hede by ’n ander vulstasie ingegooi en grootwas my verbasing toe die tenk net 46 literkon vat,” sê Viljoen.Om uit te vind hoekom hy dan elke keer

The investigation into Serendipity House,a home for the elderly in Panorama where18 residents have died since June, is pro-gressing slowly.This is according to Pat Lindgren of Acti-

A new multi-million rand radial angiogra-phy centre at TygerbergHospitalwill securelife savingmedical treatment to disadvanta-ged patients with heart ailments.

“In South Africa, over 50 000 patients an-nually require advanced cardiac care. Yet,many don’t have access to these proceduresand are therefore denied potentially life-sa-ving treatments such as coronary stents.This centre at the division of cardiology willsee a significant increase in the number ofpatients we are able to treat,” says ProfessorAntonDoubell, head of the cardiology divisi-on and director of Sunheart, a newly esta-blished, not-for-profit foundation that stri-ves for equal access to advanced cardiac carefor all patients.

Radial angiography allows patients to ha-ve coronary angiography and interventions,including stent placement, by accessing asmall blood vessel in the arm rather thanha-ving to puncture the large blood vessels inthe groin. This improvement on the stan-dard approach has increased the safety of

the procedure and the comfort of the patient.The new radial centre will allow patients tobe admitted anddischarged on the sameday.

“Not only arewe looking at ‘business classcoronary intervention’ in a state-of-the-artfacility, but radial angiography and stentingthrough our radial suite will significantlyreduce the need for an overnight hospitalstay,” says Doubell.

This ground-breaking service will allevia-te cardiac care bottle-necks and set the tonefor others in Africa to follow.

The centre, a first in Africa, launched on10 November.

die vinger te wys na tehuise vir bejaar-des as die groot sondaars. Die meerder-heid sulke instellings versorg oumensemet deernis en empatie.Maar die kinders van bejaardes moet

beslis ook tot verantwoording geroepword. Dis is juis hulle wat meestal dierug draai op diegene wat hulle met liefdegrootgemaak het. Om jou bejaarde ouerbloot te gaan “wegbêre en van hom/haarte vergeet” in ’n tehuis, is heel moontlikdie grootste onreg wat jy teenoor diemensdom kan pleeg.Bejaardes oorleef op liefde en aandag

Paws from all over Cape Town will co-me together on Sunday 7 December inthe biggest family dog-walk to hit the

suburban streets.It’s the 21st SPCA MySchool MyVillage

MyPlanet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon.The 4,5 km charity dog-walk takes place

at the Cape Academy of Maths and Scienceon the Corner of Firgrove Way and Spaans-gemacht River Road, Constantia, at 09:00.Soli Philander will be the MC for the day.

This hugely popular event supports thework of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA(CoGH SPCA) and last year saw 1600 wal-kers and 1100 dogs strut their stuff in theSociety’s aid.

“The Wiggle Waggle is possibly the mostloved event on the Cape of Good HopeSPCA’s fundraising calendar – and peopletravel from far and wide just to take part,”said event organiser, Juan August.

All funds raised from entries will go di-rectly to helping the SPCA prevent animalcruelty during the upcoming festive sea-son.

Money spinner“For the last 17 years, MySchool MyVilla-

ge MyPlanet has been working with schoolsand charities, helping them raise funds fortheir various causes,” Juan said.

gram, wat in Brackenfell sal plaas-vind, word tans beplan ten einde ’n

persentasie van die gerehabiliteerde gevan-genes in Suid-Afrika te help om hul lewenspositief te verander, weerwerk te kry en ookuiteindelik weer suksesvol by die samele-wing in te skakel.

Aan die spits van die nuwe veldtog wat3 000 voormalige gevangenes as mentors wiloplei, is Alpha Suid-Afrika. Die veldtog salook daarop gemik wees om hierdie voorma-lige gevangenes werk te gee en met lewens-vaardighede toe te rus.

Wanneer hulle as mentors toegerus word,sal hulle ook ’n spesiale inbelsentrum kanskakel waar hulle gratis raad kan ontvang.

vangenisse in Wes-Kaapland, het gesê daarword beoog om ’n getal van 3 000 voormaligegevangenes oor die volgende agtien maandeas mentors toe te rus en te bekwaam.

Die opleidingsprogram, wat bestuur worddeur Alpha en die mentor-opleidingsorgani-sasie LifeXchange, word later vanjaar afge-skopbydieVersorg-konferensie vir voorma-lige gevangenes.

HoofsprekerPaul Cowley, uitvoerende direkteur van

die William Wilberforce-trust, sal die hoof-spreker wees by die konferensie, wat op 29November by die Heidekoppie-kerk in Brac-kenfell plaasvind.

Tans is daar 11 250 gevangenes in Suid-Afrika, wat die negende meeste ter wêreld

is.“Altesame 78% van die gevangenes wat

vrygelaatword, beland binne twee jaarweeragter tralies. Altesame 70% van die oortre-ders wat die Alpha-program volg, keer nieweer terugnadie gevangenisnie,maarwordsuksesvol by die samelewing ingeskakel,”het Truter verduidelik.

“Ons weet uit ondervinding dat ’n oplei-dingsprogramwat daarop gemik is om voor-malige gevangenes as mentors te bekwaam,die beste langtermyn-resultate waarborg.

“Hierdie oud-gevangenes sal toegerusword met lewensvaardighede. Ons sal ookprobeer om vir hierdie gevangenes werk teverskaf. Die gedagte is ommet kommersiëlevennote te skakel om aan vrygelate en gere-habiliteerde gevangenes, wat ons program-

me deurloop het, ’n kans te gee om vir hullete werk.

“Ons sal ’n CV en getuigskrif van hierdiegerehabiliteerde gevangenes aan die sake-ondernemings voorsien met wie ons ska-kel,” het Truter verduidelik.

Steun“Onsbeplanomgerehabiliteerde gevange-

nes oor ’n lang tydperk te ondersteun metbehulp van diementor-program,” het Truterverduidelik.

“Die keersy is dat gevangenes nie hulp ofwerk kry nie en sonder steun in die gemeen-skap beland. ’n Groot persentasie keer terugna die gevangenis, omdat daar nie werk, ’nmentor-program, voortgesette begeleiding,asook lewensvaardighede, is nie.”

An annual awards ceremonylast Monday honoured the pro-vince’s top nurses,with twohai-ling fromnorthern suburbs hos-pitals.

The pair represented theirdistrict at theCeciliaMakiwaneNursing Awards ceremony thatwas hosted on 10 November at

bers have anyway. Saxophonist Nick Bec-ker and frontman Riaan Smit recently re-turned from a whirlwind American adven-ture.The duo went overseas to build connecti-

ons, experience the music industries and“see if the grass is really greener”.“There’s just a lot more grass, I think,”

Riaan says.They busked wherever they could and

tried to take in the lifestyle in New York,San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco andNew Orleans, amongst other places.

Price of a beerA highlight for Nick and Riaan was wor-

king with Alan Sanderson, a Grammyaward winning producer and engineerknown for his work with the likes of B.BKing and The Rolling Stones, and all it costthem was a Tafel Lager.“He really lovesNamibia and beer and re-

ally wanted to meet us,” explains Riaan,who is a Namibian.Despite only having 14 shows lined up

when theywent over, the two endedupplay-ing more than 50 across the states.Riaan says musicians in America earn

on stage after a song and I couldn’t believewhere I’m standing, because I completelywent into another world, that is special.”Because of its rich history, Riaan says

blues is a difficult genre to pin point. Usingthe Blues Summit as an example, he sayseveryone has a different interpretation andstyle of playing.“Each performance is different,” Nick

“Ek reken die sukses wat ons tot dusvergehad het, is dat ons met o.10- en o.11-spannebegin het. Toutrek neem drie jaar voordat jyregtig begin presteer.
