The final phase of themidblockwater pipereplacement project, which covers 100 pro-perties in Ruyterwacht, will result in a com-pletely new water network for this area.

Ensuring reliable energy supplyThe operational budget for the current fi-

The first phase of amulti-year, R90millionelectricity substation capacity upgrade andrefurbishment, together with new oil-filledcabling, is expected to commence in EppingIndustria 2 soon. “This capital injection willensure that the electricity supply to the in-dustrial area and the surrounding

“Street lights will be provided in ElsburyWay, Matroosfontein. This was an initiativeof the Matroosfontein Community Policing-Forum as they were concerned about thevulnerable elderly citizens living in ElsburyWay.”

Ruyterwacht will be concluded by middleDecember. Ten homes in Bishop Lavis(Ward 30) will have ceilings installed at a va-lue of R30 000 per house. “Paulus Street inValhalla Park is riddled with potholes andwill be resurfaced. The pavements will alsobe tarred,” Justus said.

To mark Heritage Day, Women in Lea-dership (WiL), a non-governmental or-ganisation in Elsies River, hosted a

women’s empowerment conference to com-memorate the heroines of the past.Women from Eerste River, Belhar, Bell-

ville, Delft, Mfuleni and even from as far asAtlantis converged at the St Faith’s Churchin Elsies River for the conference under thetheme: “20 years of democracy andwomen’sempowerment.”A host of guest speakers ad-dressed the gathering about law and socialjustice, gender equality, food security andsafety at schools among other topics.There was also a strong focus on empowe-

ring women so they in turn can empowertheir communities. One of the guest spea-kers,WesternCapeRegionalHead of theDe-partment of Justice and Constitutional De-velopment, Advocate Hishaam Mohamed,spokeaboutwomen, the lawandsocial justi-ce.Mohamed said it is important forwomento reflect on where they come from in orderto move forward.

Continuing to fight for what’s right“We are a country with a great story to

tell, a story of struggle and victory and acommitment towork together to foster nati-on-building and social cohesion,” said Mo-hamed.He brought to attention the struggles wo-

men faced in 1954, when hundreds marchedin Pretoria in protest against pass laws.“Those women were not only fighting forpolitical emancipation but economic empo-werment, equal representation, access tojustice and land rights as articulated in the

Women’s Charter of 1954 and reiterated inthe 1994 Women’s Charter for EffectiveEquality. The right to employment withequal pay and possibilities of promotion inall spheres of work, equal rights in relationto property, land rights, andthe removal of all laws andcustoms that denied womensuch equality. [The Charter]further demanded paid ma-ternity leave for women,childcare for working mo-thers and free and compulso-ry education for all South Af-rican children.”Mohamed said just last

month the Justice Crime Pre-vention and Security (JCPS)cluster engaged with thou-sands of women from acrossthe Western Cape duringtheir Women’s Month pro-gramme. “Womenmade theirvoices heard on the challen-ges that women still face to-day. “Through our variousinteractions with NGOs atworkshops and communityimbizos the message received through theinteraction with the community was clear:defaulters of child maintenance must bebrought to book.

Still have a long way to go“We were also informed that the reasons

for the high withdrawal rate of domestic vi-olence protection order applications werebecause many women, particularly single

mothers, feared further abuse at the handsof the abuser on whom they are financiallydependent.”However, Mohamed said two decades af-

ter South Africa’s first democratic election,there has been a marked incre-ase in the representation of wo-men in Parliament and govern-ment and the private sector be-cause of the unprecedentedbody of laws and policies thathave been introduced. “As wespeak todaywomen judges con-stitute about 30% of all judges,nationally. “Women also makeupabout 41%of the totalmagis-tracy and are also representedin the Judicial Service Com-mission and the Magistrates’Commission.But he added that when it co-

mes to women inmanagement,we still have a long way to goboth in the public and privatesectors.Doctor Wallace Mgoqi, Com-

missioner at the Commissionfor Gender Equality, says the

rights of women need to be respected andthat gender equality needs to be maintai-ned. “We need to strive towards a societythat is free from all forms of oppression.”Women in Leadership project coordinator,Matilda Vantura said she was grateful forthe government and the private sector’sparticipation in the event and looked for-ward to a successful working relationshipwith all the stakeholders in the future.

More than 30 swimming pools across the ci-ty will be open as of today (1 October) forthe summer season. These popular publicamenities are frequently visited by both yo-ung and old from across all communities.While Cape Town’s beaches draw thou-

sands of people during the summer season,the city’s swimming pools also enjoy a gene-rous share of visitors. Over the last sum-mer, fromOctober 2013 toMarch 2014, morethan 1.1 million people visited municipalpools across the city. More than 32 000 peo-ple visited swimming pools on the Day ofGoodwill (26 December 2013) alone. Over150 lifeguards will be on duty at the variouspools, with additional lifeguards appointedduring December and January when usage

is at its highest. BelindaWalker, theMaycomember for community services andspecial projects says: “We would like to ap-peal to all pool users to obey the instructi-ons and guidance of lifeguards and Citystaff. A lifeguard’s most important role isthe prevention of drowning incidents, butthey also serve to teach pool users aboutwa-ter safety. Our municipal pools should beplaces of fun and recreation – without anyfear of irresponsible behaviour that can pla-ce other bathers at risk.”The pools in thenorthern suburbs that open today are: Bell-ville South, Ruyterwaght, Ravensmead,Morning Star, Goodwood, Delft, Bonteheu-wel, Parow Valley, Parow North, Elsies Ri-ver, Bellville and Blue Downs.

Change your life at this revival

The annual religious celebration of Eid-ul-adha (Eid of Sacrifice) is only a fewdays away and this year, Qurbani takesplace between 3 and 6 October.

The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCAwould like call on those planning toslaughter sheep or cattle to follow theseguidelines to ensure that the animals donot suffer unnecessarily.

According to the Animals ProtectionAct (No.71 of 1962):

V All animals must be confined in sucha manner that allows them adequate spa-ce, ventilation, shelter, food and water;

V No animal should be picked up by itsfleece, dragged, chased or prodded;

V Animals should be restrained huma-nely while being transported and whenbeing slaughtered;

V No animal should be tied by its legswith bailing twine and crammed into theback of car boots or laid on their sidesat the back of bakkies;

V When due to be slaughtered, animalsshould be laid on their sides and not ontheir backs to avoid distress. Animalsshould also not be forced to stand orkneel during slaughter;

V Knives used for the slaughter mustalso remain extremely sharp so that theslaughtering remains as humane as pos-sible;

V Only experienced people should per-form the slaughtering. Inexperienced,lay persons who attempt to perform theslaughters often cause horrific traumaand pain to the animal.

The CoGH SPCA advises those whoare inexperienced, but want to partake

in Qurbani, to contact the CoGH SPCAInspectorate on 021 700 4158/59 or afterhours on 083 326 1604 for referral to suchestablishments.

Members of the public who wish toperform Qurbani at their residentialpremises are urged to ensure that ani-mals are slaughtered humanely by anexperienced person.

They must also obtain permissionfrom their local City of Cape Town envi-ronmental health office.

The SPCA strongly discourages theslaughter of cattle in places without ade-quate infrastructure to adequately res-train the animals prior to slaughter.

The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC),the Halaal Trust and local farm ownershave once again collectively committedto ensure the 2014 Eid-ul-adha is held notonly in accordance with the Muslim reli-gion and culture, but also in accordancewith the law.

“We would like to extend our gratitudeto the MJC and farm owners for theirwillingness to work together to ensurethat all animals are treated with respectand compassion during this time,” saidCoGH SPCA inspectorate manager Mo-yo Ndukwana.

SPCA Inspectors will be stationed atQurbani farms to ensure that animalsare sacrificed humanely and will encou-rage and offer to pre- or post-stun ani-mals to facilitate this.

They will also be monitoring the trans-portation, handling and housing of theestimated 5 000 animals destined forslaughter as part of this festival.

SPCA calls for humanetreatment of animalsover Qurbani

Baie dankie aan CompassionateChristian wat empatie metslagdiere bepleit (“Churchshould ease suffering”, Tyger-Burger, 24 September).In die paradys was geen

There’s a park situated be-tween the bend on Disa Road,Sipres Avenue and VuurpylRoad in Belhar. This is sup-posed to be a park for childrento play.Yet there are people who

from time to time use the onecorner behind the Eskomelectric boxes as a dumpingground. These culprits dumpgarden refuse in black bags orold rags and clothes.There’s a place in the area

where garden refuse can be leftand there are so many homeswhich would welcome dona-tions of old clothing.There are even supermarkets

who have trolleys whereclothing can be donated.It seems as if this is too

much effort for these culprits

Stop this illicitdumping in Belhar

to do.These culprits also seem to

dump at night, when everythingis quiet and dark – they shouldbe ashamed of themselves.Then there are the younger

adults who frequent the parkand leave beer bottles lyingunder the equipment wherechildren play.All these people are unruly

and disrespectful to the rest ofthe people living in the area.

I am as shocked as everyoneabout the article (“Dog shotdead, airgun bullet lodged inheart”, TygerBurger, 24 Septem-ber).I believe the person responsi-

ble for this cruel and dangerousact committed a criminaloffence. Whatever firearm wasused (with expert accuracy Imight add) the intent was tokill. I would pursue the matterfurther and not let him getaway with this heinous act. Hehas caused untold emotionalharm to a five-year-old boywhose pet dog meant everythingto him and the rest of thefamily. I hope they catch you.You deserve to be punished.

In response to Colin Sutcliffe’sletter “Traffic cops never seenin Durbanville” (TygerBurger,24 September). I agree withwhat he says, you hardly seeany traffic police anywhere. Afew weeks ago, a couple oftraffic officials set up a speedtrap in Durbanville and when Ispoke to them regarding thefour-way stop 100m down theroad, where people very rarelystop, their response was: “Sorrywe are instructed to speed traphere.” So what they weresaying is that they are notpolicing, but collecting revenue.If you go into the trafficdepartment to report anincident, you are asked tocontact Goodwood as the trafficdepartment in Durbanville isonly for licensing.

I am responding to the ridicu-lous letter from Edwin Kanne-meyer (“No more learners atschool crossings”, TygerBurger,3 September). Scholar patrolteaches children a sense ofresponsibility. Isn’t it timechildren learned to toughen up?A little rain never hurt anyone.When I was at primary

school, I was very proud to beon the scholar patrol, whichwas run like the army by MrBrewis. Parents need to lettheir children learn from theseexperiences.

LEWENSKIEKIE

As misdaad ’n amptelike ekonomiese

Durbanville sensei Graham Turner isno stranger to mixed martial arts(MMA) and has been on the mat for

the better part of 20 years.He recently met up with Nathan Raaths

from Johannesburg, who was awarded ablackbelt at theDeLaRivaBrazilian Jiu-Jit-su.“I actually started communicating with

Nathan on Facebook. It was about a monthago that he invited me up to Johannesburgto come and train with him at his gym.“It was a total new experience compared

to what you see in MMA fights, where youalso train without a shirt.“With the Marcello Monteiro system you

train and fight with a gi, which is the sameclothes that guyswearwhopractice karate.”“It changes everything because you can

control much more of the movements andmomentum by holding onto the gi of youropponent.“It’s always exciting and a challenge to

learn and expand your knowledge in the dif-ferent forms of MMA,” said Graham.Because of Graham’s years of experience,

sound technique and work rate, he has beengraded to the high level of purple belt andwill be graded for his brown belt in a fewweeks under the watchful eye of Raaths inCape Town.Graham and his students do their MMA-

training on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sa-

turdays, and gi-grappling onTuesdays,Wed-nesdays and Saturdays.“I’membracing the role as a teacher inhel-

ping students find their path. “It gives megreat satisfaction to see how these studentsgrow in stature and find confidence in them-selves and just becomingmore positive indi-viduals.“I’m also excited for Nathan to come down

to Cape Town in the nextmonth or so to host

a seminar of the Deliriva system ofMarcelloMonteiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.With this style of training, and in specific

with the upcoming seminar, wewant to helpand nurture people from all walks of life, notjust serious fighters who live and breatheMMA.”If you are interested to get join

A ction was the order of theday at the first Engen Volks-wagenCup race during the pe-

nultimate round of the national Su-per Series at Killarney on Saturday.

During the first lap, 15-year-oldSheldon van der Linde moved uptwo places into fourth place behindDaniel Rowe, Shaun La Reserveeand Dewald Brummer.

Brummer then took over the leaduntil he was passed by Rowe on thepenultimate lap. Although Van derLinde made it into third place, hewas less than half a second behindthe winner when they crossed theline.

Behind them, no concessions we-re made for “ladies first” as AndreaBate and Tasmin Pepper battled itout before finishing a meritorioussixth and seventh.

VanderLindemadenomistake in

the second race that he (just) wonfrom Brummer and Pepper. Mas-ters Class leader Matthew Hodgesdid well to finish fourth overall af-ter rolling his car onto its side du-ring the first race.

John Fourie (Alcohol KillerBMW), increased his points advan-tage in the first heat of the Bridge-stone Production Car categorywhen he avoided the Audi S4 threatposed by Hennie Groenewald (SasolRacing), Michael Stephen (EngenXtreme) and Gennaro Bonafede(Sasol Racing).

Stephen bounced back in thesecond race, which he won comfor-tably over Fourie and Gavin Cronjein the second Alcohol Killer Bee-mer, with Simon Moss (EngenXtreme Audi S4) in fourth place.

With unmistakable V8 sounds,flaming exhausts and characterslike Ben Morgenrood and the rug-gedRoelf duPlessis at thewheel, the

Sports andGT eventsweremade forthe regulars.

It was only right that Ben shouldwin the first one, although his Mus-tangwas relegated to third in the se-cond race. Alan Evewas the leadingsports car driver in both races.

Robert Wolk and Nicholas vanWeely were pitted against eachother and shared the honours in thesingle seater Formula Volkswagencategory. Scott Temple and KeganCampos achieved the same resultsin the Formula F1600 class.

The Midas Clubman class victo-ries went to Danie van Niekerk(BMW325), JohnKirsten (VWPolo),Alex Johnson (Audi quattro), BasieBurger (VW Golf 1), Rick Kloppers(Ford Escort) and Brendan Moore(VW Golf 1).

The next round of the Power Se-ries, which will be sponsored byWingfield Motors, is due to takeplace at Killarney on 11 October.
