The warning follows the recent discovery of a body in the bushes next to the road. The body was that of a 65-year-old male, said poli- ce spokesperson Warrant Officer Annacletta Mothoalo. Mothoalo accompanied TygerBurger to the scene of the crime. The body was buried in a shallow grave, which was still clearly visible. The scene was about 500 metres from the road and about 300 metres from the Faure Squatter Camp. Six suspects between the ages of 20 and 25 years who are apparently from the informal settlement, have already been arrested in connection with the murder which occurred on Wednesday 20 May. Members of the Kuils River and Delft police cluster’s Women’s Network met at the Mfulenipolice station a week ago. Several issues regarding their role in the service were discussed.PHOTO: MFULENI SAPS

Women valued inKuils River clusterThe Kuils River and Delft police clus-

ters’ Women’s Network was re-laun-ched at an event held at the Mfuleni

police station recently, with representati-ves from seven different stations attendedthe gathering.

The seven stations include Belhar, Bell-ville South, Delft, Kleinvlei, Kuils River,Mfuleni and Ravensmead.

Cluster commander Brigadier VincentBeaton addressed the policewomen at themeeting which was held on Tuesday 19May.

Beaton said the network would play a vi-tal role in forming partnerships with exter-nal role-players.

He also encouraged police members tolook after each other because “we have a du-ty of care”.

“When we take off the uniform, we are al-so human beings,” Beaton said.

Motivational speaker Pearl Erasmus, re-presenting an organisation called I Can,said women have not lost their value.

She demonstrated this by folding a R100

note into a creased state and asking the au-dience about the value of the note. The all-women audience agreed that the R100 note, although creased, still retains its value.

Erasmus praised women in leadershippositions. “If you want to be a leader, be aservant first,” she said.

She also cautioned women to be mindfulabout what say to people. “Words can hurt.Be careful what you say to other people.”

Converselty, she added: “Don’t let the opi-nion of others ruin you.”

Linda Gcwabe, Nedbank’s client educati-on manager, also addressed the audience.

In her speech Gcwabe stressed the impor-tance to women of compiling a list whengoing to do their shopping.

Another issue she addressed was thateach family must have a monthly budgetand monitor their income and expenses.

Captain Nomathemba Muavha, champi-on of Women’s Network and final speakeron the day, encouraged women in the policeto empower themselves by applying for se-nior positions.

Mfuleni police confiscated a large amountof copper and other items from an illegalscrapyard recently, thanks to the newly in-stituted Operation Fiela.

Police spokesperson Captain Nomathem-ba Muavha said several other arrests havealso been made in their area under the aus-pices of this operation.

Operation Fiela – a national police in-struction – focuses mainly on gang-riddenareas. The operation started in Cape Townabout two weeks ago.

To date, gang hotspots in Manenberg andOttery have been visited by both memberof the police and South African National De-fence Force as part of the ongoing opera-tion. Operation Fiela, meaning to reclaim, has since moved to several other areas inan attempt to rid communities of gang vio-

lence. In Happy Valley, where the operation was

also conducted by Mfuleni police members, copper was confiscated from an illegalscrapyard, the police say.

The search and confiscation occurred onTuesday 26 May.

“The police were visiting scrapyards inHappy Valley and found an illegal scrap-yard which had copper that was not ac-counted for in its record book.

“The 32-year-old owner was fined R2 500for not complying with the requirements ofbeing a second hand dealer,” Muavha said.

A scale and about 18 kilograms of copperwere confiscated.

“As the police, we appeal to the communi-ty to close the market for stolen goods bynot buying items they suspect might be sto-len,” Muavha pleaded.

Apart from the confiscation, police alsoarrested 11 suspects.

A high speed chase similar to that in aHollywood movie played itself out inthe streets of Kuils River and Eerste

River last week. The chase was witnessed by several road

users in the area who took to social mediato report on it. One Facebook user reportedthat cars had to be re-routed due to roadsbeing cordoned off as a result of the chase.Another user commented on this, applaud-ing the police for their swift reaction andsubsequent recovery of suspected stolen ve-hicles.

Racing in the streetThe high speed chase in which members

from the Kuils River and Kleinvlei policestations, along with City of Cape Town traf-fic officers took part occurred last Tuesday26 May.

The chase followed a house robbery inSomerset West earlier that day.

The suspects fled the scene in the direc-tionofKuilsRiver in twovehicles belongingto the complainant.

Maycomember for safety and security, JPSmith, said traffic officers reacted to whatthey initially thought might be an illegal

street race, but instead turned out to be anescape.

“The officers were on patrol along theR102 when they noticed two vehicles travel-ling at high speed and gave chase.

“The vehicles – a white Ford Kuga andVW Golf, were forced to stop at a red trafficlight at the intersection of Van Riebeeck

Road and Stellenbosch Arterial. One of thetraffic officers approached the VW Golf toask the driver to pull over, but he jumpedout of the vehicle – firearm in hand – andpushed the officer to the ground. She alertedher colleague who drew her firearm andfired three shots at the vehicle as both vehi-cles sped off once more,” Smith said.

Both the traffic officials and police chasedthe vehicles.

“A few minutes later, the driver of theFord Kuga collided with two other vehiclesat a four-way stop. Unfortunately, the twooccupants in the Kuga managed to flee thescene.

“The driver of the VW Golf led the policeon a chase into Eerste River before hittinga kerb and colliding with a police vehicle. He fired several shots at the officers whilefleeing the scene,” Smith explained.

The police recovered several firearms inthe two vehicles, including an R4 rifle anda hunting rifle.

Captain Isaac van Niekerk, Kuils Riverpolice spokesperson, said a television set, cash, cell phone and the stolen vehicleswere recovered.

“All round, this was an example of goodcooperation between traffic services andthe police, an example of how various agen-cies collaborate daily,” said Smith.

‘Crooks’ crash in high speed chase

This is the vehicle the suspects driving theFord Kuga crashed into. It was badly damagedas a result of the accident. The suspects fledthe scene.

SeveralWesbank families are still reco-vering from a disastrous fire that gut-ted two homes and five informal struc-

tures. The incident occurred in Rowellan Street

on Sunday 17 May. One adult male sufferedburn wounds to his face.Several fires have occurred in the Wes-

bank and Kalkfontein area since the startof the year. In most cases informal structu-res are burnt down, partially damaging ad-jacent houses.Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of

Cape Town’s fire and rescue services, saidan average 106 emergency calls from infor-mal areas were received during the wintermonths of June, July and August last year. The number of recorded informal dwel-

lings affected by fires inwinter last yearwe-re 210 inJune, 169 inJuly and 175 inAugust. The number of formal dwellings affected

by fires for each of the months were 41, 87and 57 respectively.Layne said the coldweather inwinter for-

ced people to keep warm with heaters andbrazier fires. If notmonitored properly, the-se can result in residential fires.“Our services, for the previous winter pe-

riod 1 May to 31 August 2014, responded to406 informal residential fires, resulting inthe deaths of 36 people. He said the City is making all attempts to

ensure that the number of structures andthe number of fatalities decrease during theforthcoming winter period.“Our service is proactively focussing

their Fire Safety Education efforts on thearea’s most prone to structural fires.“Fire and rescue is also teaming up with

other services to ensure that the maximumnumber of residents are educated on as-pects of fire safety and the immediate repor-ting of incidents. He added that most fires are caused by

lack of thought or concentration, or by care-lessness.“Cigarettes, matches and lighters, cand-

les, electrical faults, heating and cookingappliances and equipment such as electricblankets can all be lethal.”In order to prevent shack fires, residents

should:Keep a close eye on paraffin stoves;Avoid cooking near a curtained window;Make sure the stove is stable and does not

fall over;Make sure candles are secure and cannot

fall over;Do not go to sleep with candles still bur-

ning;Teach children about the dangers of fire;Watch out for discarded cigarette butts;Be aware of the dangers of illegal and faul-

ty electricity connections, which also causefires;Keep a bucket filled with water to extin-

guish flames;Keep a bucket of sand to put out paraffin

fires;Build dwellings at least three metres

apart to prevent fires from spreading, andensure this space is kept open;Keep roads and access to dwellings clear

at all times;Donot block roadswithpossessionswhen

there is a fire;Do not prevent or disrupt the work of fire

crews fighting fires.V For safety tips on fires visit the City’s website orhttp://www.capetown.gov.za/en/FireAndRescue/Pages/default.aspx

A day of cooking, baking and laughterwas shared by Wesbank mothers andtheir children during a Market Day

held last week. Its success was such that it is a day

planned to be celebrated regularly by moth-ers belonging to a parents support group. The programme is run by the Centre for

Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP).Asia Frieslaar, programme coordinator,

said the purpose behind the market day isfor mothers who form part of the parentssupport group to raise funds. They do thisby hosting group activities such as this.“All of them contributed something that

they had at home.“They manage to come up with lots of

items to bake and sell to the community. They sold hot food such as soup and currybunnies, and sweet treats such as ice-cream,donuts and muffins,” Anthea said. She said there were lots of goodies to

choose from but things sold out very fast.“It was the group’s very first market day.

The funds they raised will make it possiblefor them to host workshops and take part ineducation excursions that would be benefi-cial for the entire group.“The ladies want to go out on excursions

outside their community as they are facedwith day to day violence and often trauma-tized by gang violence and shooting.“They do not have the financial means to

do something for themselves as the moneythey receive always has to fill a hole suchas providing for their families, resulting inthemnotbeingable to go todifferent places,”Anthea added. The parent group gathers on a weekly ba-

sis to support, encourage and strengtheneach other. Group sessions focus on life-skills and parental skills. They meet at the Wesbank Multi-purpose

Centre in Silversands Road.“We would like to appeal to companies or

organisations to assist or donate anything

towards the group’s next market day whichwill be taking place this Friday,” said An-thea.

The Kuils River police have issued awarning to residents following sever-al reports of potential robbers visi-ting homes pretending to be councilworkers.

The suspects apparently knock onthe door and claim they are there tofix an electrical problem.

In all of the reports received so far, however, none of the home ownershave reported any electical problemsor contacted the City of Cape Town, said police spokesperson CaptainIsaac van Niekerk.

He said it appears the men want togain access to homes in order to robthe occupants.

Van Niekerk told TygerBurger re-ports have been received from resi-dents in the area and neighbouringareas. To date a resident in Sarepta,Kuils River, Bellville and one inTenth Avenue, Ravensmead have re-ported the matter to the police.

“They normally say they are thereto work on the electricity cables.

“The men are dressed in councilclothes with the CoCT marking onthem.

“When people do not allow themac-cess they just move on,” van Niekerksaid.

He said the two men drive a whitepanel van. “We suspect the clothesthey are wearing are stolen.

“We have not received any reportsof themen actually robbing the homeowners but we want to warn peopleto be extra careful when openingtheir doors,” van Niekerk said.

Irista Primary School in Sarepta, KuilsRiver – a no-fee school – recently recei-ved a much needed cash injection and

other donations thanks to the generosity oftwo locals.Learner support educator Karin van

Schalkwyk said Telkom donated R100 000to the school, made possible by a former re-sident now Chief Financial Officer (CFO)at the company, Deon Fredericks.Van Schalkwyk said Fredericks chose

the school as abeneficiaryofTelkom’s soci-al responsibility department because hewanted to give back to his community.

TechnologySchool principal Francois van Wyk,

along with head of department FaghrieBorraine, thanked Fredericks for inves-ting in the school.Van Schalkwyk added that the school

principal was working to improve lear-ners’ literacy levels by encouraging theuse

of technology as a teaching tool from Gra-des R to 7.“That is why the Telkom donation has

been allocated to buying technological re-sources. We are also upgrading our securi-ty to protect the resources,” she said.

According to the principal, the schoolneedsmore investors to create an inclusiveschool environment.“We need more donations to develop our

learners holistically and prepare them forfuture challenges.

“We need more books for our library, re-tired teachers to volunteer and help lear-ners improve their reading, writing andmaths classes after school or on Saturdays.“We also need dance, karate and other

sport instructors to volunteer their ta-lents,” van Wyk said.

IntroductionApart from the Telkom donation, Steve

Nell, a resident from Sarepta and owner ofMDSOL Group Holdings, also sponsoredelectronic equipment to the value ofR25 000.“We received a digital camera, laptop

Irista Primary, introduced the two to theschool’s management andmade them awa-re of the institution’s plight.“The donors are both from Kuils River

and chose Irista because she (Fredericks)inspired them to do so. This is part of theirsocial responsibility and they wanted tohelp uplift the less fortunate school in theirhometown,” van Schalkwyk said.

SAREL BURGER

Durbell se knap hanteerwerk en goed be-

RACING: UNIQUE RACE DAY BILLED AT KILLARNEY HAS PETROL HEADS FROTHING

Carnival of speed

Actionpacked racing is due to thrill spectators at Killarney during the Carnival Race Day onSaturday.

With Saturday’s unique Carnival Ra-ce Day offering more top flight va-riety than has ever been experien-

ced at Killarney, there is tremendous exci-tement among petrol-heads of all ages.

The on-track action includes the Caperound of the All-Africa 3-Hour EnduranceRace Series due to finish after dark, a legof the South African Superkart Champi-onship and round four of the Power Seriesfor cars and motorcycles, sponsored byWingfield Motors.

A parade of VW Beetles in honour of themarque’s 80th anniversary (the prototypewas unveiled in Germany in mid 1935), willtake place during the lunch break, with thelucky winners of high speed laps in a ra-cing sports Porsche competition to receivetheir award shortly afterwards. There willalso be a display of motorcycle stunt riding.

Static attractions will be an Exotic andSports Car Show that includes several his-toric motorcycles under cover in the spaci-ous new pit block. The popular Engen F1simulators will be available to budding Le-wis Hamiltons in the same building. Outs-ide, a multifaceted fun fair and amusementpark will run in the adjacent parking area.

American muscleWhile entries for the 3-Hour Race include

six Porsches, all with two or even threedrivers, the battle up front is likely to befought between a trio of Junos, a Dodge Vi-per and possibly a Panoz Esperante.

The formidable Juno attack is being ledby Western Cape champion Francis Carru-thers, with co-drivers Nick Adcock and De-an McCarroll in an SS3 V6. They will haveto face Craig Jarvis and Marcel Angel inJarvis’s recently acquired brutal V10, 8.4

litre Dodge Viper, and an American-sourcedV8 Panoz Esperante shared by Dave Alhad-eff, Jonathan Bernstein and Chris Carolin.

Any gap up front will allow the remainingJuno SS3s of Steve Humble / Johan Engel-brecht and Colin Plit / Dawie Joubert, ormaybe even Justin Mathie and Gary Sher-rat’s Nissan 370Z to take up the chase.

Interesting entries have been receivedfrom Mark Lauth / Mike Verrier in a ShelbyCanAm, while Greg Mills is teamed withAndrea Bate in a Pillbeam MP 98.

LowslungThen there’s the potentially awesome

spectacle of the Superkart races where thedrivers’ backside is a few inches off theground, in these tiny projectiles with no sus-pension and wheels the size of chocolate coa-ted doughnuts. However, they are poweredby 250cc motors with six speed sequentialgearboxes and can hit over 200 km/h on theback straight and lap quicker than the migh-ty Wesbank V8’s of a couple of years ago.

The perennially hard-fought Bold MarineGTi Challenge racing is expected to be ahighlight. Young Marco Busi and Christop-her Swart will be the ones to watch.

While 15-year-old Joshua Dolinschekseeks to repeat his recent single seater For-mula Libre victory, the battle in the MutluBatteries Classic Cars and the Cars Unlimi-ted Fine Car events, which includes DaveRowley’s rare, modified VW Beetle, is expec-ted to be much closer.

With the first race to start at 10:00, the Af-rican 3-Hour is the final event and is to getunder way at 4.15pm. Admission is R60 foradults and R20 for scholars under 16. Thereis no charge for kids under 12. Tickets arealso available from Computicket.
