BREWERY: MOTIVATING MEN TO RESPONSIBILITIES
Capped to combat dopGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
With the festive season in full swing,an interesting initiative inDelftwillsee 50 men in the forefront of foster-
ing safe and responsible celebrations duringthe festivities. On Friday these 50 from Delft graduated
from the South African Breweries TavernIntervention Programme (TIP), which aimsto drive attitudinal and behavioural changein men identified as perpetrators of socialills, including crime.TIP is a partnership between SAB and a
local NGO, Men for Development in South
Africa (MEDSA). It aims to empower menwith appropriate skills and knowledge to ef-fectively combat crimes closely linked to al-cohol abuse. It is one of the few programmesof its kind in existence in South Africa.
GraduationWestern Cape MEC for Social Develop-
ment, Albert Fritz, gave the keynote addressat the graduation. In his address to the graduandi he pointed
out he felt honoured to stand before them.“With this step you have taken you have
shown the world that you are a very impor-tant person by taking this decision to be partof this project,” he said.
“You have taken a decision that will im-pact not only your destiny by being respon-sible, but the destiny and lives of thosearound you, who will be motivated by yourbehaviour. I can see the pride in your eyeswith the skills you have been taught. Younow have a new respect for yourself tomakea difference in your surroundings.“That respectnowextends to those around
you: four family, your wife, your children, your neighbours; that respect will spreadthrough your community through your ex-ample,” he said.
Agents of changeSAB partners with a number of communi-
ty based organisations and leaders to ensurethe success of the TIP and to help identifythose men who require intervention as wellas thosewhowish to be affirmed andbecomeagents of change within their communi-ties.These include community based organi-sations focused on upliftment, communitydevelopment workers, community policingforums, community patrol units, tavernowners, provincial liquor authorities, liq-uor traders associations, the police and in-fluential community leaders.Police databases assist in identifying per-
petrators and social workers may also makereferrals to the programme.

Eachworkshop is held in a local tavern overa period of five days, and encourages activeengagement by participants on several so-cial issues. The content of each workshop is based on
issues and trends prevalent in South Africaand across the globe. It seeks to promote responsible alcohol
consumption; support SAB’s Alcohol Strate-gy; reduce the impact of HIV and Aids; pro-mote human rights, and in particular chil-dren’s rights; minimise gender based vio-lence and contribute to a reduction in crime.Amongst others, the men are educated on
the importance of eating and drinkingwaterwhen consuming alcohol, HIV/Aids trans-mission and how to accommodate people in-fected and affected by the disease, the impor-tance of circumcision in the promotion ofmen’s health, understanding and promotingthe rights of women and children, conflict
resolution, family values and healthy liv-ing.“SAB understands the responsibility
that comes from being a leading corporatecitizen, and is constantly striving to be aforce for good within society. It is for thisreasonwehave long taken a leadership rolein promoting the health and well-being ofthe communities in which we operate,”says Mpho Sadiki, SAB Head: Sustainabili-ty and Transformation.“Through the TIP, SAB wants to be part
of the solution by not only addressing thesymptoms of the problem, but by targetingits source. Empowering thesemenwith thenecessary information to become ambassa-dors of change will mean a better life fortheir families and entire communities.”The TIP was first introduced in 2008 as
a pilot programme and officially launchedin 2010, ending in 2012. During this four-year period the programme reached morethan 2000 men in local communities.SAB is targeting at least 360 new intakes
aged 18 and above in various parts of thecountry between mid-September and early2015. At the final day of the programme, participants are rewarded during a gradua-tion ceremony with a certificate of partici-pation. They are encouraged to sign apledge of commitment to be ambassadors ofchange and champions within their com-munity.Amen’s support groupwhichmeets once
a month, is formed by the men. Here theyconsolidate what they have learnt duringthe intervention sessions, are able to dis-cuss and share problems, or be referred toan expert organisation such as SANCA,FAMSA or social workers for further inter-vention. Behavioural changes in the menare tracked through the support groups.
The participants in the project celebrate their graduation with Western Cape MEC for SocialDevelopment, Albert Fritz, front centre (red tie), and dignatries from SAB, the City of CapeTown and police. PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK

Therewas a celebratorymood at the launchofUWC’snewDesmondTutuCentre for Spi-rituality and Society on Tuesday 2 Decem-ber, and for good reason, as the Centre isseen as the culmination of a consensus-ba-sed process to supplement the University’sDesmond Tutu Chair for Ecumenical Theo-logy and Social Transformation.Working hand in hand, the Chair and the
Centre would, in the words of Chair incum-bent, Professor Christo Lombard, “engagewith the Tutu legacy in civil society”.The Centre’s beginnings can be traced
back to 2006, when the University kick-star-ted its plans to establish the Desmond TutuChair. That chair, it was envisioned, wouldhonour the legacy of Archbishop EmeritusDesmond Tutu - who had served as UWCChancellor for almost 25 years - through tea-ching and research aspects of the Tutu lega-cy in theology and social transformation. The Chair took a while to get going, but
was finally established as a rotating chairin 2012. A year later, Lombard, on his retire-ment from the university’s Department ofReligion and Theology, was appointed asthe incumbent of the Chair after he had sha-red duties with two other scholars duringthe preceding year.Much was expected of Lombard. Not only
was he set the task of turning the Chair intoa fully endowed one, but he was also to di-rect efforts to establish what would becomethe Desmond Tutu Centre for Spiritualityand Society.Lastweek, Lombard could tickbothboxes
on his to-do list. (Fund-raising efforts willcontinue, however.)The Centre’s aims, as explained at the
launch, are ambitious. Firstly, it aspires to“honour, treasure and sustain the visionand legacy” of the former Chancellorthrough engagement between UWC and re-ligious groups and organisations, and civilsociety. Secondly, the Centre would pull to-gether projects and themes initiated in theDepartment of Religion and Theology, such
as ecumenical studies and social ethics, un-der the Centre’s broad goal to investigate –in both theoretical and practical terms – therole of religion and spirituality in civil so-ciety in South Africa. At the launch, speaker after speaker spo-
ke of how the Centre will take its moral cuefrom the life and person of Desmond Tutu.“Hewas always tomeaprofound example
of humanity, humility, humour and grace,”said Professor Duncan Brown, Dean of theFaculty of Arts.“We have become what we now are as a
consequence of the fact that ‘the Arch’ iswith us,” added Rector and Vice-Chancel-lor, Professor Brian O’Connell. And in his public lecture on Desmond Tu-
tu’s Style of Ethical Leadership, it was Lom-bard who explored the contributions of oneof South Africa’s most beloved public figu-res.“He has a canny ability to bring synergy
where others see only opposition or diffe-rence,” said Lombard. “His leadership wastransformative. It was definitely a form ofservant leadership. It was inclusive and af-firming of his co-workers, but it also had avery disciplined side to it, including prayerand meditation and real dedication to thetask.”In spelling out the Centre’s many tasks,
objectives and programmes, ProfessorErnst Conradie, Chairperson of the Depart-ment of Religion and Theology, highlightedthe part that community engagement – amainstay of UWC’s reputation – will play inthe life of the Centre. This engagement willby and large revolve around collaborationswith faith-based organisations (FBOs) and, through them, community organisations.“These faith-basedorganisationsare thedy-namos of social change,” Conradie explai-ned.For more information about the centre
contact Aidan van den Heever on 021 9599566 or at [email protected].

Chess players at Webner Primary School inRavensmead are making smart moves onthe championship chess scene.Since the school became aMOD (Mass Op-
portunity Development) centre focusing onthe sport last year, the learners have takento it with lots of success. The big news adding to their end of year
celebrations was that three of their playersmade it into the Western Province under-8side taking part in the championships inKimberley in January.Principal John Aspeling says he was a bit
scepticalwhen the programme started at theschool but now he is the biggest fan.“I confess I had my doubts when the pro-
gramme started,” he smiles.“Then I saw how the learners attitudes
changed as they were empowered throughplaying, learning to think ahead, to be disci-plined and competing with top schools
across the peninsula and coming out tops.“Teachers could not stop talking about the
change in those learners and how it wasspreading to all learners. I happily ate myhumble pie and fully support the pro-gramme.”Aspeling said some other major sporting
stars had their humble beginnings at theschool and one of themwas now giving backto the community by sponsoring the team’stour to the championship.“Cricketer Vernon Philander attended
school here and he is very proud of theseyoungsters achievements. His foundationhas given us the funds to take them to thesechampionships,” he said.Aspeling was also very proud of the girl’s
team at the school who also competedagainst some top schools and came secondin the competition.“I think that they have done verywell con-
sidering that some of these schools hadteams that have been playing formanymoreyears.”

The six mutilated bodies found dumped inKraaifontein last week is a grim reminderof what happens when a community takesthe law into their own hands.“I am fed up with crime and I believe that
everybody in Kraaifontein feels the same, but vigilante justice is not the answer,” saidGavin Riddles, chairman of the CommunityLaw and Order foundation in Kraaifontein.TygerBurger spoke to him after the dust
had settled on the gruesome mass murderof the men, at this stage believed to havebeen the handiwork of a bundu court. The discovery of the bodies sent shock-
waves throughout the city and caused ame-dia frenzy.Themenwere found lined-up next to each
other, face down and hands and feet tied, in-dicative of an execution style murder.Bloodied rocks and rags of clothing were
found strewn around the bodies. Police be-lieve the men were stoned to death andstabbed with a sharp object. All six of the men aged between 18 and 30
hails from Wallacedene.Riddles says he had received information
alleging the men had been involved in thedisappearance of R70 000 from a stokvel.

The season of merriment is upon us againand festive fun is the order of the day. But,with all the merry making we tend to forgetthat costs money and we’re encouraged tospend as if there’s no tomorrow.
Pastor Charles George of Home of Com-passion Ministries bid us watch our pocketsand remember the true meaning of Christ-mas:
One of the most popular descriptions ofthis time of the year is, “The Silly Season”.
December has gained this reputation be-cause of the frantic pace at which peopleseem to live their lives in the last thirty onedays of the year, with endless staff parties, trips to the malls and queues to get into any-thing from a parking garage to a check-outcounter at the local supermarket.
Tempers seem to be strained and familydisputes appear to be more public as par-ents try control crying children who are ex-hausted from hours inside the shops or aredemanding items beyond the family budget.
It’s ironic that the Season of Goodwill hascome to be anything but that, as last minuteshoppers vie for limited stocks on specials, precious parking spaces become full scalewar zones, tired long distance travellersshow scant regard for the safety of their pas-sengers or other road users, when they dis-
regard rules of the road.Worse still, decisions to spend money we
don’t have right now and deal with the pay-back due date in January, carry withinthem the seeds of the silly season being ex-tended long past December.
While the essential message of Christmasis to bring good news of great joy to the na-tion and “giving” is the key word of this sea-son, the intention behind this Biblical wordis a far cry from what we experience. Cleverretail marketing strategists convince usspend our hard earned salary or bonus in-side their shops.
We convince ourselves we’re being trueto the Christmas spirit if we do just that.Sadly, we do not see just how little thoughtto being good stewards of our resources andbalancing spend with savings, or being re-spectful of other motorists or shoppers ortravellers, in the way we treat them in theparking lots or shopping aisles or on themain roads.
As we celebrate Christ’s birth, let’s re-flect of the true sense of giving with consid-ered balance between spending and savingfor the new year, respect towards each otherand a moment of reflection and gratitude toGod for reminding us of how we should liveour lives before each other.
Stay sane this Christmas

The Delft Big Band are in the mood for aswinging festive season with some excitingnews just in that they have been confirmedfor the Cape Town International Jazz Festi-val next year - and they’re finally busy withthat recording that everyone wants. While the group has been on the bill of the
festival before, this time around they willbe featuring on theMain Stage on 28Marchnext year.It has been a busy year,
with the group now doingregular performancesaround town and one of theirfavourite haunts has beenThe Crypt in the city centre. The band played at the ven-
ue for two consecutive nightsin November, once again topacked audiences, and the al-most inevitable standing ova-tions.Their performances here
have impressed visitors fromoverseas, with a couple fromHolland donating R20 000 to help fund thelaunching of the feeder band to teachmusicto learners from schools in the Delft area. There was also the couple who had been
toRonnieScott’s inLondonwhopointedoutthat the group could take to any interna-tional stage with ease. While their performances pack out the
venue, the performance fees are still supple-mented from the band’s coffers becausethey believe in paying the musicians a sti-pend for performing, and the fee for the gigdoes not cover all these costs. So if there is a sponsor out therewhowant
to support the gigs at this venue, get intouch with them. The other exciting news is that the band
was in the studio recently where they wererecording material for their debut release.
Everybody wants more of their music attheir performances so this recording is real-ly by public demand and they are tryingtheir best to have copies ready at some oftheir performances coming up during thefestive season - and there’s lots of them - justcheck out their website. They will be on the programme at Oude
Libertas, Helderberg Nature Reserve, Ha-rold Porter Botanical Reserve, StarlightClassics at Vergelegen, and of course theCape Town Jazz Festival next year.
In addition, they havebeen offered a sponsor-ship to travel to Graham-stown in July next year,to perform and take partin workshops at theStandard Bank NationalYouth Jazz Festival. While all this news is
exciting, founder IanSmith does not want tolose sight of why theproject was started in thefirst place.“All these musicians
started while learners atschools in the area and it took hard workand dedication to get them to this level, butwe must get back to our initial aims of anongoing supply of musicians comingthrough the ranks,” he said.“We now need to raise funds to start a
feeder band to keep up the good work theDelft Big Band is doing andR100 000 is need-ed to enable us to purchase the instrumentsrequired.“Thanks to the Dutch donors, we now
have R80 000 to go, so we’re saying to busi-nesses, corporates even individuals whowant to change a young life through music, visit our website and be part of that differ-ence.”V For more information about the project visitwww.delftbigband.co.za, some exciting video clipsof their performances are also there.

Don’t give‘ChristmasBox’ tocity staffThe City of Cape Town has made it clearthat solicitation of Christmas donations bymunicipal staff is forbidden. Any contribu-tions are purely voluntary.
“The City of Cape Town would like to ad-vise residents that the solid waste manage-ment department enforces a policy whichstrictly forbids its personnel from askingresidents for ‘Christmas boxes’ and solici-ting any donations. Staff have been remin-ded that this practice is prohibited.
“If, however, residents believe that excel-lent service has been provided, they are ofcourse at liberty to give a voluntary donati-on to staff as a gesture of thanks and good-will, but under no circumstances shouldthey be approached and asked for money.
“City staff are appropriately remunera-ted. It would be appreciated if residentscould report any incidents of intimidationby City staff to the call centre on 0860 103089 during office hours. Apart from the da-te, time, and place, a vehicle registrationnumber should be provided so that the cul-prits can be identified. Such reports will beinvestigated immediately and, where resi-dents are willing to testify, the City will beable to take disciplinary action against theoffenders,” says the City’s mayco memberfor utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg.
Refuse collection services will remainunchanged during the festive period, evenon public holidays.
“Due to there being less traffic on the ro-ads during the holiday period, collection te-ams might arrive at their premises earlierthan usual. It is therefore best that resi-dents place their bins out before 06:00 du-ring this time,”says Sonnenberg.
Residents are also advised that all drop-off facilities will be closed on ChristmasDay and New Year’s Day.V For any other solid waste-related service queries, residents can contact the City’s call centre on 0860103 089.
Over 90% of nine-year-old girls in the Wes-tern Cape are now protected against HPVrelated cervical cancer.
This is the result of an HPV vaccinationcampaign, organised by provincial healthin collaboration with primary schools.
Western Cape health minister TheunsBotha stated, “The uptake by all role play-ers of the immunisation has been wonder-ful. HPV related cervical cancer is respon-sible for the death of many young women. We hope that through this vaccination, when these young girls are wives and mo-thers, we will see a significant decline inthe incidence of HPV related cervical can-cer.
“This not only speaks into our goal of im-proving the wellness of our society, but alsoto the financial implications for house-holds who need to care for a family memberwho is ill. Well done to all those involvedin achieving this remarkable coverage.”
The HPV campaign took place in tworounds, the first round saw coverage of 87%whereas the second round in October foundthat not only had a number of girls becomeeligible for the vaccination, but many moreparents signed consent forms thus enablingtheir daughters to be vaccinated. Thissmall group (approximately 13% of the totalgroup), will receive their booster shot du-ring the 2015 campaign which will take pla-ce in February and March and again in Sep-tember and October.
Immunisation is available free of chargeat all health facilities and at a number ofpartner organisations. The Human Papillo-mavirus (HPV) immunisation is currentlyonly offered to girls attending publicschools and are nine years old during Gra-de 4. Parents wishing to have their olderdaughters vaccinated can consult their lo-cal pharmacy.

The Danny Abrahams Ex FootballersFund is the birth of a project aiming toassist old players who are in dire need
of financial assistance.Ivan Jack (Elsies River) and Douglas Ka-
relse (Kraaifontein) are themasterminds be-hind the fund and are trying to relieve somepressure off their former teammates.Jack played for Elsies River from 1970 to
1992 and Douglas played professional soccerfor Cape Town Spurs from 1970 to 1988.“We applied to register the fund as a NPC
(non-profit company) some four months agoandwegot thegreenlight lastweek.Thiswillreally help us in our cause to approach com-panies and individuals to sponsor us in anyway they see fit,” said Jack.Former Cape Town Spurs star Danny
Abrahams was the initial spur for the fund.Abrahams, who struggles financially andhas Alzheimers, has benefited greatly fromhis friends.“It’s difficult to see howyour former team-
mate struggles. Dougie and I said we can’tjust sit back and watch him and other play-ers struggle theway they do.We felt the urgeto jump in and help,” Jack says.“It’s a great feeling, helping them in wha-
tever way we can. Every now and then wewill host a dance and raise a bit of moneyfor these chaps. We are hoping to get somesponsors in thenewyear to assist us in bette-ring their lives.“Having said that, we are very positive we
can get some sponsors on board, there is so-me interest from companies and individualswanting to get involved but we had to waitto get registered as aNPC. Now that we havethe papers, it is all systems go. We will also
approach Safa and see if they can help us inany way possible,” he said. The fund committee will also have a
monthly meeting and see who they can as-sist in that given month.“Sometimeswewill just go and have a cup
of tea and chat about the good old days. Itis truly heart warming to help these guysand see how thankful they are. This is whywe dowhatwe do. To be there for our friendsand help make life just a little bit better onegood deed at a time,” said Karelse.Phone Ivor Jack on 083 241 5847 of Douglas

tjie-sege Montrose (112) druipstert huistoe gestuurnáveral stewige bydraes deurGiovanni Hulley (4/20), Dillon Verreyne
(44) enChristiaanMocke (34*).

Sports facilities across the Cape are fall-ing prey to the acts of brazen vandalsand thieves.
A total of 55 sports complexeswere vandal-ised and burgled between April and Novem-ber. A staggering 217 incidents were report-ed during this period, the city confirms.
Sports clubs and facility managementcommittees are calling on the city to step upsecurity, as they fear the continuous crimi-nal activities may stifle or end operations atthe organisations and facilities.
Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the RygateLocal Football Association (LFA) whichcalls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Ry-lands its home, says vandals stripped the fa-cility in the first week of October – only acouple of weeks after the end of the footballseason. He claims the damage amounts toR200 000, a cost they cannot cover.
“The interior of the clubhouse wasstripped bare. All the cabling and wiringwas removed. The wiring of the floodlightswas also removed and the electricity box re-moved and damaged,” Bailey says.
Similarly, chairperson of the Metropoli-tan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropoli-tan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hit
at the end of October. The facility wasstripped to resemble a shell and the organi-sation had to replace the trophies and med-als for its annual prizegivingdays before the event.
“Everything was fine dur-ing the season, except for theodd burglary, but when theseason ended and there wasless activity at the facility, the criminals pounced.
“The MFMC is constantlyreminded that it is not theowner of the facility, but on-ly the custodians. Yet theowner, the city, doesn’t takeresponsibility for its assets.”
In local sporting circles,Weitz adds, there has beentalk of several facilities being vandalisedover the last couple of months. “There wasa time when security guards were placed atthe facility, but they informed us their con-tract had come to an end and that was theend of security,” he explains.
“The city spends millions upgrading andmaintaining facilities, so I believe theyshouldprotect it or theworkwill beuseless.”TygerBurger has reported on incidents at
the Wesbank Sports Complex, DurbanvilleSports Complex and Ruyterwacht Sports
Complex, while its sister publicationCityVi-sion reported on incidents at the Gugulethuand Philippi swimming pools.
Furthermore, it’s othersister publication, People’sPost has reported on burgla-ry and vandalism at severalsports facilities across thepeninsula over the last cou-ple of months. These includethe Stephan Reagan, Rock-lands and Strandfonteinsports complexes, andSwartklip Indoor SportsCentre in Mitchell’s Plain, the Hoosain Parker SportsComplex in Parkwood andthe Johnson Road SportsComplex. Burglary and van-
dalism were also reported at clubhouses atKraaifontein Sports Complex.
Despite the number of incidents, the citysays it cannot provide continuous securitypresence.
Mayco member for community servicesand special projects, Belinda Walker, says a“limited budget” of R36m was allocated forsecurity in the department budget.
“The department has had to rationalisethe use of security personnel at some of itsfacilities to remain within the allocated
budget in the current financial year,” shesays.
“The departmentmanages a large numberof public facilities across the city and hasidentified hotspots where facilities are par-ticularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism– security personnel will be present at thesefacilities. It is closelymonitoring these facil-ities to find the most effective and financial-ly sustainable options for securing them.”
But security guards aren’t the only option,Walker adds, as the city has invested consid-erably in fences and alarms. It is also work-ing to create partnerships with communityorganisations such as neighbourhoodwatches to help deter theft and vandalism.
The city has spent R4,8m on repairs andreplacements at facilities which have fallenvictim to theft and vandalism, Walker says.
“This is money that could have been putto better use to either upgrade these facili-ties or provide additional facilities in areaswhere there are limited or no sport and rec-reation facilities,” she says.
“Now, more than ever, we need our com-munities to work with us and take owner-ship of their recreational spaces. We urgeresidents to report any suspicious behav-iour immediately.”V Report incidents anonymously on the toll-freenumber 0800 225 669.
