STANDERTON - It was all systems go for the schools of Lekwa Local Municipality on the first day of the 2016 academic year, but the same couldn’t be said about Khunjuliwe Secondary School in Extension 8, Sakhile.

Khunjuliwe is one school in the Lekwa West Circuit that has been identified by the Mpumalanga Department of Education for the roll out of Maths, Science and Technology – the same with Sikhetheleni Secondary School in the Lekwa East Circuit. The trouble started when the pupils of Khuljuliwe Secondary School arrived at the school on the first day and the Gr 10s who did not do well enough in Gr 9 Mathematics and Science were told that they will have to enroll at other schools. This followed a meeting organised by the school with parents and pupils in November 2015.

The news was not well received by the affected pupils. In solidarity with their school mates, scores of pupils took to the streets, marching to the Circuit Office on Friday, 15 January. In the absence of the Circuit Manager who was attending an MEC meeting in Secunda, Mr Madoda Malinga was delegated to attend to the pupils’ grievances and complaints.

The unhappy pupils alleged that they had been locked out of classes

and were told to go and seek admission at other schools. The pupils angrily vowed that they were not going anywhere and threatened to disrupt the classes the following Monday if their demands were not met.

Cosmos News spoke to the Circuit Manager of Lekwa West to hear their side of the story. The Manager was quick to set the record straight and said that it is not true that the pupils had been left out to look for alternative admission. “The fact of the matter is that the pupils and parents were warned in November 2015 that those who fail to make the grade in Mathematics and Science would not be absorbed into the system. The new Maths, Science and Technology programme requires pupils to study Mathematics and not Mathematic Literacy. The programme will carry pupils from 2016 to 2018 after which the school will be a fully fletched MST school as required by law to win the battle of poor Mathematics and Science results.”

After all was said and done, the Circuit Manager announced that the matter had been resolved amicably. Twenty pupils were reportedly enrolled at Khula-Sakhile Secondary School and eight at Azalea Combined School, while the rest were placed back at Khunjuliwe Secondary School. DM

STANDERTON - A coal truck from Branddrift Coal just outside Standerton overturned in the rain on Thursday evening, 15 February, at about 20:00. According to the spokesperson of the company, the driver lost control after the truck skidded on water on the road after the heavy downpour on Thursday evening. The truck jackknifed and the horse overturned, while the trailers pushed it through the decorative steel fence of the cemetery in Walter Sisulu Drive.

The driver was rushed to hospital but was discharged soon afterwards with no serious injuries. The horse will most probably be written off, but the trailers were not severely damaged. The truck did not carry a load at the time of the accident. JD

JD

The owner of Skyline Cafe in Meyerville, Mr Alberto Franco, parked his vehicle at his shop on 29 December. He later discovered that the vehicle was stolen and reported it to the local police. The next day, the vehicle was found burning close to the Robertsdrift road and it was clear that the thieves first helped themselves to spare parts they needed before setting fire to the vehicle.

JD

SAKHILE - An Ethiopian man was robbed at gunpoint and sustained two gunshot wounds during an armed robbery at a tuck shop in Extension 4, Sakhile.

The victim was shot in the stomach and his right thigh and according to the police spokesperson, has since succumbed to his wounds. The incident is currently under investigation. JD

“Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

The devil cannot just walk right up to you and rob you of your health, peace or family. He cannot just come into your life to enforce disease and destruction. If the devil can do that, then he does not have to walk about “seeking whom he may devour”.

He only has to walk straight up to anyone he wants to devour and devour him! But since the Bible says that he goes about seeking whom he may devour, the truth then is that there are people whom he cannot devour. You see, the devil goes about like a roaring lion trying to stir up fear in people with his roars. But the people who are not devourable are those who refuse to be intimidated by his roars because they know that the true Lion of Judah, Jesus Christ (Revelation 5:5), has already come and rendered powerless him who had the power of death. (Hebrews 2:14, NASB)

They know that the devil cannot just do anything to them because the Lion of Judah resides in them, and that He is greater than the devil who is in the world. (1 John 4:4) My friend, the Lion of Judah is in you. He has given you rights, privileges, authority and power. He redeemed you with His blood. Therefore, everything about you and your life is redeemed by His blood.

So if you are fearful about losing your job, cover your job with the blood of Jesus. If you are worried about your children’s safety in these days of terrorist attacks, plead the blood of Jesus over them. If you have received a bad report from the doctor, speak the blood over yourself. Whatever you have covered with the blood of Jesus, God declares, “Protected! Redeemed!” And the devil flees when he sees the blood. And when he flees, he takes with him sicknesses, diseases, pains, sufferings, destruction and loss.

Once the devil knows that you know who you are in Christ and what you have in Him, his days of intimidating you are over, and you are numbered among the undevourable!

Maak sekerSTANDERTON - The festive season of 2015 has been hailed as the quietest and most crime free season in the last five years, thanks to the passion and dedication shown by young Community Policing Forum members who patrolled the streets in the CBD. Young people have always been recruited by the CPF to come forward and assist in patrolling the streets along with the police.

The volunteers were divided into three groups every day to cover all known crime hot spots. Criminals had no place to hide, because the young volunteers worked very hard to make sure shoppers could go about their business without being robbed by heartless criminals.

Many business people were touched by the passion, dedication and hard work displayed

by the youths. Food and refreshments were donated from all corners of the business sector every day to the patrollers. During the festive season, no incidents of shoplifting were reported. No handbag snatching, no common robbery, no breaking into cars and no armed robberies were reported. Police have also commended the CPF street patrollers for their hard work and sacrifice to keep the streets safe.

In recognition for their hard work and dedication, some people from the business sector who want to remain anonymous donated a sheep to roast during an award function held on Saturday, 16 January. CPF patrollers were awarded certificates of recognition for their dedication in serving the community by Standerton SAPS management. DM

MORGENZON - Three suspects are behind bars for allegedly breaking into a shop in the Sivukile Township near Mor-genzon. Constable Nzimande, Communi-cation Officer at Morgenzon Police Sta-tion, said that unknown thugs broke into the shop on the night of 10 January.

At that time, the police received a tip-off from members of the community about stolen groceries that were being stored at a house in Sivukile Extension 2. It is re-ported that when the police arrived at the given address, they indeed discovered groceries, as well as airtime vouchers and packets of cigarettes in the house.

Three men aged 19, 25 and 26, who were found in possession of the goods could not produce proof of purchase.

They were arrested and the goods were recovered and handed back to the shop-keeper.

Cst Nzimande confirmed that the sus-pects were charged with business burglary and appeared in Morgenzon Magistrate’s Court on 12 January. The suspects will remain in custody while the investigation continues. DM

STANDERTON - A motorist parked his car and made his way to a store on Friday, 14 January. Before he had reached the store, he returned to his car to retrieve something he had forgotten. When he reached his car he was surprised to find a stranger in the car searching the cabin.

He wrestled with the stranger and found a remote controller in his pocket.

The victim told the police that the suspect fled the scene after the device was ceased. The device turned out to be a jamming device. This device is used by criminals to interfere with the signal of the car’s original remote control.

Captain Joseph Hlatshwayo who was the acting Communication Officer said that the criminals watch as the motorist leaves the car, they use the jammer before the motorist locks the car with his/her remote control. Under the impression that the car is locked, the owner walks away.

The burglar then walks to the car with its doors already unlocked. Motorists are warned to make sure that car doors are locked before leaving the car.

Captain Hlatshwayo said numerous tests were carried out at the station and it has been proven that the jamming device is genuine. DM

Business robbery leaves couple traumatizedSTANDERTON - Business in the CBD suffered a blow when a couple (business owners) was robbed in a retail store after a relatively quiet festive season.

The SAPS received a call on Saturday, 16 January at 17:00 when a couple had just been robbed by un-known men. When the police arrived at the scene the couple was still traumatized. It is alleged that four men walked into the retail store while the owners were about to close the business.

The suspects pretended to be potential customers, but once they were inside the store they closed the door be-hind them and reportedly threatened the couple to hand over all the money in the store.

In a statement made to the police, the owners reported

that while men holding guns were keeping watch over them, two other suspects were busy removing cash from the till, they stole their three personal cellphones and an iPad.

The couple was tied up with electrical cables before the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money and the store’s CCTV system in order to hide their identity.

The couple managed to free themselves and call the police. Nobody was injured during the robbery. A case of business robbery is under investigation.

Police have appealed to members of the public who might have seen the robbery unfold to call Lieutenant Johannes Nhlabathi on 017 7191250. DM

STANDERTON - Five teenagers went out to cool off from the blistering heat at the River Park on Tuesday, 5 January. While relaxing in the shade, two unknown males appeared from nowhere and demanded cash and cell phones.

One of the teenagers was a 17-year-old boy and the rest were girls, aged 15, 16 and 17. The culprits, one wielding a knife, suddenly attacked the boy and pushed him to the ground as they searched his pockets. Six cell phones were stolen from the group, and the culprits ran away.

The terrified group of friends made their way to the taxi rank after the ordeal. While at the taxi rank they spotted the alleged thieves and immediately phoned the no-nonsense CPF leader, Charles Msibi.

Msibi arrived at the taxi rank with his army, they searched the grounds and within a short time the culprits

Outing ended in nightmarewere spotted in the crowd where they were cornered. One suspect managed to flee on foot. Madness ensued as angry members of the community attacked the 25-year-old suspect with sticks, stones and anything at their disposal. Msibi managed to calm down the crowd.

The suspect handed back four cellphones. Msibi acted quickly by calling the police when crowds were baying for the suspect’s blood. The bleeding suspect was rescued by police. The teenagers were advised to have their parents come to the station to open a case on their behalf.

An uncle of one of the victims arrived to open a case of common robbery against the suspect. Lieutenant Nhlabathi confirmed that a case of common robbery was registered and the police are looking for the second suspect. The apprehended suspect was due to appear in court on Wednesday, 6 January. DM

STANDERTON - The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) embarked on a march in October 2014 calling for the former Executive Mayor of Lekwa Municipality Councillor Matsidiso Marojane, Municipal Manager Mr Linda Tshabalala and the former speaker, now Executive Mayor Councillor LR Dhlamini to step down. After handing a memorandum to the ANC regional representative, angry marchers went on the rampage on their way back to Sakhile. Several foreigner-owned shops were looted along the way.

Police had their hands full when unruly youths vented their anger on the municipal building in Sakhile. They attacked the building with stones, and attempted to set the building alight, but quick reaction by the police who fired rubber bullets, managed to disperse the unruly crowd. When the night fell, the entrance to the building was set alight and flames gutted the building. Most of the

furniture was destroyed by fire.Officials had to vacate the building and

relocate to the CBD. When contacted for comment, SANCO leadership distanced itself from the incident, and claimed their members dispersed after the march. Whatever happened at night was a criminal element, of which SANCO cannot take responsibility. Millions of tax payers’ money has been spent to rebuild and renovate the entire building.

In the aftermath, innocent community members had to bear the brand of false incrimination and senior citizens were hard hit as they had to travel to the CBD for service. On Monday, 12 January, Lekwa Municipality officials moved back to the Sakhile offices. The community of Sakhile can now once again receive full services right on their doorstep. The acting Municipal Manager, Ms M Radebe confirmed that Sakhile offices will provide the same service to the community as it has done before. DM

STANDERTON - The community of the entire Sakhile and Rooikoppen had to endure the discomfort of dry taps for three days, while Lekwa Local Municipality officials and councilors were running from pillar to post trying their best to restore the water supply after the mainline pipe in Marais Street in Azalea broke on Monday morning, 28 December at 06:30.

According to the Executive Manager of the Technical Department, Mr Herbert Shai, they sprang into action once they learned of the problem, but their efforts were halted when they could not find a suitable replacement coupling. To make matters worse, all the suppliers were closed for the festive season. A coupling that was at their disposal was utilized late on Monday evening. He said the water supply was restored, but it only lasted for a few hours. At 03:00 all hell broke loose when the replacement gave in under the immense pressure. It was back to square one.

Shai said in the meantime all the affected

areas were receiving water supplied by mobile water tanks that were dispatched immediately. By 14:00 on Tuesday all the officials and councillors, including the Municipal Manager whose leave was interrupted by the situation, were on site when the reconnection process was underway. Thanks to Goldi Chicken Farms that came to the rescue by donating a suitable coupling. By 18:00 the water supply was restored.

A few hours later in the night, the water supply was disrupted once more when the pipe broke yet again. This time the workers battled until 11:00 on Wednesday to restore water supply. Shai was quick to mention that the Municipality will start the replacement of the entire aging infrastructure in January 2016. The acting Municipal Manager, Ms Makhasazi Radebe, apologized to the community of Sakhile for all the inconvenience they had to endure. She assured the people that the municipality is doing everything possible to render a quality service at all times. DM

STANDERTON - The DA of Lekwa Municipality says that the ANC of Lekwa have a good story to hide after they failed, for the third time, to answer questions that have been asked at the Lekwa Local Council Meetings.

The DA says that they will resort to other authorities, if needs be, in order to force the ANC to answer vital questions which financially affects the community.

The cat-and-mouse-tactics played by the ANC shows that they do not respect the community, but rather think of their own pockets and therefore disrespects the Batho Pele Princi-pals of transparency.

The most important questions are the following: 1. What is the status of the court case between Hates Matko-

vich and Lekwa Local Municipality regarding the aliena-tion of Grootverlangen property that was set aside for de-velopment under which Lekwa was legally committed to?

2. Who authorised a stay-over at Rustenburg to the value of R4 860 of where Lekwa has no business to attend to?

3. What is Lekwa’s solution to the problem at the TLC-Sec-tion where two houses were built on one stand?

4. Who benefitted from the jazz festival that was held at the River Park on Saturday, 3 October? Did the Municipal-ity generate any funds from this function, and how much money has been allocated to the Municipality?

5. What are the reasons why the Municipality did not adhere to the agreement between Eskom and themselves to settle the outstanding debt owed to Eskom to the tune of R213 million?

6. Was there a written agreement between Lekwa and or any other party to hold a function on the Show Grounds? What is the amount that Lekwa was supposed to receive?

7. The DA wants a cut-off list of all wards including Sakhile, which does not appear on the official cut-off list to non-payers of electricity

8. How many vehicles are currently being leased from the private company which provides Lekwa with vehicles, and what costs are involved?

9. How many payments have been made towards Thami & Sisters contractors who seem to get most of the contracts in Lekwa and what are the amounts?

10. Who sold and gave permission that gravel could be ex-cavated from a portion of municipal property adjacent to the landfill site? Where are the payments to Lekwa Local Municipality?

11. Who benefitted from the amount of R219 506.78, R383 366 and R66 000 which was listed as ‘camera han-dling fees’?

12. The funeral arrangements of late Cllr Kgomotso Motloung cost Lekwa almost R180 000. What was this amount spent on? Could this not have been used to fix the water pumps in order for the people to have access to potable water?

13. What was the purchase price of the new Mayor’s car? Why did he need a new car? Was there a vehicle bought for the office of the Speaker and at what price?

The ANC have been avoiding most of these questions since the beginning of the year and have come up with more excuses than answers. The DA have laid a formal complaint with the Public Protector regarding some of the answers not provided. The question is what are they hiding? (Media statement: Cllr Louis Jansen van Rensburg) JD

STANDERTON - Thugs broke into the kitchen of Nkazimulo ye nkololeko Stimu-lation Centre and stole utensils meant to assist the disadvantaged children on their daily struggle for a better future. The cen-tre for disabled children situated at the A tech Centre in Azalea was found burgled.

Ms G Nkutha, the Centre Manager made a startling discovery on Tuesday, 29 De-cember 2015 when she made a brief visit to the office. She told the police that when she opened the kitchen area, she was shocked to find the place turned upside down, and saw a hole in the ceiling. Further investiga-tion showed that the culprits gained entry from the toilet area and made a hole in the ceiling to gain access to the kitchen.

They stole three big pots, three medium size pots, a 9 kg gas cylinder, a 20ℓ urn, a 10ℓ kettle, four big vegetable knives and a bag of onions. Nkutha said it is very strange that the culprits did not break the security door to the toilets area. It is obvious to her that the thugs are in possession of the secu-rity door key. Forensic expects were called to the scene as fingerprints were visible on various items. A case of business burglary was opened for investigation. Lieute nant Nhlabathi appealed to members of the public who might have information about the burglary to come forward. “The information will be treated with the maximum confidentiality,” he said. DM

SHS skitter by prysuitdeling

DK

Liggies verwerf top toekenning
