More than a decade after the 2.3 kmSandown Link Road was conceptual-ised and one year after construction

started, it is now a race against time to com-plete it before 17:00 on 18 September.

Bad weather and the national labourstrike are teasing desperate commuters andeager developers.

The official opening will go ahead on 18

September, with various high profile guestsset to attend the ceremony, but there is avery real chance that the road will not becompleted.

Not open“The completion of the road is imminent,

but there is a strong probability that it willnot open to the public on the 18th,” says oneof the developers, Aska Property Group’sTony Clarke.

“If we had good weather from now to the

18th and no labour problems then we wouldhave a chance. It is completely out of ourcontrol. We need 10 clear days of weatherand labour to surface the road.”

The construction cost of the section fromthe R27 (West Coast Road) to the M12/N7 isR82 million, but the eventual benefit of theroad is invaluable.

Traffic along Koeberg and Blaauwbergroads has reached absurd proportions, espe-cially with these routes being upgraded allthe time, in the name of development.

Most commuters have mastered the art ofpatience, but now with Sandown Road near-ly done the light at the end of the tunnelseems to be beckoning.

People from the northern suburbs whowant to go to the coast andavoidBlaauwbergRoad, the major roleplayers (Milnerton Es-tates, Garden Cities and the Aska PropertyGroup) and in particular Parklands andSunningdale residents are counting thedaysto completion.

The new extension will open up traffic tothe M12 and N7 and includes a road-over-rail bridge and ancillary undergroundservices.Clarke continues: “When one looks at a

road that is all road infrastructure, but oneof the services that go beneath the road iswater. Ancillary services therefore in-clude an enormous new water main thatruns underneath the road. It’s a 900 mm indiameter pipe that now feeds the area withfresh water.”The SandownRoad extension contract of

R64 million has been complemented by theextension of Parklands Main Road, as wellas the construction of the Potsdam/N7 In-terchange in 2007 and theM12/bridge over

Diep River in 2011.Various roleplayers that included the

provincial government and the City ofCape Town all pulled together to maketravelling from A to B as easy as ABC.On 18 September, Premier Helen Zille

will unveil the plaque and then MyCiTibuses will take the guests on a tour of thenew road and bridge. It is also pencilled inthat the Traffic Department will open theroad to traffic at 17:00.Now it’s up to the weather and labour to

play along.

The new MyCiTi routes, stations, walkingand cycling facilities are to open in theTableView area at 14:00 on Sunday 8 Septemberand the public is invited.All MyCiTi passengers are urged to take

note of the newbus routes and stop locationsbefore they travel towork, school or any oth-er activities next Monday morning.The launch of the new routes has become

possible because the City of Cape Town andthe companies that operate the buses recent-ly signed 12-year contracts, which ensuresthe sustainability of the MyCiTi service.

Brett Herron, mayoral committee mem-ber: transport, said the signing of the 12-yearcontract was a “watershed” agreementwhich paved the way for the future expan-sion of the MyCiTi service.Changes to be implemented on Sunday, 8

September are: the current F14, F15 and F16routes will be replaced by four new routes;the main route to and from Civic Centre(T01) will continue along Blaauwberg Roadto Wood station and stop at Table View sta-tion, then the newGrey, Janssens andWoodstations; Wood station will become a new

transfer point for passengers travellingalong route 215 via Gie Road and route 216along Wood Drive (both of these routes willend at Wood station, where passengers cantransfer to T01 along Blaauwberg Road toTable View station, and on to the Civic Cen-tre); some buses on route T01 will continueto the V&A Waterfront between 05:30 and09:00, and from the V&AWaterfront toWoodstation between 15:45 and 18:15; two newparking areas will open at the intersectionof BlaauwbergRoad andWoodDrive for pas-sengers travelling to Wood station by car.

According to an anonymous member of aResidents’ Monitoring Committee (RMC),thousands of litres of leachate might havecontaminated Diep River since 1 July.However, theDepartment ofWaterAffairs

and Forestry (DWAF) categorically deniesthis claim.The RMC member told TygerBurger that

a contractor who has been removing the lea-chate from the site for the last 15 yearsstopped working on site at the end of June.Leachate is liquid that extracts solutes

from other matter as it passes through it. Inan environmental sense, leachatemost com-monly refers to water acquiring propertiesfrom the refuse that it contacts.In other words, it is produced when water

comes into contact with waste, particularlyhousehold waste, in a landfill.The RMC member elaborates: “On aver-

age the contractor would supply three 30 000litre tankers daily to transport the leachateoff the site and these vehicles would averagefour to five loads each day of the week.”At the time of contacting TygerBurger on

23 August, the RMC member said that au-thoritieshave still not assignedanyextrave-

hicles to remove the leachate.He adds: “According to my calculations,

from1Julyup till date (23August),wewouldhave transported in excess of 16 million li-tres of leachate offsite to treatment facilities.

What has happened to this excess? Howmuch has run into the stormwater andhence into the Diep River?”On 22 July the contractor apparently saw

a leachate pond overflowing into the stormcollection dam, which eventually runs intoDiep River.DWAF poured cold water on the RMC

member’s claimwhen they stated that leach-ate did overflow into the stormwater pond,but that the stormwater pond is designed toreceive the overflow in the event of an emer-gency.There was apparently a lot of water that

the pond had to accommodate on the day ofthe incident andno leachate escaped into theenvironment.Insofar as the possibility of leachate pol-

luting Diep River, DWAF assures the publicthat the City of Cape Townhas putmeasuresin place to address the management of theleachate dams.DWAF investigated the situation in Viss-

ershokwhen they received the complaint on15 August and inspected the site again yes-terday.They concluded by stating that the only

concern they hadwas that a contractor to re-move the leachate wasn’t appointed time-ously by the City of Cape Town.

Once water comes into contact with waste itis known as leachate. It is claimed thatthousands of litres of leachate might havecontaminated Diep River since July, but theDepartment of Water Affairs and Forestrydenies this.

A 34-year-old man from Melkbosstrandwas arrested for fraud by Milnerton’s De-tective Unit after it was discovered that hewas supposedly involved in stealing de-posits from at least five complainants.

The well-dressed man would apparentlypromise his victims that he will providealuminium window frames if a deposit ispaid to him.

His side of the deal never came to frui-tion however.

After his arrest it was discovered thatthe man is also wanted in Durban for thesame offence.

He appears in the Cape Town Magis-trate’s Court today.

W/O Daphne Dell, spokesperson for Mil-nerton police, adds that more victimsmight have been fooled by the suspect andshould come forward.

“Most of the times the man would gofrom door-to-door and advertise his ‘serv-ices’ and hand out pamphlets. If someonewanted these frames then they were re-quired to pay a deposit,” explains Dell.

A Sunset Beach victim paid a lot of mon-ey to the suspect and when he couldn’t lo-cate him, he approached the police.

He was then told to try and contact thesuspect again and set up another appoint-ment. Much to the victim’s surprise hemanaged to get hold of the suspect andasked him to provide even more alumini-um window frames for his house in SunsetBeach. get in the way of having a whale of a timeat Milnerton Aquatic Club (MAC) on Satur-

day.While the wind was howling, the cold bit-

ing andRietvlei once again crept up towardsthe clubhouse, members celebrated the an-nual MAC Opening Cruise.It didn’t all go according to plan, however.In Roman times, nations went into land

battles waving banners to identify them-selves and they chanted war cries to intimi-date the enemy.In drier times (remember them?) MAC

members used to adopt this ancient tradi-tion to decorate their boats at opening cruis-es. This weekend they had to make do with-out fancy decorations. But, there was plentyof flour!Conservation officer, Pat Downing says:

“Eve Howarth told me that, in all her 30 oddyears of being a member, has she laughedso much at the antics of the children andPatrick, the groundsman, who sprayed eve-ryone with the fire hose, water pistols andflour bombs.”The communication officer Angela Gray

elaborates on this annual event at the begin-ning of spring: “It is usually marked by aformal raising of the national and club bur-gee (flag) followed by a review of the fleet –a colourful tradition that is steeped in morethan 600 years of Royal Navy tradition andhistory, wherein Admirals (and/or royalty)used to review their fleet on special occa-sions. Unfortunately boats were unable tolaunch for the sail-past and thus thiscouldn’t happen.”Given that the opening of the new season

also marked the anniversary of a five-yearplan, Commodore Ross Cowing chose to usethe occasion to review the club’s achieve-ments by honouring those who had beenworking towards these goals.Continues Gray: “Clearly the plan had

worked and there was an extensive list ofachievements – from MAC having the

youngest team in the Lipton Cup for a fewyears, to boasting National Champions invarious boat classes, as well as havingyoungsters who have travelled the Worldand represented South Africa at variousWorld Championships in wake-boarding,sailing,windsurfing andwater skiing. Theirachievements are an inspiration to all andhave certainly laid down a great foundationfor what promises to be another enjoyable

and successful season at MAC.”Downing agrees when she adds: “The Flag

Thousands of Melkbosstrand, Atlantis, Ta-ble View and Milnerton residents will em-brace the decision that the planned 500 hec-tareWesternCapeRegional Landfill site be-tweenMelkbosstrand andAtlantis has beenscrapped.The vociferous objections by the public

led byWillem Steenkamp have finally beenheeded by authorities, so for now the siteon Donkergat farm will remain undis-turbed.Themanwhomanaged to garnermassive

amount of support from the area,Steenkamp, informed TygerBurger of thedecision by Anton Bredell, MEC of LocalGovernment, Environmental Affairs and

Development Planning.Says Steenkamp: “This has been a seven

year struggle for me personally and is in-deed a victory for us as a community aswellas all our neighbours in Dassenberg, Atlan-tis, Blouberg, Table View,Milnerton and soforth. For those that are not fully aware –our town and surrounds were threatenedwith the implementation of an enormous 50metre high landfill site on the doorstep ofMelkbosstrandwhichwould have served asthe new waste treatment facility for theWestern Cape.”There have been a plethora of media re-

ports over the last few years about the pro-posed landfill site and those who oppose it.Steenkamp adds that it was never a case

of “not onourdoorstep”argument, but rath-er one pointing out the fundamental flaws

in the whole political process of those inpower seven years ago.Various ratepayers’ organisations, un-

ions and residents launched the country’sbiggest appeal against a Record of Decisionever and after authorities granted the ap-peal, a court case ensued.It was ruled that the appeal should never

have been granted and itwas back to squareone for the opposition.Thousands of man-hours and rands were

spent over the course of seven years, so thisdecision by Bredell is a weight offSteenkamp’s shoulders.Suffice to say that chairperson of the

Melkbosstrand Ratepayers’ Association,John Taylor, is also over the moon.“Now it’s up to the City to decide what

they’re going to do from here,” he says.

Police remain tight-lipped overthe number of policememberswith criminal records in the

northern suburbs of Cape Town.An ongoing audit on police crimi-

nality, in July revealed that asmany as 1 448 police members inSouthAfricahave criminal records,a crisis parliamentarian DianneKohler Barnard, DA shadow minis-ter of police, has taken up.

Of these criminal cops, 306 hadcriminal records before they joinedthe police and 1 142 committedcrimes while in the police, KohlerBarnard says.

Documents show Gauteng withthe highest number of criminalcops, 325, followed by the EasternCape at 275, KwaZulu-Natal at 173,Free State at 141 and the WesternCape at 140.

According to her the vast majori-ty of these perpetrators are topbrass including one major-generaland are all still employed by the po-lice, yet to be fired.

It was further revealed, that 568 ofthe 1 448members are guilty ofmul-tiple and serious criminal offences.

“The breakdown shows that therewere a total of 3 204 offences com-mitted by the 1 448 convicted policemembers who are still employed inthe SAPS,” she said.

This includes 54 for murder, 116for attempted murder, 37 for rape,33 for attempted rape and 917 for as-sault.

This month Kohler Barnard sub-sequently called on National PoliceCommissioner, Riah Phiyega totake immediate action and dismissthe criminal police officers, as sheis empowered to in terms of section36 of the SAPS Act.

“The police are constitutionallyentrusted with preventing, combat-ing and investigating crime...it istherefore imperative that the peo-ple entrusted with this duty are notcriminals themselves,” she said.Ac-cording to Kohler Barnard, the au-dit of police criminality only wentup until the end of 2009, and she be-lieves this figure to be much higherif continued to 2012.

Convicted“In 2010/11, 2 154 members were

criminally charged, only 869 weresuspended and only 520 dismissedfrom the service. In 2011/12, 1 323

SAPS members were charged withmurder, rape, armed robbery andcorruption. Are those who wereconvicted still working within theSAPS? If this audit is anything to goby, there is a strong possibility thatthis is the case,” she said.

Meanwhile she wrote a letter toMinister of Police, Nathi Mthethwarequesting that he explains the ra-tionale for keeping convicted crimi-nals in the police service.

According to her no deadline hasbeen set for the completion of the“audit process”whichwas begun in2010 and not one criminal memberof the SAPS has been dismissed.

Since the news broke two monthsago, neither the provincial police,nor national police responded toseveralmedia inquiries fromTyger-Burger.

Criminal record cops

Maitland police members havemade a “major breakthrough”when they linked two housebreak-ing suspectswith other similar inci-dents in Brooklyn.

According to local police spokes-person, W/O Siyabulela Vukubi,there was a noteworthy escalationof housebreakings in Brooklynover the last two weeks.

Says Vukubi: “The suspects arenow positively linked to otherhousebreakings that occurred inBrooklyn. The arrest of the two sus-pects is a major breakthrough andpolice would encourage the mem-bers of the community to be morevigilant and assist the police inbringing suspects to book.”

The two suspects, aged 27 and 33were arrested last week Wednes-day.

Vukubi elaborates: “After receiv-ing an attempted housebreakingcomplaint in Brooklyn on the Tues-day and being given a detailed de-scription of two suspects, our mem-bers vowed not to rest until they ap-prehended them. The next day atapproximately 10:00 the police wereon vehicle patrols when they spot-ted the two suspects, who were thenpositively identified by the com-plainant.”

Further investigation revealedthat the items they had stolen weresold to someone in Brooklyn.

Police approached the addressand recovered one laptop, two cell-phones and one external hard drive.

All these items were positively

identified as stolen from differentaddresses in the area of Brooklyn.

“Residents must be warned not tobuy stolen or suspected stolen itemsand goods as they will also face thefull might of the law,” concludesVukubi.

bathed in an icy pond in the Drakensberg.But, those icey waters are no match for

Cecilia Schutte, when it comes to her fightagainst drug abuse.The swimmer,who until recently resided

inTableView, broke another ice-coolworldrecord when she swam a mile in two de-grees Celsius water in the Drakensbergmountains at a resort in Lesotho.It is her mission in life to use her talent

to inspire people to shrug off their fear ofconquering the elements and push theboundaries of the body’s capacity to sur-vive; and use this new-found strength tochange the conditions they find aroundthem.The Drakensberg swim was done accord-

ing toEnglishChannel rules, ofwearing on-ly Speedo bather, cap and goggles.“We had locals watching the swim as the

word got out that someone was going to doa swim in the icy waters of the lake,”shesays.“Theywatched in amazement, never hav-

ing seen anything like it.“Some people came up to me and told me

how they were inspired to push for theirgoals they have set out in life, and that ifI can swim in these cold conditions andpush the mind to overcome what the bodyis protesting, they can do the same.“This was really inspiring to me and

what I hope to achievewithmyextremepio-neer swims.“I really felt I have accomplished part of

my goal: to inspire young men and womento push their own boundaries, and to usetheir own talents to better the conditions ofothers.”

The swim was for drug awareness and inparticular, Narconon, the NGO that doesdrug education and drug prevention pro-grammes in schools and the community na-tionally.“During the swim I had to remindmyself

to breathe a bit deeper and swim at a slowand steady pace as this was also an altitudeswim,” she continued.“Coming from Cape Townwhich is at sea

level it really felt different to exercise at ahigher altitude.“I had to swim slower around the buoys

and change my stroke to breaststroke towade through the broken ice we had tobreak up for my swim.“This was something new to me, to push

the ice aside to get to the buoys.“For the first time my core temperature

had dropped below 31 degrees Celsius!” shesaid.She also pointed out that the first 20 min-

utes after the swim is the most dangerouspart.“As your core temperature drops further

due to the warming process that allows thecold blood to flow through the veins again.”She also thanked her support team and

sponsors who made this swim possible.“The swim could not have taken place

successfully without the help of my spon-sors who supported me.“Wingfield Motors and The Doc in Park-

Residentswho need assistance to pay theirmonthlymunicipal accounts nowhave un-til 31 October to apply for special rates re-bates from the City of Cape Town.

Senior citizenswhoare 60 years or older,as well as recipients of a disability grantor pension, could qualify for rates rebatesranging from 10 % to 100 %.

The upper limit of total household in-come for these two categorieshas also beenraised from R10 500 to R12 000 per month.

In addition, all property owners with atotal household incomeofR3 000 or less permonth may apply to be registered as indi-

gent, andmay qualify for a 100 % rates andrefuse rebate. Their arrears may also bewritten off once during occupation of theproperty.

Apart from the full rates rebate onhouseholds earning R3 500 or less permonth or whose residential properties arevalued at R200 000 or less, the city has add-ed new indigent categories for people whohave an income greater than R3 500 andnot more than R5 000 per month.

If a total household income is between:V R3 501 andR4 000 residentswill receive

a 75 % rates rebate

V R4 001 andR4 500 residentswill receivea 50 % rates rebate

V R4 501 andR5 000 residentswill receivea 25 % rates rebate

“The rebates start from the date that thecity receives applications and remain val-id until the end of June next year,” thecity’s executive deputy mayor, Ian Neil-son, said. City extends special rates rebates due date


The anticipation growsquickly in the audi-ence as the Fairy Godmother comes out on-to the stage at GrandWest Casino.

“Where is everyone?” asks the FairyGodmother.

A shady character who stands elevatedamong the audience says authoritatively:“Look up!”

The Fairy Godmother hesitates for a mo-ment.

“God?”“No! I am the Ghost of GrandWest Past!

I am here to take you on a journey back tothe year 2013 and to a war between twoschools!”

In a heartbeat the stage fills up with 150Milnerton High School performers and 45minutes later they are crowned championsof the GrandWest High School Jam compe-tition.

“This competition is open to all schoolsin theWestern Cape,” explains the school’sdrama teacher and the architect of the mu-sical, Laura Bosman.

“The school will put a proposal togetherfor a musical extravaganza with singing,dancing and a little bit of acting. The top10 schools are selected for the preliminaryround and then the top three are chosen forthe finals. We won, but we are so gratefulfor the other school’s variety to keep thiscompetition fresh.”

If one listens to the concept behind thewinning school’s musical then it is no sur-prise that they were victorious.

Bosman elaborates on the musical:“There are two schools that are vying forthe trophy. One girl from the one schoolfalls in love with a boy from their opposi-tion, goes to their rehearsal, seeswhat theyare doing, tells her school, the two breakup and there is a big, fat fight and it all endswhen they love each other again.”

I got the impression that Bosman musthave told this story a million times before,because shenever tookabreathduring thisparticular synopsis.

The seed of inspiration for their next per-formancewas first plantedwhen the schoolwon the same competition two years ago.

Bosman mulled over the content formonths and then in April this year the re-hearsals started.

The show uses songs such as “The FinalCountdown” and “Somebody to Love” andthen they change the words to suit the mu-sical itself.

The headmaster, Paul Besener, heardthem rehearse every now and again, butsaw the show for the first time during thepreliminary round.

It took his breath away, and he describedit as “world class”.

It is still a long time before the next com-petition, but Bosman reckons it could be agood idea to work together with a few dis-advantaged schools next time and sharetheir now extensive experience.

Anti-drug march will leadpast alleged drug densThe community of Brooklyn and Ysterp-laat have identified the abuse of drugsas one of the biggest issues in the areaat a recent public participation meeting.

MyCiTi roadworks willcause Koeberg Rd delaysThe City of Cape Town alerts motoristsin Table View and surrounds of laneclosures along Koeberg Road to allow forMyCiTi roadworks.

Weather permitting, traffic will berestricted by closing one lane in eitherdirection along Koeberg Road, betweenPlattekloof Road and Blaauwberg Road,from Monday this week on a continuousbasis until the work is complete.

Other lanes along Koeberg Road willbe open. This will cause unavoidabledisruption to traffic flow, particularlyduring peak hours. This should berelieved when the Sandown Road link tothe N7 is opened in September.

A big step forward for MyCiTi

The three new MyCiTi stations, Grey, Janssens and Wood, will be open as follows: 05:15 to 21:45 on weekdays andfrom 05:45 to 21:45 on weekends.

From 7 September 2013, there will be new services in the Table View area and surrounding suburbs, with the opening of the next phase of thecorridor along Blaauwberg Road.

After significant disruptionscaused by construction,residents have cause to

celebrate. The section of the mainroute between Table View stationand Wood station is complete andready for buses.On Saturday, 7 September, all

three of the new stations will beopened and MyCiTi buses will bemaking use of the dedicated buslanes. This will mean passengerstravelling to and from the centralcity will be able to start andend their journeys from Wood,Janssens and Grey stationsinstead of only from the mainTable View station.All three stations will offer the

facility to purchasemyconnectcards and load money for MyCiTiStandard fares and MyCiTi Moverpackages.At the same time, the current

F14, F15 and F16 routes willbe replaced by four permanentroutes serving the Blouberg,Big Bay and Parklands areas:

West Beach – Table View– SunningdaleBig Bay – Table View– ParklandsSunningdale – Gie Road– WoodSunningdale – Wood Drive– Wood

On all these routes, the smaller9-metre buses will be used. Thenew stops, together with a rampthat can be deployed from beneaththe bus door to provide levelboarding at the kerbside, will makethe new services more accessiblefor people with special needs.

Both of the routes 215 and 216serving Parklands and ParklandsEast will end at Wood station,which will become a new transferpoint for passengers transferringto T01 along Blaauwberg Road toTable View station and on to theCivic Centre station.The new development has

changed Blaauwberg Road, andincludes a cycle and pedestriantrack in the middle of the island,which is well lit and landscapedwith indigenous plants. This isalready being used by cyclists,walkers and skateboarders andhas the benefit of priority signalsfor cyclists.“The opening of this next

phase of the services in the TableView area is very exciting,” saysMayoral Committee Member:Transport for Cape Town,Councillor Brett Herron.“Our contractors are hard at

work to complete the rest ofthe main route between Woodstation and Potsdam Road, whichwill open up a link from Dunoonto Table View, connecting to thecentral city. We hope to have thisservice up and running before theend of the year.”He added that MyCiTi was a

partnership with the bus andminibus taxi industries.“The signing of a long-term

contract with the operatingcompanies representing theindustry marks the beginning ofa new era for public transportin Cape Town. It is a significantempowerment opportunity,and once again we are leadingthe way.”

MyCiTi’s new fare system offers you two ways to pay for your travel. You can choose which option suits you bestwhen you next load money. These are the features and benefits:

MyCiTi Standard MyCiTi Mover

Load any amount on yourmyconnect card. Load fees apply. Load Mover packages (R80, R100, R150, R200, R400, R600or R1 000) in the form of travel points. No load fees.

When you use this money to travel on a MyCiTi bus, you willbe charged the Standard fares.

When you use these points to travel on a MyCiTi bus, youwill be charged the Mover fares, which are at least 20%cheaper in both Peak and Saver fare periods.

You can also use this money for small purchases of up toR200 at any retailer, like a debit card.

You can use Mover points only for MyCiTi fares.

Loadmoney at MyCiTi station kiosks and at participatingretailers.

Load Mover packages only at selected MyCiTi station kiosks(see www.myciti.org.za for a list).

• Ask the kiosk staff to load your choice of Standard or Mover.• You can have both kinds of money loaded on yourmyconnect card at the same time, but you cannot transfer money

sies ’n ‘Jack of all trades’ wat uiteindelik vasgesteek het by die kunste-gedeelte,” sê Ste-phan.“Ek het die eerste keer in die musiekbe-

dryf geland toe ek so net oor die drie jaar ge-lede by Chris Coetzer begin sanglesseneem,” verduidelik hy.Coetzer is ’n lid van die plaaslike Drie Te-

nore. “Deur hom het ek met Christa Steynen haar seun, DouwSteyn, in die verbindinggetree,” sê Stephan.Stephan het toe sy eie liedjies geskryf,

maar sê hy het sy singery eers geheim ge-hou.“Toe ek uiteindelik drie jaar gelede die

moed bymekaar skraap, toe besluit ek ekgaan nou voluit,” sê Stephan. Sy eerste al-bum, Los my hart, is in 2011 bekend gestel.“Van daar af was dit nou net een rigting

– vorentoe,” sê hy.

Legendary concert pianist, David Helfgott,will bid farewell to South Africa when heperforms his last shows in the country at theCity Hall on 14 and 15 September for hisFarewell, South Africa tour.

Since 1998, Helfgott has been performingsold-out concerts in South Africa and holdsthe country very dear to his heart.

He even chose to celebrate his 60th birth-day in 2007 with a concert tour to the coun-try.

Helfgott soared to international fame afterthe release of theOscar award-winning film,Shine, in which Geoffrey Rush gave a com-passionate portrayal of the pianist.

As a result, his exceptional life story hasinspired people across the globe ever since.

Born in Melbourne to Polish-Jewish par-ents, hismusical talent was obvious from anearly age and he became known as a childprodigy. He went on to study at the prestig-ious Royal College ofMusic in London at theage of 19, but towards the end of his studieshe suffered an unfortunate mental break-down and returned to Australia.

Over the years he managed to overcomehis illness with the help of loyal friends andhis caring wife, Gillian, whom he marriedin 1984.

Since the mid-1980, he re-established him-self as a concert pianist; touring all over theworld and giving recitals that inspire and

move people from all walks of life.Helfgott will be performing at Cape Town
