“Die polisie het opgedaag en hom wegge-neem,” sê Zona.

Toe die egpaar hul verklarings afgelê heten Charl die volgende dag polisie toe is, kryhy ’n skok.

“Die man word glo al hoe lank deur diepolisie gesoek, het hulle vir my gesê. Hy isuit op borgtog, en het ’n hele paar ander kri-minele sake teen hom.”

Charl sê dit was al die hoeveelste keer datdaar by hulle ingebreek is. Daar is selfskringtelevisie van ’n buurman wat wys die-selfde man was reeds vantevore in Charl seerf, sê hy.

Sy dogter is ook voorheen met ’n mes bin-ne-in die huis gedreig.

“Maar dit was voor Abby se tyd,” sê Zona.“As die nie vir Abby was nie...”

Zona sê hul vierpotige heldin is tot Sater-dag nog met lekkernye deur die hele buurtbederf.

“Wat vir ons so treffend is uit die hele er-varing, is hoe die buurt soos een man opge-staan het in ’n tyd van nood.

“Die gemeenskap het besluit genoeg is ge-noeg.” Charl sê die Boston-buurtwag wordtans weer op die been gebring.

The City of Cape Town’s mayoral com-mittee member for safety and security,JP Smith, has warned people against

using taxis that are loitering around nightclubs as they are often unlicensed.

“I’m urging people to use taxis that theyhail themselves. By so doing it will be easyto trace when something happens and theywill have something to fall back on in caseof danger,” he says.

Smith added that as much as someonewouldn’t get into a stranger’s car, the sameconcept should apply for these unknownmetered taxis waiting for customers out-side. “Most of these taxis are operating out-side the law. They don’t have operating li-

cences and we are urging people to use reg-istered taxis. We have been impoundingtaxis in the past week that are operatingwithout licences to ensure safety,” he said.

Smith was commenting following an inci-dent where Sanet de Lange (18), who livesin Welgelegen, was attacked inside a taxishe took after a night out at Tiger TigerNight Club in Claremont with friends lastweek.

It is alleged she took a taxi that was wait-ing outside the club. When she climbed intothe taxi, she realised she didn’t have moneyand told the driver she would pay when shearrivedhome.That’swhen theybeganquar-relling and she became afraid. When thetaxi stopped, she tried to jump out, but theoccupants allegedly beat her up.

As they drove away with her still in the

taxi, she managed to jump out and hide inthe bushes in Rondebosch. Patrolling Ron-debosch police officers spotted her and shewas rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital be-fore being transferred to Panorama Hospi-tal. She was discharged on Saturday and isrecovering at home.

Her mother, also Sanet (57), said she isglad and proud that her daughter managedto remember what she had taught her. “Ihave always taught my children to fight forthemselves. They might stab you, but thatwound will heal, but if they rape you youwill have to livewith that for the rest of yourlife. I’m happy that she managed to fight herway out, but what pains me is that after do-ing something very responsible and takinga taxi after a night out, this is what happens.I’m beside myself with anger,” she said.

Responsible giving is in focus at the uplift-ment and empowerment organisation MetroEvangelical Services (MES).

On 26 June MES Cape Town hosted theirmonthly outreach, which is held on the lastFriday of every month.

They used the event to oncemore advocatefor responsible giving.

With the monthly event, MES offers thecommunity a peek intowhat they do andhowthey’ve impacted theCapeTowncommunity.

As Ilse Els (MES manager) says, everyonewants to give, but itmust be done in a respon-sible way.

Attendees of the outreach included mem-bers of the Bellville community, differentchurch denominations and volunteers inte-rested in helping change the heart of the city,according to a MES statement.

Attendees were given a detailed historyabout the organisation before being taken tothe streets to meet with MES clients.

“The groups had tasks to do that evening.Clientswerehandedbiscuits,whichhada lit-tle message of hope from the Bible, Chomp(Christ Heals Our Many Pains) chocolatesand attendees also just shared in a little pray-er with the homeless.”

One of the attendees, one Ferdinand, toldEls the outreach had given him the chanceto rediscover himself and shown him howmuchMES’s clients “really appreciate the lo-ve thatwas shown to themon that night”, Elssaid.

The next monthly outreach will be hostedon 31 July in the Bellville PresbyterianChurchHall at 19:00 and the entire communi-ty is welcome.

‘Give responsibly’, urges MES

Four teenagers from the gang- and cri-me-ridden Wesbank recently taught agroup of foreign students origami, the

Japanese art of folding paper into interes-ting shapes.

The four students, Ayanda Mpikwa, Od-wa Mbombo, Siyasanga Pike and ZenitaNjani, were taught how to make beautifulcreations out of paper by their origami in-structor, Kyoko Morgan.

Kyoko often teaches children – mostlyteenagers – inunderprivilegedareas. She’scurrently teaching origami in Wesbankand at St James Primary School in theSouth Peninsula.

Kyoko, founder and director of Origamifor Africa, an NGO, moved to South Africa23 years ago. Her parents taught her the artof origami and she’s now “paying it for-ward” by teaching youngsters.

She wishes to instil the discipline andconcentration she was taught to the selec-ted teenagers from impoverished areas.

Ayanda, Odwa, Siyasanga and Zenia we-re given the opportunity on Thursday lastweek to show a group of teenagers, all fo-reign students at the Eurocentres Langua-ge LearningWorldwide Institution in LongStreet, how to carefully fold pieces of paperinto different shapes.

The workshop of about two hours washeld at the Iziko Museum in the CompanyGardens in the city centre.

“Apart from Zenita, they are high schoolstudents. Odwa and Siyasanga were myfirst students in 2012 at Wesbank No. 1 Pri-mary,” Kyoko says.

“When I picked them up at their homes,their families waved them goodbye as if

they were going on a long journey.”She says that formanyof the students she

teaches in Wesbank, a trip to the city or amuseum is regarded as really special.

“Theynever have the opportunity to visitsuch places, either because they do nothave transport or their parents cannot af-ford it,” she explains.

Kyoko also teaches children at the near-by Wesbank No. 1 Primary School duringthe school holidays. She also previouslytaught awaiting trial inmates at the Polls-moor correctional facility in Tokai.

“From their reactions I realised that ori-gami actually helps to empower children;it gives them confidence,” she said in an in-terview recently.

Kyoko’s dream is to take the art of origa-mi to as many townships across the CapePeninsula as possible.

“It is good for all – it helps you physically,mentally and intellectually,” Kyoko says.

Die gemeenskappe van Bellville en Dur-banville het ’n groep ridders se pogingom winter vir armes beter te maak,

met ’n dawerende: “Ons gee om!” beant-woord.

Dít verwys natuurlik na die jaarlikse Win-ter Knights-projek van die Bellvillese Tafel-ronde 65 en sy Durbanvillese 156-eweknie.

Dié gesamentlike groep het ’n groot aantalskenkings van komberse, klere, slaapsakke,nie-bederfbare kos en ander noodsaaklikewinterware ingesamel tydens hul jongsteprojek.

Die ridders het, soos beloof, op Vrydag 10Julie by die Hollow Tree-restaurant in OldOakweg, Bellville, byeengekom, geklee inniks meer as ’n T-hemp en jeans nie.

Die doel hiervan was om hul solidariteitmet minderbevoorregtes te wys wat diesnerpende koue soms met nét die klere aanhul lyf moet trotseer.

Corné Burger, sameroeper van die projeken gebiedsvoorsitter van Tafelronde Weste-like Provinsie, het teen 17:00 met TygerBur-ger se besoek gesê die ware op die foto hier-

Die lede van die twee gasheerklubs het ge-sê alles wat ingesamel is, sal onder behoefti-ges inDurbanville, Bellville enKraaifonteinversprei word.

“Ons sal alles na die klubhuis (langs dieHoërskool D.F. Malan) neem en daar in kate-gorieë van mans-, vroue- en kinderkleregaan uitsorteer, en die blikkieskos en anderitems uitsorteer,” het Corné gesê.

Hy sê een van die begunstigdes van dieprojek is die TygerbergAssociation of StreetPeople (TASP) in die Bellville-middestad.

Hierdie is egter nie die ridders se enigstegroot projek nie. “Ons ander groot projek isons jaarlikse Kers-ete,” het hy gesê.

Three hijackings took place in Parow sincethe beginning of July.

This is according toColonelGertNel, sta-tion commander of the Parow police.

On 7July, around 17:00, aWelgelegenmo-torist was assaulted by four carjackers inhis driveway who then took off with hisnew BMW. According to Nel the attackers,three men and a woman, were driving ina similar, unmarked silver BMW.

“The victimwashitwith a firearmonhisforehead. He is in hospital and had to recei-ve reconstructive surgery.His eyewas alsodamaged,” Nel says.

He says the incident is not connected toa carjacking in Bothasig earlier in themonth, where the suspects also drove aBMW. “That was a much older model.”

On 9 July three men and a woman targe-ted a lawyer andher three clientswhoweresitting in her white Corolla in a parkingbay at Capitec in Parow.

“One suspect tried to grab the car’s keysfrom the ignition through the window, andin the process pulled the owner from hercar. The passengers were then also thrownout and the four took off with the vehicle.

“There were no weapons involved and itseems thiswasmorea transport opportuni-ty than a planned hijacking,” Nel saysabout the incident that happened at 16:20.

Nel says circumstances around the thirdhijacking are not very clear. “The complai-nant says he was asked for jumper cableson theGielBassonbridgeonenight at 01:00.In the process his Opel Corsa was stolen.”

The little gem of a community theatre inBellville that had its doors closed for reno-vations, is finally opening the curtainsagain.It’s not called the “BAT” anymore, but

now rather, the “CAT”.The former Bellville Amateur Theatre

(BAT) is reopening with a play by AndréP Brink, after months of loving care wasinvested in her restoration by the new Ci-ty appointed manager, Gavin Wright.He says the theatre has been renamed

the Collective Arts Theatre (CAT).TygerBurger visited the theatre in

April. Even through the film of dust andlitter at the time, the potential and elegan-ce of the little theatre shone right throughthe construction debris.Gavin incorporated various recycled

elements into the restoration, including achandelier that graces the main theatrehall.“Aftermonths ofworking on the theatre

we are ready to open. The show called DieTrommel is an Afrikaans play written byBrink and directed by Adriaan de Vil-liers,” he said.The show starts at 20:00 tonight (Wed-

It’s so unreliable anddangerous, every day there’sfighting going on between taxisand buses and even whenputting yourself out to enjoy aday trip, you have to stress allthe time about boarding andexiting numerous times as nobus or taxi takes you from A-Zin one go. Most of the time youhave to walk yourself into afrenzy anyway. People pushand shove, getting robbed orthrown off in the process. Howmany times have I not experi-enced first hand buses movingwhilst people are still boar-ding, getting hurt in theprocess?And then to close my argu-

ment, it seems certain placeshave the pick of the cropregarding transport whilstothers are sparse and farbetween.

I took my daughter to see theDisney on Ice show at theGrandwest casino. I thought itwas a great show last year, sodecided to spend the money andbuy tickets once again. Theshow was amazing but I wasshocked beyond belief at theprices of the items on sale. Ihave no problem spendingmoney and treating my kids,but it was an absolute rip off tobe charged that extremeamount of money for items.The popcorn that was for sale

was in a blue plastic bag andwas selling for ... hold yourbreath ... R90 each – I told thegentlemen that I did not wantto buy the whole machine.Then over to the candyfloss,

well that again was R90 each,so I decided to leave it andmaybe buy us a drink. Wellthere goes that idea, the SlushPuppies in a plastic cup (whichwas very beautiful) was sellingfor R90 each.So to buy your kids three

items, of which the Slush was250ml came to R270 + the costof the cheapest ticket at R170 =R440. This was for one child fora show that was 45 mins firsthalf and 30 mins second half –and they say perfect childrenentertainment for the schoolholiday – Yes good entertain-ment but a total rip off!I feel these prices are totally

unacceptable and was wonde-ring if this was school holidayentertainment or a get richquick idea from the casino.All in all I am still shocked

at these prices and will certain-ly do my utmost to ensure thatpeople are aware of this beforethey buy tickets for next year’sshow.Just as a matter of interest I

Volgens inwoners van Shirleypark inBellville word ’n vrou in La Valle-straat gereeld aangerand en word

daar glo by dié huis dwelms misbruik.Volgens een van dié inwoners (in ’n ge-

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(i) van die Wet op Plaaslike Regering: Munisipale Eiendomsbelasting, Wet 6 of 2004, hierna die “Wet” genoem, worddaar hiermee kennis gegee dat die sewende aanvullende waardasielys (SV07) van die 2012- algemene waardasielys vir die 2015/16-boekjaarvanaf 21 Julie 2015 tot 31 Augstus 2015 vir die publiek by die lokale hieronder ter insae lê. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by hierdielokale beskikbaar. Die waardasielys is ook vanaf 21 Julie 2015 op die Raad se webwerf beskikbaar (adres hieronder).

Eiendomme word ingevolge artikel 78(1) van die Wet op die sewende aanvullende waardasielys (SV07) van die 2012- algemene waardasielysgeplaas indien dit: a) foutiewelik uit die waardasielys gelaat is; b) na die laaste algemene waardasie by die munisipaliteit ingesluit is; c) na dielaaste algemene waardasie onderverdeel of gekonsolideer is; d) ’n wesenlike toename of vermindering in markwaarde ondergaan het sedertdie laaste algemene waardasie; e) in die laaste algemene waardasie aansienlik verkeerd gewaardeer is; f) om enige ander buitengewone redeherwaardeer moet word; g) waarvan die kategorie verander het.

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar bydie munisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte vaneiendomme wat op die SV07-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV07-waardasies inkennis gestel word by die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is.

Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ’n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ’n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verbandmoet hou en nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by die lokalehieronder genoem beskikbaar en kan van die webwerf afgelaai word. ’n Afsonderlike beswaarvorm moet vir elke eiendom ingevul word.

family experience on theirhistorical proper-ty.For this reason, fifth-generation owner

MJ de Wit and wife, Estani, dedicated theirtime to realising this dream after they tookover management of thefarm and winery in 2010.“We’ve been dreaming

about this project for yearsand to finally see it all cometogether, makes one believethat miracles do happen,”MJ said.Last Wednesday the fami-

ly fired their 300-year-oldcannon to underscore theirreadiness to operate as a ful-ly functional hospitality,tourist and family venue.Selected guests were in-

troduced to their signaturewines and handcrafted beerrange (Hoogeberg CraftBeer), and offered (several)tastes of their authenticDurbanville hospitality.They produce about 6 500

cases of wine a year andtheir first wine under the Signal Gun labelwas made by MJ in 2006 as a hobby.The farm has its own restaurant, Ke-Mo-

Natural talent, commitment and excel-lent performances during the recent pro-vincial cricket trial matches did not gounnoticed, with both Matthew Valentineand Angelo Yiatses receiving deservedWestern Province u-17 cricket selection.District North proudly recorded its

highest ever amount of senior youthplay-er representation at provincial level withfour representatives in theu-17 age-groupand a further three representatives in theu-19 age-group, with Chesterhouse beingthe only high school in the northern sub-urbs receiving multiple representation.Over the past few seasons Chester-

house has become a formidable force in

cricket, progressing to a top four finishin the WPNS u-19A cricket league for thesecond season in a row, and the only highschool to have reached the semi-finals inboth the league and T30 knockout compe-titions for the 2015 season. What makesit so remarkable is that Chesterhouse asan academic institution with a numbersratio of around 10-15% compared to larg-er traditional sporting schools of thenorth, is able tomeasureupwith such im-pressive cricket results. Chesterhouseplaces emphasis on sport organisationand enjoyment, coaching passion and anabsolute belief and dependence on eachother within a team sport framework.

of sport and recreation, says: “In develop-ing a winning nation it is important to im-prove international sports successes bysupporting events at all levels.“Achieving an active and winning na-

tion is underpinned by an enabling envi-ronment.“The staging of this event at the Cape

Sun is part of our campaign to bring bigsport events to the Western Cape.”South Africa’s first ever grandmaster,

KennySolomon,markedhis return to com-petition on South African soil, which wasalso his first tournament onhome soil afterofficially receiving the title of grandmasterearlier this year.Solomon, originally from Mitchell’s

Plain and a previous winner of the tourna-ment, placed fourth in this year’s tourna-ment with a score of 8.5.“It was a tough tournament with a lot of

strong players. I am happy that we wereable to have four grandmasters participat-ing this year,” he says.“It is important that foreign grandmas-

ters participate in South African chessevents – this is how chess can grow in ourcountry.”The tournament also incorporated the

SA schools individual chess champion-ship. The championship saw some of thebest junior players in the country come upagainst each other.Former national junior team coach Cal-

vin Klaasen believes young players havean opportunity to make a career of thegame if the support shown at the SA Opencontinues to grow.

“It’s important foryoung players to identifywith heroes, to havesomething to strive for.“There are limited op-

portunities for youngplayers in SouthAfrica toprogress to a professionallevel at the moment, butthat can change if we aresupported correctly. Ken-ny’s grandmaster title isjust step one in South Af-rica becoming a powerfulchess country,” he says.Solomon, who now

lives in Italy, believesevents of this nature needto happen more often ifwe are to produce moreinternational-grade play-ers.“Chess events like these help people

build connections as we were there com-peting for over a week, so apart from theplaying there is also thepost-gameanalysisand it’s in these sessions where chess play-ers can take the opportunity to learn evenmore,” he says.English chess legend grandmaster Nigel

Short emerged victorious at the end of the11-round event. He gained the title basedon a tie-break system, after ending on ninepoints alongside grandmaster AleksaStrikovic from Serbia and India’s grand-master Abhijit Kunte.Short has been playing with the best

since he became a grandmaster at age 19.He was regularly placed in the top ten inthe world between the late 1980s and late1990s.He became the first English player to

play for the World Chess Championship ti-tlewhenheplayed againstGarryKasparovin 1993.Solomon will next travel to Gauteng

along with Short to play in a qualifier forone of the biggest chess tournaments in theworld taking place in Las Vegas.

The inaugural Cape Town Cup will setthe Mother City alight with two inter-national teams set to challenge two PSL

teams in a two day double header football ex-travaganza.

The City of Cape Town has announced thatthe Cape Town Cup soccer tournament willsee host team Ajax Cape Town welcome Por-tuguese team Sporting Club de Portugal aswell as Crystal Palace FC and SuperSportUnited at the Cape Town Stadium on 24 and26 July.

The first game on Friday, which kicks offat 17:45, will see SuperSport United FC tak-ing on Crystal Palace.

Following shortly after this at 20:15 willsee Ajax Cape Town and Sporting go headto head. Sunday’s action will start at 13:00with the losers of Friday’s double headerschallenging each other. The final, at 15:30,will be contested between the winners of thegames played on Friday. There will be a pen-alty shoot-out to decide the champion,should there be a tie after regulation time.

Ari Efstathiou, Ajax Cape Town CEO saysAjax Cape Town is privileged to host Sport-ing, Crystal Palace and SuperSport Unitedfor the inaugural Cape Town Cup.

“As a club, we continue to be leaders inthe football industry and hosting clubs ofthis calibre is a start of a great future for theCape Town Cup,” he said.

“Together with the City, we hope to growthis tournament in the future and host otherbig name football clubs in Cape Town. Weask for the support of the community to

make this event a hugely successful one, aswe look to continue doing our share in main-taining the status and reputation that CapeTown has enjoyed as one of the most lovedcities in the world.

“We will most certainly look to keep devel-oping and escalating the Cape Town Cup,with the aim of turning it into a world re-nowned football spectacle.’’

Tickets cost between R200 to R400 andAjax Cape Town hopes thousands of fanswill rock up for the games.
