    N n afwesigheid van sowat 15

jaar het 9 aktiewe nuwe buurt-

    wagte in Brackenfell reeds n

    verskil gemaak aan die oorlog

    teen misdaad.

Die eerste van di buurtwagte is

in Januarie vanjaar op die been ge-

    bring nadat die gemeenskap van

    Morgenster besef het misdaad is

    aan die toeneem en gemeenskaps-

    betrokkendheid is broodnodig.

    Sedertdien het agt ander buurte

    hul voorbeeld gevolg.

    Buurtwagte is besig omvankrag

tot krag te gaan en die gemeenskap,

sowel as ondernemings, is al hoe

Erica Crous, poli-

    siewoordvoerder.

    Volgens kol. Willie Joseph, sta-

    siebevelvoerder, het die verwikke-

linge gesorg vir n nuwe bedeling in

    Brackenfell, waar die gemeenskap

baie meer vertroue in die polisie

    het.

    Ons het gevind die gemeen-

    skapslede wat by die buurtwagte

    aangesluit het, wil n daadwerklike

    verskil in hul onmiddellike omge-

    wings maak, s hy.

    Daarbenewens het die misdaad-

    tendense ook verbeter.

    Uit n statistiese misdaadoog-

punt kan mens beslis n verskil op-

    merk, voeg hy by.

    nBuurtwag is nburgerlike orga-

    nisasie van inwonerswat ooreenge-

kom het om as n georganiseerde

liggaam as waghond vir die poli-

    sie te dien.

Volgens Joseph is di konsep van

    gemeenskapspolisiring in polisie-

    wetgewing ingeskryf.

    n Buurtwagmoet by die plaasli-

    ke subforum van die gemeenskaps-

    polisieforum (GPF) registreer, wat

die buurtwag dan by die GPF sal

ners te bevorder en om deur patrol-

lering, en soms bloot deur bedag te

    wees op kriminele aktiwiteite, die

polisie in kennis te stel en ophoogte

    te hou van verdagte aktiwiteite.

Die GPF is die spreekbuis van

die gemeenskap en speel dus n baie

    belangrike rol in die verhouding

tussen die polisie en die gemeen-

    skap, s Joseph.

    beaam Leon Brynard, GPF-voorsitter.

    n Gesamentlike optrede deur die

    buurtwagte, polisie, verkeer enmetropo-

lisie het ook in Augustus vanjaar gesorg

vir groter bewusmaking by die buurt-

    waglede.

bestuur. Vir die meeste van die buurt-

waglede wat die aand betrokke was, was

    die wetteloosheid n groot ontnugte-

ring, s hy. Die buurtwagte se hand is

verder verlede week versterk deur n

    plaaslike onderneming, Masiqhame

Elke

    buurtwagvoorsitter, asook elke sektorbevel-

voerder, het sy eie handradio gekry. Een ba-

sisstel sal by die polisiestasie genstalleer

    diens is.

teahoogte. Daar sal gefokus word op die

omgewings van De Oude Spruit en Son-

    kring.

Alle inwoners in die gebiede wat be-

langstel om aan te sluit, kan Eugene

    Louw by 072 984 4116 kontak.

sitter), J.J. Smith (nasionale operasionele bestuurder:

Masiqhame Communications) en Phillip van der Riel

    (Morgensterbuurtwag se voorsitter).

    n Gesin van Vredekloofhoogte was

    vroer vandeesweek baie gelukkig om

ongedeerd van n huisroof af te kom.

Die voorval het verlede Maandag 10 Sep-

    tember omstreeks 20:00 plaasgevind.

Volgens inligting was die eienaar van die

huis saam met n vriend besig met werk in

    sy motorhuis.

Vier onbekende gewapende mans het die

motorhuis binnegekom en gevra vir wapens

en geld. Die verdagtes het die motorhuis se

deur toegemaak en het die huis binnege-

gaan, s ao. Erica Crous van die Bracken-

    fell-polisie.

Die eienaar se vrou en twee kinders was

ook in die huis. Die verdagtes het almal vas-

gebind.

    voertuig is Vrydagoggend inMitchells Plain

    aangetref.

tye gesluit is. As jy buite jou woning is, wees

bewus van wat om jou aangaan. Rapporteer

onmiddellik enige verdagte persone of voer-

    tuie.Moeniehuiweromdadelikdie plaaslike

    polisiekantoor te kontaknie. Die sektorvoer-

tuie kan ook direk gekontak word.

Sy moedig die gemeenskap aan om GPF-

vergaderings by te woon om sodoende op

A gang of five armed robbers got away with

cigarettes and money to the value of R90 000,

after a robbery in Northpine last Tuesday eve-

    ning.

According to Capt Gerhard Niemand of the

Kraaifontein police the five unknown men ap-

proached the Northpine Supermarket on foot

as the manager came out at about 21:15 to lock

    up the shop.

They forced him back in to the shop and

held himat gunpoint, asking for cigarettes and

money. They then left on foot, but we suspect

that the get-away vehicle could have been par-

ked a block or two away, says Niemand.

No arrests have been made yet.

    DESIRE RORKE

To produce learners with skills in engi-

neering is very valuable to South Africa,

as it is a key driver for human develop-

ment, said Minister of Education in the

    Western Cape Donald Grant.

Without these skills, alreadya rarity inAf-

rica, African nations will be unable to devel-

    op crucial infrastructure without outside

    aid, he added.

    Grant visited the Northpine Technical

High School on Friday evening, for its offi-

    cial opening.

The need for such a school was brought to

Grants attention in 2009, by the Old Paarl

    Technical High School Steering Committee,

an action group consisting of several role-

    players in the community.

The nearest technical high school was

Bellville Tech, which as explained by the

committee, was in terms of travel too far for

those learners who wished to pursue a tech-

    nical study field, he explained.

After an audit of the provinces infrastruc-

ture needs, the Western Cape Education De-

partment approved the building of the new

technical high school in Northpine, which

commenced in the second half of 2010.

Technical schools such as this are ex-

tremely valuable to this government. They

    provide important educational opportuni-

ties for learners who want to study in fields

such as mechanical technology and engi-

neering and are key to developing skills in

    the Western Cape.

Northpine Technical High is one of five

technical high schools in the province.

The other four are Delft Technical HS,

    OudeMolen, Belville and Drostdy Technical

High School. Each of these schools specialis-

es in technical subjects such as mechanical

    technology; electrical technology; civil tech-

nology; engineering, graphics and design, as

    well as mathematics and science.

According to Grant, the attainment of

    many of theMillenniumDevelopment Goals

for example requires the achievement of suf-

ficient engineering capacity to develop in-

    frastructure and sustainable technological

    development.

We certainly cant progress as a province

if we do not have the requisite engineering

    skills, he said.

Grant commented on the unique design of

the school, saying that it is in itself an engi-

    neering feat.

For example, they designed the school as

a citadel similar to an enclosed city with a

single gated entry, to address security con-

cerns and to create a safe, defensible space

    which is alsoprotected fromtheharsh south-

    easterly summer winds.

The hall and the administration block

were positioned within the perimeter of the

    classroom blocks to minimise circulation

and the distinct roofscape allows rainwater

to be discharged into water tanks which are

to be utilised to irrigate sports fields and

    food gardens.

    Grant said that architects, Mey-

er&Vorster, succeeded in their brief to pro-

vide a high quality, low maintenance, sus-

tainable public building, adding that it was

also the first school in South Africa to

achieve a four start green rating.

He furthermore referred to the very rare

protea, the Blushing Bride growing on the

    school grounds.

This plant, the last of its species growing

in the wild, was found on site during con-

    struction.

A 5 000m section of this site has been

    fencedoff to ensure this iconicSouthAfrican

    flower continues to flourish.

What I ask of this school community is

to protect this school as you do this very rare

    plant, he said.

The school opened its doors for Grade 8

and 9 learners in January of this year, and

will enrol its first Grades 10s in 2013.

    Tech school a triumph

Minister Donald Grant and district directorMelvyn Caroline on a site visit during the constructi

on of the school last year.

    ACHMAT EBRAHIM

    STADSBESTUURDER

Retail therapy is supposed to be

    shopping with the primary pur-

    pose of improving the buyersmood

or disposition. Actually it is a psy-

    chological disorder called onioma-

    nia or compulsive shopping dis-

    order, according to researchers at

    MelbourneUniversity inAustralia.

Some idea of the seriousness of the

condition can be gauged froma 2001

    study by the European Union

which found that 33 % of shoppers

have a high level of addiction to

    rashorunnecessary consumption.

    Further evidence of the affliction

can be seen in the increasing inci-

dence of obesity which also results

    from rash or unnecessary con-

    sumption.The challenge for the re-

tail industry is to find ways to in-

    crease the number of oniomanicas

and to make sure they are not

cured. One third of customers mak-

    ing unnecessary purchases certain-

ly helps the turnover, but imagine

the effect on the bottom line if the

    percentage of those with compul-

    sive shopping disorder could be

pushed up to, say, 50 or even 60 %?

To do this the managers of super-

markets have devised a number of

ways to keep shoppers in the store

and exposed to temptation for as

    long as possible while promoting

    the fiction of quick shopping.

The favourite trick is to put the

newest, slowest cashiers on the ex-

press tills to frustrate those healthy

    customers purchasing 10 items or

less. Shoppers in a hurry have al-

ready learned that it is better to join

    the trolley-pushers in the long

    queues because they move faster

    throughmore tills manned bymore

efficient staff. But it is a trap set for

    those suffering from compulsive

    shopping disorder. Store managers

know that the main impulse pur-

    chases are sweets, chips, soft

    drinks, chocolates and magazines.

They have also noticed that smart

    shoppers like women with small

children know how to avoid the

    aisleswhere these temptinggoodies

    are on display.

    So, to dealwith theonio-

    maniacs and take revenge

    on the smart shoppers,

    they have created, in the

    name of improved serv-

    ice, a new system which

    funnels customers

    through a single queue to-

    wards a battery of tills.

    The system produces nice

    long queues and the

    stores take advantage by

    lining the route with

    shelves stacked with sweets, cool

    drinks, chips, chocolates (the im-

    ported, high-mark-up kinds), nuts

    and other tempting treats you

avoided in the store. Pity the young

    mother trying to drag

    two screaming pre-

    schoolers through this

    valley of temptation! She

    really has no option but

    to bribe the little mon-

    sters with sweet things.

    And so the young are

    corrupted while the re-

solve of those on diet is

    sabotaged and the health

    of the nation is under-

    mined. Is it any wonder

that the world has an obesity prob-

lem? But, hey, the disease is good

for the bottom line and what could

    be more important than that?

Big people better for a stores bottom line

    TANDY-LEE MARINUS

    AND DESIRE RORKE

The ducks being removed from the De

Oude Spruit dam in Brackenfell, has left

bitter emotions with local residents feel-

ing that a part of their community is be-

    ing taken away.

There is no need to remove them, said

Gertie Joubert from Kuils River, who often

visits the dam and has been entertained by

    the ducks.

    Although concerns about the

safety of the ducks have been

    raised because they are often

    overlooked by passing motorists

    resulting in death, complaints

    about noise have been lodged.

    Cyril van Reenen, who has

been a gardener in the area for

more than three years is onewho

is concern for the fowls safety.

    People drive over theducks in

the road. People give them old

bread and bring food and their

children to see the ducks. I know

of no complaints about the ducks

    bothering anyone.

    Yet another resident from Pro-

    teaHeights says that she rescued

some of these birds as hatchlings

and even helped to raise them.

I have always fed them and

helped when they were sick or

trapped in hooks and line. It is

    tragic that they were removed

    without consulting the communitymembers

in the area. Yes, there are people who com-

plain about them, but I believe the majority

of the community enjoys the presence of

    these birds, she says.

According to her it must have been very

traumatic for these birds to have been

trapped and caught, after they have trusted

    mankind for so long.

The City of Cape Town, however, remains

    adamant. We received many complaints

from residents in the vicinity regarding the

birds, ranging fromhigh noise levels to dam-

aged gardens and soiled patios, said Tande-

    ka Gqada, executive mayoral committee

    member for the parks department.

According to Gqada the city has a respon-

sibility to manage the high numbers of alien

bird species, which is a direct result of the

    feeding of the birds.

This high concentration of alien water

bird species, which include geese and duck,

    alsodisturbs thenatural balanceof thewater

causing fish and plants to die, she said.

The city is responsible by law to remove

birds such as Mallard to prevent interbreed-

ing with indigenous birds. After the alien

birds have been removed the indigenous

birds should return to the dams, she said.

The birds were taken to farms outside the

city where they will assist to control snails.

    Dam ducks sent

    off to catch snails

The cardboard containers in which the ducks were placed

and transported to farms outside the city.

    Energie: Dryfkrag agter Volhoubare Ontwik-

    keling.

risteroete via Simonstaduit n trein vanMetro-

    hernubare energie hou belowendemoontlikhe-

    beklemtoon.

    DESIRE RORKE

Met sy lang hare en tatoermerke is

Pierre Rossouw besig om vinnig die

harte van Suid-Afrikaners te steel op

kykNET se nuwe reeks Ons Soek Die

    Sanger.

Dis juis di andersheidwat die 26-jari-

ge boorling van Kraaifontein laat aandag

    trek.

Ek lyk soos n rocker enmense weet nie

    kaanse musiekreeks gesing.

    Eintlik n liedjieskrywer van formaat,

het Pierre al baie nommer een-treffers vir

    ander Suid-Afrikaanse sangers geskryf.

    Ekhet op sesjarige ouderdomal betrok-

ke geraak by musiek met koor en klavier-

spel, maar het eers n skool professioneel

    begin liedjies skryf, vertel hy.

    me van Cheree.

Pierre se eie unieke klank beskryf hy as

    kinderdae, eerder as liefdesliedjies.

    gepaard gaan, soos teleurstelling, hartseer

of n gemis.

reeks by GrandWest sy eie liedjie Eks-

kuus Oom gesing, waarmee hy dadelik

    baie aandag getrek het.

Select-musiek, wat n betrokke is by

ontvang, wat n platekontrak by Select-

    musiek insluit.

    oordelaars is AnnieMalan, BrandonOcto-

burg gaan plaasvind. Ons Soek die Sanger

word op Dinsdae om 17:00, Woensdae om

13:00, Donderdae om 21:00, Vrydae om

22:00 en Saterdae om 21:30 uitgesaai.

    While walking through the rows

of toys at the TheoMarais Sports

    Complex in Milnerton on Satur-

day, itwaseasy to imagine the in-

    nocent dolls studying the people

    passing by.

    Then,whenno-one iswithin ears-

hot, the model cars would rev their

engines and the tiny plastic men on

    the intricately designed plastic dis-

    play world would stretch their

backs and promptly return to their

    default position to avoid suspicion.

All this plays out in the imagina-

    tion, of course.

    Or does it?

    When TygerBurgers journalist

walked past the giant Bismarck bo-

at model, the rows of guns moved

    with him...

He turned his head in disbelief

    and then the propeller startedwhiz-

    zing alarmingly.

I tried to act nonchalant while I

    leapt back in horror.

The older man with the remote

    control giggled like anaughty child.

Isnt that, after all, what these

    conventions are all about? Getting

in touch with ones inner child?

The Cape Model and Toy club

members insist it is more about col-

lecting those toys that leave todays

adults reminiscing of a bygone era

    a less hurried time.

    Present-day children sometimes

stare in fascination at the things

their parents did when they were

    young, and even sometimes desire

    something they never knew.

    Therewere indeed children at the

    annual Spring Fair on Saturday,

but their wide eyes were for once

    matched by their adult peers.

    And peers they were!

    Everyone who walked into the

bustling and colourful hall at the

    sport complex shared an unparalle-

    led wonder.

TygerBurger is told that the club

is trying to get as much exposure

as possible to the Toy Shows so as

to grow the hobby and to encourage

    the younger generation to take

part, but perhaps it gives them an

excuse to show off their toys to like-

    minded adults.

Members buy and sell various ty-

pes of die-cast toys, train sets, slot

cars, plastic kits and all manner of

    collectable toys.

Staff and learners at the new Northpine Tech-

nical High School in Kraaifontein, were de-

lighted to receive 10 indigenous milkwood

trees as part of PamGolding Properties (PGP)

national initiative to plant indigenous trees in

    communities around the country.

Earlier this year, on Earth Day, 31 March,

PGP group CEO Dr Andrew Golding, issued

a challenge to staff to each plant an indigenous

tree and he in turn would plant 1 000 trees.

Being Arbour Week, the local Pam Golding

Properties Kuils River office felt the timing

was perfect to plant the youngmilkwood trees

on the grounds of the brand new school, which

    had no trees at all.

In addition, the PGP office is to donate a wa-

ter fountain to the school in honour of its offi-

    cial opening.

Located in Northpine, the school, which

opened its doors earlier this year, serves the

    greater Brackenfell and Kraaifontein area,

    communities where learners previously had

to commute to a technical school in Bellville.

The school was built at a cost of R40 million

due to the requirements for technical facilities

to teach subjects such as mechanical and civil

    engineering.

Vivenne Pretorius from the PGP head office

joined Corena Botha and Yolande Naude from

the Kuils River PGP office to plant the indige-

    nous trees on Casual Friday.

The vice-principal of the school, Douglas

    Oormeyer, who helped co-ordinate activities

on the tree planting day, says the school hosts

Grade 8 and 9, however, from 2013 they will

accept registration for Grades 10 and 11 while

in 2014 they will accept registration for their

    first intake for Grade 12.

A passion for saving lives, has recently

earned a Bloubergstrand resident the ti-

tle of Western Province Lifeguard of the

    Year.

The title is the cherry on top of a seven-

    year-long involvementwith theBigBay Surf

    Lifesaving Club.

Lifesaving became away of life for Darren

Willars after his younger son Craig Willars

    (14) was first spotted by one of the clubs jun-

    ior coaches.

The idea of combining his love for water

and being outdoors with lifesaving ap-

pealled to the then 42-year-old Darren.

Despite the challenge of completing 12-

hour patrol shifts and acquiring the knowl-

edge, skills, fitness and stamina to be a life-

guard, he took to this new lifestyle like a

    duck to water.

Darren is also actively involved as the

coach and manager of the u-14 Nippers (the

name given to the clubs junior budding life-

    guards).

Coaching the Nippers is a reward on its

own, Willars said. His u-14 Nippers were

the Western Province Champions this year,

a historical first for the club and an achieve-

ment he is really proud of.

It is probably my biggest achievement as

    a lifeguard, Willar said.

His enthusiasm is shared by both his sons

Dayle Willars (20), who is a spot guard and

Craig who is currently doing his junior life-

    guard programme.

Willars places great emphasis on safety -

    amongst beach goers, swimmers, surfers

and his fellow lifeguards, who he constantly

reminds of this ever crucial concept.

I dont think theres anything greater

than saving the life of a human being, Wil-

    lars said.

Darrens beach front resum includes be-

    ing a qualified surf-instructor, completing

his level-three first aid course, surf examin-

er and completing 137 hours of voluntary

    hours.

It is this passion for lifesaving and those

who need looking after on the beach that

earned him a lifeguard of the year title.

    Nothing greater

    than saving lives

    As part of National Heart

    AwarenessMonth, a recipe book

has been launched by Dr Vash

    Mungal-Singh, CEO of the Heart

    and Stroke Foundation of South

Africa (HSF), as anew tool to dis-

    The book titled Cook-

    cludes plans for hospi-

    tions to adopt its recipes

    and healthier eating

    guidelines.

    Mungal-Singh says

    that this new initiative

is the first of its kind.

    Weve launched

    many initiatives over

    the years but never one

    quite like Cooking from

    The unique book con-

    tains popular budget-

    have been submitted by

    ordinary SouthAfricans

    with a healthy twist

    from medical and nutri-

    tional experts by cutting

n halfuur in spitstyd op di pad

    in die gesig.

Dit kom nt toe motoriste voor-

verlede Vrydag n sug van verlig-

ting geslaak het oor die stop-en-ry-

    beheer op n 7 km-gedeelte van die

    pad tussen Durbanville en Klipheu-

    wel gestaak is.

Die sowat 15 km-pad word reeds

die afgelope jaar deur Power RJM/

JV, wat deur die Wes-Kaapse de-

    partment van vervoer en openbare

    werke as kontrakteur aangestel is,

    herstel en verbeter.

    Volgens Charl Chambers, ter-

    reinagent van Power/RJM JV, sal

    die stop-en-rybeheer van die afgelo-

pe naweek af vir sowat vyf weke

geld. Dit kan egter langer duur as

    die projek vertraagword deur swak

weer, n tekort aan bitumen en die

    onklaar raak van toerusting.

    Die frustrasie by motoriste het

vroer vanjaar opgevlam toe dit ge-

lyk het of die projek onskynlik stil-

    staan.

    Volgens Chambers is die vertra-

    ging deels veroorsaak deur die

    landwye tekort aan bitumen, asook

die buitengewone nat en koue win-

ter vanjaar. Voor daar met pad-

    werke beginkanword,moet die pad

eers afgesper word en dan kan fina-

    le grondtoetse, voorbereidings-

    werk, opmetings en beplanning ge-

doen word. Dit lyk dus vir motoris-

te of daar niks aangaan nie

    Di sowat R50 miljoen-projek,

wat in Julie klaar sou wees, sal nou

    waarskynlik eers middel Novem-

    ber voltooi word. Nadat motoriste

nie ag geslaan het op die spoedbe-

perking van 40 km/h nie, en een

van die direkteure langs die pad

raakgery is, is n stelsel ingebring

    waarin n gemerkte voertuig die

    verkeer begelei om sodoende die

    spoedbeperking af te dwing. Dit

word veral toegepas as werkers op

die pad besig is. Die koste hieraan

alleen het sowat n R0,5 miljoen by

die totale koste van die projek ge-

    voeg, het hy ges.

Daar is laasnaweek begin om die

laaste 1,5 km-gedeelte van die pad

    van net anderkant Lubbestraat in

Durbanville tot by die indraai na

    Groot Phezantekraal-plaas te her-

bou. Die werk het begin op die lin-

    kerbaan (soos vanuit Durbanville)

en die regterbaan sal met stop-en-

    rybeheer gebruik word om verkeer

    in beide rigtings te reguleer.

    Die padwerke aan die linkerbaan

oor die besige verkeerslig by die

    Graanendal-woongebied en die in-

    gang na Durmont vanuit Dur-

banville van sowat 150 m voor die

    verkeersligkruising tot 200 m n

    die verkeersligkruising is Sondag

    gedoen om die minimum ontwrig-

    ting vir motoriste te veroorsaak,

    het Chambers ges.

Die pad is reeds verlede Vrydag

    gesluit vir tweeringtingverkeer.

    Die ryvoorrang by die verkeerslig-

    kruising by die Brackenfell-boule-

    vard (by Graanendal) en Durmon-

    nasionale kyk-na-die-maan-aand.

my.ElfAstronomy is n organisasie van ster-

    rekundiges, gele in Brackenfell.

Volgens Foster is n plaaslike geleentheid

ke geld is. Jyhet gesondheid. As jy ngesonde

Elke

mens het n talent. Gebruik dit.

Dit het nie altyd so goed met my gegaan

nie. Toe my eerste man siek geraak het, het

koop.Met di geld, het ekweer brood gekoop

en die toebroodjies verkoop. Ek is daardie

    terug.

Waar daar n wil is, is daar n weg.

    Personeel

    verdien lof

Ek was bevoorreg om deur die verkeers-

departement uitgenooi te word na hul uit-

reik-geleentheid by die Alta du Toit-na-

    sorgsentrum.

    Oppad soontoehet ekgewonderhoeveel

mense nie sal s die verkeersdepartement

moet liewer aandag gee daaraan ommoto-

van Alta du Toit het my laat besef hoe be-

Iemand het by di ge-

    leentheid die opmerking gemaak:Hierdie

personeel verdien eendag almal n goue

    stoel in die hemel!

    ANDREA CROUS

    Wyksraadslid

    nagtelike skande in Durbanville.

Durbanville is my dorp al vir meer as 30

nie nmre is nie. Wanneer gaan al die kerk-

    gemeenskappe vanDurbanville ernstig raak

oor die gemeenskap waarin hul bestaan?

    Daarword uitreik-aksies gehou, geld in-

not in my backyard.

weer volgepak wees. Dis mos Durbanville se

spesialiteit: Ons kan praat... en praat.

Just over three years ago I was diagno-

In August my life was forever changed:

I was chosen to receive brachy therapy,

    Calling all artists over 60

Another call to creative youth to submit

design proposals has been presented, as

Shift is hosting their annual Fresh Talent

    Sustainable Design Competition.

The competition is our main platform to

showcase examples of sustainable design and

how small things can make a difference, said

beyond beauty and functionality and consider

how design can influence significant change

    to local and global communities.

To enter, designers should submit concept

proposals, in response to the brief: Small

    Change; A World of Difference.

    The submissionsmay span various contem-

porary design fields from product, industrial

    and surface design, communication and

chitecture and engineering, to create new

models for sustainable business and commu-

    nity development projects.

Presentationsmay be submitted in the form

of mood/story boards, video or sound clips,

graphic depictions or even written proposal

    documents.

The 25 finalists selected will benefit from

the support of local and international design

and sustainability experts and will get to par-

ticipate in a social design collaboration in

Spirits in the Durbanville wine valley

are ebullient after the region deliv-

ered the three trophy winners the

most from one wine area in this

years Absa Top 10 Pinotage Awards.

Proudly taking their place among the

Top 10winners out of 132 entries, wereAl-

    tydgedacht Pinotage 2011, Diemersdal Pi-

notage 2011 and the Durbanville Hills

    Rhinofields Pinotage 2011.

    Most often celebrated for itswhitewine

varieties and sauvignon blanc in particu-

lar, the Durbanville wine valleys reputa-

tion as an all-rounder for quality wines

has been given a significant boost with

    these latest accolades.

We are very proud of these achieve-

ments, said Thys Louw, chairman of the

    Durbanville Wine Valley Association.

A highlight for us, which makes this

    performance even more exceptional, is

that only seven of our 11 member farms

    actually make pinotage, he said.

Louw, who is also the winemaker at

Diemersdal, said anAbsa Top 10 Pinotage

award must rank as the single most

    sought-after accolade for pinotage mak-

    ers.

    TheLouw familyhasbeenmakingwine

on Diemersdal for six generations. Com-

bining the best of the old and the new

    worlds, with minimum intervention in

the cellar to conserve the prominent vari-

etal character in their classic wines, is

    part of Diemersdals winning formula.

    Stylistically, I thinkDurbanville gives

    amodernexpression topinotage intense

red fruit character, velvety tannin struc-

tures and balance between fruit and

wood, said Etienne Louw, winemaker of

    Altydgedacht.

    Forme, the Altydgedacht 2011 already

    showed its potential from fermentation.

If the picking pointwas right, then a large

part of the battle has been won. I followed

    the philosophy of minimum winemaker

intervention, which in my cellar usually

    sees the best wine made.

From our first Top 10, weve seen a

    quadrupling in pinotage volume, there-

fore the value of this competition should

    not be underestimated, he said.

    According to Durbanville Hills cellar-

master, Martin Moore, having three out

of 10 winners from Durbanville wine val-

ley is a compliment to the local producers

belief in treating pinotage with a soft

touch and avoiding too much wood con-

    tact.

The Absa Top 10 Pinotage competition

was launched in 1997 to increase aware-

ness of pinotage and to encourage wine-

making excellence in this local variety.

The other seven winners are Painted

    Wolf Guillermo Pinotage 2009 (Swart-

land); Rijks Private Cellar Pinotage 2008

    (Tulbagh); Simonsig Estate Redhill Pino-

tage 2010 (Stellenbosch); Spier 21 Gables

    Pinotage 2010 (Stellenbosch); Swartland

    Bush Vines Pinotage 2010 (Swartland);

Wellington Wines La Cave Pinotage 2010

    (Wellington); Windmeul Reserve Pino-

    tage 2011 (Paarl).

    A tour de force

    for pinotage from

    Dville wine valley

Proud award winners in this years Absa Top 10 Pinotage competition are (from left)

Martin Moore, cellarmaster of Durbanville Hills, with winemakers Wilhelm Coetzee (Dur

banville Hills), Etienne Louw (Altydgedacht) and Mari Branders (Diemersdal).
