“Ek het ook ’n hele paar kollegasverloor en dit was vir my baie erg.”

NSRI hands full infestive season

Members of the National Sea Rescue In-stitute (NSRI) at Melkbosstrand had abusy festive season.

Local station commander Rhine Barnessaid they were involved in a number of neardrownings in December as well as a drown-ing at Silverstroom beach last week.

On 16 December a 12-year-old girl fromFisantekraal was saved from drowning. Shewas taken to hospital.

On Christmas day they provided medicalassistance to a 28-year-old man from CapeTown who also almost drowned. He was tak-en to hospital.

Boxing Day saw the local rescuers in-volved in many first aid type injuries andmedical calls.

The NSRI members aided a 12-year-oldchild and an 80-year-old woman who bothsuffered from heat exhaustion and dehydra-tion. A young woman (19) was treated aftershe suffered an epileptic seizure on Melk-bosstrand beach. Barnes’s team also helpedlocal firefighters in treating a woman whosuffered a severe asthma attack on thebeach. Although they managed to stabiliseher breathing on site, the 32-year-old womanfrom Atlantis died at New Somerset Hospitalthe next day.

They were also on hand to help in the neardrowning of a five-year-old girl at Silver-stroom strand.

“We assisted the lifesavers and medical

emergency personnel in giving her treat-ment. She was taken to hospital in a stablebut serious condition,” Barnes said.

On 29 December a 19-year-old man was res-cued after almost drowning at Melk-bosstrand beach.

The holiday almost took a tragic turn forJason James from Centurion when he be-came distressed in the water at 14:15.

A jet skier noticed that James was in trou-ble and helped him to get ashore.

He was then transported by a Metro Emer-gency Medical Services ambulance to NewSomerset Hospital for further medical treat-ment.

On 1 January another resident fromFisantekraal was saved from drowning atMelkbosstrand. The 16-year-old was stabi-lised and taken to hospital by ambulance.

A young man from Atlantis drowned atSilverstroom strand last Wednesday after hewas caught in a rip current.

“When we arrived the local lifeguardswere already searching for the man. We aid-ed in the search until the police divers ar-rived and took over,” Barnes said.

The man was presumed drowned and hisbody has not yet been found.

On Friday they assisted a 19-year-old manfrom Atlantis after he had an epileptic sei-zure in the water at Melkbosstrand.

On behalf of the local NSRI station hethanked the Melkbos fire station, West CoastVolunteer Ambulance Services, Metro Am-bulance Services, law enforcement and par-amedic Steward Seini for their assistance.

Armed gang pulls offShimansky jewel job

This year started badly for Shimansky Jew-ellery in Canal Walk when five armed sus-pects pulled off an audacious robbery andfled with several hundred thousand of randof jewellery.

According to Milnerton police spokesper-son, Warrant Officer Daphne Dell, the menrobbed the store at 12:30 on 1 January.

Canal Walk CEO, Gavin Wood, elaborates:“Two of the suspects distracted the securityguard that was positioned in the area closeto the store and three entered the Shiman-sky store. The suspects who entered thestore were armed and smashed one of thedisplay cabinets, getting away with an un-disclosed amount of jewellery. No shotswere fired and no one was injured.”

Says Dell: “The suspects fled on foot andwere noticed leaving Canal Walk in a whiteHonda. This vehicle was also reported stolenthe previous week.”

Apparently a security guard close to thejewellery store noticed when the suspects

smashed the cabinet and alerted the securitypersonnel via the shopping complex’s con-trol room.

The police and centre security were on thescene within minutes and are currently in-vestigating the incident.

Security footage clearly shows the robberspointing firearms at personnel in the store.

“We have clear security footage of the fac-es of the robbers as they exited the parkinglot,” continues Dell. She adds that in theirrush to get away, the robbers drove throughthe security boom at the parking lot en-trance.

This is not the first time that Canal Walkwas targeted, as Wood explains: “We areaware of similar incidents that have takenplace at the centre since its opening in 2000,however, in the recent past there have beenno incidents of this nature other than theShimansky incident. We believe this is dueto proactive approach towards security.”

Wood concludes that the centre will con-tinue to assess its “rigorous” security pre-cautions on an ongoing basis.

It’s summer ‘diarrhoea season’CHILTON MELLEM

Summer is known for sunnydays and fun at the beach, butaccording to the Western Capehealth department, diarrhoeais very prevalent for at thistime.

According to Dr Ivan Bromfield,executive director at the depart-ment of health, children under theage of five are particularly vulner-able to diarrhoea.

Dehydration can happen very

quickly and carry serious conse-quences including death in somecases.

It is noted that this disease flour-ishes in areas of poor sanitation aswell as contaminated water andfood.

Even though contaminated foodand water are the most commonways of getting diarrhoea, thereare also more ways of becomingcontaminated or spreading it.

Touching contaminated areassuch as tables, toys or even thehand of someone who is infected

can cause the spread of the dis-ease.

“November to May is usuallyknown as the diarrhoea season.

“The season is the result ofwarmer weather conditionswhich are favourable for the over-breeding of viruses, bacteria, tox-ins and other pathological agentsthat affect the gut. Much diar-rhoea is basically the result oforal-faecal contamination.”

A few signs to look out for if yoususpect your child has diarrhoeaare vomiting, a runny tummy, a fe-

ver or vomiting which leads to de-hydration or a loss of appetite.

In infants, an additional sign tolook out for is if your child refusesto breastfeed.

In cases such as this, the Salt-Sugar Solution (SSS) is recom-mended: make a mixture of one li-tre of clean water, eight teaspoonsof sugar and half a teaspoon of salt.

This should be given to the childregularly but if the symptoms per-sist, the child should be taken tothe nearest clinic immediately.

If a child suffering from severe

symptoms is treated early enoughand given proper care, they can re-cover within a few days.

. Keeping your hands clean isone of the most important steps instopping the spread or contractingthe disease. When washing yourhands, use soap and clean waterand wash for at least 20 seconds.

. Make sure you kill harmfulbacteria by cooking food to theproper internal temperature.

. Use refrigerated leftovers assoon as possible, an ideal period isbetween two to three days.

Chita, ’n ses jaar oue Engelse Jack Russell,het spoorloos verdwyn van die kleinhoewenadat haar eienaar, Milanté van der Walt, enhaar gesin met vakansie na Langebaan ver-trek het.

Van der Walt se ouers het in hul huis geblyom die diere vir die vakansie op te pas.

“Chita is nie net sommer enige hond nie.Sy is ons ‘London lady’.”

Haar man, Kobus – tóé nog haar kêrel – hetdie hondjie sewe jaar gelede vir haar gekooptoe hulle nog in Londen gebly het.

“Dit was toe ons een jaar uitgegaan het,”het sy gesê.

“Sy is met liefde teruggevlieg teen ’n kostevan R25 000. Dit het ons nie gepla nie, wantons is so lief vir haar. Sy is ons ou hondedog-tertjie,” het sy gesê.

Dit was ook Chita wat, met die trouring in’n sakkie om haar nek, ’n belangrike rol ge-speel het in die huweliksaanbod ’n paar jaarlater.

“Ons seuntjie en Chita is ook beste maats.Hy vra my elke dag waar sy is en loop en roep

haar die hele tyd. “Dit voel soos asof ’n kindnie in die huis is nie. Ons harte is in stukkegebreek,” het sy gesê.

Sy het al die diere-welsynsorganisasies en

veeartse gebel op soek na Chita, maar sonderenige sukses.

Communityday focuseson the kidsIn a bid to keep schoolchildren occupiedover the festive period, the Kuils River po-lice in collaboration with the departmentof sport and recreation organised a sportsday at Zevenwacht wine farm on 16 Decem-ber. According to Captain Isaac vanNiekerk of the Kuils River police, the daywas a huge success and the communitymembers all pulled together to support thechildren.

“It is heartwarming to see how much thecommunity cares for its children. Theybrought food and they were cheering thechildren along. I have noticed that this isunique to Kuils River,” said Van Niekerk.

The children were not the only ones toreceive special treatment. After a long dayof standing on the sidelines supportingtheir children, the mothers were treated toa pampering session.

Van Niekerk hopes that through com-munity events such as this the communitywill work with the police in building a saf-er future for their children.

“I believe that in 2012 we will be able toimprove a lot on community safety,” saidVan Niekerk.

Over the festive period the Kuils Riverpolice have also increased police visibilitythroughout the Kuils River area.

“We ask that the public must be vigilantand lock their doors and close their win-dows when they leave the house,” said VanNiekerk.

“Criminals are opportunists and theywill only commit a crime when they see aneasy target.”

Wees positief in 2012Nog ’n nuwe jaar het aangebreek.Maar kan ons werklik positiefwees oor die jaar wat voor ons uit-strek? Daar is soveel negatieween slegte dinge in hierdie wêreldwaarin ons lewe.

Neem maar net die gevolge vandie resessie op baie mense se le-wens. Meer as agt miljoen mensein Suid-Afrika is in ’n skuldlasvasgevang waaruit hulle nie kankom nie. Die meeste ekonomevoorspel die resessie se impak salin 2012 voortduur.

Daar is steeds dinge soos kor-rupsie en misdaad en werkloos-heid wat mense moedeloos enselfs bang maak. En dalk het jyook gehoor dat die einde van wê-reld hierdie jaar (volgens die Ma-ja-kalender) op 21 of 23 Desemberaanbreek.

Kan ’n mens dus werklik nogpositief wees oor hierdie nuwejaar? Die antwoord is dat jy dit ab-soluut kan doen. Net die feit datjy leef, gee klaar hoop. ’n Nuwejaar is soos ’n nuwe begin met nu-we geleenthede. Die belangrikeding is egter dat ons ‘n keuse het.Elke mens is geskape met ’n vryekeuse. Ons kan kies hoe ons diejaar wil aanpak: met ’n negatieweof met ’n positiewe gesindheid.

Dit is maklik om te sê dat jy po-sitief moet wees, maar hoe doen’n mens dit? Daar is baie manierehoe jy dit kan doen. Hier aan diebegin van die jaar wil ek net vierpraktiese riglyne vir jou gee hoeom positief in 2012 te wees:

. Leef elke oomblik met volle

dankbaarheid. Die kunstenaarHenri Matisse het gesê: “Daar isaltyd blomme vir diegene wat ditgraag wil sien.” Al sal dit partydae moeilik gaan, moet jy steedsdie mooi engoeie dinge injou lewe raak-sien en waar-deer.

. Leef met hu-mor. Lag elkedag. Lag maakgesond. Leer omhumor in situa-sies in te sien.Humor stimu-leer die brein engee energie.

. Leef ge-sond. Oefen eneet reg en hand-haaf gesonde ge-woontes.

. Leer om tegee. Verandervan “ek wil hê” na “ek wil gee”.

’n Mens moet egter ook realis-ties wees. Daar sal in hierdie jaarook negatiewe dinge en teleur-stellings oor ons pad kom. Hoemoet jy hierdie negatiewe dingeen teleurstellings hanteer wan-neer jy daarmee gekonfronteerword?

Dis belangrik om te onthou datdie lewe aan ’n mens met ’n handmet kaarte uitgedeel word. Dithelp nie om daaroor te kla nie ente mor waarom dit of dat met joumoes gebeur het nie. Jy moetspeel met die kaarte in jou hand.

vrystelling geslaag.Leendert van Oostrum, ’n on-

The spoiling was not limited to the chil-dren with special needs only; their familieswere also made to feel special. Parents weretreated to their own picnicbasket filled with goodies.An additional table was setaside and boasted deliciousChristmas meals such asturkey, gammon, cold meatsand cake.

Children were enter-tained further by A Cat in aHat and clowns. FatherChristmas made a surpriseturn to give children andtheir parents gifts, makingsure not to exclude anyone.

“We want it to be a familyday and not leave anyoneout,” Said Sue van derLinde, founder of IrisHouse.

The children of Iris Housewere given the opportunityto experience equine (horse)therapy. With this therapychildren get to bond withthese majestic creatures.According to Van der Linde, the childrentook well to the therapy and had a positiveresponse.

“The effect the horses had on the childrenwas remarkable. Each child thoroughly en-joyed their ride,” said Van der Linde.

Iris House is in the process of finding aplace where they can operate. At the mo-

ment, they visit the homes of the childrenand their families and spendup to fourhourswith them. In this time, they give the chil-dren attention which includes play therapy,giving them their medication and takingcare of their personal needs.

Iris House is just under a year old and con-sists of three helpers who volunteer theirtime to children with special needs.

Their services are provided free of chargeand give parents with these children achance to rest.

Not all rockers are ‘dark characters’LOUISA STEYL

“Our music will be listenable fora long time.”

So says Adam van der Reit,rhythm guitarist, songwriter andengineer for The Summer Under-ground.

With a new lead vocalist in War-ren Alexander, and guitarist, LukeRevington, added to the mix, thisNorthern Suburbs band has under-gone a transformation of sorts.

The rest of The Summer Under-ground is made up of Adrian Lan-geveld on drums, percussion andkeyboards, Brett Reynolds on bassand Sean Schwartz as sound engi-neer.

The band has been playing withthe current line-up for a year, butThe Summer Underground hasbeen around since 2009.

Adam explains that he was of-fered an opportunity to write some

songs for payment, so he put a bandtogether to play the songs.

“It started as a professional stu-dio project that took on a life of itsown,” Adam says.

The band believes that a goodname is essential.

Brett explains that The SummerUndergroundrefers to “the title giv-en to thenotionof not enjoying lightand heat”.

“It was a quip that the previousvocalist came up with,” he says.

The name plays on the stereotypeof “rockers” being dark charactersand as Adam points out: “It doesn’tsound like a normal band name.”

“It’s hard rock ’n roll,” Warrensays of their music.

“It’s ‘kinda’ like the 90s heyday,”Adrian adds.

He says when Warren and Luke

joined the band, they also reinvig-orated it. “Very quickly it gelledvery nicely,” Adrian says.

Adam points out that some songshad to be rewritten to suit male vo-cals instead of their usual femalevocalist.

“It was a rebirth of sorts,” hesays.

Thebandagrees that therewasal-so a new enthusiasm in the group.

“Overall we are a more organisedunit,” Brett states. Before, therewere questions within the groupabout commitment to the band, butBrett says: “The current line-up ischanging all of that.”

The band’s performance at Rockthe River over New Year’s was fullof this new energy.

The band has just finished re-cording their EP, and they have anew album in the works.

“Adam is the band’s primarysongwriter,” Adrian says.

He comes up with the music anddigital phrases, before the songs arehammered into shape, knitting inthe drum line and bass.

With influences that range fromearly rock pioneers, like Black Sab-bath, to the other extreme, like 80sand electronic music, you can ex-pect interesting sounds from thisband.

Matrics do well,but the future?The Western Cape matric class of 2011 hasdone us proud. The province not onlyachieved the best matric pass rate in thecountry, SouthAfrica’s topmatriculant al-so hails from this province.

Kudos too to the Western Cape educa-tion minister, the education departmentand all the other role players who contrib-uted to the province improving its 2010pass rate of 76,8 percent to 82,9 percent.

Another group of people that deserves amention in this success story is the par-ents. Despite the fact that many of themstruggled financially, they still supportedtheir children emotionally and financial-ly. They were willing to make sacrifices inorder to enrol their children at schoolswith a good academic record. Many ofthem spent hundreds of rands each monthon extra classes.

The challenge is now to get all schools,even those in impoverished areas, to pro-duce the same results.

The department of basic education’s de-cision to restrict Model C schools frompaying teacher bonuses and other finan-cial incentives will further weaken the al-ready struggling public education system.

It would be no surprise if some of theseteachers leave the public schools to jointhe private schools where they’ll at leastreceive the recognition – and pay – theydeserve.

The reply from Rene from AACL wasshocking. So what if people get “angry”knowing the figures! It’s about the ani-mals. No, it won’t solve the problem butit will make it better by preventing somepeople from deciding to breed (which isthe cause of the problem in the first place).

I volunteered at a shelter for years. Itdid upset me when an animal got eutha-nised, but because I was aware of thisproblem, I understood and did not judgethe shelter.

It is better than to let animals suffer inthe street because we are running out ofplaces for them.

Before you decide to breed your animal,do yourself a favour and see how many ofthose specific animals are already in theshelters. You’ll be shocked.

There are even rescue “groups” for spe-cific breeds. (eg: border collie rescue andmany many more). Rather adopt an ani-mal from these places than from a breederor someone’s house, encouraging them tobreed further.

Also do your research on the type of dogthat you are interested in, to make surethat he is the best option for you and thatyou can supply him with what his specificbreed requires. So called “pavement spe-cials” are still the best breeds with theleast health issues.

In ag geneem al die negatiewe omstandig-hede waarin hierdie mense werk, elke dag,met siek mense, sommige ongeneesbaar, res-pekteer ek elke sekonde van hulle werk.

Ek het nie besef en sou seker nooit, as ditnie vir die diagnosering van my suster sebaarmoederkanker was nie, geweet het wat-ter taak regtig op hierdie dokters se skouersrus nie.

Dit is mense wat hulle “alles” gee om hullepasiënte gemaklik, waardig en spesiaal telaat voel. Mense wat hulle eie “probleme” enselfs hulle eie “siektes of gebreke” opsy skuifsodat hulle net hulle “onbaatsugtige werk”kan verrig.

Sou jy daar tussen die pasiënte verkeer,sien jy glimlagte en vriendelike gesigte.Orals word geselsies aangekoop, menseword op hulle name genoem, niemand is net’n “nommer” nie.

Dit is heel anders as wat ek verwag het toe

ons verneem het dat my suster vir vyf wekebestraling moes ontvang. Net die gedagte al-leen van bestraling en “chemo” is kommer-wekkend, maar glo my, die atmosfeer by diehospitaal maak dit ’n nimmervresende ge-beurtenis. My suster se kanker is 100% ge-nees in hierdie vyf weke van bestraling. Hal-leluja!

Ons wil ook ons dank betuig aan die gine-koloë, dokters en personeel by Karl Bremer-hospitaal, wat so flink en spoedig opgetreehet met die ontdekking van die kanker en diemanier waarop hulle ons die “slegte nuus”meegedeel het.

Baie dankie, julle het ons so mooi gehelpen dit word regtig waardeer.

Ons wil net vir elkeen van hierdie mensesê dat hulle werk nie ongesiens verbygaannie. Daar is ongetwyfeld baie mense wat nesons voel, maar ook nie weet hoe om regtig“dankie” te sê en dié waardering uit tespreek nie.

An Epic battle for survivor

Ernst Viljoen will be paired with Elana Meyer during the Absa Cape Epic.

Local Bellville resident, Ernst Viljoen, iscurrently undergoing strict training andpreparation to ride the 2012 Absa CapeEpic in celebration of his recent success-ful recovery from prostate cancer.

This will be his fourth entry in the annualrace in the Western Cape and he will devotehis participation to those suffering from can-cer and to raise awareness and funding forCansa.

As a Team Absa rider, Absa will generous-ly donate R1 300 to the organisation for everystage of the race that Viljoen completes – apotential total of R9 100 for his efforts.

“Thankfully, the disease was diagnosed atan early stage and I was able to beat the can-cer,” says Viljoen. “I am extremely thankfulthat I can get back on my bike and ride again,and enjoy the sport which I have been doingfor most of my life. It is not something I takefor granted.”

Viljoen has been active in the sport of cy-cling for the past 44 years and made a seriousconversion to mountain biking in 2006, whenAbsa – his then employer – became the titlesponsor of the Absa Cape Epic.

He has since retired from his banking ca-reer of 28 years and is currently a lecturerin financial management at a private collegein Cape Town.

Viljoen has also completed the Bike Trans-Alp in 2007 and has 20 Cape Argus Pick n PayCycle Tour rides to his name so far.

Diagnosed with prostate cancer in Decem-ber 2010, Viljoen opted for a brachytherapy– the implanting of radioactive seeds into theprostate – instead of surgically removing thegland. The procedure was scheduled for

April 2011 allowing him to attend his son’swedding and complete the 2011 Absa CapeEpic in March 2011.

Viljoen is now recovered from the diseaseand looking ahead to the 2012 instalment ofthe world’s toughest mountain bike stagerace. This year Viljoen will be paired with

Team Absa partner and Olympic silver med-allist, Elana Meyer.

Viljoen will also serve as manager forTeam Absa. The team includes rugby legendJoel Stransky and model Vanessa Haywood.

The Absa Cape Epic will take place from25 March to 1 April 2012.

Bing takes title in all­action SUP seriesA record number of entries marked thefourth Coreban Summer Series for Stand UpPaddlers (SUP), held at Bloubergstrand re-cently.

The three days of competition in the surfslalom, wave riding and long distance racingresulted in non-stop action.

This year’s event saw the largest field ofSUP entrants in Africa with over 100 en-trants ranging from seven-year-old CameronTripney in the children’s division to novicemen and women divisions, the highly con-

tested junior division, legends (over 45) andopen men and women divisions.

The contest was held in three days of per-fect weather starting with the slalom event.A rise in swell on the second day saw organ-isers make the call for wave riding.

The thirdand final daywasquite easily themost action-packed SUP day Africa has everseen.

With the wind subsiding paddlers had toprepare for the 7,5km distance racingaround the islands at Big Bay.

With long distance out of the way, it wastime for the surf slalom finals, once againthrough the larger surf. Chris Bertish, deter-mined to make up for his earlier mistake,took top line honours.

Justin Bing snuck in a few extra moveswinning the wave riding discipline.

In the end it was Justin Bing who walkedaway with the 2011 Men’s Open title whileKarina Figl, who showed top form in allthree disciplines, finished first overall in theLadies’ Open division.

Justin Bing won the 2011 Coreban Stand Up Paddling Summer Series that was held at BigBay in December.
