Hy sê Prasa Cres, wat verant-woordelik is vir fasiliteitsbestuurvan die stasies, het die kwessie vandie agterstallige rekenings met dieStad Kaapstad opgeneem.

“Ons het reëlings getref met dieStad om die elektrisiteit by die sta-sies wat deur die laat betalings ge-raak is, weer aan te sluit.”

Sekuritiet is ook by dié stasiesverbeter.

Matya het verskoning gevra aankliënte wat tydens die kragonder-brekings ongerief moes verduur.“Ons sal betalings monitor om ’nherhaling van dié voorval te ver-my,” het hy gesê. Personeelont-plooiing by die Tygerberg-stasie salook hersien word.

Volgens Shelley Finch,wat namens ’n paar inwoners gepraat het, is“die stank van die verrotte vullis en menslikeafval so erg dat inwoners naby dié eiendom niemeer hulle vensters kan oopmaak nie”. TygerBurger het by Clive Justus, sub-raadvoorsitter, en raadslid Leonore van derWalt aangeklop, wat beide hul ontsteltenisoor die toestand van die erwe uitgespreekhet. Nadat Van der Walt van die Bedford-straat-probleme verneem het, het sy selfgaan ondersoek instel. “Ek het baie empatiemet die inwoners se ontevredenheid oor dietoestand van die erf. Ek het op die erf rond-geloop en verstaan hoekom hulle so onge-lukkig is.” Sy het amptenare van die Stadversoek om so gou moontlik die eienaar tevind, sodat dié beveel kan word om binne21 dae die terrein op te ruim.

Justus het dieselfde versoeke ingesit,maar ook gevra dat die gebied omheinword. Hy het voorgestel dat die gebied ver-koop word, met die oog op behuisingsont-wikkeling.

Nadat Justus en Van der Walt oral na-vraag gedoen het, is uiteindelik vasgesteldat die grond volgens Aldré de Goede vaneiendomsbestuur van die Stad, aan die“Educational Trustees” behoort. Dit het singemaak, omdat die aangrensende HernusKriel-tehuis vir bejaardes in ’n ou skoolge-

bou is. Die vuil erwe was aanvanklik deel vandié skoolterrein.

Dit het die kwessie na die Wes-Kaapse on-derwysdepartement geneem. Hier het PaddyAttwell, kommunikasiedirekteur, gesê hulleweet nie wie die “Educational Trustees” is enof hulle nog vir die eiendom verantwoordelikis nie. “Die dokument verwys nie na die Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement nie.”

Volgens hom is dit standaardprosedure omeiendom van dié departement wat nie langervir ’n skool gebruik word nie, aan openbarewerke te oorhandig.

Dit het TygerBurger by Shane Hindley, me-diaskakelbeamptevandieWes-Kaapsedepar-tement van vervoer en openbare werke, laatbeland. Hy het bevestig die grond behoort aanEducational Trustees. Hy het verduidelik datEducational Trustees afgeskaf en alle batesvan dié trustees aan die staat oorgedra is.

Net een van die vier erwe is egter aan diestaat oorgedra. Die ander drie erwe van dieverwaarloosde gebied, se lot moet nog beslisword, het Hindley gesê.

Aangesien die een erf reeds die nasionaleregering s’n is, sal dieselfde met die anderdrie gebeur. Hy sê al het die drie erwe nognie eintlik ’n eienaar nie, “het die departe-ment van vervoer en openbare werke voort-gegaan om dié eiendom te onderhou”. Hy sêdié departement sal versoek word om dieeiendom te evalueer met die doel om die graste sny en die rommel te verwyder.

Complaint ‘was perjury’Parow police arrested a 33-year-old man forperjury, after he opened a false complaintSaturday (11 February) morning, WesternCape police liaison W/O November Filan-der, said in a media release.

“According to the complainant at approxi-mately 07:00, he was busy unlocking the doorof a motor dealership in Voortrekker Road,Parow where he was working, when twoarmed men cornered him. They then robbedhim of an undisclosed sum of cash, and fled

on foot in an unknown direction.“With further police investigation and the

examination of the video footage at his work,it was later established that the complainantin actual fact staged the whole incident,” Fi-lander said. The video footage showed howthe complainant himself took and hid themoney.

“The suspect was then charged for perjuryand will appeared in the Parow Magistrate’sCourt on Monday 13 February.

Unusual for a ‘cat woman’MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Swift action by concerned residents ofChurchill Estate in Parow resulted in thecapture and arrest of a seemingly “inno-cent” burglar, dubbed “cat woman” earlySaturday morning (4 February). Her lootof bottles of cash and various keys, wasalso found with her.

The Parow West Neighbourhood Watchhas been punting an awareness campaign inthe area to be on the lookout for suspiciousactivity, to report it immediately and not todiscount anything, Muneeb Hendricks, vicechairman of the Parow Watch, said.

This paid off on Saturday morning, whena resident of Kriege Street observed an un-known female inside her neighbour’s house.She knew that her neighbours were not athome.

She immediately went to their house to in-vestigate. When the suspect, an elderly blackfemale, saw that she was being challenged,

she apparently jumped over the wall into an-other neighbour’s property with the agilityof a young cat.

“The resident then called for help and allsurrounding residents joined in the pursuitand apprehended the suspect on the cornersof Wrench and 5th Avenue,” Hendricks ex-plained.

The police were called to the scene.“On closer investigation it was found that

the suspect had allegedly entered the houseby removing a rear window using a screw-driver. A search of her bag revealed cash, aswell as a bag of keys,” Hendricks said.

“It was a total shocker for the residentsas who would have suspected an ‘old Africanmamma’ as being a cat burglar, equippedwith keys and screwdriver, he said.

According to Lt Kevin J Williams, spokes-person for the Parow police, a case of house-breaking and theft was opened against No-luthando Jelashe of New Crossroads. Shehas already appeared in court and the casewas postponed until 16 April.

Noluthando Jelashe, aka ‘cat woman’, shortlyafter she was caught by the Parow Watch. Sheallegedly broke into a Kriege Street residence,stealing cash.

Ronel Fourie, lewensoriëntering-onder-wyser en skoolsielkundige by die skool, ver-tel dat die skool as deel van die dwelmbe-wustheidsprogram nou saamwerk met die

polisie, veral met die honde-eenheid. Saammet die polisie sal inligtingsessies en -aande– vir onderskeidelik leerlinge en ouers – ookgereël word.

“Ons wil die boodskap na die gemeenskapuitstuur dat Hoërskool Tygerberg vir ’n vei-lige, dwelmvrye omgewing staan waar leer-ders hulle volle potensiaal kan ontwikkel,”het Ronel verduidelik.

Die bewustheidsprogram het reeds in 2011afgeskop. Toe is daar ook gereeld snuffelhon-de gekry om die skool vir dwelms te deur-soek. Tot dusver is geen dwelms nog gevindnie.

Ek het ’n paar voorstelle vir diejong mens in 2012:

. Leef voluit. Daar is nie ’n kristal-bal om in die toekoms te sien nie. Dithelp nie jy leef in bekommernis oordie toekoms en vergeet om vandag teleef nie. Aan jou is net hierdie eenlewe geskenk. Daar is ’n spreek-woord wat sê dat hierdie lewe nie ’nkleedrepetisie is nie, maar die leweself is. Leef voluit, doen voluit, weeslief met jou hele hart. Leef jou be-langstelling en talente uit na die bes-te van jou vermoë.

. Besef hierdie is nou jou tyd omjonk te wees. Gryp die geleenthedevan die jeug aan. Die dae van ’n mensse lewe hardloop vinnig onder jouuit. Tyd vlieg: een van die dae is jymiddeljarig en kort voor lank sit jy

’n Egpaar van Parow het ’n slimprojek begin om geld in te samelvir elektriese toestelle wat voor-aan gewone rolstoele knip en sodie gebruiker baie meer mobielmaak.

Chris en Sandra Swanepoel seprojek, Donuts 4 Wheels, begin op1 Maart en loop op 27 April, Vry-heidsdag, ten einde. Op dié dag wilhulle graag reeds die toestelle aandie gelukkige rolstoelgebruikersoorhandig.

Sandra sê die elektriese toestel,ook Firefly genoem, knip vooraanstandaardrolstoele vas. Mensemoet nog hul arms/hande kan ge-bruik om die aankniptoestel te kangebruik.

Met die toestel, kan die gebruikervorentoe en agtertoe in die rolstoelbeweeg, teen tot 10 km/h. Die batte-ry hou vir 24 km voor dit weer ge-laai moet word en trek 130 kg.

Omdat dit baie maklik aan- en af-knip, kan dit los in ’n motor gelaaiword. (Om te sien hoe dit werk, kyk

Hiermee beoog hulleom genoeg geld in te samel om virsoveel rolstoelgebruikers moontlikeen van hierdie elektriese aanknip-toestelle te gee.

Hoewel hulle die projek nou eersin hulle omgewing wil doen, was ditná ’n onderhoud van Sandra opRSG, duidelik dat die hele land wilhelp, vertel sy. “Ons gaan kandida-te vir die aanknip-toestel deur diemedia en LEAD SA werf. Gebrui-kers sal niks hiervoor hoef te betaalnie,” het sy gesê. Hulle betaal selfdie aanvangskoste, maar sal blywees as ’n drukonderneming plak-kate en T-hemde kan druk met dieDonuts 4 Wheels-logo daarop.

In die sentrum word die publiek genaderom ’n blikkie kos daar en dan te koop en dante skenk. ’n Lekker prys kan ook deur ’n ge-lukkige blikkieskenker gewen word. Diéprys word deur die Parow-sentrum verskaf.

Na die weeklange projek, word die blik-kieskos deur die dienssentrum in kospak-kies opgemaak en aan behoeftige bejaardesin die omgewing uitgegee.

Linda Louw, bestuurder van die dienssen-trum, het die Parow-sentrum vir die projekbedank, asook die publiek vir hul donasiesvan blikkieskos.

“In hierdie moeilike finansiële tye waarbejaardes by die dag verarm, is so ’n kospak-kie ’n welkome en waardevolle geskenk virhulle,” het sy gesê.

Never again will parents bringing theirchildren to Cape Town for cancer treat-ment have to sleep on the streets.

The Out of Africa Children’s Foundationlaunched its second facility in Cape Town infour months – a children’s centre in New-lands which will accommodate six familieswhile ensuring that their terminally ill chil-dren receive the best pre and post-operativecare, Kim Ferroli-Highfield from Parow,founder and chief executive officer of Out ofAfrica, said.

The first hospice for terminally ill chil-dren and their parents was opened in Parowin September last year.

The Newlands hospice for children also of-fers accommodation for parents – for free –and is situated at 115 Campground Road, inclose proximity to the Red Cross Children’sHospital and Groote Schuur.

The opening event was attended by Arch-bishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and theCity’s mayoral committee member for social

and early childhood development, BeverleyCortje-Alcock, who delivered the keynote ad-dress.

At the event, Tutu said: “She (Ferroli-Highfield) is a real powerhouse; quite ex-traordinary. There are so many good peopledoing good things in our society, it’s just thatwe seldom have the opportunity to readabout them.”

Ferroli-Highfield initiated the project as aresult of her daughter who survived cancer15 years ago.

“When we were going through treatmentwe thought we were hard done by, until westarted meeting other families who had tocope not only with the trauma of their sickchildren but also with not having decentplaces to stay or food to eat. When I learnedthat a mother who had brought her child toCape Town for treatment was living undera bridge and was brutally raped one day onher way from hospital, I knew that I had todo something.”

Ask any cyclist and they will certainlybe able to confirm this over and overagain.

There is one factor specifically that iscertainly the greatest threat to bikers –motorists. Or before I generalise – somemotorists.

The Argus Cycle tour is held on 11March which means every single partici-pant is out and about on our roads, prepar-ing for the big race.

The City of Cape Town has this weekurged motorists to exercise caution andcommon sense on the roads and this issomething every motorist should take toheart.

The safety and security spokespersoncautioned that traffic officers will be fo-cusing on the behaviour of cyclists andmotorists alike and fines will be issuedwhere the law is broken.

As cyclist numbers increase this time ofyear, so do accidents involving cyclists.

Yes, it is not always the motorist that isat fault and yes, most of us have probablyhad experiences in which cyclists ingroups drove next to each other instead ofbehind each other.

Nonetheless, now is the time to be extracareful, extra patient and extra observantfor cyclists on our roads.

Ever since I moved to Parow Valley, it hasbeen a constant battle with barking dogs,thumping music coming from neighbouringhouses and cars driving past. Neighbourstalking so loud that I have no other alternati-ve but to turn the volume of my televisionset to full blast so I can’t hear the noise. I cango on and on ...

I can’t take a nap during the day or justrelax in my garden without having to stress

about noise. I can’t sleep at night, and wakeup in the morning with a throbbing heada-che. I become moody and as a result, this af-fects my relationship and my work.

I spend a fortune buying mild tranquili-sers, sleeping and anti-stress tablets, heada-che tablets, herbal teas, etc. I have to keeptaking these on a regular basis.

Is there anyone out there who is goingthrough the same agony as me? Help!

Hockeyadmin ashameAs a hockey player I write to theCity of Cape Town in absolute frus-tration and dismay about the factthat the Hartleyvale Astro field wasnot fit and available in order to hostthe SA Hockey Final against GreatBritain on Saturday 12 Februarythis year.

Sadly the game venue was alteredat the last moment due to some redtape it seems.

The hockey was played in Stellen-bosch with a small capacity forspectators away from the generalpublic access.

International hockey was lasthosted in Cape Town in 2006 andmany thousands of hockey enthusi-asts – schoolchildren, students andadult players alike were lookingforward to see this game.

Hockey is a dynamic and growingsport in SA schools and all effortsshould be made to encourage chil-dren to play sport.

There is an official lame excuseabout some red tape involved aboutguaranteeing the spectators’ safetyat Hartleyvale. An internationalgame was held at Hartleyvale Astronine days ago with allegedly some3 000 spectators.

I personally played hockey atHartleyvale Astro on Wednesdaythree days ago and there was no ap-parent danger to anyone.

City of Cape Town, I believe knewof this scheduled internationalgame about a year ago and shouldhave been prepared. This shouldhave been a showcase to demon-strate to the world how well CapeTown organises events.

The city planners have disgracedthemselves and Cape Town in frontof an international sporting bodyand have let down thousands ofhockey fans.

This is not acceptable Cape Townit is simply not good enough. It ishigh time the people responsibleare held accountable.

Bigger, better, bluesA host of local blues names will be takingover Kleinmond in March for the Big BluesMusic Festival.

Organisers are determined to offer a big-ger and better show this year, with an evenstronger line-up of SA’s most talented bluesmusicians on one stage over the weekend.

The afternoon decision to run theslalom discipline proved the rightone as the speed of the southeaster-ly picked up to about 22 knots.

A group of 29 kiteboards assem-bled at the starting line.

Among them were four previousseries winners.

Greg Thijsse, former SA champi-on and two-time series winner, Pe-ter Petersen, Colin Heckroodt andlast year’s winner Oswald Smithwere eager to get their nose out in

front early on.Thijisse was out of the blocks first

followed closely by a huge fleet be-hind him.

In crowded motocross style thecompetitors took the first cornerwithonly limited space to follow theideal line around the buoy.

The mayhem saw Petersen tangle

lines with his Airush teammateTyler Ryan.

Last year’s South African wavekiteboard champion Luke Mcillew-ee managed to get through a big lullwhere some riders got stuck andtook over first place which he man-aged to maintain until the very fin-ish.

In the second position was Thi-jsse and third Oswald Smith.

Clinton Santillan took victory inthe masters’ category. In the wom-en’s class Iva Lopes took home herfirst win after beating MareikeBrase.

Encouraging to see was the newtalent taking part. Although the 13-year-old newcomer SimoneSwanepoel did not manage to finishafter arriving late for the start, shelooked very promising.

Downwind Dash honours still up for grabsLast week’s Primi Naish Down-wind Dash was almost a carboncopy of the week before.

A group of 37 stand up paddlersand 25 surfskiers lined up at thestart hoping to make the best of the23 to 33 knots of wind.

The only difference was a littleless swell and the wind blowing abit more from the southeast. Thisallowed for an extremely smoothand fast first half of the run. Thesecond half as always, provided abit of a challenge with refraction offthe coast making or breaking com-petitors’ time and positions.

Off the beach, it was once againthe young junior, Dylan Frick, whoshowed a clear pair of heels to therest of the field but once out theback it was the experience of PeterPetersen that paid off.

Petersen connected runs and gotpast Frick until about 7km into therun when Frick passed his seniorcompetitor.

The young man made a dash tothe finish in a personal best time of48min57s with Petersen in a closesecond (49min03s) which was alsohis best time.

Last week’s winner, Ivan van Vu-uren, had to settle for third.

While the rest of the field competeon the faster 14’ boards, Greg Bert-

ish (51min15s) did well to finishedsixth on his 12’6 board as he pre-pares for the upcoming worldchampionships.

Brigette van Aswegen (57min05s)set the field alight finishing firstamong the women with the 13thbest time overall.

Sofie Rotobouille from Francewas second posting a personal besttime of 1H01min55s. She was fol-lowed by Monika Wohlgemuth(1H06min45s) also posting a best

time.Second Junior, Matthew van der

Linden had a couple of falls whichcost him a bit of time, but he stillmanaged ninth overall in 52min49s.Ethan Koopmans also posted a per-sonal best of 59min32s as third jun-ior.

In total there were 14 personalbest times set and four newcomers.

This week’s result sees Ivan vanVuuren take the overall lead with13,7 points, ahead of Dylan Frick

with 16,4 points and Chris Bertishdropped points due to other com-mitments and is sitting in thirdwith 20,8 points. We have five moreweeks racing to go, so it’s all up forgrabs!

The single surfskis were domi-nated by the more experienced over45 class with Mike Schwan handingthe race to Boris Hales of SunsetBeach.

Schwann misjudged the last waveinto the finishandwasunceremoni-

ously spilled out of his craft. Halesmade full advantage of his ill for-tune and took victory by 13 secondsin 38min40s.

The doubles fleet also had a greatbattle on the water and were relish-ing in the fine downwind condi-tions with all of them finishing un-der that magical 40 minute stand-ard.

The Cape Town Fight Leaguebears similarities with the Holly-wood movie in the sense that “any-thing goes” but fortunately it ismuch more professional.

When the sport first began ruleswere minimal, but concern from anumber of parties resulted in strict-er rules being implemented, so eventhe “anything goes” slogan is push-ing the limits.

The first Cape Fight League wasrecently held in front of 1 600 keenfans at the Bellville Velodrome.

Mixed Martial Arts, more com-monly referred to as MMA, is a com-bat sport which sees the use of amixture of martial arts techniques.

Its origins can apparently betraced as far back as 648BC to theGreek Olympic Games.

It is also one of the fastest grow-ing sports in the world.

On Saturday, 4 February, the au-dience was able to see for them-selves what the difference is be-tween a rear naked choke and a tri-angle choke.

They looked on through a cage as

first the dancers got the show on theroad, then local favourite Ferdi-nand Rabie introduced the fightersand finally the chokes, kicks andpunches commenced.

Renshaw Boltman, a fighter him-self,was just a face in the crowd thatnight, but he says that fighting hasgiven him discipline and controland keeps him fit.

Another audience member,Caryn Styles, says there is definite-ly a demand for MMA.

“I love the excitement and thebuzz!” she exclaims.

Cape Fighting League co-found-er, Anthony Kettle, agrees withStyles.

“There is definitely abig demand.Gary Barrett and I are trying to cre-ate a platform for fighters, just likethey have in Durban and Johannes-burg,” he explains before elaborat-ing, “One can be an amateur or a

professional, but you must get intoa gym and first learn things such asthe stand art, ground art and takedowns.”

A fighting enthusiast from Bull-dogs Moitai Gym, Marisa Roman,said that she was very excited forthe up coming fights. “I’ve beentraining to fight for nine monthsnow so it’s great to see what it’s allabout.

“Once the bug bites, it’s addic-tive,” she said.

Nobel De Castrol said: “ I am ex-cited to see some good fights to-night, it should be interesting. I amsure it’s going to be good but mostof all I am looking forward to seesome people go down.”

And down they went!Kettle says they have already

made preliminary plans for thenext event on 10 May.

In Kuilsrivier het ClintonDyason (37) nie die nodige on-dersteuning van sy spanmaatsgekry nie sodat die Kuile se lae-rige 136 lopies Strandfontein diemaklike taak gelaat het om dieverlangde 99 lopies aan te teken.
