Urban ‘farm’ sets trendDESIREÉ RORKE

An innovative form of hydroponic ur-ban crop farming in Northpine hasboth the City of Cape Town, the Wes-

tern Cape provincial government and twoother South African provinces keyed up toget on the bandwagon.

In his backyard in Northpine, engineerVernon Pretorius is currently growing 800tomato plants on a piece of land no biggerthan 63 m², yielding enough tomatoes to sus-tain a financially viable small farming busi-ness.

What makes this crop unique is the hydro-ponic technique used. It’s called NutrientFilm Technique (NFT), whereby a very shal-low stream of water containing all the dissol-ved nutrients required for plant growth isre-circulated (into an underground watertank) past the bare roots of the plants in awatertight gully or channel.

The depth of the circulating water is veryshallow, which ensures that the thick moistroot mat, which develops in the bottom of thechannel, is exposed to the air, resulting inan abundant supply of oxygen.

Says Pretorius: “The result of this uniquecombination of water, oxygen and nutrients

is a much higher, faster growing yield ofhigh quality produce, making it very pro-ductive.

It yields double the produce than conventi-onal hydroponic methods and ensures an all-year round production, by heating or chil-ling the water in which the crop grows.”

Pretorius started researching NFT eightyears ago after seeing it at a small farm inOudtshoorn.

After intense research he set up the infra-structure and has since grown lettuce,strawberries and tomatoes.

Although the initial infrastructure costhim R90 000, this small scale crop can gene-

rate a monthly income of R20 000.Pretorius now envisions a community

project in Northpine, creating an urban ve-getable “farm”, to empower the unemployedand impart skills.

After approaching the city and the provin-cial department of agriculture, both partiesvisited Pretorius’s yard to look at the initia-tive before vouching their support.

Even the Eastern Cape provincial depart-ment of agriculture is scheduled for a visitthis week, to launch a pilot project to empo-wer communities in that province.

TheMeridianPinehurst high school inDur-banville entered the 21st centuryof sciencesand technology with the assembling and“launching” of its very own satellite, a Can-Sat, last week.The satellite, which was developed by

F’SATI (French South African Institute ofTechnology) in collaboration with the Cur-ro Centre for Education Excellence, was“launched” last Wednesday under the gui-dance of Jaco deKock,CurroSchools’ curri-culum advisor for natural sciences andtechnology, and Bertus Brand, a scienceand technology teacher.The purpose is to prepare young scien-

tists into the field of exploration, accordingto De Kock. The two grade 9 classes assem-bled their own CanSat. After the satellite

was assembled, it was “launched” on therugby field with great expectation from thelearners.A CanSat – short for satellite in a can – is

a simulation of a real satellite – integratedwithin the volume and shape of a regularsoft drink can, said De Kock.“The challenge is to fit all the major sub-

systems found in a satellite, such as powerand communications, into a tin can of450 ml.“After release from a captive helium bal-

loon, the CanSat has to perform a certainmission and land safely on the ground.”Once “launched”, the satellite communi-

cates data such as temperature, air pressu-re and altitude to the computer through theground station.“This data will then be processed by the

learners and results will be presented in va-rious ways,” according to De Kock.

Three African elephants may soon beroaming the hills and winelands ofMeerendal wine estate outside Dur-

banville, depending on approval from Ca-peNature.

However, they will be in the full-timecontrol of trained elephant handlers in de-signated areas.

Imagine sipping wine on the restaurantstoep while the Big Feet walk past or en-joying the view on the farm dam while thegroup enjoys a mud bath.

It was not only this perfect marketingpicture, but more so the love for Africananimals of Herman Coertze, owner of Mee-rendal, that gave birth to the project in Ju-ne last year.

Coertze also owns a game farm near Be-la-Bela in theLimpopoprovince,where theelephants will come from the nearby Vaal-dam farm.

ApprovalMeerendal is awaiting final approval

fromCapeNature for a permit to transloca-te these elephants and keep them at Mee-rendal in compliance with the relevant re-gulations and land-use policy.

The Meerendal elephants will be leasedfrom the organisation, Elephants for Afri-ca Forever (EFAF), which was started in2005 by the world-recognised elephantwhisperer, Rory Hensman, who passedaway in March last year.

According to Deon Adriaanse, coordina-tor of the Meerendal project, the three ele-phants were tamed by Hensman himself.They were rescued when they were identi-fied to be culled in the Kruger NationalPark.

The elephants, all male, are the 21-year-old Tembo, Chishuru and Moya, respecti-vely 11 and 10 years old.

EFAF will provide long-term supervisi-on over the elephant programme whileproviding their qualified and trainedhandlers to be in charge of the elephantson a full-time basis.

The organisation will also be responsi-ble for the translocation of the elephantsfrom Bela-Bela to Meerendal.

InterestsThe Bigfeet Elephants @ Meerendal Wi-

neEstate programme is a key project of theBigfeet Elephant Foundation, which hasbeenestablishedbyMeerendal as a charityorganisation to help promote the interestsof elephants in South Africa.

Up to October 2013 an amount of morethan R100 000 has been raised for the Big-feet Elephant Foundation.

This was mostly achieved with thelaunch of a unique new wine project entit-led “BIGFEET – Pressed by Elephants”.

The three Meerendal elephants werepart of a group of six elephants that wereused in an advertisement to trample on thevines to “press the grapes” to make a Mee-rendal wine.

The wine was shipped internationallyand was an instant hit. Meerendal offeredto give R1 from every bottle of its “Big FeetWine” sold, to the Big Feet Foundation.

Elephants at Meerendal is not a far-fet-ched idea, said Adriaanse. Elephants inthe vicinity dates back to 1608 when JohnJourdain went ashore at Rietvlei (nearMilnerton) and travelled up the river to-wards the Tygerberg Hills.

The farm Meerendal was granted to JanMeerland by Governor Willem Adriaanvan der Stel in 1702.

Olifantskop, which is located betweenDurbanville and Philadelphia, was namedafter the elephant that occurred there upto the early 1700s.

A existing unused cellar on Meerendalwill be utilised as an elephant informationcentre. This centre will accommodate dis-plays of all aspects of the elephants, theirecology, human-elephant interactions,and biodiversity conservation. There willalso be a curio shop.

The elephants will follow a programmewith three interactive sessions with visi-tors per day. However, they will not be rid-den.

They will also do walks on designated

routes as part of their 30km daily exerciseprogramme. There are two dams on the pro-perty which allow the elephants to swim andmudbathe regularly.

They will also be allowed to graze freelyin a bana grassland (Olifantsgras), whichwas specially planted for this purpose. Theywill also be fed pellets.

At 17:00 they will be move to a camp bet-ween Eucalyptus trees on the farm, wherethey will be seperately stabled for the night– although still be able to see, smell and heareach other.

A new call centre introduced by the trafficdepartment to monitor traffic light faultsand failures on a 24 hour basis should speedup repairs and increase effectiveness of cur-rent devices.So says JamesVos, DeGrendel subcouncil

chairman.“The City now operates a 24 hour traffic

signal fault call centre, share-call number0860 00 1948, which enables the public to re-port faulty traffic lights” says Vos.The control box at each of the more than

1 300 intersections controlled by trafficlights has recently been fitted with, and now

displays a unique identification number, hesaid.This enables the City to identify the inter-

section, which in turn speeds up the processof getting a repair crew to attend to the pro-blem.However, posters and bills pasted over

control boxes are posing a big problem to theeffectiveness of the boxes and the system toreport failures.“How can anyone read the identification

number when it is obliterated by a bill pas-ted over it?” he said.He adds that the illegal posters and bills

pasted to electricity substations, meter box-es and traffic light control boxes are on theincrease. He condemns these as acts of van-dalism and says that together with stakedadvertising signs, and those tied to lamp-posts, the pasted ones “degrade the environ-ment, create the perception that matters areout of control and, as a result, the values ofhomes and businesses deteriorate”.“As if the situation wasn’t already bad

enough, poster pollution now poses a life-threatening consequence, because illegallypasted bills hamper identification of potenti-ally dangerous intersections,” he said.

“Just one of these posters could result inthe loss of life of a motorist or pedestrian,”saidVos, “and urgent actionmust be taken.”Traffic light failures impact adversely on

all road users, he said.With the new system any faults can be re-

ported, and once a call comes through, thecall centre operator logs the call and for-wards it to the appropriate official for imme-diate action, he said. “Depending on thenumber of faults reported, it might be neces-sary for the city to prioritise the most criti-cal faults so that they are attended to first,”he said.

Claire, 31, is a drug addict. She is alsoa rape victim and a mother, who hastried many times to shrug the habit

that cost her custody of her 6-year-old son.She earns a living begging, and by telling

her story she hopes to reach other addictsand generate some understanding about ad-diction and the destructive power of drugs.“Literally my whole life revolves around

getting and using of drugs – everything elsecomes second. Without drugs I can’t functi-on, so in order to do anything else I first needto have the drugs. Every single day is spentfrantically trying to just survive,” she says.“I usually wake up starting with withdra-

wal symptoms and have to make a planquickly before it gets too late, so I start wal-king in the direction of Bellville, asking peo-ple I meet along the way if they can pleasehelp with taxi fare, or something like that.

Tried most drugs“I don’t get high from using anymore, it’s

just to stay ‘not sick’. Once I’ve had my first

shot (heroin is her drug of choice) for the dayI can then start to really make money andwill go to different areas every day with dif-ferent stories to make money,” she says.She’s tried most drugs, Claire says.“I started with dagga and alcohol in high

school and soon progressed to doing speedand sometimes mandrax. Later in my teensI did the whole party scene and regularlyused ecstasy and cocaine then ephedrineand occasionally hallucinogenic drugs.“At the age of 18 I first used heroin with

my boyfriend at the time – who is now deadas a result of an overdose – and have beenstruggling to stop ever since. I was also ad-dicted to crack in my early twenties. At themoment I am injecting heroin and using tikon a daily basis.”Claire says it’s very easy to get drugs in

Bellville. “It is ridiculously easy to get drugs– the dealers will actually approach you ifthey think you’re looking for drugs. It’s alsorelatively cheap – at R35 for a quarter gramof heroin, or a bag of tik.“I think the police don’t have the resour-

ces or the manpower to effectively deal withall the drug dealers in Bellville.

“They also don’t have enough of the cor-rect information to catch the right people tomake a difference, because if you catch thesmall-time dealers, more will pop up thanthere was to begin with.”

Tough loveHer mom died 11 years ago and her father

remarried. He recently gave up trying tohelp her. “Last July they finally kicked meout for good and wouldn’t take me back andsent my son to live with his father. I thinkit hurts my family too much to see me likethis and they feel helpless to fix it so theyprefer to stay away from me.”Claire says she has no friends left. “I used

with my friends from school but they’re allclean now, except the ones who died. I havelost two boyfriends to drugs and countlessfriends as well as acquaintances over the ye-ars.”During February this yearwhile on a high

she ended up in Delft where she was raped,but can’t recall details of her assailants.Claire says a lack of self-esteem and a bad

relationship with her parents drove her todrugs. “Different people deal with adverse

situations in differentways and I unfortuna-tely ended up using drugs.”Shedescribesusingdrugsas “someone tel-

ling me everything is going to be okay.”But the withdrawal symptoms are “abso-

lute agony”. Using means feeling normal,she says. It broke her heart to lose her son.“Yes, I was high at the time, that’s why he

was taken away, because I was using. It bre-aks my heart every day that I can’t be withhim all the time and be there for him everyday after schoo, especially because he’sgoing through such a hard time and doesn’tunderstand why he can’t be with me.”Claire has spent a total of almost five years

– intermittently over the last 12 years – inrehab.“I have to believe I can rehabilitate – if I

knew that for the rest of my life I would beenslaved by heroin I honestly think I wouldkill myself right now, because there wouldbe no point in carrying on like this with nohope of recovery.Claire has a simple wish: “To have a chan-

ce at a new life in a small town away fromdrugs, where there is a job that I could dothat would sustain me and my son”.

While we all know local rockstar, Mark Haze, as just that, arocker, he wants to show fansanother side.Mark says creating different

kinds of shows for corporategigs has allowed him to showca-se his different talents and re-mindedhimwhyhe lovesmusicin the first place.“Before you are a full time

musician, you work nine to fi-ve, you cram in a rehearsalwherever you can with yourband, you get on stage, you beltout everything you have insideof you, and rock ’n roll, for me,still is the best way forme to ex-press myself,” the Idols starsays.However, Mark says lately

he’s been enjoying playing themusic he didwhenhewas youn-ger, like a little bit of blues andsome acoustic stuff.The new father says he uses

a lot of time when his little oneis asleep to practise differentstyles. He has also just done aduet with local blues song-stress, NatashaMeister and shewill also be on stage at his showat Die Boer.

mer Gareth, have also been re-miniscing about the things theyused to do when they werechildren:“Like him playing on boxes

to studio to record a new single,“Lonely”, about touring, andwhile it’s still rock ’n roll, thesingle will have a bit of a Mo-town feel to it.“Themore I listen tomusic to-

notion that music has to be so-mething new and believes in-stead thatmusic is simplyaboutmaking something awesome.Lately his inspiration comesmore from the ’50s and ’60s.

A traffic impact study to be done on the newBrackenfell Boulevard link road, might re-sult in measures to relieve the traffic con-gestion on this road.Local motorists are at their wits’ end sin-

ce the opening of this road inDecember lastyear.Extremely high volumes of traffic have

been experienced since the extention of themajor road that now links Vierlanden inDurbanville with Brackenfell.To this end ward councillor Carin Bry-

nard last week tabled a motion at Subcoun-cil 9 (Koeberg), to request a traffic impactstudy be done on the new extension of Brac-kenfell Boulevard.“The new road, opened in December, has

had a significant impact on traffic flow. Thesinchronisation of traffic lights also needsto be assessed as peak hour congestion le-ads to rat running through suburbs adja-cent to the link between Azalia Crescentand Sheba Street,” she said.Over the last two months, many local re-

sidents complained about this traffic con-gestion. One such motorist, Liza Coetzee,travels on Brackenfell Boulevard everymorning to drop her children at Bracken-fell Primary School in the mornings.Both Brackenfell primary and high

schools are accessible by this road only forresidents in the eastern suburbs.“Before the link road was opened it took

me approximately 10 minutes to drive thethree kilometres from my house to theschool eachmorning. It now takes anythingfrom 20 to 30 minutes,” she told TygerBur-ger last week.The subcouncil subsequently approved

that a traffic impact assesment study beconducted as soon as possible and that a re-port be tabled at the nextmeeting inMarch.

Is your prospective tenant a criminal? Thisquestion seems to feature more and more ascriminals continue to find ways to secure le-ase agreements of residential properties,where stable neighbourhoods can becomeproblem areas within months.

In the northern suburbs there are severalhomes under surveillance by the police andneighbourhood watches where reporteddrug abuse or dealing and prostitution arehappening in overcrowded rented proper-ties, often neighbouring law-abiding fami-lies with little children or vulnerable pensio-

ners. Derrek Bock of the VRCID that opera-tes in Bellville and Parow, says homeowners often bring bad tenants upon them-selves by not ensuring that their prospecti-ve tenants are who they say they are, or notdoing a proper background check on them.

“Our call to property owners is to makesure that your tenant is above board,” hesaid in a letter to TygerBurger.

But Neels de Bod, who has been an estateagent in Parow for 34 years, says this is ea-sier said than done. “Landlords and particu-larly estate agents, are governed by moreproperty related laws than can be mentio-ned. Almost without exception these laws allfavour the tenant, whether the tenant is a

saint, sinner, criminal or law abiding citizenmatters none,” he says. He adds that pros-pective tenants prefer to tell one about theiractivities within their place of worship, notabout their lucrative drug business.

“Agents may not discriminate againstprospective tenants on the basis of race, sex,religion or being refugees,” he says.

To this Bock replies: “Our request is thatleasing agents try and find out as much aspossible about prospective tenants, likewhere did they rent from before and fromwhich agent, do they possibly still owe out-standing rentals and so on. We awe are sim-ply saying that we all need to be extra vigi-lant.”

On Saturday 23 February, aftercoming back from town, I foundmy four-month-old kitten in ourgarden, her back legs werelame. I rushed her to BellvilleAnimal Hospital as I thoughtshe had been hit by a car andher back was broken.

X-rays were taken of her back

and back legs, but nothing waswrong. On Monday, the vetagain took x-rays but this timeof the top half of her body.

It was found that she hadbeen shot with a pellet or airgun. Nothing could be done tosave her and she had to be putto sleep at only four monthsold!

What are we as humanscoming to? Pellet and air gunsshould be banned.

Parents, please do not buyyour parents these dangeroustoys – a pellet gun is not a toy.It manes and kills.

I am the average South Africanand therefore enjoy a decentbraai at least once a week.

However, nowadays it isbecoming a costly exercise withthe prices of everything rising,but being a good South Africanit is not negotiable whether tobraai or not.

So to beat rising costs, Idecided to braai just once aweek and to buy my wood inbulk which will cost me less.Something I never consideredwas the slyness of the “woodpeople” – specifically referringto the people selling wood nextto Kenridge Primary School onweekends. About two weeks agoI had replenished my wood andwent to them and ordered 1 000pieces at R1 per piece – equat-ing to R1 000. It was to bedelivered at my home. In duetime they arrived and deliveredthe ordered wood. After theyleft, I was looking at theamount of wood and it seemedas if I was done in. Whencounting the wood, I discoveredthey delivered only 600 pieces,crooking me of R400. I am sodisappointed, because previous-ly I offered the same guys acold beer for their effort – thiswhile they were cheating meblind!

Members of the South African police areequipping themselves with how to speakMandarin in order to better assist the Chine-se nationals now living in South Africa.

A three-month course, funded by the go-verment of the People’s Republic of China,is offered by the Confucius Institute at UCTand hosted at the Grand Cape China in Mil-nerton.

WO Annacletta Mothoalo, spokespersonfor the Kleinvlei police who is attending thecouse, said the purpose of the programme isto teach officers basic Mandarin in order tocommunicate better with Chinese nationalsin Cape Town.

According to her the police do not receive

a lot of cases from members of the Chinesecommunity in areas such as Eersteriver.

“But if you go to an area like Milnertonor the airport there will be cases to be dealtwith,” Mothoalo said.

She said the Chinese nationals requestedtheir government’s help in this regard.

“The Chinese government said they arewilling to pay and to teach the police officerstogether with traffic officers and law enfor-cement how to speak Mandarin.

“The course is very interesting, but it isalso difficult.

“You are supposed to learn the tones, andfor each tone there is a character.

“The characters are very difficult becauseof their designs, but they showed us how todo it.

“At the beginning it was difficult but if you

apply yourself it becomes a bit easier,” Mo-thoalo explained.

She said an oral test is planned for laterthis month.

“The women will then be wearing traditio-nal Chinese dresses and do spiritual dan-cing. After that there is going to be a sessionwhere we have to introduce ourselves inChinese.”

According to Mothoalo several police offi-cers are taking the course.

“Some are sector commanders, some arecommunication officers.”

Mothoalo said the top three students willbe travelling to China for further trainingfor two months. That is why I am fighting.I want to go to Beijing, China,” she smiled.

1.7 Eienaars moet om die korting aansoek doen in die jaar wat ’n nuwe algemenewaardasie of aanvullende waardasie, na gelang van omstandighede, inwerking gestel word. Aansoeke met die inwerkingstelling van ’n nuwealgemene waardasie moet die Stad bereik teen 31 Augustus van dieboekjaar waarin die waardasie in werking gestel sal word. Aansoeke met dieinwerkingstelling van ’n aanvullende waardasie moet die Stad bereik teendie laaste dag van die derde maand na die inwerkingstellingsdatum vandie waardasie. Indien nie, kan geen sodanige korting vir daardie boekjaretoegestaan word nie.

2. VERBRUIKSTARIEWE EN -HEFFINGSBTW teen 14% word by die volgende dienste bygevoeg: water, sanitasie, elektrisiteiten vaste-afvalbestuur.

2.1 WATER

Drie stelle watertariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief, 20%-

verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppel aan die vlakvan watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die 10%-verminderingstariefas norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít die tarief wees wat geld. Ditkan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkings hersien word.

’n Verhoging van 8% in waterverbruikstariewe word voorgestel.

2.1.12 In pas met die aanvaarding van die beleid oor stedelike landbou is ’n gratistoewysing van 10 kℓ per maand ingestel vir die uitsluitlike doeleinde vanbestaansboerdery deur omskrewe kwesbare groepe.

2.1.13 Huishoudings in wooneenhede op gemengdegebruik-eiendomme kan om’n gratis toewysing van 6 kℓ per eenheid per maand aansoek doen. ’nBeëdigde verklaring sal vereis word, en die aansoek sal op grond van diepersentasie van die hoofgebruik ondersoek en oorweeg word.

2.1.14 Bestaande skuilings vir haweloses/ouetehuise (buiten dié wat ashuishoudelike groepe geklassifiseer is)/tehuise vir die gesondheid vandiegene met fisiese of geestelike gestremdhede

Hoogtepunte van voorgestelde wysigings

• Die persentasie stygings in blok 2 van die volledig huishoudelike kategorieoorskry die standaardstyging weens die verlaging in die subsidievlak in hierdieblok, wat op sy beurt deur verbruikspatrone en die watervraagstrategiegenoodsaak word.

• Trapsgewyse tariewe (1-6) is vanaf 1 Julie 2013 vir die huishoudelikegroepskategorie ingestel op grond van vorige oorlegpleging met kliënte.Verdere stappe is gedoen om dié kategorie verder in lyn met die volledigehuishoudelike kategorie te bring.

• Veranderinge in diverse tariewe en prosedures, onder meer die voortgesettestygings met betrekking tot behandelde afvalwater (bepaald vir gholfbane),uitroeptariewe van watervraagbestuurtoestelspanne vir kliënte wat niédeernisgevalle is nie, sowel as voorafbetaalde brandkrane, word in bylae 4 bydie begrotingsdokument uiteengesit.

• ’n Nuwe tarief vir die toepassing van serwitute van deurgang met betrekkingtot water sowel as die vereistes vir deposito’s/waarborge wat in geval vaninfrastruktuurskade aangewend moet word.

• Staking van verbruikersdeposito’s vir huishoudelike kliënte met ingang van1 Julie 2014.

2.2. SANITASIE

Drie stelle sanitasietariewe word voorgestel (10%-verminderingstarief,20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppelaan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, sal dít dietarief wees wat geld. Dit kan egter later na gelang van verdere vereiste beperkingshersien word.

Die verskil tussen die gemiddelde en werklikestyging spruit uit die verhaling van die tekort aan inkomste uit die hulptarief virblok 1.

• Verbruikers wat 450 kWh per maand ontvang, sal dieselfde persentasie stygingwaarneem, ongeag die tarief wat vir hulle geld. Daar is dus geen verandering indie subsidievlak wat hierdie verbruikers op die hulptarief ontvang nie.

• GRATIS BASIESE ELEKTRISITEIT: Hulptariefkliënte wat minder as 250 kWh permaand ontvang, sal ’n gratis basiese toevoer van 60 kWh kry, terwyl diegene wattussen 250 kWh en 450 kWh per maand ontvang ’n gratis basiese toevoer van25 kWh per maand sal kry.

• Die kategorie “Klein kragverbruiker 1” met die buitespits-kombinasie word sedert1 Julie 2012 tot slegs bestaande kliënte beperk. Die buitespits-komponente stygook met ’n bogemiddelde bedrag om hierdie tarief uiteindelik uit te faseer.

• Tydspesifieke tariewe is herstruktureer om minimum pariteit met Eskom Megaflexte verseker.

LET WEL: Maandelikse diensheffings word bereken as die daaglikse diensheffing,vermenigvuldig met die getal dae in die rekeningtydperk.

in Cape Town, to Bay Harbour Mar-ket and Ellingtons, vocalist GivenNkanyane and guitarist, ManfredKlose, are comfortable on almostany stage.Given has a novel way of explai-

ning the band’s sound: “Thinkabout a mixture of beef stroganoff,with chutney and banana.”“It doesn’t seem like it works, but

that is some delicious stuff.”Moving away from food,Given ex-

plains that their music is a mixtureof everything they like which stemsfrom where they come from. Forexample, Given comes from an R’nB, gospel, jazzy background, whileManfred has more of a rock back-ground.

Song writingGiven says he likes to think their

music is a mixture of blues, a littlebit of rock, some folk, and “a hint ofeverything”.Manfred points out that they are

still growing with their sound andare writing as many songs as possi-ble at the moment, in an attempt tofigure out what exactly it is thatthey do.“For now we just want to make

goodmusic and seewhat people’s re-actions are to that,” he says.Stone Jets formed only last year,

but today (Wednesday) they are re-leasing their debut-EP,River, whichincludes five songs that the two re-corded when they came together.The EP will be available from

most digital distribution stores, butphysical copies will be available attheir shows. They are also looking

at distributing it through local mu-sic stores.Stone Jets are working on their

first full-length album which theyhope to release later in theyear. “Weare writing as many songs as wecan, so that our debut album is jam-packed with hard-knock hits,” Gi-ven says.Given started writing songs when

he lived inCapeTownbefore, but be-cause he didn’t understand the in-dustry, he decided to move back toJohannesburg, where he kept wri-ting and tried to put a band together.

Paul Gleed (29) of Durbanville and SpencerWeyers (29) of SomersetWest, will participa-te in the 2014 Absa Cape Epic as team Gleed-Speed. This year’s race, which takes placefrom 23 to 30March, will see riders complete718km of intense cycling with 14 850m ofclimbing, starting with the Prologue atMee-rendalWine Estate in Durbanville and finis-hing 8 days later at the traditional Grand Fi-nale at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somer-set West.Weyers, who is a telemetry technician by

profession and Gleed, a regional manager atSpinnaker Software, will be taking on theAbsa Cape Epic for the first time. Says

Gleed: “I have followed theCapeEpic on tele-vision for years. In 2013, my partner and Irented a motorhome and followed the eventand that’s when we decided no matter what,we’ll do it.”Weyers and Gleed train together once a

week.Says Gleed: “We try for once on weekends

as we do not reside in the same town.”According to Weyers, the most important

ingredient to completing theAbsaCapeEpicsuccessfully is teamwork.Gleed believes communication is key.He explains: “Communication between

you and your partner is the most important

ingredient to help pull each other through.”When asked what makes him want to par-

ticipate in the race, Gleed says:“It’s the challenge to complete such a

mes in the country when it was shortlistedas a finalist for the 2014 Discovery SportIndustry Awards.Launched in 2009 as a joint initiative bet-

ween Spur and Amarider, the league hasshown a 45% year-on-year growth and hasexceeded all initial projections in termsnumbers and reach.The league has grown explosively and

has expanded from 900 entries and 20events in 2009 to 7 506 entrants taking partin 52 events hosted in nine South Africanprovinces as well as neighbouring coun-tries Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho.League co-ordinator Meurant Botha of

Amarider attributes the amazing growthof the league to the hands-on involvementof Spur SteakRanches aswell as the effortsof a team of dedicated regional organisersand school co-ordinators.He further states that one of the key ob-

jectives of the league is to leave a legacyfor participants by building tracks onschool property or community grounds.

Growth“We are really happy with the steady

growth of the league in terms of partici-pants, more regional events and newtracks being developed in collaborationwith schools and municipalities. The figu-res for 2013 have shot up tomore than 7 000entries. The level of competition has alsoimproved significantly since the launch ofthe league five years ago,” says Botha.The Spur School Mountain Bike League

Racing towards gloryWhat a day Sunday turned out to be

at the fourth and final cycling raceof the 2014 Hero Challenge Criteri-

um series at Century City.The event started at 14:15 with the catego-

ry 4 race, which hosted all club membersthat wanted to participate, followed by cate-gory 3 at 15:15 which comprised of the u-16,u-14 and u-12 cyclists.

Shortly after category 3 started their racethe skies turned grey and opened up with aslight drizzle, but the race ended in sunlight

and relatively dried up roads. Everyonesighed in relief, but unfortunately this wasshort lived.

Nail-bitingAs category 2 lined up the skies opened up

once again, more fiercely this time. Misera-ble weather aside, the riders held on andraced their hearts out in a very tight and of-ten nail biting race.

In category 1 for elite riders, we werejoined by some of the top cyclists in South

Africa. This included the Bonita’s Pro Cy-cling Team, WCC Africa MTN QhubekaFeeder Team and ASG. This promised to bean edge-of-your-seat race and the cyclistsdidn’t disappoint.

From the first bell the racers gave it every-thing theyhaddespite thewet and rainy con-ditions. RyanFelgate ofASG took first in theelite category, followed by Clint HendricksandMorne vanNiekerkwhoweremere splitseconds apart. Maroesjka Matthee, a multi-ple SA champion, took the honours in the la-

dies’ category.There were three hotspots during the elite

race at the 15, 30 and 45-minute marks withClint Hendricks taking the first spot, JaydeJulius the second and Ryan Felgate thethird.

The fun isn’t over yet. Lights By Linea inassociationwithKIADiepRiver, Trek, Craftand eCentric Payment Systems will host awinter series of long distance one-day races,with another group of criterium events inSpring.
