellville trafficdepartment.I have previously voiced my

dismay here about the numberof drivers that ignore theone-way streets in Boston, andin particular in 15th Avenue.I took up the issue with Desré

Benadie and she undertook toinvestigate and action thematter. Indeed she did. Trafficofficers started law enforcementin the area. On the two occa-sions that they were in the areathey issued more than 20 fines.Desré also undertook via

skadu wees.

Behalwe vir bogenoemde was

Parvovirus a costly killerMICHELLE LINNERT

@linnertmb

You waited your whole lifeto buy a Rottweiler puppyand when you can finally

afford one, it gets parvovirusand dies within two weeks afteryou bought it from the breeder.

This is the scenario involvinga disgruntled couple after theybought a puppy from a breederwho charges R6000 per puppy.

The man got a 50% discountfrom the breeder, his col-league’s wife, and was able topick up the longed-for puppywithin weeks after its birth, andwith only one more injection togo.

However, the puppy almostimmediately got gravely ill.

“I had incurred costs from thevet when I rushed my dog to theanimal clinic in Kenilworth aft-er it had developed parvovirus, but it was already too late. Theysaid they could try to help him, but chan-ces were that he wouldn’t pull through,”said the man, who asked not to be named.

It would have cost him R15 000, he said,to have the puppy treated, but he and hiswife decided against this and to ratherhave the puppy euthanised, as this was toosteep and the puppy’s odds to survive wereso slim. “If they get this disease, it’s basi-cally over for them.”

The man said when they collected thepuppy, the breeder said it was due for onelast inoculation.

Final vaccination“When we got there, we were told the

dog still needed its final vaccination. Weonly had the dog for two weeks. The breed-er failed to get the third injection.”

After the dog died, the couple had a disa-greement with the breeder, who they saidrefused to reimburse them, or allow themto have a new puppy.

“The breeder told us the breed was verysusceptible to this virus and there wasnothing they could have done differently. It’s always been a childhood dream ofmine to own a Rottweiler. I saved up to buythis one,” he said.TygerBurger put the question to the

staff at the Tygerberg Animal Hospital(TAH) of what could have been done tosave the puppy in this instance, and whatothers can do should they suspect the vi-rus in their own dog.

According to veterinarian Dr Ryan Nor-rie, they see a lot of darker coloured dogsbeing infected with the parvovirus.

“We do happen to see a lot of what wecall black and tan dogs, such as Rottweil-ers and German shepherds, but all dogsare susceptible to the virus. Some dogshave a stronger immune system than oth-ers,” he said.

According to him, prices for treatmentvary based on the treatment plan followedand the number of days a puppy will stayin isolation – a highly sterilised roomwhere the animal is kept separate fromother patients.

“When a dog or puppy is admitted intoisolation, they will be placed on a drip thatwill contain a number of antibiotics, painmedication, and a five-course dewormer.

“Glucose, proteins and electrolytes arecontinuously checked in order to tailortreatment where needed. If a patient is notimproving with the initial treatment plan, then we will formulate a new one until wefind one that is accepted,” he said.

Norrie added it was vital that the pa-tient is kept hydrated and fed – a “big chal-lenge, as the patient will suffer from diar-rhoea and vomiting”.

ForcefedAt this point the patient can be given an-

ti-nausea and anti-ulcer medication, andis usually force-fed with new syringeswith every feed. However, sometimes na-sal feeding with tubes becomes necessary,he said.

TAH will bathe the patient often and ap-ply petroleum jelly and baby powder tosensitive areas because of the constant di-arrhoea, with fresh bedding given with ev-ery bath.

“The isolation ward, equipment, doc-tors, nurses and orderlies are constantlybeing sprayed with F10 to ensure the virusis not spread,” Norrie said.

Their isolation ward is also monitoredaround the clock, with calming musicplaying in the room and staff dedicated togiving the patients love.

“We find that extra love and TLC canmake a difference to a scared and de-pressed fur baby. It is very important tohave constant monitoring as you justdon’t know with parvovirus!”

Black and tan dogs seem to be more susceptible to the deadly parvovirus. PHOTO: MARYANN PALMER

They say dynamite comes insmall packages and LeeliaJay is proving just that.

The pint-sized singer from Cen-turyCitywill be launchinghermu-sic video for her track “Whind itLow” at Club Galaxy in Rylandsnext week, but this isn’t her firstforay into the local hip-hop scene.Like many artists, Leelia grew

up surrounded by music. Her fa-ther used to practise with his bandin their lounge when she was four.“He even bought this little key-board and put stickers on so I couldknow what was what.”She discovered her voice in

school, at Windsor High School, which is where she met her bestfriend “to this day”, Ilse Davis. The two started a girl group

called Illusion and performed pop-ular covers at carnivals and eventsall over Cape Town throughouttheir high school career. After school, Leelia initially

tried to steer away from the musicindustry, pursuing her studies inhotel management instead, but thepeople she met in the hospitalityindustry steered her back to herfirst love.Leelia started her music career

working with the late “legendary”Mischief back in 2009. She met therapper through a friend whilestudying at Cape Audio College, and once he heard her “stuff”, Mis-chief invited her to join his crew,The Hunchmen.“That’s kind of where I started to

come into thiswholehip-hopgame;I guess I just caught a bit of that fe-

ver,” she says.“Mischief basically taught me

how towrite and come intomyownstyle and flow of things,” Leeliacontinues.Fast forward a few years and

she’s almost done recording herstill untitled debut album whichshe plans to release in April. The album contains everything

fromRnBanddance tracks to prop-er hip-hop and even a ballad.“I want everybody to have a fa-

vourite on the album.”“Whind it low” is the first single

off the album which Leelia re-

leased late last year, and it’s al-ready been playlisted on stationslike Bush Radio since January.Leelia describes her sound as “a

bit of a Rihanna vibe.”While she does also rap, there is

a little more singing in her music.“If you listen to my single,

there’s rapping, but I’m singing it.”Her video launch on Friday 11

March will give hip-hop fans achance to see the music video forthe single before it airs on televi-sion channels like Channel O.This won’t be Leelia’s first time

on TV either – a few weeks ago shewas featured on Cape Town TV’sEk Sê and has a lot of radio inter-views behind her.Leelia choreographed her music

video herself and hopes to intro-duce her new dance with the helpof her new dance crew, The DanceDolls.“I hope a lot of people are going

to be winding with me.”The Dance Dolls will be joining

Leelia on stage at the video launch, where fans will get a small taste ofher upcoming album. The audience can also look for-

ward to performances by Some-thingfromthemotherland, Abad-wanguzeli The Natives and AmperAlien.Tickets for Leelia Jay’s video

At RE/MAX Property Centre Bothasig we have made the decision to withdraw from workingin a Co-operative Listing Group and will no longer be part of the local networkingorganisation. While listing groups can have positive results for Sellers we at RE/MAX PropertyCentre will be “Setting our Sails” to change direction and adapt to current marketconditions which we believe will best serve our Sellers and Buyers in going forward. Ourstrategy and unique value proposition together with our sharing culture will allow us to workwith more active Real Estate Companies in the area and to become more flexible to ourSellers and Buyers needs. The secondeditionof the exclu-sive multi stage TransCapeMTBCycle Racewas recently

concluded with four Blouberg-strand mountain bike enthusiastsamong the elite field of 130 adven-turous cyclists who were tested tothe limit on this 750km trek fromKnysna to Franschhoek.StartingatKnysna’sWaterfront,

onSundayFebruary 7, the intrepidgroup of riders, including the localcontingent of Tim Ferreira, BobSchuiling, GrahamThompson andChris Finnegan, were all immedi-ately challenged on the 109kmroute to George.First theyhad to traverseSimola

Hill and then it was on to Gounaroad, Homtini pass and Sevenpasses, climbing a cumulative2716m in the process – a tough taskeven for some of international proriders in the field.Undeterredhowever, the bandof

local riders set about the taskman-fully with Ferreira and Schuiling, riding as team“SumDust”, fairingthe best of the Blouberg cyclists

completing the leg in 5:59:51. Fin-ishing further down the field at theNMMU campus in George, in7:20:40, was the “Miles for Mar-row” team of Thompson and Fin-negan.

Day two wasn’t any easier as theriders set off from George on a121km journey via the Montagupass to Calitzdorp. Having anothergood day in the saddlewere Ferrei-ra and Schuilingwhowere the sev-enth men’s team across the line in6:25:27 with the “Miles for Mar-row” duo getting home in 8:03:47.

The action on the 121km thirdleg of the race from Calitzdorp toRiversdal, which included sum-miting the Rooiberg and Garciapasses, sawFerreira andSchuilingturning up the heat and finishingfifth in the men’s team classifica-tion getting over the line at Lan-genhoven School in Riversdal in5:41:25.

On what was to be the hardestday of the race – stage four fromCalitzdorp to Swellendam – “SumDust” didn’t eat too much dust ona new unforgiving single trackroute as they recorded a time of

6:04:10 to again be the fifth men’steam home on the day.Day five saw Ferreira and

Schuiling clock a time of 4:43:39 forthe 113km leg from Swellendam toGreyton, finishing seventh in themen’s team category for the daywith team “Miles for Marrow” fin-ishing in 6:14:33. In stage six, fromGreyton to Villiersdorp, it wasagain “Sum Dust” who got aheadof Thompson and Finnegan reach-ing the finish line at theAphrodisi-ac Shack in Villiersdorp in 3:57:53and 5:49:43 respectively.Having made it this far the rid-

ers still had to contend with themighty Groenlandberg andFranschhoek pass before reachingthe finish line at La CouronneWineFarm inFranschhoek onSat-urday, February 13 before earningtheir badges of honour. The pick of the two teams was

Ferreira and Schuiling gettinghome in 3:34:47 with Thompsonand Finnegan finishing in 5:07:35Ferreira and Schuiling finished
