This was the motto of Bosmans-dam High School for their matricsgoing into the 2011 school year.

It’s a motto they stuck to andwhen matric results were releasedlast week, the school achieved a 100percent pass rate.

Bosmansdam’s principal, MrDanie Human, says the result isthanks to hard work from both thelearners and the teachers, withboth sides putting in extra time.

Human also points out that theschool enjoys a low staff turnoverof dedicated teachers, which he be-lieves also plays a role in theschool’s success.

The number of university exemp-tions at the school has also gone upthis year. “We would like to contin-ue with that,” Human says.

Fairbairn College is not far be-hind with their matric pass rate of99.9 percent.

“They’ve done exceptionallywell,” says principal, Mr BernieMarchand.

The school is also hoping thattheir result will go up after a re-mark as Marchand says the one fail-ure was from someone who hadnever failed at the school before.

One of the school’s stand-outlearners is Angela Wu, who was in-vited to Leeuwenhof, Western CapePremier Helen Zille’s official resi-dence, to collect an award for herachievements yesterday.

Among other outstanding re-sults, Wu achieved 100 percent foraccounting, 99 percent for maths,and 99 percent for physical science.

She also wrote the optional mathspaper 3, for which she achieved 97percent.

Parow High School can also bragwith a pass rate of 99.25 percent

with also only one failure.“It’s a bit better than before,”

says the school’s deputy principal,Riaan Goussard.

He says the school is especiallyproud of their three A candidates:Neil Adam, Lauren Fortuin and De-mi Johnson.

Edgemead High School’s head ofacademics, DeVerra Vollgraaf, saystheir 99.5 percent pass rate isthanks to very dedicated staff.

The school has two all-roundersin Alex Finley and JomaréGroenewald who both achieved sev-en distinctions.

Gerrit Odendaal, deputy princi-pal of President High School, saysthey are also very proud of theirmatrics.

The school achieved a pass rate of99.3 percent with three of theirlearners achieving individual aver-ages above 80 percent.

In all, 138 of their 139 matriclearners passed and Odendaal saystheir pass rate is up from last year.

“The teachers did an extremelygood job,” he says.

Tygerberg High School can bragwith 22 learners with A averages.

Two of their learners achievednine subject distinctions, withthree learners achieving eight andanother five achieving seven sub-ject distinctions.

Wilma Rossouw, principal of Ty-gerberg High School, says the 14learners who took German as a sub-ject also all got distinctions.

Tygerberg’s dux learner is RudolfByker, with an average of 94 per-cent.

He is closely followed by Liesl Ko-tzéwith 91,3 percent andJeaniLom-bard with 90 percent.

Most of the area’s schools saythey will be carrying on with theirwinning recipes this year.

This year started badly for Shi-mansky Jewellery in Canal Walkwhen five armed suspects pulledoff an audacious robbery andfled with several hundred thou-sand of rand of jewellery.

According to Milnerton policespokesperson, Warrant OfficerDaphne Dell, the men robbed thestore at 12:30 on 1 January.

Canal Walk CEO, Gavin Wood,elaborates: “Two of the suspectsdistracted the security guard thatwas positioned in the area close tothe store and three entered the Shi-mansky store. The suspects who en-tered the store were armed andsmashed one of the display cabi-nets, getting away with an undis-closed amount of jewellery. Noshots were fired and no one was in-jured.”

Says Dell: “The suspects fled on

foot and were noticed leaving CanalWalk inawhiteHonda.This vehiclewas also reported stolen the previ-ous week.”

Apparently a security guardclose to the jewellery store noticedwhen the suspects smashed the cab-inet and alerted the security per-sonnel via the shopping complex’scontrol room.

The police and centre securitywere on the scene within minutesand are currently investigating the

incident.Security footage clearly shows

the robbers pointing firearms atpersonnel in the store.

“Wehave clear security footageofthe faces of the robbers as they exit-ed the parking lot,” continues Dell.She adds that in their rush to getaway, the robbers drove throughthe security boom at the parking lotentrance.

This is not the first time that Ca-nal Walk was targeted, as Wood ex-

plains: “We are aware of similar in-cidents that have taken place at thecentre since its opening in 2000,however, in the recent past therehave been no incidents of this na-ture other than the Shimansky inci-dent.Webelieve this is due toproac-tive approach towards security.”

Wood concludes that the centrewill continue to assess its “rigor-ous” security precautions, by im-proving and tightening securitymeasures on an ongoing basis.

Gesie, wat byna heeltemal blind is, is ver-heug oor haar A’s in besigheidstudies, Afri-kaans en lewensoriëntering, maar wou baiegraag ook ’n onderskeiding behaalin ekonomie, wat sy met een per-sent misgeloop het.

Dié vak en wiskunde, wat sy ashaar gunstelingvak beskryf, laat synou hermerk.

“Ek kry gewoonlik diep in die tag-tigs vir wiskunde, maar het in dieeindeksamen 76% verwerf,” sê Ge-sie.

In ekonomie kort sy slegs een per-sent vir ’n onderskeiding.

Gesie sê haar goeie uitslae is tedanke aan harde werk. Deur dieloop van die jaar het sy hard gewerken in die eindeksamen het sy tussenvier dae en ’n week aan ’n vak ge-leer.

Haar pa het by tye verlof geneemom die werk vir Gesie te lees, of an-dersins het hy vroegmiddag van diewerk af gekom en saam met Gesieagter die boeke ingeskuif en terwylhy lees, het Gesie onthou.

Gesie is in 2003, toe sy in graadvier was, met kanker gediagnoseer.Op nege het dié dapper meisie ’nbreinoperasie van agt uur onder-gaan om ’n kwaadaardige gewas teverwyder. Dít het Gesie byna blindgelaat.

“Ek het baie geleer en nie baie uitgegaannie,” vertel sy by haar ouerhuis in Oakglen.

Gesie is een van ’n tweeling en haar suster,Martie, het ses onderskeidings behaal. Saamhet die twee in die eindeksamen wiskunde-en taalvraestelle uitgewerk. “Dié matriek-skryf was ’n spanpoging tussen my, my paen Martie,” vertel Gesie.

In die afgelope jare het TygerBurger ver-skeie kere oor Gesie berig – toe sy op negeja-rige ouderdom ’n breinoperasie ondergaanhet om ’n kwaadaardige gewas te verwyder,

toe sy hoërskool toe is, toe haar lewensver-haal in ’n handboek vir graad agt-leerlingeopgeneem is, toe sy Ryk Neethling, een vanhaar helde, ontmoet het en meer onlangs, toe600 ballonne op haar skool se sportveld virhaar losgelaat is.

Gesie se skoolhoof, Joh Dorfling, sê Gesiewas party dae asvaal weens die chemotera-pie wat sy deurlopend ontvang het, maar sêsy is ’n klein vasbytertjie. Joh sê Gesie moessoms tot in die eksamen chemoterapie ont-

vang. “Ons is baie bly vir Gesie se onthalween ons is baie trots op haar,” sê Joh.

Sy het reeds ’n rits planne vir 2012. “Myeerste droom is om vanjaar vir my tannie inNederland te gaan kuier,” sê Gesie. Dan wilsy ook die inkleurboek wat sy ’n paar jaargelede self ontwerp het, by kleuterskole enlaerskole bemark. Dié boek het sy opgevolgmet ’n tweede boek, wat sy ’n besighou-boeknoem. Daarin is haar eie ontwerpe van kop-krappers soos blokkiesraaisels, woordleg-kaarte en verbind-die-kolletjies.

School swells with prideANDRÉ BAKKES

Last year Sinenjongo High School in JoeSlovo Park excelled yet again in theirmatric results with an overall pass rateof 88,5 percent.

The significance of their latest results be-comes even more impressive when com-pared with the 27 percent pass rate in 2007and the 44 percent in 2009.

In 2010 the school had a 97 percent passrate, but back then it had far fewer matricsthan in 2011.

The massive improvement over the lastfew years is mainly attributed to the inter-vention of the Rabie Property Group, a com-pany which made Sinenjongo High Schoolthe major beneficiary of its Corporate SocialInvestment programme five years ago.

Rabie’s communications manager, Mag-gie Rowley, elaborates: “The school exceed-ed our expectations again by achieving an88,5 percent pass rate against the provincialpass rate of 82,9 percent!

“Our top student, Lukhanyo Velelo,achieved unbelievable results with 89 per-cent for mathematics, 85 percent for physicalscience, 87 percent for life sciences, 85 per-cent for computers and technology, 92 per-cent for life orientation and 79 percent forboth Xhosa and English.

“Such a pity he missed a full house by twomarks! I think he should apply for a re-mark!Not only that but nine of the 10 learners whofailed, qualified for supplementaries so therewas only one all-out failure!”

One need only look at all the exclamationmarks in Rowley’s email to see what itmeans to the property group.

The ecstatic Rowley exclaims: “Weachieved 19 Bachelors (university passes)and 37 Diplomas (technikon passes). Thatgives us a total of 56 tertiary education pass-es against 14 in total in 2010!”

According to Rowley, the majority ofmarks in 2010 were below 50 percent, but avast improvement in 2011 saw 14 distinc-tions, 66 Bs, 111 Cs and 114 Ds.

Rabie initially concentrated on providingthe school with a science and computer labo-ratory, but they quickly realised that in or-der to make a sustainable difference, theywould have to look at improving the stand-ard of education as well.

The SMILE (St Mary’s Interactive Learn-ing Experience) programme was introducedto improve the English of pupils and teach-ers and a “top-notch” mathematics and sci-ence teacher, Pam Robertson, was appoint-ed.

Then in 2011, five additional maths, sci-ence and English teachers completed theteam.

These interventions, coupled with ex-tremely hard work from the school, the prin-cipal (Khuselwa Nopote), teachers and pu-pils are certainly reaping the benefits.

Rowley concludes emphatically: “We areimmensely proud of Sinenjongo and whathas been achieved there in recent years withhard work and commitment from the educa-tion department, the school, the parents and

the five additional teachers that Rabie spon-sored in recent years.

“Our heartfelt congratulations to them all!It proves what can be done if the public andprivate sector work together to improve thequality of education in this country!”

Meanwhile, Milnerton High School achie-veda 100percent pass rate for the eighthyearin succession.

The principal, Paul Besener is unsurpri-singly very happy with the results, which heattributes to his staff.

“A good school rise and fall on their staffonly,” he says, before adding that it goes wit-hout saying that they will be aiming for 100percent in 2012 as well.

Brandon Wakefield and David Smith re-ceived six distinctions each.

Sinenjongo High School’s principal, Khuselwa Nopote, with the school’s top matriculant, Lukha­nyo Velelo.

Daar is steeds dinge soos kor-rupsie en misdaad en werkloos-heid wat mense moedeloos en selfsbang maak. En dalk het jy ook ge-hoor dat die einde van wêreld hier-die jaar (volgens die Maja-kalen-der) op 21 of 23 Desember aan-breek.

Kan ’n mens dus werklik nog po-

sitief wees oor hierdie nuwe jaar?Die antwoord is dat jy dit absoluutkan doen. Net die feit dat jy leef,gee klaar hoop. ’n Nuwe jaar issoos ’n nuwe begin met nuwe ge-leenthede. Die belangrike ding isegter dat ons ‘n keuse het. Elkemens is geskape met ’n vrye keuse.Ons kan kies hoe ons die jaar wilaanpak: met ’n negatiewe of met ’npositiewe gesindheid.

Dit is maklik om te sê dat jy posi-tief moet wees, maar hoe doen ’nmens dit? Daar is baie manierehoe jy dit kan doen. Hier aan diebegin van die jaar wil ek net vierpraktiese riglyne vir jou gee hoeom positief in 2012 te wees:

. Leef elke oomblik met volledankbaarheid. Die kunstenaarHenri Matisse het gesê: “Daar isaltyd blomme vir diegene wat ditgraagwil sien.”Al sal dit partydae

moeilik gaan, moetjy steeds die mooien goeie dinge in joulewe raaksien enwaardeer.

. Leef met hu-mor. Lag elke dag.Lag maak gesond.Leer om humor insituasies in te sien.Humor stimuleerdie brein en geeenergie.

. Leef gesond. Oe-fen en eet reg enhandhaaf gesondegewoontes.

. Leer om te gee. Verander van“ek wil hê” na “ek wil gee”.

’n Mens moet egter ook realis-ties wees. Daar sal in hierdie jaarook negatiewe dinge en teleurstel-lings oor ons pad kom. Hoe moet

jy hierdie negatie-we dinge en teleur-stellings hanteerwanneer jy daar-mee gekonfronteerword?

Dis belangrik omte onthou dat die le-we aan ’n mens met’n hand met kaarteuitgedeel word. Dithelp nie om daar-oor te kla nie en temor waarom dit ofdat met jou moesgebeur het nie. Jymoet speel met die

kaarte in jou hand. Aanvaar diekaarte en doen die beste met ditwat aan jou uitgedeel is. Wees rea-listies en weet slegte dinge kan ge-beur. Jy is nie onaantasbaar teendie aanslae van die lewe nie. Jy is

kwesbaar en sal in hierdie lewe te-leurstellings ervaar, soos enigeander mens. Hier is vier praktiesedinge wat jy kan doen om teleur-stellings in 2012 te hanteer:

. Gee jouself tyd en ruimte omdeur jou teleurstelling te werk.

. Gesels met mense om perspek-tief op die saak te kry.

. Jy kan in skuldgevoelens enin selfverwyt verval. Klim vinnigdaaruit. Sit dit agter jou. Onthouegter altyd die les wat jy geleer het.

. Onthou: wanneer een deurtoegaan, kan ’n tweede oopgaanwat veel beter geleenthede aan joubied. Moenie te lank in sak en assit nie, want dan kan ’n nuwe ge-leentheid by jou verbygaan.

OptiFit and the Sports Science Institute of SAare offering a new programme for those wish-ing to improve their running performance.

The programme lasts 12 weeks for thosewishing to run 10km and a further eight weeksfor those wishing to progress to 21,1km.

Iris House enjoys picnicCHILTON MELLEM

Children from Iris House Children’s Hos-pice were treated to a day of fun at theMontrose Riding School on the De Gren-del Wine Farm for their end of year pic-nic.

The spoiling was not lim-ited to the children withspecial needs only; theirfamilies were also made tofeel special. Parents weretreated to their own picnicbasket filled with goodies.An additional table was setaside and boasted deliciousChristmas meals such asturkey, gammon, coldmeats and cake.

Children were enter-tained further by A Cat ina Hat and clowns. FatherChristmas made a surpriseturn to give children andtheir parents gifts, makingsure not to exclude anyone.

“We want it to be a familyday and not leave anyoneout,” Said Sue van derLinde, founder of IrisHouse.

The children of IrisHouse were given the op-portunity to experienceequine (horse) therapy.With this therapy children get to bond withthese majestic creatures. According to Vander Linde, the children took well to the thera-py and had a positive response.

“The effect the horses had on the childrenwas remarkable. Each child thoroughly en-joyed their ride,” said Van der Linde.

Iris House is in the process of finding aplace where they can operate. At the mo-ment, they visit the homes of the children

and their families and spend up to four hourswith them. In this time, they give the chil-dren attention which includes play therapy,giving them their medication and takingcare of their personal needs.

Iris House is just under a year old and con-

sists of three helpers who volunteer theirtime to children with special needs.

Their services are provided free of chargeand give parents with these children achance to rest.

Volunteers are in demand at Iris House asthey extend their help to more and more fam-ilies. They are prepared to give anyone thenecessary training to assist children. Con-tact Sue van der Linde on 021 559 0800.

“Remember not to brake,”says a friend before he accel-erates innocently down theCool Runnings Toboggancourse in Durbanville.

As per instruction, this inex-perienced tobogganist leans in-to the first turn with surprisingease.

“This isn’t so difficult,”laughs the rookie as he foolish-ly tempts fate.

He shoots through the secondturn at 30km/h, but he is con-vinced that he is about to breakthe sound barrier.

When he reaches 40km/h italmost feels like he’s travellingback in time it’s so quick.

He might have applied thebrakes a couple of times, but henonetheless feels likehe just seta land speed record.

His friend,who started 10 sec-onds before him, just shook hishead while he waited patientlyat the bottom for the tardy to-bogganist.

Almost anyone can tobogganat their own pace, but the realrush comes from pushing theenvelope.

Arnold laughs shyly when hehears the others say that he’sthe quickest.

Voorlopige resultate van die Eksa-menraad vir Christelike Onderwys(ERCO), toon dat ongeveer 500 bonafide-tuisleerders die eksamen ge-skryf het en ’n slaagsyfer van onge-veer 93% behaal het. Van die kandi-date wat geslaag het, het ongeveer63% met universiteitsvrystelling ge-slaag.

wyskonsultant wat in tuisonderwysspesialiseer, sê dat die uitstekendeakademiese, sosiale en persoonlikeontwikkeling van tuisleerders inSuid-Afrika ooreenstem met resulta-te wat tuisleerders in ander landeverkry volgens onafhanklike navor-sing oor verskeie dekades.

Hy het egter daarop gewys dathierdie kandidate vele burokratiesestruikelblokke moes oorkom net omdie eksamen enigsins te skryf. VanOostrum voer aan dat die nuwe nasi-onale senior sertifikaat ontwerp is

om voltydse leerders in skole te be-voordeel. Die aard van die eksamenmaak dit baie duur en amper on-moontlik vir onafhanklike en af-standleerders om te voldoen aan dieburokratiese eise wat die nuwe eksa-men stel. Daarbenewens aanvaar dieeksamenrade van staatsdepartemen-te nie meer onafhanklike kandidatetensy hulle onder die mantel van sko-le ingesmokkel word nie.

Dit beteken dat die matrieksertifi-kaat, wat tot vyf jaar gelede vir somin as R1 000 geskryf kon word, nou

Pa, seuns pak avontuurrit aan’n Eversdal-pa en sy drie seunshet onlangs die Trans Agulhas-uitdaging vir rubberbote aange-pak – ’n ervaring wat hulle as on-vergeetlik beskryf.

Christie Kriel en sy seun, Christi-an (20), het die uitdaging saam aan-gedurf, terwyl nóg twee van syseuns, Wardo (18) en Marco (16), diewater saam-saam op ’n rubberbootgetrotseer het.

Dié vier Kriel-mans het aan dieuitdaging deelgeneem onder die

naam van die Welverdiend-aftree-oord, ’n oord in Bellville wat on-langs sy deure geopen het.

Dirk Streicher, ontwikkelaar vandie oord, het die twee bote geborg.

Vanjaar was die 16de keer watChristie aan die Trans Agulhas-uit-daging deelgeneem het.

Dirk sê inwoners van die aftree-oord was ongelooflik opgewondeoor die uitdaging wat die pa enseuns aangepak het.

Die Kriels en inwoners van die af-tree-oord het mekaar kort voor die

uitdaging ontmoet, toe die pa enseuns ’n draai gemaak het by die af-tree-oord waar die bote met grootbelangstelling ondersoek is.

Die Kriels self was opgewonde,maar ook ’n bietjie bekommerd oordie watertoestande.

“Ons het vooraf gewonder of diewater baie rof gaan wees. Dit wastoe die geval, maar toe ons eers be-gin was alles reg,” sê Christie.

“Jy weet die water is rof en jygáán seerkry,” sê Wardo. Christi-aan voeg by: “Dit is soos voor ’n rug-

bywedstryd – al weet jy jy is goedvoorbereid, is jy steeds senuweeag-tig.”

Vir Marco, die jongste, was diéuitdaging ’n eerste, maar Christianen Wardo het al in die verlede saammet hul pa deelgeneem.

Vooraf het die vierstuks intensiefvoorberei, want dit is belangrik om“bootfiks” te wees, sê Christie.

Twee maande voor die uitdaginghet hulle elke naweek drie ure inMelkbos gaan oefen en hulle laasteoefenlopie was in Franskraal, waardie laaste skof van die uitdagingplaasgevind het.

Christie se vrou, Tania, en die eg-paar se twee jongste seuns, Rudi enTerblanche, was deel van die onder-steuningspan op land.

Op die vierde dag van die vyfdag-

uitdaging het Christie en Marco seboot probleme gegee, toe die enjinse hegstukke onklaar geraak het. Indaardie stadium was hulle tweedein hul klas.

Christie sê hy was nog al die jarelief vir die see.

“Jare gelede het ek en ’n vriendsaam aan dié uitdaging deelge-neem, maar toe my kinders ouerword het ek saam met hulle beginry,” sê hy.

Dirk sê die opgewondenheid bydie aftree-oord, voor die uitdaging,was tasbaar.

“Die inwoners het gereeld gebelom te hoor wat by die uitdaging ge-beur,” sê hy.

“Dalk skryf ons volgende jaar ’nspan van die aftree-oord in,” lagChristie.

Matrics do well,but the future?The Western Cape matric class of 2011 hasdone us proud. The province not onlyachieved the best matric pass rate in thecountry, SouthAfrica’s topmatriculant al-so hails from this province.

Kudos too to the Western Cape educa-tion minister, the education departmentand all the other role players who contrib-uted to the province improving its 2010pass rate of 76,8 percent to 82,9 percent.

Another group of people that deserves amention in this success story is the par-ents. Despite the fact that many of themstruggled financially, they still supportedtheir children emotionally and financial-ly. They were willing to make sacrifices inorder to enrol their children at schoolswith a good academic record. Many ofthem spent hundreds of rands each monthon extra classes.

The challenge is now to get all schools,even those in impoverished areas, to pro-duce the same results.

The department of basic education’s de-cision to restrict Model C schools frompaying teacher bonuses and other finan-cial incentives will further weaken the al-ready struggling public education system.

It would be no surprise if some of theseteachers leave the public schools to jointhe private schools where they’ll at leastreceive the recognition – and pay – theydeserve.

The reply from Rene from AACL wasshocking. So what if people get “angry”knowing the figures! It’s about the ani-mals. No, it won’t solve the problem butit will make it better by preventing somepeople from deciding to breed (which isthe cause of the problem in the first place).

I volunteered at a shelter for years. Itdid upset me when an animal got eutha-nised, but because I was aware of thisproblem, I understood and did not judgethe shelter.

It is better than to let animals suffer inthe street because we are running out ofplaces for them.

Before you decide to breed your animal,do yourself a favour and see how many ofthose specific animals are already in theshelters. You’ll be shocked.

There are even rescue “groups” for spe-cific breeds. (eg: border collie rescue andmany many more). Rather adopt an ani-mal from these places than from a breederor someone’s house, encouraging them tobreed further.

Also do your research on the type of dogthat you are interested in, to make surethat he is the best option for you and thatyou can supply him with what his specificbreed requires. So called “pavement spe-cials” are still the best breeds with theleast health issues.

In ag geneem al die negatiewe omstandig-hede waarin hierdie mense werk, elke dag,met siek mense, sommige ongeneesbaar, res-pekteer ek elke sekonde van hulle werk.

Ek het nie besef en sou seker nooit, as ditnie vir die diagnosering van my suster sebaarmoederkanker was nie, geweet het wat-ter taak regtig op hierdie dokters se skouersrus nie.

Dit is mense wat hulle “alles” gee om hullepasiënte gemaklik, waardig en spesiaal telaat voel. Mense wat hulle eie “probleme” enselfs hulle eie “siektes of gebreke” opsy skuifsodat hulle net hulle “onbaatsugtige werk”kan verrig.

Sou jy daar tussen die pasiënte verkeer,sien jy glimlagte en vriendelike gesigte.Orals word geselsies aangekoop, menseword op hulle name genoem, niemand is net’n “nommer” nie.

Dit is heel anders as wat ek verwag het toe

ons verneem het dat my suster vir vyf wekebestraling moes ontvang. Net die gedagte al-leen van bestraling en “chemo” is kommer-wekkend, maar glo my, die atmosfeer by diehospitaal maak dit ’n nimmervresende ge-beurtenis. My suster se kanker is 100% ge-nees in hierdie vyf weke van bestraling. Hal-leluja!

Ons wil ook ons dank betuig aan die gine-koloë, dokters en personeel by Karl Bremer-hospitaal, wat so flink en spoedig opgetreehet met die ontdekking van die kanker en diemanier waarop hulle ons die “slegte nuus”meegedeel het.

Baie dankie, julle het ons so mooi gehelpen dit word regtig waardeer.

Ons wil net vir elkeen van hierdie mensesê dat hulle werk nie ongesiens verbygaannie. Daar is ongetwyfeld baie mense wat nesons voel, maar ook nie weet hoe om regtig“dankie” te sê en dié waardering uit tespreek nie.

Drs. Eksteen en Geyser, julle is uitstekenden is ’n voorbeeld vir soveel selfsugtige men-se.

Compost still the bestJILL PEPER

Compost is not something thatcomes up generally in normalconversation – apart from as afour-letter word! At StanlerFarms, the home of Super Growfertiliser, however – “composthappens”!

Here it is spoken of with convic-tion and passion. In a world of sani-tised soaps and cleaners (as adver-tised extensively on TV), bacteriahave received a bad rap. Bill Brys-on, however, in “A Short History ofNearly Everything” speaks aboutthe essential role that bacteria playin sustaining life on earth.

In the words of Peter Stanton, theCEO of this nationwide business –“Here we actually sell bacteria and

fungi” – and sports fields, schools,golf courses, farms and gardens arethe richer for it!

Stanler Farms came about as a re-sult of the largest mushroom pro-ducers in South Africa needing anoutlet for their spent compost.

Spent mushroom compost is highin phosphates, nitrogen and potas-sium and contains important micronutrients. (For a full analysis go tothe website www.compost.co.za.)

This by-product is used by Stan-ler Farms either as the base of theother Stanler Farms products, or inits original composition as mush-room compost. As a result, theircompost has a rich and consistentnutrient content.

In much the same way as the hu-man body needs to be supplementedwith minerals and vitamins which

are depleted through bad eatinghabits, so the soil in our gardensneeds to be fed with good organicmatter containing micro-organ-isms to help keep plants healthy.

This does not apply only to vege-table gardens, where beautiful or-ganic products will result, but it isalso vital throughout the garden.

Previously it was believed thatcompost should be tilled into theground in order to be the most effec-tive.

The latest thinking around theworld is to use compost as mulch ontop of the soil, which allows the mi-cro-organisms to seep into theground when watered.

Not all rockers are ‘dark characters’LOUISA STEYL

“Our music will be listenable fora long time.”

So says Adam van der Reit,rhythm guitarist, songwriter andengineer for The Summer Under-ground.

With a new lead vocalist in War-ren Alexander, and guitarist, LukeRevington, added to the mix, thisNorthern Suburbs band has under-gone a transformation of sorts.

The rest of The Summer Under-ground is made up of Adrian Lan-geveld on drums, percussion andkeyboards, Brett Reynolds on bassand Sean Schwartz as sound engi-neer.

The band has been playing withthe current line-up for a year, butThe Summer Underground hasbeen around since 2009.

Adam explains that he was of-fered an opportunity to write some

songs for payment, so he put a bandtogether to play the songs.

“It started as a professional stu-dio project that took on a life of itsown,” Adam says.

The band believes that a goodname is essential.

Brett explains that The SummerUndergroundrefers to “the title giv-en to thenotionof not enjoying lightand heat”.

“It was a quip that the previousvocalist came up with,” he says.

The name plays on the stereotypeof “rockers” being dark charactersand as Adam points out: “It doesn’tsound like a normal band name.”

“It’s hard rock ’n roll,” Warrensays of their music.

“It’s ‘kinda’ like the 90s heyday,”Adrian adds.

He says when Warren and Luke

joined the band, they also reinvig-orated it. “Very quickly it gelledvery nicely,” Adrian says.

Adam points out that some songshad to be rewritten to suit male vo-cals instead of their usual femalevocalist.

“It was a rebirth of sorts,” hesays.

Thebandagrees that therewasal-so a new enthusiasm in the group.

“Overall we are a more organisedunit,” Brett states. Before, therewere questions within the groupabout commitment to the band, butBrett says: “The current line-up ischanging all of that.”

The band’s performance at Rockthe River over New Year’s was fullof this new energy.

The band has just finished re-cording their EP, and they have anew album in the works.

“Adam is the band’s primarysongwriter,” Adrian says.

He comes up with the music anddigital phrases, before the songs arehammered into shape, knitting inthe drum line and bass.

With influences that range fromearly rock pioneers, like Black Sab-bath, to the other extreme, like 80sand electronic music, you can ex-pect interesting sounds from thisband.

Race brings in funds for ShilohLocal charity organisation ShilohSynergy was the beneficiary ofGrowthpoint Properties’ Sun-downer 10km walk/run that tookplace along one of South Africa’smost beautiful shorelines, start-ing and finishing at the V&A Wa-terfront recently.

A total of 2 634 participants fin-ished the race and a cheque ofR2 500 was handed over to Shiloh.

Shiloh Synergy is a group ofprojects based on Biblical princi-ples and committed towards thegenuine needs of people, animalsand the environment. Shiloh’smain concern is the upliftmentand providing assistance to chil-dren and people who are in need.

The first male home, Sityhilo Diko, finished in a time of 30:26.

Bing takes title in all­action SUPA record number of entries marked thefourth Coreban Summer Series for StandUp Paddlers (SUP), held at Bloubergstrandrecently.

The threedays of competition in the surf sla-lom, wave riding and long distance racing re-sulted in non-stop action.

This year’s event saw the largest field ofSUP entrants in Africa with over 100 entrantsranging from seven-year-old Cameron Trip-ney in the children’s division to novice menand women divisions, the highly contestedjunior division, legends (over 45) and openmen and women divisions.

The contest was held in three days of perfectweather starting with the slalom event.

A rise in swell on the second day saw organ-isers make the call for wave riding.

“The standard of SUP was pushed to a newlevel as riders displayed moves yet to benamed. The Beach Religion Expression ses-sion saw tandem riding as male with femaleriders took on the surf to display true ‘aloha’spirit,” said organiser Ivan van Vuuren.

The third and final day was quite easily themost action-packed SUP day Africa has everseen.

With the wind subsiding paddlers had toprepare for the 7,5km distance racing around

the islands at Big Bay.The start of the race saw the set of the day

come through causing many athletes to imme-diately be eliminated while top riders navigat-ed their way through the surf.

An error in judgement saw Dylan Frick,Greg Bertish and Colin Heckroodt, who whereall three in line for overall first place positionleading the pack, take the wrong course open-ing up the field and allowing Peter Petersonand others to sneak through into top position.

With long distance out of the way, it wastime for the surf slalom finals, once againthrough the larger surf. Chris Bertish, deter-mined to make up for his earlier mistake, tooktop line honours. As the swell continued topush through, the final rounds of the wave rid-ing went into full swing – Tom King-Kleinhansdisplayed true surfing while Justin Bing andDylan Frick displayed new school manoeu-vres. Justin Bing snuck in a few extra moveswinning the wave riding discipline.

In the end it was Justin Bing who walkedaway with the 2011 Men’s Open title while Ka-rina Figl, who showed top form in all three dis-ciplines, finished first overall in the Ladies’Open division.

Justin Bing won the 2011 Coreban Stand Up Paddling Summer Series that was held at BigBay in December.

An Epic battle for survivor

Ernst Viljoen will be paired with Elana Meyer during the Absa Cape Epic.

Local Bellville resident, Ernst Viljoen, iscurrently undergoing strict training andpreparation to ride the 2012 Absa CapeEpic in celebration of his recent success-ful recovery from prostate cancer.

This will be his fourth entry in the annualrace in the Western Cape and he will devotehis participation to those suffering from can-cer and to raise awareness and funding forCansa.

As a Team Absa rider, Absa will generous-ly donate R1 300 to the organisation for everystage of the race that Viljoen completes – apotential total of R9 100 for his efforts.

“Thankfully, the disease was diagnosed atan early stage and I was able to beat the can-cer,” says Viljoen. “I am extremely thankfulthat I can get back on my bike and ride again,and enjoy the sport which I have been doingfor most of my life. It is not something I takefor granted.”

Viljoen has been active in the sport of cy-cling for the past 44 years and made a seriousconversion tomountainbiking in 2006,whenAbsa – his then employer – became the titlesponsor of the Absa Cape Epic.

He has since retired from his banking ca-reer of 28 years and is currently a lecturerin financial management at a private collegein Cape Town.

Viljoen has also completed the Bike Trans-Alp in 2007 and has 20 Cape Argus Pick n PayCycle Tour rides to his name so far.

Diagnosed with prostate cancer in Decem-ber 2010, Viljoen opted for a brachytherapy– the procedure was scheduled for April 2011allowing him to attend his son’s weddingand complete the 2011 Absa Cape Epic inMarch 2011.

This year Viljoen will be paired with TeamAbsa partner and Olympic silver medallist,Elana Meyer, and their training is alreadywell under way.

Viljoen will also serve as manager forTeam Absa. The team includes rugby legend

Joel Stransky and model Vanessa Haywood.The Absa Cape Epic will take place from

25 March to 1 April 2012.
